2014 Sasquatch Festival - Day 3
2014 Sasquatch Festival - Day 3
2014 Sasquatch Festival - Day 3
2014 Sasquatch Festival - Day 3

Everyone has their own opinions on what makes for a memorable day of Sasquatch. Some believe that it's a chance of a lifetime headliner. Others think that it's a day filled with warm temps and unceasing sunshine.

But what really makes an unforgettable day at the Gorge's perennial Memorial Day festival is a day where no matter the time, there's always a mind-blowing performance to be found. The final day this year was one of those days.

Starting promptly at 1 p.m., the first few hours of the third day were stacked with some of the best female offerings that Sasquatch had provided yet. Seattle's fun loving punk rock outfit Tacocat jammed out to a jaunty set of tunes and kept the audience rapt with a combination of irreverent humor and a hurricane of bubbles that swirled in front of them. They were immediately followed on the Yeti stage by their Hardly Art label mates La Luz who kept it cool and breezy with an engaging display of their modern surf-rock sound.

The bevy of fantastic women performers continued with another epic one-two punch on the main stage starting with bona fide punk rock ass-kicker Brody Dalle. Tune-Yards kept things thumping shortly thereafter and got the crowd moving with her one of a kind, drum-driven world music inflected sound. Dozens of people burst into a legitimate full-tilt run down the gorge as she kicked into her song "Gangsta." - [The News Tribune]

Sasquatch 2014 came to a close on Sunday (6/1) with sets from Haim, Queens of the Stone Age, tUnE-yArDs, Rodriguez, Parquet Courts, Tycho, Kid Kudi, Elbow, John Grant, Waxahatchee, Brody Dalle, La Luz, Lucius, Bob Mould, Major Lazer, comedians like Hannibal Burress and Kate Berlant, and lots more. Pictures from Sasquatch day 3 are in this post.

Check out pictures from day 1 and day 2. More from Sasquatch day 3 below...

Closing Fun Fun Fun Fest, Slayer treated Austin to greatest hits and then some: "Raining Blood," "South of Heaven," "Dead Skin Mask," "Seasons in the Abyss," etc. They also dug out the aforementioned "Die by the Sword," a high point off their 1983 debut LP, Show No Mercy.

After fooling no one with a false ending of "South of Heaven," the third backdrop of the night unfurled at the back of the stage: a parody of the Heineken logo reading "Hanneman" and bearing his life dates. The top read "Angel of Death." Reign in Blood's terrifying opening track - and closing number on Auditorium Shores - now serves as an epitaph for Slayer's fallen co-founder. - [Austin Chronicle]

The eighth Fun Fun Fun Fest happened last weekend (11/8 - 11/10) at Austin's Auditorium Shores, hosting three days of music and fun (fun fun), with such acts as MIA, Deerhunter, Slayer, Television, Thee Oh Sees, Kurt Vile, Cut Copy. Johnny Marr, The Walkmen, Jurassic 5, Killer Mike and loads more. Many of them played again as part of the FFF Nites shows, including shows presented by BrooklynVegan and Invisible Oranges.

We were there in the thick of it and, as mentioned above, you can check out pics from Day 1  HERE and HERE, pics from Day 2 pics HERE and HERE; and pics from Day 3 are HERE and HERE. See you again in 2014 Austin.

Scott Hansen has made a new Tycho album since 2011's blissed-out Dive but will do so in early 2014. Until then, there's a new single, "Awake," this week via Ghostly. Like a Kodachrome print (and much of the Tycho catalog), there's a nostalgic feel to this, warm and friendly. You can dance to it but it's really more head-bobbing material, mood music. You can stream it below.

Tycho will be touring around Austin's Fun Fun Fun Fest in November. Unfortunately he won't be making it to the East Coast on the trek but hopefully soon. Synched up to projection loops, the band's live show is worth checking out. All dates are listed below.

Quicksand @ Webster Hall recently (more by Rebecca Reed) Quicksand

We get a lot of great free shows here in NYC (like The Walkmen and Solange as part of Northside this weekend) but we have to admit this week of free all-ages shows Converse has lined up at San Francisco club Slim's later this month is pretty crazy (though they may be pretty hard to get into). We'd happily spend the whole week there if we could. The line-ups are:

Converse Represent series in San Francisco

Jun 23 - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, DIIV, Metz, Tamaryn, The She's

JUN 24 -Deltron 3030, Juicy J, Blackalicious, Angel Haze, Special Guest

JUN 25 - Hot Chip, Tycho, Blackbird Blackbird, Social Studies

JUN 26 - Quicksand, Mastodon, High On Fire, Saviours, Hot Lunch

JUN 27 - Suicidal Tendencies, Rocket From The Crypt, Ceremony, Special Guests

The only way to go is to fill out the entry form before June 18 and "winning ticket holders will be notified via email soon after with instructions on how and when to retrieve their tickets." All events, "which lead up to the grand opening of the Converse San Francisco retail store on June 28", will take place at Slim's in San Francisco.

Meanwhile, for those in the Five Boroughs (and surrounding area) browse our NYC show calendar for more upcoming free shows.

Baroness at Terminal 5 in May (more by Joe McCabe)
Baroness

Earlier this week, we posted an update from Baroness showing that things were looking upwards for the band. Unfortunately though, with two members having broken vertebrae and frontman John Baizely having a broken arm and leg, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Baroness have in fact cancelled some of their upcoming North American tour dates, including their NYC show at House of Vans and LA's FYF Fest. They will not be replaced on the House of Vans lineup, which happens on August 29 and now just includes Turbonegro, Doomriders, and Nightbirds. This is a bummer but it makes sense that the band takes the time they need to recover, and we wish them a speedy and successful recovery!

Meanwhile, FYF Fest, which Wild Flag also dropped off of, recently expanded its lineup. It now features The Faint (who just announced they'll be reissuing Danse Macabre and touring the album), Glass Candy, King Tuff, and newcomers The Orwells. Tickets for FYF Fest are still available. The updated lineup and flier are below.

Squarepusher
Squarepusher

Back in May, drill & bass master Squarepusher announced a North American tour which included a TBA NYC show set to happen on October 30. Well it turns out the NYC show will actually be on November 1 and it happens at Terminal 5 with a great list of openers; Bonobo (DJ), Holy Fuck, and Mount Kimbie. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (6/29) at noon with an AmEx presale starting today (6/27) at noon. All Squarepusher dates are listed below.

Squarepusher released his new album, Ufabulum, in May and it's a pretty solid one. It opens with "4001," which is just about the only song that sounds like classic Squarepusher, and is then followed by, "Unreal Square," which brings in a bit of brostep bass wobble. The rest of the album sees Squarepusher diving into nutty jazz fusion and unstoppable breakbeats. You can stream three of its tracks below.

Speaking of Mount Kimbie, they've signed to Warp, the label which Squarepusher also calls home, and currently at work on their second album which will be released on the label. The Terminal 5 show appears to be their only announced North American date at the moment.

Holy Fuck and Bonobo will be in NY even sooner for Camp Bisco, which goes down from July 12-14 at Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, NY. They'll be joining a lineup which includes Tycho, Simian Mobile Disco, Skrillex, Amon Tobin ISAM, Big Boi, Crystal Castles, Yacht, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Shigeto, FaltyDL, Thundercat, and more. Tickets for the festival are still available. The full lineup is listed below.

In related news, You can also catch Holy Fuck frontman Brian Borcherdt in NYC right after Bisco with his new project, Dusted, who play Glasslands on July 15. Tickets for that show are still available.

A list of all dates and song streams below...

WOW.

Quicksand recently reunited at Revelation Records' 25th Anniversary on the West Coast, and I would't be surprised if they do the same at Irving Plaza in October.

Idle Warship at Culture Shock 4/28/12
Idle Warship

The 20th annual Culture Shock festival went down at SUNY Puchase from April 27-28. Day 1 (4/27) kicked off with the Stooges-meets-Jesus Lizard punk of Pissed Jeans, followed by California rapper Casey Veggies, who played SOBs a few days earlier. Day 1 of main stage wrapped up with an entrancing live-band IDM set from Tycho followed by Islands, both of whom played unexpected, crowd-demanded encores. Afterwards, Big Freedia packed Purchase's student center (The Stood) for an ass-shakin' afterparty, complete with nonstop dancing both on and off stage, and one of the biggest/craziest shows The Stood has seen in years.

Day 2 began with Cleveland rockers Cloud Nothings, who played almost the entirety of their powerful January LP Attack on Memory. Up next were two completely opposite sides of the folk spectrum; the foot-stomping Felice Brothers and the melancholic, distortion-drenched EMA. Day 2 ended with a headlining set from Idle Warship, the project of Talib Kweli and Res in full rock band mode. Idle Warship drew the largest crowd of the entire fest, and delivered an unfaltering set of Idle Warship originals, Talib classics, and a few covers (including the Stooges' "Search and Destroy").

Big Freedia and Casey Veggies will both be at Bamboozle this weekend and you can also catch Freedia in NYC at Santos TONIGHT (5/17).

More pics from the fest (excluding Pissed Jeans and Casey Veggies) below...

Tycho at Lincoln Hall in Chicago in January (more by Zach Pollack)
Tycho

Sasquatch

"Following last year's 10th anniversary, which crushed previous attendance records and set a new mark for the speed with which tickets sold out, the Sasquatch! Music Festival unveils its 2012 lineup which once again features 4 days of music. The festival, hailed as "a model of well-paced programming...in a four-day schedule as efficient and natural feeling as an expertly built algorithm" by NPR Music while Wired notes, "leave the landscape out of it and Sasquatch! has a lineup to kill for," runs May 25-28 (Memorial Day Weekend) at The Gorge, the internationally acclaimed concert venue carved in the basalt cliffs high above the Columbia River Gorge in Quincy, WA."
The Sasquatch! Music Festival takes place, as usual, at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington over Memorial Day weekend (May 25-28). And this year's lineup is:

Beacon

Speaking of openers on larger tours playing Mercury Lounge shows, Beacon, who are currently on a tour with Tycho, which hits MHOW on February 4 with Oneohtrix Point Never (tickets), just announced a show at the NYC venue happening on March 2 with Xylos and Grimace Federation. Tickets, currently on AmEx presale, go on public sale Friday (1/27) at noon.

Tycho, before hookin up with Beacon (who do their cover of Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night" in their live set), played a show earlier this month in Chicago with Active Child. You can see pics and read about that HERE. Beacon released an EP in 2011.

All Beacon tour dates, a stream of them covering Portishead's "The Rip", and the video they made for their Katy Perry cover, below...

Oneohtrix Point Never at MHOW in 2010 (more by Erez Avissar)
Oneohtrix Point Never

As mentioned, Tycho (aka Scott Hansen) is heading out on a tour with Beacon in 2012 that brings them to Music Hall of Williamsburg on February 4. Beacon weren't initially announced for the MHOW show, but they've since been added to it and so has Oneohtrix Point Never (aka Daniel Lopatin), who put out Pitchfork's 6th favorite album of 2011 (stream it below).

When we first announced the show, there was no ticket link yet. They've since gone up and tickets go on sale to the public today at noon. Ends up the show was initially going to be part of the Pitchfork FORMS Festival which has since been postponed but the show is going on anyway, now separate from the festival.

All dates and album stream below...

Continue reading "Oneohtrix Point Never & Beacon added to Brooklyn Tycho show (which is no longer part of FORMS)"

Tycho
Tycho

Tycho (aka Scott Hansen) last toured North America this past October in support of his new album Dive, which is out now. Though he headlined MHOW during that tour, most of the dates were opening for Little Dragon, whose track, "Little Man," he has since remixed (listen below).

Tycho will go on his own headlining tour of North America in early 2012 which brings him back to Music Hall of Williamsburg on February 4. Tickets are not on sale yet but check ticketmaster for updates.

Most of the dates on that tour are being opened by Brooklyn duo Beacon (who released an EP last month), but they are not listed on the MHOW show. However, you can catch Beacon in NYC TONIGHT (12/16) at Cameo Gallery with Home Video and Warm Ghost.

All dates and song stream below...

Razika
Razika

I guess this is the pre-CMJ edition of This Week In Indie which is a slightly less busy week than normal, though not by much. (And CMJ this year isn't the most exciting line-up I've seen for that matter, but we'll get to that next week.) In fact there's some pretty cool musical things you should be considering, so let's get into it.

As mentioned elsewhere on this site, Norway's Razika are playing Friday (10/14) at Cameo, their first-ever U.S. show, and only one for now. You may not think you need a Norwegian all-girl ska band in your life, and maybe you don't, but Razika do it really well. I wasn't expecting to like it. And really, what they do is more ska-tinged pop than actual ska. Which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. There's definitely a Lilliput/Kleenex vibe (or even Electrelane for a more modern comparison) to what they do. And the songs are crazy catchy. You can get half-price tickets ($5) if you use this link.

It's a good show all around at Cameo, with Ski Lodge whose EP I like a lot. As I've said before, it's like early Smiths meets Beach Fossils. The other band on the bill is Lips which is New Zealander Stephanie Brown who now lives in Brooklyn. I like the songs on her Bandcamp page, which are kind of laptop soul, not entirely unlike Little Dragon or, you. There's a really cute video for her song "One Not Two" at the bottom of this post.

Dominant Legs
Dominant Legs

San Francisco's Dominant Legs  and tourmates Nurses are in town, playing Mercury Lounge on Friday (10/14) and Glasslands on Saturday (10/14). Dominant Legs released their debut LP, Invitation, last month on Lefse Records and it's an appealing take on effervescent '80s pop, completely with lightly funky guitars, glistening keyboards and big choruses. You can download a couple songs from Invitation at the top of this post.

As for Nurses, the Portland trio get called "psych-pop" a lot which I guess is code for "vaguely MGMT-ish" but it's the funkier side of that band and not really so much psych to my ears. There's a lot of echo on it, I guess that's psychedelic. That said, their new album Dracula is pretty catchy and danceable and is more directly comparable to fellow Portlandians Unknown Mortal Orchestra than anyone else. You can download a track at the top of this post.

Tycho

And lastly, Tycho is at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Sunday (10/16). (Tickets are still available.) The Bay Area electronic artist released his new album, Drive, last week on Ghostly and I've been listening to it a lot. No doubt it owes a giant debt to Boards of Canada, more in the dreamlike synth sounds than in execution. Tracks like "Hours" (downloadable above) more blatantly danceable than BoC but it's still the kind of record you could sleep to as well. And though I no longer have a car, this would be good music behind the wheel, and not just because of the album title.

While listening to Drive, you might think that a live show might just be just a guy and a laptop, Scott Hansen has a full Tycho band that looks to be pretty good from the YouTube clips I've watched. Canada's Teen Daze are also on the bill, and blissed-out Swedes Korallreven are the DJs for the evening.

That's the major stuff for this week...though don't forget Lotion plays their first show in ten years on Monday (10/17) at Knitting Factory! More day-by-day picks are below.

Arkells
Arkells

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12

Early show tonight at Mercury Lounge: Canadian fourpiece The Arkells whose 2008 debut was one of that year's undiscovered gems, full of hook-filled, strident heartland rock that would've done gangbusters in the '80s. (You may remember me writing about them from M for Montreal.) Their new album, Michigan Left, is out next week in Canada.

I'm ashamed to admit I haven't given The Rosebuds' new album, Loud Planes Fly Low, enough attention but I definitely like what I have heard. You can download "Woods" at the top of this post. One of the nicest bands around, The Rosebuds are always good live and if you've never seen them before, they play Bowery Ballroom tonight. Want to go for free? We have a couple of pairs of tickets you can win if you email bvcontests@hotmail.com (subject: Rosebuds) right now. Include your first and last name in the email and we'll get back to the winners with instructions.

Tycho

San Francisco IDM artist Tycho (aka Scott Hansen) will release his new album, Dive, on November 15 via Ghostly. Check out the album's atmospheric single, "Hours," which you can download above. The album is available for preorder on iTunes now. The artwork and tracklist is below.

Tycho was supposed to be here for CMJ, but cancelled his CMJ plans because he's been added as an opener to Little Dragon's tour. He is not playing their show on October 14 at Terminal 5 though (tickets). Questlove (DJ), Javelin, and Donn T are. He will however play his own NYC show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 16. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Tycho will also perform at Decibel Festival in Seattle, WA today (9/30).
