Karl Hyde of Underworld sees that an empty sequencer isn't the only blank canvas.

Underworld's new album Barking is on the verge of being freed from it's retail shackles, and will premiere along with accompanying films for the record and a DJ set from DATA at Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday, September 11th. Tickets are on sale for $5 OR you can RSVP to get in for free ("When you arrive, tell the doorperson you are on the GBH guest list").
In addition, Underworld will showcase the record at several live shows including three in the US, one of which is Roseland Ballroom on October 27th. Tickets go on sale at noon TODAY (9/10).
Underworld fan with a severe case of agoraphobia? Talk to a therapist and in the meantime, Barking is streaming in full at the band's myspace and available for preorder in CD/DVD, 2CD, 2LP, digital, and everywhere in between formats.
In other news, Karl Hyde of Underworld recently had a gallery opening in Japan for his paintings entitled "What's Going On In Your Head When You're Dancing?". More info on the gallery and the art is on their website, or in Japanese if you are so inclined. The show closes on 9/15.
All Underworld dates, and videos for "Always Loved A Film" and "Scribble" taken from Barking, are below...

The Bloody Beetroots

The Bloody Beetroots recently collaborated with Steve Aoki to release a remix of Refused's punk burner "New Noise". Now Italian producer and Bloody Beetroots DJ Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo will "return to his punk roots" and hit the road with the full band incarnation of his project, Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77
"Stepping out from behind the mixers, Rifo now plays guitar, bass, and synths and is joined on stage by Tommy Tea on controllers and the Beetroots' newest member Edward Grinch on drums. The new live setup is a dramatic reinterpretation of the Beetroots' music and the ultimate marriage of the band's love of grinding electronic melodies, aggressive hardcore punk, and elaborate compositions."Death Crew 77 hits Webster Hall on October 15th. Tickets are on sale.
The BBRDC77 tour also includes an appearance at Hard Haunted Mansion in LA on Oct 30 and 31st alongside a stacked lineup of Underworld, Rusko, Mr. Oizo, Fake Blood, Sebastian, Busy P, A-Trak, Erol Alkan, Jack Beats, Booka Shade, AC Slater, and many many more. Full lineup for the fest is below, tickets are on sale.
HARD recently hosted Crystal Castles at Terminal 5, and M.I.A. at Governors Island. There's no more HARD fests coming up in NYC, but many of the same artists are performing at Electric Zoo on Randall's Island over Labor Day Weekend.
All BB tour dates and some video of the band in action is below...

Balcony climbin' @ Hard Summer '09 in L.A. Saturday night (downtownlobby)

A back door of the VIP section, where tickets began at $125, flew open and fans ran in from the parking lot in what [concert-goer Will] Fan described as a "stampede."Hard Summer '09 @ L.A. Forum (beltran)"We saw about 200 kids run right through the bar area," said the 35-year-old Sherman Oaks resident. "It was a little scary. I saw the bartender push one kid down, but everyone else just ran around him. Eventually, security was able to stop more people from coming in. But the kids ran out of the bar...and basically hopped over the balcony and onto the floor. Then the music stopped."
The sold-out all-night Hard Summer concert, which featured a lineup that included U.K. dance duo Underworld and Canadian electronic rockers Crystal Castles, was halted at about 10:50 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, which cited "hazardous life-safety things taking place inside the event."
[L.A. Times]

"We were required to shut down Hard Summer at The Forum Saturday [August 8th] night by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. They declared the event a "hazard" after seeing concert-goers jumping from the balcony to the floor. The Inglewood Police Department backed the decision of the Fire Department and assisted in clearing the venue.Underworld and Chromeo were among those who were supposed to play. While we, the promoters, worked with the authorities to consider other options to continue the concert, ultimately they made the decision to end it. We are happy to report that there were no major injuries.
We are offering refunds to all concert-goers and are deeply disappointed that the fans were not able to see this incredible show come to fruition." [official statement]
Hard Fest NYC is set to take place October 10th at Terminal 5 where we doubt any problems like that will happen. Crookers and Major Lazer (Soundsystem) headline, and tickets are still on sale.

PS1 (more by Zach Dilgard)

We're at the beginning of another stacked weekend of dancing that goes right on through to next week. No time to waste...here's what's going on, starting with Saturday (7/18):

The only bands I (Showtrotta) wanted to see at All Points West in Jersey City on Friday (8/8) were Underworld and Radiohead. I entered the festival a bit earlier than that though - just in time to get poured on, but luckily it let up pretty quickly. I had some time to grab something to eat, drink one of my five beers in the designated drinking area (seriously Jersey...wtf?), and stake out a good spot for Underworld. I wound up around 15 feet back from the stage after stepping over and around throngs of people who had already claimed their spots with blankets. When Underworld came on it became apparent that 90% of the people were just there for Radiohead. It was frustrating, but I wasn't about to let it ruin anything. There was a little group of people nearby who were also there to see Underworld and we all happily got down for the hour and 15 minutes Underworld were on.
I was upset when I later read criticisms of Underworld's set as "cheesy and dated". Underworld played such an important role shaping electronic music and I really enjoyed their set. The older tracks they played at the festival are classics which paved the way for a lot of the electronic music that became popular thereafter. Underworld's music is, and their stage presence was, strong. I was able to experience a sense of nostalgia for a time that I wasn't around for firsthand.
Unfortunately the daytime APW set meant there was no great Underworld light show...and the huge light balloons just weren't the same without actual lights in them. Luckily the visuals were still good - a mix of old school video games and a live video feed from cameras on the stage which often pointed at Karl Hyde who barely stopped bouncing for a second through the entire length of the show.
The night ended perfectly hours later at the end of Radiohead's set with their dedication of "Everything In Its Right Place" to Underworld, which as a fan of both bands I found to be a beautiful moment in its own right. However, I also appreciated it even more after dancing amidst a crowd of motionless, disinterested Radiohead fans during Underworld's set.
The next day in Baltimore Underworld got a two hour set in the dance tent where they were competing a little with the noise coming from the Foo Fighters on the main stage. There were no huge Underworld light balloons at all - possibly due to the ceiling height, but it was nighttime. Both festival setlists, and more pics from Baltimore, below...

I would have loved to have been at APW all day Friday (8/8/08), but I knew a more realistic goal would be to get there in time for Underworld which I was still late for. I did catch a little though, and I filmed the below video so you can see a little bit of what it's like there in Liberty State Park at the festival (while listening to a very popular song being performed live)...
Soulwax @ Irving Plaza - August 6, 2008 (CRED)

This simply awesome week in dance that started on Wednesday with Soulwax (they were awesome - look for the review next week) continues into this weekend, starting with Friday:
As I already mentioned (price aside) the move for Friday is Underworld at All Points West (Have you mapped out your strategy yet?). I can't stress enough what a great, live electronic music experience an Underworld show is. Tickets are still available.
It's really hard to recommend doing anything else, but here are some other things that are happening:

It's 2 days later, and despite not doing any dancing Friday night I am still hurting from the French madness that went down Wednesday and Thursday - but more on that next week. This weekend there is still more dancing to be done.
Saturday night (August 2, 2008) the thing to do is see Ewan Pearson deejay at Love....

Booka Shade (here), Soulwax (soon), art by Underworld, Electroma & more in the Friday night in Dance
by Showtrotta
Hope you got your fill of the French on Wednesday and Thursday. This weekend brings dance music from loads of different places (but is way less French intensive).
Friday night (August 1st) one of the bigger dance events happening is Booka Shade at the Fillmore at Irving Plaza. Walter and Arno have been working on their own music together since the 90's as well as producing for a number of artists on Berlin-based, underground dance label (which they co-founded with M.A.N.D.Y. and DJ T), Get Physical. I have not seen them before, but have often heard their live performances compared to Soulwax's (who are here next Wednesday! Get tickets!) which I always consider to be a good thing. If it's an accurate comparison you should be in for a night of absolutely losing it on the dancefloor.
$20 advanced tickets available here or at the box office (no service charge).

This week's rather lean CD release list has a distinctive Athens, Georgia flavor (at least for the two discs that interest me most). R.E.M. releases their long-awaited live album (complete with concert DVD), R.E.M. Live, and a remastered edition of Pylon's Gyrate arrives with several bonus tracks. Other albums I can strongly recommend include Southeast Engine's Misra debut, A Wheel Within a Wheel, the Capstan Shafts' Environ Maiden and singer-songwriter Karen Dalton's live two-disc collection, Cotton Eyed Joe.
Home for Christmas: Voices from the Heartland is the only holiday music disc I am picking up, with soulful Christmas music from artists ranging from Leon Redbone to Irma Thomas.
Have I left anything noteworthy off the list? What new music releases can you recommend this week? What should I avoid? What are you picking up?

You know I love Australian dance music (Cut Copy, Presets, Riot in Belgium, Van She, Bang Gang Deejays...anything MODULAR!), but when Australia meets France magic happens...
Perfect example: This summer the Parisian nutters of Institubes released Melbourne dance band Midnight Juggernauts' Road to Recovery EP. The duo showcase their full melodic electro-disco sound on the tracks Road to Recovery and Tombstone. Pick up a copy at Turntable Lab.
The band also has a full length out (only in Australia at the moment) called Dystopia, and I'm sure they'll be selling copies of it on their North American tour opening for JUSTICE (dates at the end of this post). The album is full of the typical big, bouncy Midnight Juggernauts dance sound. However, Dystopia also has spacey, poppy tracks that really give the band a more complex dimension. They recently stole a drummer from the Valentinos to fill out their crazy live show, and will be destroying coast to coast come October. Get on the Juggertron. (Watch the video for "Shadows")
Underworld @ Central Park Summerstage, NYC - Sept 14, 2007

I totally messed up and missed my interview with Karl Hyde of Underworld last week. I'm more upset than you are. I did make it to their Central Park Summerstage show though. While distinctly less visual than the other times I've seen Underworld (and less loud: damn Upper East Side noise laws), it still brings me joy to go nuts to the classics. I hope to see the boys back here: in a darker, louder setting. From this Boston Hearald interview, it sounds like that might not happen soon. Musicsnobbery has some great photos from Central Park. Oblivion with Bells will keep me company until then...

Adam Kesher @ Knitting Factory, NYC - Sept 10, 2007 (CRED)

Those of you who missed Adam Kesher's NYC debut on Monday night are going to have to wait through a long, cold Adam Kesher-less winter as the band heads into the studio to complete their debut LP upon their return to France on Thursday.
La Decadanse isn't one of you:
I'll cut to the chase. Having only heard Adam Kesher's cover of Para One's "Dun-dundun", I thought it'd be a fun gig to drop by and wasn't expecting much as I admittedly don't frequent venues to see bands. Instead I was awed, absolutely starstruck, completely floored, stupified even! The songs, the actual performance and showmanship which included some heavy fancy footwork and instrument rotations... it just all coalesced into a supercharged set that left the room, which wasn't even packed to capacity, dense with energy.Their new songs incorporate everything from hip-hop beats, to harmonized and glistening pop vocals, to shredding punk riffs, a cowbell, and of course, a dancey swagger. The boys head home to France on Thursday, but will be laying down a DJ set tonight at the Calvin Harris Afterparty at Happy Ending. Buy them a drink ask them to come back sooner.
Speaking of Calvin Harris, the UK dance sensation has been in town hustling the press circuit in anticipation of his sold out US debut at the Mercury Lounge tonight. I'm looking forward to seeing how the album translates live and I imagine the infectious grooves will have all the girls dancing like crazy. Haven't heard it yet? AOL is streaming the whole thing this week.
I finally got my hands on a copy of Underworld's new album Oblivion With Bells and I couldn't be more excited to see Rick and Karl rip Summerstage apart on Friday night. From even before I heard the first bassline, I haven't been able to shake comparisons to my first encounter with Underworld, 1993's "debut" dubnobasswithmyheadman. The minute I saw the album artwork I've associated the album to that other chaotically black and white designed disc. I don't think the comparison stops at the visual elements. The album is decidedly dark and distinctly Underworld, with pulsing rhythms and conceptually poetic lyrics, but some tracks delve into more atmospheric and funky melodic soundscapes that remind me of the album progression and urban feel of their earlier disc. Stay tuned for an interview with Karl next week: we'll get into all that. The latest tour dates are at their site.
Simian Mobile Disco bring their mobile live rave and light live show back to NYC this weekend on Saturday night at Gramercy Theater. If you missed their stellar Studio B gig, get to this one. It will be a good musical benchmark for next weekend's Chemical Brother's double header: one indoors midtown, one outdoors pool. The pool show also features Ladytron. All CB tour dates in a previous post, and don't forget SMD will be at CMJ too.
Larry Tee is gonna be busy this month. He's launching TWO new parties this weekend at Sugarland (221 N. 9th St in Williamsburg). Clever readers will note that 221 N. 9th is indeed the old Capone's and its not all going to the boys. While Fridays are the aptly named "BOYQUAKE," Saturday is the more mixed Happy Birthday Club.
Time Out also catches up with Larry as he is launching the multi-day Dance Music Invasion 2007 in just a few weeks on October 3 - 6. Ferry Corsten, Erick Morillo, and Christopher Just are the only confirmed artists. Stay tuned to the official website for more news.
Diplo and Switch are going out on tour together, they hit Studio B for Meanred's Korupt night on Saturday Sept. 29th (rescheduled from Sept 08th). Pitchfork sat down with Diplo to discuss the tour, his work with Switch, and his Pitchfork Mix (MP3), very cool that he gives Drop the Lime a shout out.
Heading out to Austin this weekend for the Austin City Limits Festival? Grizzly Bear and Art Brut not your thing? Can't decide between M.I.A. and LCD Soundsystem? Well, maybe see M.I.A. in the day, and then check out LCD Soundsystem at night - Friday night at Red 7. Or see LCD Soundsystem twice. UPDATE: Thanks commenters for bringing up the fact that the "LCD Soundsystem" set is only a DJ set.

Daft Punk @ Keyspan Park, Coney Island, NYC - Aug 9, 2007 *

* photo by Phillip Angert
Daft Punk: What an incredible celebration of the power of electronic music. I can't say I've ever seen so many people dancing and smiling in New York. Whatever your background, whatever your experience with dance music, I think we all we were on the same page on Thursday night. I dance often, and I haven't danced that hard in a long time. You all know that dance music is awesome, but dance music with Robots, Pyramids, Tron visuals, and Kraftwerkian pagentry is sublime. In related news,
Daft Punk will in late November release a live album chronicling the June 14 Paris stop on its first tour in a decade, Billboard.com can reveal. The as-yet-untitled Capitol set will be available in a single CD edition plus a two-disc set which features the show's encore. As of now, no live DVD companion is in the works, according to the group. And don't miss the screening of Daft Punk' movie Electroma at the Landmark Sunshine Theatre in NYC this weekend.
If big-time dance concerts are your bag (they should be after Daft Punk), you've got plenty to look forward to in the coming month.
The only thing getting me over my Daft-over is Underworld in Central Park on September 14th. Underworld, in conjunction with their Tomato design collective, take the visual music experience to a completely different level.
Underworld are busy prepping their new album, Oblivion With Bells, for an October release. Prefix has the full tracklist, and a list of some their friends who helped whittle it down to eleven. Earplug previewed the album in their latest issue:
Musically, Hyde cites Germany's techno scene as a major motivator, specifically name-checking Ricardo Villalobos, Mathew Jonson, and the Kompakt label, among others.Karl & Rick have consistently been amazing at twisting contemporary sonic influences into something completely futuristic and amazingly poetic. Check out an awesome live video of Underworld playing "Mo Move" for Moscow.
The Chemical Brothers are another duo adept at channelling "the sound of now" into something uniquely their own. Two big NYC-area shows coming up, including the recently annonunced gig with Ladytron at McCarren Pool on Sept 22 (tix). If you haven't picked up their fantastic We are The Night album. Do it again. Lots of Chems goodies at their Astralwerks site, including an interview series and remix competition for their next single "Salmon Dance." Check out this video of Tom Chemical explaining why some tracks are more fun to play live than others (while Ed Chemical thinks about taking a crap).
Chicago readers, I'm DJing in your fair city this Friday night.
MORE NEWS
- Calvin Harris is probably the Arctic Monkeys of UK indie dance, and is also some serious fun. ABC News checks up on his Merrymaking home invasion fiasco this Friday. His I Created Disco album is out on Almost Gold in the US on September 4, and he plays the Mercury Lounge in NYC on September 12 (tix), and The Echo in LA two days later.
- Its been a tough summer in Ibiza this year
- Pitchfork points out Ewan Pearson is up next for the stellar Fabric mix series, also seems to think Ibiza is in in Greece
- Jas & James of Simian Mobile Disco take a dig at blog house - "I've been finding that I've been going on all the blogs and all that kind of stuff, which is not a good way of getting music because you get all the same shit that everyone else gets", and a dig at blog rock - "I'm sure everyone picks up the same stuff like Tapes 'n Tapes and all that nonsense" on PF's Guest List. It was also recently announced that SMD are playing CMJ, which is not to be confused with their upcoming show at NYC's Gramercy Theatre.
David Bruno was on vacation. Sorry 'bout that....
DFA does PS1 in NYC, June 30, 2007 (CRED & MORE)

Sorry for the delay kids, let the dancing continue - Big, big dance parties coming through NYC in July and this weekend is no exception.
You already know this Saturday is the *live* NYC debut of Simian Mobile Disco at Fixed at Studio B. I still can't get enough of SMD's "I Believe."
Friday night is chockfull of parties worth your time, my People Don't Dance No More party has DFA's Justin Miller, Jacques Renault & Justine D do the Guggenheim early, and Jacques & Marcos Cabral do their Runaway partyat Lit later. You can also catch Chromeo and Flosstradamus hip it out at Fun at Studio B.
Speaking of my party, we are super excited to be launching the first in a series of summertime BOAT PARTIES on Friday July 13th: THE WURST BOAT PARTY featuring My Cousin Roy & Jacques Renault of the Wurst Edits label. The party is hosted in conjunction with the Rocks Off Crew and sails at midnight on Friday the 13th. Spooky! The first 50 tickets get a free WURST EDITS mix CD full of exclusive disco goodness from the boys. Tickets are $15 and are extremely limited, so get at it. This is also the first of our '18 & over' parties, so if you haven't experienced a People Don't Dance No More throw down, get on the boat!
Saturday 7.7.07 is a good day to get freaky all day and all night. The PS1 Warm Up parties are fully underway. The boys of DFA Records kicked it off last weekend and this week pass the torch to the A Touch of Class. Your $10 gets live sets from Services & Kudu, among others...and DJ sets from ATOC and the amazing Lee Douglas (who is putting a record out on WURST EDITS called "Breakwind"). I can't not recommend going to see the Boredoms (I'm going too), but hussle over to Queens afterwards to catch In Flagranti rock the Water Taxi Beach Party (the summer's full Saturday line up is here). Grab a few Sparks and head to Greenpoint for SMD or cruise further south to Trouble & Bass' new home at Rock Star Bar.

UNDERWORLD TOUR
Karl Hyde (vocalist, Underworld) on Underworld's "Born Slippy" from an article in The Guardian:
We used to go out drinking in Soho and I ended up in the Ship on Wardour Street. All the lyrics were written on that night. A drunk sees the world in fragments and I wanted to recreate that...Rick [Smith] came up with a rhythm and I started singing over it. The vocals were done in one take. When I lost my place, I'd repeat the same line; that's why it goes, "lager, lager, lager, lager"... Why Born Slippy? It was a greyhound we won money on.As previously reported, Underworld is going out on tour and will be hitting Central Park on September 14th. TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE. The boys will be joined by Border Community's James Holden. Stay tuned for info on when Underworld will be releasing a single from their forthcoming album. If you haven't caught up with Underworld in a while, I highly recommend checking out their epic digital-only RiverRun singles.
:DFA FREAKOUT: James is a disco guy:
LCD SOUNDSYTEM live at Studio B? BANANAS. Total destruction ensues. Studio B might not be standing after this goes down. DFA DJs and mayhem.
Earplug sat down with James Murphy and he makes a really great recommendation for fans new to dance music:
Read Last Night a DJ Saved My Life by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton. Read the disco sections and check the playlists in the back, like those from Paradise Garage, the Loft, the Funhouse, and the Palladium. It was a real eye-opener for me. There are top-10 and top-20 lists from amazing DJs of that era who were really adventurous and took chances. Just track those songs down and see what you like. It's a really great history of disco and of dance music.KEEP READING............
