As you can see in the above screen shot, UMG aka Universal Music Group isn't too happy that someone posted Phantogram's first new song in two years to YouTube. It's just too bad that someone is Phantogram themselves!
The track, "Black Out Days", is from a forthcoming LP that will be released via Phantogram's two labels, Barsuk and [Universal] Republic. You can still listen to it though, via the band's Soundcloud (shhhh, don't tell Universal). Click play below...

Ben Nichols (Lucero) @ Maxwell's (more by Tim Griffin)
Seeing that Lucero is about to be in town with a big show at Webster Hall on Saturday night (10/17), and that Chris Denny (last seen on stage with Deer Tick in Prospect Park) is about to make another NYC appearance (including at the free BrooklynVegan day party at Pianos on Thursday, October 22nd), I thought it might be cool to get these two Arkansas musicians (who have met before) on the phone.
It turned out better than I could have imagined. Chris (who recently singed to Partisan Records making him Deer Tick's label-mate) and Lucero front-man Ben Nichols ended up discussing Lucero's decision to go with Universal Records for their new album (1372 Overton Park), drinking, horns, whiskey, marriage, The Pogues, whiskey, Tom Petty, drinking and much more. Check it out, along with all tour dates and some videos and stuff, below...
Lucero @ Maxwell's - June 2009 (more by Tim Griffin)
Lucero's sixth studio album and major label debut, 1372 Overton Park, is due October 6 on Universal/Republic Records. Produced by Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem) and featuring horn arrangements by legendary Memphis session player Jim Spake (Al Green, John Hiatt, Solomon Burke, Cat Power), the record marks a decided turn toward the Memphis soul sound that has long informed the band's records from afar.Lucero will support that new record on an extended North American tour this fall. LUCERO RAMBLIN' ROADSHOW & MEMPHIS REVUE is "a traveling roadshow featuring Amy LaVere, Cedric Burnside with Lightnin' Malcolm, Jack Oblivian, John Paul Keith & the One Four Fives and The City Champs" (openers change throughout the tour). The NYC show is on October 17th at Webster Hall. Tickets go on AmEx presale Wednesday, August 5th at noon. General sale starts Friday, August 7th at noon.
Sonic Youth @ McCarren Pool (more by Lori Baily)
"After rampant speculation, Matador Records can confirm the label will be releasing a new studio album from Sonic Youth sometime in 2009. Having fulfilled their contractual obligations to the Universal Music Group, Sonic Youth recently reached an agreement with Matador to release the band's 16th album of new material in all worldwide territories, save for Japan.Thurston Moore is performing the album "Psychic Hearts" at ATP NY on September 19th. He's also playing The Stone on September 27th as part of Northampton Wools.
While Sonic Youth's status as one of the more innovative and influential bands of the past 30 years needs little explanation, the group's most recent recordings for Geffen --- 2006's 'Rather Ripped' being their final for the label --- rank amongst the current decade's best. For Matador, the opportunity to work in partnership with a group who've made such an profound impact on our roster/hometown/collective consciousness was one to jump at. Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley will commence recording the new Sonic Youth LP/CD this autumn and we look forward to sharing further details in the very near future."
"By now you probably know the story ... days before the release of their sophomore album Get Awkward (Ecstatic Peace / Universal) Be Your Own Pet were informed by the Universal Records higher ups (ya know, the people in suits in the corner office at the top of the building) that three tracks on the album were too violent for the impressionable ears of Be Your Own Pet fans. The band was given the option of recording the tracks without the offending lyrics or taking them off the album. Not wanting to give up artistic control they chose the latter and thus off the album came\"Becky,\" a song about kicking the ass of your former best friend, the nihilistic\"Black Hole\" and\"Blow Yr Mind\" which is about just that.Be Your Own Pet are playing McCarren Pool with Black Keys and Tapes n Tapes on August 7th. Tickets are still on sale. All tour dates below....
XL Recordings (Be Your Own Pet\'s label outside of North Amercia) then entered the picture. The indie had no problem releasing Get Awkward as it was given to them and is only too happy to be putting out this Get Damaged EP so America can finally hear the songs that were banned for being too violent.
Get Damaged is currently available via itunes and will be in-stores on June 24." [official PR]
