Moss Icon

If you can only see one band at Chaos in Tejas year, bets are that you'll probably try and catch Moss Icon. The semi-reunited emotional post-hardcore heroes (dont say emo!) will play a single show at the annual Austin, Texas festival in conjunction with their recently released discography out now via Temporary Residence Limited. This triple LP (or CD, if you so prefer) features an etching on side F and out now via the label. Stream all of that discography below. and order yours, or try your luck at winning a copy of the test pressing (one of only twelve in existence)! Details on how to win are below.

In honor of Moss Icon's upcoming show and their current discography, I asked member Tonie Joy (also of Universal Order of Armageddon and The Convocation) about the reunion, UOoA, new material (!), and more. Tonie also mentioned that Moss Icon "may play NYC." Let's hope they do. The results of that discussion are below along with details on how you can win that uber-rare test press.

Tragedy

No rest for the wicked. After a grueling weekend of heavy music at Maryland Deathfest (pictures of day 1 HERE, day two HERE, day three HERE, and day four HERE), I am looking forward to a mix of punk, hardcore, metal, crust, d-beat, and indie at Chaos in Tejas in Austin this week! Kicking off on Thursday (June 2nd) the four day festival features appearances from tons notables, day shows, after parties, and in-stores, some for free. Swing down for a blow by blow breakdown of what you should look for every day at the multi-venue music fest.

Chaos

Thursday, June 2

Ah the start of the festival.... fresh legs and feet, and a hunger for tons of good bands. Thursday will sate your hunger too, as there are tons of great hardcore/metal shows to choose from. Shows tonight happen on both stages at Emo's, both stages at Red 7, at the Mohawk, Beauty Bar, Beerland and the Broken Neck.

Despite the high profile cancellation of Killing Joke at Emo's outdoor, CIT bounced back and added Cro-Mags to an already awesome lineup of rare appearances from strong>Asta Kask (Swedish d-beat), D-Clone (a rare show from these Japanese hardcore monsters), Veins (featuring Mark McCoy from Charles Bronson/Das Oath as well as Ian from Copremesis/Castevet), Double Negative (North Carolinian hardcore greats who released the awesome Daydreamnation last year), Vile Gash (brutal hardcore on Youth Attack), Japan'sThe Slowmotions, and NYC's Cult of Youth (dark folk with a great new LP on Sacred Bones) and Crazy Spirit (excellent hardcore with members of Perdition).

Thankfully, I can use my wristband from Emo's to hit up Red 7, right around the corner, where an awesome metal show will clash with an awesome garage show on the two stages. Finnish doomers Hooded Menace will headline on stage with Denmark's Undergang, crusty death metallers Acephalix (mems of the amazing Vastum), more death metal from Bone Sickness, and local death and rollers Mammoth Grinder. Meanwhile, the second stage will feature The Spits, the Arrivals, Shellshag, TV Ghost, and others. All of this means that I'll probably miss Converge/Title Fight/Touche Amore/Trap Them/Burning Love/the Menzingers at Mohawk and How I Quit Crack/The Indicator Dogs at Beauty Bar. At least I can end the night right with Tragedy and Origin of M at Broken Neck as part of an after-party. Yikes!

UOoA
Universal Order of Armageddon

Though Orphan unfortunately didn't play Death By Audio on 1/22 (Brendan Majewski, RIP), people were thinking of them as they watched performances from reformed hardcore greats Universal Order of Armageddon, the roaring doom oddballs in The Body, and Philadelphia sludge duo Trophy Wife. Samantha Marble reports:

The show was packed, and all of the bands dedicated the night to Brandon and Orphan. Trophy Wife, The Body and UOA all seemed to play at their best, including UOA's vocalist who mentioned to the crowd that he had been throwing up all day and had a fever. Though there was an underlying sadness, overall it was a celebration.
Presumably a celebration of both the riff and the Orphan riff-er.

UOoA also played Cake Shop one night earlier as part of a short tour. More pictures from Death By Audio are below.

Tragedy

After an initial lineup was announced earlier this year, Chaos in Tejas is back for more with another set of bands confirmed for the June 2nd - 5th Austin festival. Get to booking your ticket if you're interested in seeing Kriegshog (from Japan, their last show ever), a Youth of Today reunion (Ray Cappo, Porcell, Ken Olden + a drummer who isn't Sammy), Low Threat Profile, Omar Souleyman, Hooded Menace, Lower Dens, Double Negative, FYP, Oneohtrix Point Never, Veins (their only show ever), Universal Order of Armageddon, and many many others. Oh, and by the way, the previously discussed Autopsy appearance will be their only US show of the year. Full list of bands playing the multi-venue party is below.

In related news, Low Threat Profile (members of Lack Of Interest/Infest/No Comment) released their debut LP via Deep Six Records before the new year. Pick it up at your favorite distro/webstore, like Tankcrimes or Phantom City.

Universal Order of Armageddon play NYC TWICE soon; on 1/21 at Cake Shop with Trophy Wife (and more TBA) and 1/22 at Death By Audio with The Body, Orphan, and (according to Youth Attack) Salvation. Take note, the lineups have changed since we first posted, and differ from what Kill Rock Stars has posted (click the link for Baltimore and Philly date info too).

Universal Order of Armageddon

A semi-secret show for No Age plus a homecoming/reunion for Universal Order of Armageddon, meant a tightly packed Death By Audio in Brooklyn last night (July 25th).

No Age played Brooklyn Bowl earlier in the day after Pool Party officials scrapped the outdoor event and moved it inside due to the coming rain-pocalypse. UOA was on a return trek to NYC after playing Whartscape in Baltimore over the weekend.

Silk Flowers opened the Death By Audio show that reports say sold out briskly (doy). From the looks of it, it was a bit of a madhouse. But don't take my word for it, ask David Cross... More pictures from the show, UOA's setlist and a video, below...

"Seth" @ Union Pool - July 24, 2010 (amythistle)
Seth

TheDeathSet, No Age, Lightning Bolt and Cap'n Jazz play today's free Pool Party at the Williamsburg Waterfront Brooklyn Bowl. Afterwards? Well, Cap'n Jazz is playing Maxwell's (yes, they are), and it looks like a band with five letters total in their name (?? ???) are headlining that Universal Order Of Armageddon show at Death By Audio. hmm...

Speaking of secret shows, Les Savy Fav guitarist Seth Jabour is getting married. To celebrate, his bandmates held him a bachelor party at Union Pool last night which was a ladies-only Les Savy Fav concert. That's a picture taken at the show above. One more, along with the invite, below...

Universal Order of Armageddon

Well, let's not say "reuniting." Writes drummer-turned-Del Posto pastry chef Brooks Headley: "It's not a reunion! It's a money losing labor of love!" Of all the bands from the first great American early '90s post-hardcore wave--Born Against, Moss Icon, Man Is the Bastard, etc.--Universal Order of Armageddon seemed like one of the longest shots to reunite: their reign was brief and fierce and lasted only a couple of years in the first place. But a benefit for Baltimore's Wham City drew them back in, and now Headley brings news that the band will perform in New York at Death By Audio (with locals Silk Flowers) the day after their already announced July 24th return at Whartscape. - [Village Voice]
That's right, Universal Order of Armageddon will reunite for a one-off show on July 25th at Death by Audio at 11pm. Members of UOA have gone on join bands like Born Against, Bellmer Dolls, The Great Unraveling, Men's Recovery Project, Moss Icon and many others. If it's one tenth as good as the Rorschach reunion, you had better be there.

Whartscape has quite a few killer bands slated for appearance including Lightning Bolt, Arab on Radar, Dan Deacon Ensemble, and many many more. Tickets are on sale in daily and "megapass" (aka all weekend) varieties (though if you want to seee UOaA, take note). Full updated Whatscape lineup and some videos are below...
