Vampire Weekend in Brooklyn in 2012 (more by Greg Cristman)
Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend, who already have two excellent albums under their belt, have announced in an interview with Q Magazine that they'll release a third album this spring (via Consequence of Sound). The album was co-produced by Ariel Rechtshaid (who co-wrote Usher's "Climax," co-produced Sky Ferreira's "Everything is Embarrassing," and played bass in Foreign Born) and Vampire Weekend's Rostam Rostam Batmanglij. The band recently performed a new song, "Unbelievers," on Jimmy Kimmel Live. If you missed it, you can watch the video of that performance below.

Speaking of Week(e)nd bands with new album plans, Canadian R&B singer The Weeknd, who commercially released his three 2011 mixtapes as Trilogy in 2012, announced via Twitter that he's got a new album coming this year too. He tweeted a picture of his computer's desktop which has two folders -- one called "2013 untitled album" and another called "2013 art work." That picture is below.

Dirty Projectors / Real Estate @ St. Ann & the Holy Trinity, 11/17/2012
Dirty Projectors
Real Estate

Without the rhythm section, [Dirty Projectors'] meticulous vocal work was overwhelming. The songs seemed less tightly wound, voices filling up the tall room in a wash, punctuated only by the peculiar, skewed twang of Longstreth's guitar playing. The band skipped hits "Stillness Is the Move" and "Gun Has No Trigger." Instead, Swing Lo Magellan cuts like "See What She Seeing" and "Impregnable Question" stood out thanks to slower, more delicate interpretations. For the band's last song, Longstreth revived the title track from his 2007 Black Flag covers project, Rise Above. The song's opening lyrics evoked the spirit of the Occupy movement: "Jealous cowards try to control/ They distort what we say/ Try and stop what we do/ When they can't do it themselves." [Rolling Stone]
Dirty Projectors (David Longstreth, Amber Coffman and Haley Dekle), The Walkmen (Hamilton Leithauser, Walter Martin, and Peter Bauer), Cass McCombs, Devendra Banhart, Vampire Weekend, and Real Estate teamed up for a show of intimate acoustic sets at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity in Brooklyn on Saturday (11/17). The show was a benefit for Occupy Sandy, where all proceeds were donated.

More pictures from the benefit are below.

It's a day show which runs from noon to 5 PM. Vampire Weekend on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night

Vampire Weekend were musical guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Halloween night (10/31) which is being broadcast this week from Brooklyn (though they canceled Monday's show due to Hurricane Sandy). Dressed as skeletons, they performed a brand new song, "Unbelievers," as well as their old chesnutt "Oxford Comma." Video of both songs is below.

Tonight's Jimmy Kimmel Live will features Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert, plus The Avett Brothers with the Broooklyn Philharmonic, which should be pretty cool.

Videos are below.

Sharon Jones @ Bonnaroo 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Sharon Jones

Jimmy Kimmel couldn't have had worse luck with the timing of his week of tapings at BAM here in Brooklyn, but after cancelling Monday due to hurricane, things are now a go again:

...a rep for the show tells E! News that "Jimmy Kimmel Live! will broadcast an original show tonight from the Harvey Theater at BAM - Brooklyn Academy of Music."

Kimmel himself even tweeted about the good news, writing, "Unless something weird happens, tonight's show in #Brooklyn is ON like fleece on Gov Christie."

The guest lineup for tonight will be the same as the one that was originally planned for Monday, which includes radio personality Howard Stern and 30 Rock star Tracy Morgan, as well as Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings.

The full week's schedule below...

Jerry Garcia

Jerry Garcia, who died in 1995, would have been 70 years old today (8/1) and, as you might imagine, there are some celebrations happening all over the country. Probably the world.

Here in NYC, you can head to Beekman Beer Garden tonight (8/1) to catch 7 Walkers (featuring Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead, George Porter, Jr. of the Meters, Papa Mali and Matt Hubbard) and Dead satellite musician Steve Kimock with Bernie Worrell, Andy Hess & John Morgan Kimock, and Yarn. Tickets for that show are still available.

Perhaps more interesting to regular readers of this site is a concert happening on Friday (8/3) that will be broadcast on the internet from Bob Weir's TRI Studios. Dubbed "Move Me Brightly: Celebrating Jerry Garcia's 70th Birthday," the tribute features Cass McCombsCraig Finn and Tad Kubler of The Hold Steady; Chris Tomson of Vampire Weekend; former Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia Band vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux; Jim Lauderdale; and Sam Cohen and Josh Kaufman of Yellowbirds , plus more usual suspects like Mike Gordon (Phish); Joe Russo (Furthur); Neal Casal (Chris Robinson Brotherhood/Ryan Adams & The Cardinals); Jeff Chimenti (Furthur); Jonathan Wilson; and Harper Sim. Amiable actor Luke Wilson will emcee the show and Bob Weir will be there too.

The tribute concert starts at 6:30 PM on Friday (8/3) and can be streamed via TRI Studios website or Yahoo Music. Bob Weir talks a little (very little) about the tribute in a video which you can watch below.

In other Dead news, on September 1 the band will release Spring 1990, an 18-CD box set featuring six complete shows from the tour of the set's title. If you don't want to plunk down $200 for that, Rhino will release a double-CD compilation culled from those recordings. You can watch a video of Bob Weir talking about that time period in the band's career below as well.

Vampire Weekend/Ty Segall/Araabmuzik crowd - Pitchfork Fest 2012
Pitchfork Festival 2012
Pitchfork Festival 2012
AraabMuzik

Thank god for the Chicago Transit Authority. Several "cooling stations" (city buses) that provided respite from the onslaught of heat and humidity at the third day of Pitchfork 2012 in Chicago's Union Park (7/15), a weather pattern which replaced the previous days' periodic downpours. The heat, combined with squirt guns & bikini tops, helped create the perfect setting for performances from the sunny tennis-sweater rock of Vampire Weekend and dream pop of the oh-so-aptly named Beach House.

Random thoughts on the day: Personal highlights for me included a stretch of bands that were unfortunately all clustered across the three stages in the afternoon: Milk Music, Iceage, The Men, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees and Chavez. From catching moments of Kendrick Lamar on the Blue Stage, it was proven to me that he's an excellent live performer, a sentiment clearly echoed by Lady Gaga (who looked on during his set). Onohtrix Point Never's material is compelling, but doesnt fit well on an outdoor festival stage. And it's confirmed, this reviewer still detests Vampire Weekend.

Sound of My Voice

As the Film Stage wrote over a year ago:

Vampire Weekend bandmember and producer Rostam Batmanglij will debut his first film score at The Sundance Film Festival in the drama Sound of My Voice, which was written and directed by his brother Zal Batmanglij.

The film, which according to Pitchfork (via Playlist) centers on a couple of cult-infiltrators in California, is Zal's first feature-length production. While little else is known about this indie, Rostam's involvement could mean a soundtrack release.

Though I don't know about the soundtrack release, much more is known this film now - since that was written in January 2011, and the film has not only screened at Sundance, but at SXSW too (and probably other places).

Now, Sound of My Voice finally opens in theaters tonight (4/27) via Fox Searchlight who is giving it a wider release. Check out the first 12 minutes of the movie at its website, or just view the creepy trailer, below...

Vampire Weekend

"Model Ann Kirsten Kennis asked a federal court in Los Angeles to dismiss the case, after she reached a settlement with Vampire Weekend and its label, XL Records. Details of the settlement were not disclosed. The case was dismissed yesterday by court order.

Kennis sued in 2010 after photographer Tod Brody licensed a Polaroid image of Kennis for use on the cover of the band's Contra album. The band also used the image to promote its Contra tour.

Brody allegedly provided the image--which was shot in the 1980s-- to Vampire Weekend with a forged model release. According to court papers, he was paid $5,000 for the image license. It is unclear who shot the image, or how Brody obtained it." [Photo District News] (via)

The article goes on to say that the case between Vampire Weekend the photographer is still open.
