Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) today announced that they would now include streaming sales in the calculation of Gold and Platinum albums. Here's how it breaks down:
After a comprehensive analysis of a variety of factors - including streaming and download consumption patterns and historical impact on the program - and also consultation with a myriad of industry colleagues, the RIAA set the new Album Award formula of 1,500 on-demand audio and/or video song streams = 10 track sales = 1 album sale. Also effective today, RIAA's Digital Single Award ratio will be updated from 100 on-demand streams = 1 download to 150 on-demand streams = 1 download to reflect streaming's enormous growth in the two plus years since that ratio was set.Seventeen albums were certified gold (500,000) or platinum (1 million) with the news, including Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, Big Sean's Dark Sky Paradise, and Coldplay's Ghost Stories (all of which were all declared platinum). The entire list of albums is below...

Outkast / Kate Nash / Nas / Parquet Courts
Besides Eminem on Friday, Saturday was heavy on hip-hop heavyweights. First up was Nas, who dedicated the first half of his set to his 1994 debut album "Illmatic" from start to finish. Unlike Eminem, and other EDM-based acts this weekend, Nas commandeered the massive stage on his own, accompanied by only a DJ. "All I need is one mic, two turntables and you," he said. True enough, those songs remain poignant, especially the funk saga "N.Y. State of Mind," the jazz-fused street scenes of "It Ain't Hard to Tell" and "One Love," a universal shout-out to incarcerated friends. The personal imagery in those songs, combined with his solitary presence onstage, summoned the sense of a testimonial before God, his peers, a lover, his family -- It was all packed in there ready for unpacking. - [Chicago Sun Times]Day Two at Lollapalooza 2014 seemed mostly smooth sailing, seeing performances by hip hop icons Outkast and Nas, indie rock from Parquet Courts and Spoon, not to mention Kate Nash, Vic Mensa, Phosphorescent, Duke Dumont and lots more. Pictures from Saturday (8/2) are in this post.

DOWNLOAD: Dune Rats - "Red Light, Green Light" (MP3)
Speaking of Australia, Brisbane fuzz rock duo Dune Rats (aka Danny Beus and BC Michaels), who were one of Andy from Cake Shop's "21 Amazing Experience of 2012", surfaced with two EPs in 2011, Sexy Beach and Social Atoms, and they're planning to follow that with another EP, titled Smile, and eventually a debut full length at some point this year. No exact details on those releases exist, but the band recently released a single, "Red Light, Green Light," which you can download for free at the top of this post. It's of the Wavves-y stoner/beach rock variety and you can watch the video below, which consists entirely of both members smoking a variety of bongs (and I'm pretty sure they're actually doing it).
Dune Rats will be coming to the US for a tour surrounding SXSW this March which hits NYC on March 20 at Cake Shop (other bands TBA), March 21 at Shea Stadium with The Beets, Hard Nips, Juniper Rising, and Heeney, and March 24 at Sons of Essex. A list of all dates and the tour flyer below.
Their SXSW shows include the annual Aussie BBQ, and Dune Rats are only one of many Aussie bands coming over to Austin for SXSW, including Alpine, Flume, Kirin J Callinan, WIM, and others. The full list of Australian bands that will be at SXSW is below.
