Pitchfork

Yesterday, Pitchfork posted their top 200 tracks of the decade so far, and today they've listed the top 100 albums to have come out between 2010-2014. There's some surprises on there. For example, I didn't expect to see Bon Iver's self-titled, their #1 album of 2011 and with a score of 9.5, rank as low as #27 on this list. I was also surprised to see Chief Keef make it but not, say, Shabazz Palaces or Schoolboy Q. And there's a few other glaring omissions: nothing by The National? Grizzly Bear? One thing that will surprise no one though, is their #1 pick.

You can check out the full list below...

It has officially become news when there are no overdoses at your EDM festival. Let's hope Electric Zoo can get a story like that, though we're not sure it will be because of their public service announcement.

Rakim at Rock the Bells 2010 (more by Eric Townsend)
Rakim

It's the new year, and like every year, there's a ton of great hip hop shows coming up in NYC, especially a lot this month (and of course a few announced for the months after that). So while you're trying to stay warm during the coldest winter, here's some of those shows you might want to check out:

As discussed, Jay Z brings his Magna Carter World Tour to his stomping grounds of Barclays Center on Sunday (1/12) and Monday (1/13). If you can't make the Brooklyn dates, or just still need more Hov in your life, there's other nearby dates happening at Mohegan Sun (1/17), Nassau Coliseum (1/19), and Prudential Center (1/22). Tickets for those shows are still available.

A bunch of golden-age rappers are joining forces for the Masters of Ceremony show at Radio City Music Hall on January 24 with DMX, EPMD, Rakim, Naughty by Nature, Brand Nubian, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick, Biz Markie, and Black Sheep. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Another long-running NYC rapper, Talib Kweli will play the second annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at SOB's on January 19, and this one also honors the late Nelson Mandela. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Also at SOB's on January 27, producer 9th Wonder will celebrate the release of his label Jamla Records' Jamla is the Squad compilation album. Statik Selektah hosts for the night, and the show will also feature ADD-2, Rapsody and the entire Jamla team -- Actual Proof, HaLo, GQ, Heather V and more -- with special guests. Not sure whose those guests will be, but the album features appearances from Jadakiss, Styles P, Talib Kweli, Elzhi, Phonte, and more. Stream a 9th Wonder-produced Rapsody track from the compilation, below. Tickets are on sale now.

Sooner than that, SOB's hosts Le1f/Mykki Blanco collaborator Ian Isiah on Wednesday (1/8). That show also features Benja, Silverbird, Rising Sun Allstars and Quincy Vidal. Tickets are on sale.

And Ty Dolla $ign, who got some internet love for his 2013 mixtape, Beach House 2 (stream below), will play SOB's on January 22 with Black Cobain, Tijon and Gliffics. Tickets are on sale.

Dom Kennedy, who's notably collaborated with Curren$y, Schoolboy Q, Casey Veggies and others, plays NYC on January 28 at Irving Plaza with Skeme. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Another Dom Kennedy collaborator, Nipsey Hussle, plays NYC on January 24 at Highline Ballroom with Erk the Jerk and The Kid Daytona. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Nipsey recently released a new track, "6in Heels," which you can stream below.

Waka Flocka Flame plays NYC on January 27 at BB King's. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

As discussed, J. Cole brings his tour to NYC this month on January 28 at the Theatre at MSG. Tickets are still available.

And 2 Chainz, Pusha T and August Alsina bring their tour to NYC soon after on February 5 at Roseland Ballroom. Tickets for that show are still available.

Other upcoming hip hop shows happening a bit later in the year include Cam'ron at Stage 48 on 2/20 (tickets), Shaggy at Brooklyn Bowl on 2/25 (tickets), and Slaughterhouse at Best Buy Theater on 4/26 (tickets).

And Kanye West just announced a tour.

These are just a few of the upcoming hip hop shows in NYC. What else?

by Klaus Kinski and Joe Mande

Joe Mande

Joe Mande is a comedian and writer. He's been seen on Conan, Comedy Central, and VH1 Best Week Ever. He's also a writer for Parks and Recreation, Delocated, and the upcoming Kroll Show. He's also the brains behind the pitch-perfect project Look At This Fucking Hipster. When you're as brilliantly hilarious as Joe Mande, it's only a matter of time before you get sucked into Olde Man Los Angeles' bosom and have to leave NYC, which is precisely what he did recently much to the dismay of many people who love him, myself included.

I have been an avid fan of Mande since he was knee-high to a grasshopper and getting his start in the NYC comedy scene. There was a time where it seemed like you could catch him on a stage somewhere in this city at least 9-10 times a week. It is his simplest flourishes that kill me the most; for example, his twitter feed is the best. Among other tweet-skillz, he has a knack for re-tweeting the absolutely vapid and pointless horse-shit that a celebrity's pea-brain managed to fart out into cyberspace. And where else can you see a picture like this? I asked Joe for a Top Ten of 2012 list. The results, with accompanying YouTube videos, are below.

Questlove voted today...
Questlove

As you probably know, it's Election Day, November 6th, 2012. Don't slack. Your vote counts, so get out there and cast your ballot (If you're registered and you didn't already do so by now).

Here in NYC and NJ, Hurricane Sandy has thrown a wrench in the polling machinery a bit, but....

Because so many people have been displaced by the storm, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order allowing people to vote in Tuesday's statewide and presidential elections at any polling place in the state. New Jersey had already taken similar measures.

"Just because you are displaced doesn't mean you are disenfranchised," Cuomo said. "Compared to what we have had to deal with in the past week, this will be a walk in the park when it comes to voting." [Pennlive]

Mind you this is only for people located in "federally-declared disaster counties." If you are not in an affected area, you can only vote at your assigned polling station so make sure you know where it is (and note it may be somewhere different this year).

For voters still in affected areas in Rockaway, Staten Island and Coney Island, they've also set up shuttles:

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has designated MTA buses will run shuttle service on Election Day to carry voters from damaged polling places to alternate sites established by the Board of Election on Staten Island and Coney Island and in the Rockaways. The free Election Day shuttle buses will run in addition to other schedule bus service in the areas.

The buses will be marked by "Voter Shuttle" destination signs, and will run from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. to help voters, particularly those displaced by the storm, get to the polling stations.

MTA buses will also be dispatched to carry Board of Election polling station workers from the Queens headquarters in Kew Gardens to their newly assigned polling stations in the three areas. The buses will run in 15 minute intervals.

Routes for the "Voter Shuttle" buses can be viewed here.

Vote Here

NY1 reports this has not gone entirely smoothly though due to last minute changes not allowing enough time for poll workers to be re-trained, and with long lines at some stations, but it seems to vary from neighborhood to neighborhood, and anyway don't let that hold you back. As mentioned before, NY residents can find their assigned polling station here. For the rest of the country, if you are unsure where your polling station is, Rock the Vote's site is also pretty helpful if yourfuckingpollingplace.com doesn't work out for you.

Afterwards you can gather with a crowd and maybe a drink and watch the results come in. We have a list of NYC establishments throwing parties.

We won't ask who you're voting for (just please don't vote for Waka Flocka Flame). We of course do know who Jay-Z and Bruce Springsteen and Will Ferrell are voting for, and The Walkmen pointed out their choice in a picture tweeted earlier today as well, as you can see below...

A$AP Mob at Roseland Ballroom in September (more by Brook Bobbins)
A$AP Mob

A$AP Twelvy is currently on tour with Rocky and the rest of the A$AP Mob, but upon returning home, he'll headline his show in NYC on November 22 at HIghline Ballroom, billed as "A$AP Twelvy & Friends." Tickets for that show go on sale today (10/12) at noon.

Meanwhile, that tour had a short break this week during which soccer video game commercial star A$AP Rocky briefly returned home to NYC, and while he was here, he and Gucci Mane came out as guests at Waka Flocka Flame's Irving Plaza show, which went down this past Tuesday (10/9). You can check out a video of that below. Rocky comes out around 6:03 and in typical Rocky-making-a-surprise-appearance fashion, pretty much blows up the stage at that point.

The short break in the A$AP tour ended last night (10/11) when the mob (and Schoolboy Q and Danny Brown) hit Chicago's Congress Theater and it continues tonight (10/12) in Milwaukee. Pics from the NYC stop at Roseland Ballroom are HERE.

It's too bad that Rocky will be too busy in Salt Lake City to make another trip home for the Flatbush Zombies show at Santos (10/17) during CMJ.

Jet Life

Speaking of hip hop shows at the Highline, Curren$y's Jet Life crew is doing a record release party for Jet Life World Order 2 at Highline Ballroom on November 20, two days before the A$AP Twelvy show. The exact lineup of who will be performing at this show has not been announced yet, other than "special invited guests." Tickets for the show go on sale today (10/12) at noon. Jet Life World Order 2 drops the same day as the release show (11/20) via iHipHop Distribution/Jets International and you can stream the first single, "No Sleep" (feat. feat. Trademark Da Skydiver, Young Roddy & Curren$y), below. The album will also feature Smoke DZA and others. That's the cover art above.

Drake at Jones Beach - 6/16/12 (via Draii Rynell)
Drake

Drake brought his tour with J. Cole, 2 Chainz, Waka Flocka, Meek Mill and French Montana to the NYC area last week for shows at PNC Bank Arts Center (6/12) and Jones Beach (6/16) (and Saratoga, NY show in between - hope you didn't try to get in with your fake ID). The openers on that tour were all in the NYC area earlier this month for Summer Jam, where Drake's Young Money labelmate Nicki Minaj cancelled her headlining performance.

In between the PNC Bank Arts Center and Jones Beach shows, Drake stopped by NYC club W.i.P. at Greenhouse on Wednesday (6/13), where he allegedly got in a fight with Chris Brown over Rihanna, who both singers/rappers have dated. TMZ reports that bottles were thrown, at least 5 people were injured, and the club was left severely damaged. When the NYPD arrived, Chris and Drake had both already left the scene. You may have noticed cover stories the other day on papers like the NY Post. New "victims" are still coming forward (ready to sue).

Meek Mill, who was on tour with Drake, was there too and spoke to XXL about the incident. He said, "Things just happen in the club. I seen girls in there throwing bottles, all types of shit. All types of people. I never seen Chris Brown or Drake throw a bottle and I was there." And when asked if he himself threw a bottle, he responded, "Fuck no."

Game was not there for the fight, but he has collaborated with both Drake and Chris Brown on his 2011 album, The R.E.D. Album, and commented on the fight in an interview with BET:

"That's not a cool beef. They both can stop it now and go about they way, go they separate ways and get they money," he said, adding "If them niggas is rappers, I'm encouraging that shit. But if one of those niggas is an R&B nigga, then y'all need to cut that out. We need some songs to fuck to."
NY Post reports that Drake's reps are insisting he did nothing wrong and Drake is refusing to speak to the NYPD. Wall Street Journal also now reports that the club has been shut down by the police.

Meanwhile, at Drake's Jones Beach show on Saturday (6/16), he brought out a number of guests including a Dipset reunion, The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Busta Rhymes, and more. Regarding the Dipset reunion, FADER writes, "The evening's biggest surprise was a four-song Dipset reunion, with Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and Cam'ron emerging one track at a time to join forces on "' Really Mean It' and 'Salute.'" Check out videos of Drake and his guests below.

Azealia Banks at Coachella 2012 (more by David Andrako)
Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks, who recently canceled a bunch of summer shows due to "recording commitments," has now added more shows to her summer schedule. Most of those are in Europe, but she was just added to the Hot 97 Summer Jam lineup which goes down in East Rutherford, NJ at MetLife Stadium on June 3. The rest of the lineup includes Nicki MInaj, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Waka Flocka Flame, Young Jeezy, J. Cole, Wale, and more. Tickets for the fest are available. The full lineup is listed below.

UPDATE: She actually plays the Summer Jam pre-show in the parking lot with the even more impressive lineup of Pusha T, Big K.R.I.T., A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, and Fred the Godson. Your Summer Jam ticket gets you into the pre-show.

In addition to her fickle live schedule, Azealia Banks continues to move around her schedule of releases as well. As of right now, she's planning to get her delayed 1991 EP out on May 29 digitally and June 12 physically via Interscope. The cover art for that EP is below. She'll follow it with the Fantastic mixtape, which is due out on July 4, and includes her recently dropped track, "Jumanji," which was produced by Hudson Mohawke and Nick Hook. Grab that track above or stream it below. Finally, her debut full length, Broke With Expensive Taste, which is presumably the album she's been working on with Paul Epworth, is due out in September.

In other news, fresh off her feud with Iggy Azalea (who plays SOBs TONIGHT [5/17]), she's taken a stab at Lil Kim, who refused to collaborate with Azealia because Lil Kim wanted to write her own verse. Azealia had written it for her and insisted, "Everybody knows Lil Kim doesn't write her own raps." We already know that Kim's got beef with Nicki Minaj. Azealia, however, seems down with Nicki and would possibly collaborate with her, but thinks she should ditch the "ugly wigs and ugly costumes." Maybe they'll meet up when they both play Summer Jam next month. On the other hand, Azealia Banks has collaborated with Missy Elliot and Rye Rye on a remix of M.I.A.'s "Bad Girls." Look for that soon.

A list of all dates, Hot 97 Summer Jam lineup, 1991 cover art, and the "Jumanji" stream are below...

Wacka Flocka Flame

Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flame played a private show at the Bowery Hotel on Wednesday, April 25th. The appearance celebrated his appearance on the cover of Spin's "Loud" issue. Before the set, Flocka walked through the room chatting with attendees and posing for photos. The performance itself, which included a few cuts from his forthcoming second LP Triple F Life: Friends, Fans and Family, featured lots of dreadlocked head-banging, crowd-surfing, etc. See Flocka on tour with Drake this summer. Drake at Tammany Hall in 2010 (more by Brook Bobbins)
Drake

Earlier this month, Drake wrapped up a tour with Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky, before the latter two made their way to Austin for SXSW.

That tour didn't hit the NYC area but Drake has since announced another slew of North American dates which include PNC Bank Arts Center on June 12 in Holmdel, NJ and Nikon at Jones Beach Theater on June 16 in Wantagh, NY. Like the Kendrick/A$AP tour, most of the new dates, including both NYC area shows, are with a list of on-their-way-to-being-huge rappers: J. Cole, 2 Chainz (who last played NYC when he sold out SOBs in January), Waka Flocka Flame, Meek Mill, and French Montana. Tickets for the PNC Bank Arts Center show and the Jones Beach show are on sale now.

All dates and the video for "Headlines" below...

ASAP Rocky

A$AP Rocky brought the A$AP Mob tour to Irving Plaza last night (2/1). He brought out a number of guests like Bun B, Waka Flocka, and ScHoolboy Q, and Danny Brown opened the show, along with Flatbush Zombies and G-Eazy. More pictures and a video from this show are below.

One day earlier, A$AP Rocky appeared on The Angie Martinez Show on Hot 97. He was shocked when during his interview, Rakim, who Rocky's mother named him after, joined Rocky and Martinez on the show. A video of this interview is below too.

The Irving Plaza afterparty went down at The Studio at Webster Hall where a very tall Jim E Stack DJ'd in celebration of his new release. Did any of the advertised special guests show up?

ScHoolboy Q also showed up at the recent Danny Brown show in LA.

More pictures and videos from the NYC show below...

SLim Dunkin

Atlanta police are still trying to figure out who gunned down rapper Slim Dunkin in an Atlanta a recording studio Friday afternoon -- and why?

Police Major Keith Meadows said Saturday there have been no arrests in the shooting.

"We're still talking to people," Meadows said. "The truth is we don't know exactly what happened."

Witnesses told police the 24-year-old rap star, whose real name is Mario Hamilton, got into an argument before a video shoot at a studio on Memorial drive about 5:30 Friday afternoon. The person he was arguing with pulled out a pistol and shot Hamilton in the chest. Hamilton was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital. [Atlanta News]

Slim Dunkin appeared on Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame's Ferrari Boyz album released this summer on Brick Squad 1017/Warner Brothers, as well as on Waka's studio debut, Flockaveli.

Lupe Fiasco

Lupe Fiasco is currently in Australia as part of the Big Day Out Festival, touring with names like Iggy Pop, Deftones, Grinderman, and countless others. After returning back to the states, he'll get ready to welcome his new LP Lasers into this world, due on March 8th. The Chicago MC will celebrate the release with a date at Webster Hall the night before it hits the streets and tickets go on sale at noon today (1/28). Lupe recently released the first single from the LP, the Modest Mouse-sampling "The Show Must Go On" via iTunes.

Tickets also go on sale at noon for Rick Ross at Best Buy Theater on March 4th, and fortunately if you can't make that show you can make it out to see him support Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj at Nassau Coliseum on March 27th as part of the I Am Music II tour. Ticket info for that show hasn't been released yet. All dates below.

Those of you who want to see Lil Wayne but might prefer to see him in a much (much) different setting than the third of three hip hop acts (instead with Motley Crue, Waka Flocka Flame, Insane Clown Posse & Bruno Mars?) can catch the recently freed MC at Bamboozle 2011 in New Jersey. Tickets are still available for the festival in multi-day, and single day pass increments.

And lets say, for some godforsaken reason you felt like a double dose of Insane Clown Posse.... that can be arranged. Insane Clown Posse has taken time off of their busy wrestling schedule to shower New York City with Faygo on April 29th at Gramercy Theater. Tickets are still available all of you Juggalos and Juggalettes!

Full Bamboozle lineup and all Lil Wayne tour dates are below.
