Mountain Man also played day two of the fest. Pictures of their set are HERE. Pictures from the first day are HERE. The rest from day two, below...
David Wax Museum at B.O.M.B. Fest in May (more by Eric M. Townsend)

"David Wax is a rabbi in New Jersey recently accused of murder, but that's not the David Wax who fronts the David Wax Museum, a Latin folk band! This is all a terrible coincidence. David Wax and the other members play a raucous, Mexican-tinged folk music that also pays homage to indie rock (but without any ironic detachment)."David Wax Museum kicked off a run of summer dates at Clearwater Festival last month. They've got more scheduled through September including a free NYC show tonight (7/27) in Madison Square Park, before they hit the SOLD OUT Newport Folk Festival this weekend. Tonight's show is part of the Madison Square Music Oval Lawn Series, which presents free music in Madison Square Park every Wednesday through August 10. Doors open at 7 PM.
[Express Night Out]
Wanda Jackson, who also plays Newport, plays a free show in NYC tonight (7/27) too. Hers is at Central Park Summerstage with Imeida May.
The Head and the Heart also play Newport and have more shows coming up including 3 headlining shows in NYC, and one at the Dave Matthews Band Caravan which hits Governors Island for three days (8/26-28). They play Governors Island that Saturday, as do David Wax Museum (don't hold it against them).,
All David Wax tour dates, a video of them performing at NPR's Tiny Desk, and a new live video too, below...

The trooper stopped the car "and discovered that the two occupants were enroute to Bonnaroo in Manchester," says a news release from the THP. [Herald Citizen]

"The set was a kind of live greatest hits, with Jackson tearing through countless signature tunes like "Mean Mean Man" and "Funnel Of Love." A few selections from The Party Ain't Over included "Shakin' All Over" and "You Know I'm No Good," which was impressive to hear rearranged for a four-piece band without a horn section. As she mentioned in regards to her new album, Wanda's performance was a showcase for all the different points of her career. Starting in country, moving to rock, then back to country, then gospel; Wanda has tackled them all and brought that variety to her show. Her backing group, The Lustre Kings, gave Jackson plenty of room to dominate the spotlight. This show belonged to Wanda, but she was plenty willing to share the fun." [Ugly Rumors]That review comes from the 2/22 Philly show at World Cafe Live. Wanda Jackson & the Lustre Kings continued their tour at Bowery Ballroom in NYC last night (2/24). Unlike in Brooklyn or on Letterman, Jack White and friends were not the backing band this time, but the show was sold out nonetheless (just not as fast). More pictures from the Bowery show below...

"On Tuesday, Third Man and Nonesuch Records will release "The Party Ain't Over," Ms. Jackson's first studio album in eight years and the first produced by a paragon of contemporary rock: Jack White. The collaboration, with Mr. White playing guitar, is largely retro, a collection of covers recorded live with a 12-piece band. But everyone involved hopes it will introduce Ms. Jackson to a new audience, affording her a level of attention that's closer to her more famous contemporaries like Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash, all of whom she performed with. "She's influential to every modern female singer, whether they know about her or not," Mr. White said. "She broke down those walls in the beginning, when it was the hardest to do."" [NY Times]Wanda Jackson's album, as the big NY Times feature points out, is out today (Tuesday). Thursday night Wanda, Jack, and the "Third Man House Band" played Letterman. One night later was the big (small) show at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Pictures from that show are in this post.
Since then, Jack and Wanda went on to play two shows at the El Rey in LA...
"He led an 11-piece band of youngish talents, including drummer Joey Waronker, bassist Olivia Jean and pedal steel player Rich Gilbert, through rollicking versions of Jackson's old hits and new tunes. The septuagenarian singer held forth center stage, relishing her comeback with a charming mix of feisty come-on and self-confessed senior moments. They will appear on fellow Third Man Records recording artist Conan O'Brien's show tonight.A true raconteur, Jackson amused the crowd with tales of Presley and White, the charismatic, genius sex symbols who book-end her career. "He's a velvet-covered brick," she said of White. "He's going to get his way, but he does it so sweetly." Before playing the classic lament "Busted," she pointed out that she'd seen Elvis play in Vegas, then fluttered a piece of paper: "If the King of Rock can have notes, so can the Queen."" [LA Times]
Wanda, possibly without Jack and the Third Man band, hits the road again in February. Tickets are still on sale for her show at Bowery Ballroom.
More pictures & some videos from MHOW are below...

Tickets are still available for Wanda Jackson's February 24th show at Bowery Ballroom, though I bet they wouldn't be if Jack White was playing the show like he will be on Friday night at Music Hall of Williamsburg, and like he did last night on Letterman. Video of the TV appearance, below...

Wanda Jackson, who will be flanked by the Third Man House Band featuring Jack White, will play sold out shows in Brooklyn and LA next week. If you didn't get your ticket for Ms Jackson, then you're in luck. "The Queen of Rock" will return to NYC one month later to play Bowery Ballroom on February 24, but note: the Third Man House Band is not billed as her band on the the Manhattan show. Tickets go on sale at noon.
We also have a pair of tickets to giveaway to the sold out Brooklyn show that Jack White is playing. Details below.
Wanda Jackson also has a pair of TV appearances lined up in the coming weeks; look for her on David Letterman on January 20th and Conan on January 25th. Jack White and the Third Man House Band will be playing at both of those.
Wanda is prepping to release her new Jack-White-produced-LP The Party Ain't Over via Third Man/Nonesuch Records on January 25th. The LP features Mr. White as well as his wife (Karen Elson), in addition to bandmates Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather/Raconteurs, also The Greenhornes) & Patrick Keeler (Raconteurs also The Greeenhornes), and other greats like Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket). The LP features eleven covers from the past century, and you can check out the tracklisting below.
The Greenhornes are going on tour soon too. They play The Bell House on April 8th (tickets) and Maxwell's on April 9th (tickets).
The above picture is taken from a video where "label head Jack White, takes an on-camera minute to explain some of its latest creations. From the The Greeting Card Gatefoldâ„¢ limited edition release of upcoming Wanda Jackson LP "The Party Aint Over" to the The Third Man Monkey Bandâ„¢ - only at the store front in Nashville, TN. This fantastically old-time machine plays clips of exclusive, unreleased music from Third Man Records." That video, Wanda's full tour schedule and her tracklisting is below...

Wanda Jackson and the Third Man House Band (featuring Jack White) will play two shows in January. In addition to the previously mentioned 1/21 show at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn (on sale at noon), they'll appear at the El Rey Theatre in LA on 1/23 (on sale at 10am PST).

"Today we're making available for Pre-sale the fantastic, Jack White produced, Wanda Jackson LP "The Party Ain't Over".Wanda Jackson's last two Brooklyn shows took place at Knitting Factory. The next one will take place at a slightly larger, but still intimate, venue which is good because more people will want to crowd in to catch her with "the Third Man house band featuring Jack White on guitar." Tickets for the January 21st Music Hall of Williamsburg show go on Third Man Vault Presale Wednesday at 11am, and then general sale Friday at noon. This record will ship in time to be received on the release date of January 25th. Housed in a gatefold sleeve and pressed on 180grm vinyl this is already a very special release by a real legend of rock and roll and country music. But to make things just a little more special we're offering a free screen print from Nashville legends, Hatch Show Print with the first 1000 Pre-orders we receive. This will be a different poster then the one being offered with the Nonesuch CD. Lastly, there will be 100 fuchsia colored (!!) vinyl LPs inserted into random Pre-orders. See? We told you the party ain't over!" - Third Man Records

"Clyde and I will be playing this early show [at Knitting Factory] in Brooklyn [on Friday, October 8th] before Wanda Jackson and Lustre Kings play a 9:30pm show. You do have to buy separate tickets for our show and for Wanda Jackson, but what a night! Woowee! Doors are at 6:30 and we start at 7 and it is all ages but this is not specifically a kids' show. Be forewarned- F*Bombs will drop- if you don't like your kids to hear "profanities" (or songs about jerking off and creamed jeans and hot queer rooftop escapades) leave your kids at home.Kimya Dawson has no other upcoming dates, and did not recently participate in the final Dufus show at Cake Shop though four other members of the Moldy Peaches did."But Kimya! That is the night of our 20 year class reunion! How could you be in New York and make plans the same night?!" You ask.
OH SHIT THE REUNION?! Oops. Wait, I wasn't even planning on going. I have no desire to hang out at a football game or a bar all night but maybe we could meet up Saturday morning at a playground and say hi. I'd love to meet your kids- just maybe not at my show (or a football game or a bar).
Okay fuckers, seriously, this show is going to be GREAT!!!! You love Your Heart Breaks, even if you don't know it yet.
And I might even be making sharpie shirts for the first time since I developed an aversion to sharpie smell when I was pregnant.
Anything else you need to know? Start flexing your triceps. I want some solid hugging. Solid. Solid as The Rock." [Kimya Dawson]
Jeffrey Lewis on the other hand (who she plays in the Bundles with) has a bunch of shows coming up (all with The Vaselines)

O'Death @ the 2010 Newport Folk Fest

"The only way O'Death could be a better name for a Gothic folk-punk band would be if the band only performed on St. Patrick's Day. As it is, the New York group plays grippingly intense Americana, in the process bringing to mind the white-knuckle hellrides of 16 Horsepower. Here, O'Death plays songs from its latest album, Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin, at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I."After some depressing setbacks, O'Death are back. You can stream their recent set from the Newport Folk Festival at NPR, and catch them live, tonight (8/20), at the Rock Shop.
[stream their Newport Folk Fest set @ NPR]
Opening the Rock Shop show are The Goddamn Rattlesnake and Deer Tick associate Jonny Corndawg WHO IS ALSO playing Union Pool tonight with Lucero associates Glossary (who are on a short Northeast tour).
Jonny Corndawg also plays Knitting Factory (again) on October 8th with.... Wanda Jackson! It will be Wanda'a 2nd show at the new-ish Brooklyn venue. The queen of rock also played there in February. The Lustre Kings also play the October show, and tickets are on sale.
More pics of O'Death @ Newport, with some Corndawg videos and all dates below...

"We love you, Wanda!" a young woman shouted plaintively from the back of the packed room at [February 11th]'s Wanda Jackson show at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, N.Y. The 72 year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer smiled, a bit surprised and moved at the same time. In a flash, the moment was gone as she and the Lustre Kings kicked into high gear with 'Funnel of Love,' a song she recorded in 2003 with the Cramps. The mostly young 20 and 30-something crowd roared like it was 1959.More (somewhat belated) pictures from that show, below...A lot of music history has passed under the bridge since Jackson first started wowing audiences back in the '50s. Rock 'n' roll has gone from teen party music to art house respectability and back again. It's gone from recording on analog tape machines the size of a small car to digital hard drives that fit in your hand, and from 45s to cassingles to iTunes. The irony wasn't lost on Jackson, who took the time to search out one of her new 7" vinyl singles -- recently released on Jack White's Third Man Records -- from a front-row fan and hold it up for all to see in a moment of well-earned pride and humble amazement. Wanda Jackson @ the 2009 Ponderosa Stomp (more by Jacob Blickenstaff)

The legendary Wanda Jackson will be rolling into town and starting a riot on stage at the Knitting Factory (Brooklyn) on Thursday Feb. 11th! 2009 was a huge year for the Rock N Roll icon as she was finally inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, had a street in her home state of Oklahoma named after her, and performed for sold old crowds all over the world! The year came to a close with Wanda receiving a slew of international publicity with rumors that Jack White would be working with her on some new music. So, 2010 is already shaping up to be as interesting for Wanda and her fans as Hurricane Wanda blows into Brooklyn next month!Tickets for the Brooklyn show are on sale. All dates below...

The Dead Weather @ Home Sweet Home in July (more by Ryan Muir)

The Dead Weather will be performing at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight (11/17) with an opening set by Ecstatic Peace-signed Australians Violent Soho. To go with that, some other Jack White news...
Jack White will be working with "Queen of Rockabilly" Wanda Jackson. The pairing sounds similar to what White did with Loretta Lynn for her 2004, Grammy-winning record Van Lear Rose, but Jackson says, "They had a super album, but he didn't have her do anything different, you know. She just did her little Loretta Lynn songs. But he told me he's gonna stretch me some, so we'll see." A 2009 Rock n Roll Hall of Fame nominee, Wanda recently performed at the Ponderosa Stomp in New Orleans.
One album White will not be helping with is the new record from Slash. On the nature of that, Slash said, "I wanted to get Jack White to sing on something, but he didn't want to sing. He said 'I'll play drums, I'll play guitar, but I don't wanna sing.'" Slash did manage to get "Dave Grohl, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Grohl, Flea and three of former Guns N' Roses bandmates, Izzy Stradlin, Steven Adler and Duff McKagan" though.
Another project White has had a hand in putting out is composer John Boswell's remix of Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" series called "A Glorious Dawn." The song puts a beat under Sagan's auto-tuned narration and features a guest spot from Stephen Hawking. The track, on YouTube since September (below), is out now through White's Third Man Records.
The Dead Weather also just put out a record of their own, an unannounced EP called Live from Third Man West, which features five songs and four videos from their performance at a promotional pop-up store in Los Angeles in August (similar to what they did in New York in July). You can get it through iTunes.
The Dead Weather play Wednesday too (November 18th) at the mtvU Woodie Awards at Roseland Ballroom, and travel to New Zealand, Australia and Japan in March, 2010.
Tour dates and "A Glorious Dawn" are below...

Ira Kaplan, The A-Bones + Flamin' Groovies

Among the resurrected bluesmen, rockabilly cats, garage rockers and soul shouters at the eighth annual Ponderosa Stomp were various "Littles," including Little Willie Littlefield, Little Joe Washington, Lil' Buck Sinegal -- not to mention Long John Hunter and Lazy Lester. Though each of these acts that held court at the festival (held April 28 and 29 at the House of Blues in New Orleans), and several others -- including a master's class given by newly inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Wanda Jackson -- demonstrated the breadth and width of American music, one undisputed highlight was the Wednesday reunion of the two prime forces in the Flamin' Groovies, who played a set together for the first time since 1971.Pictures from Day One are HERE. The rest of Day Two, below...Groovies frontman Roy Loney and guitarist Cyril Jordan, who co-founded the Bay Area rock band in 1965, tore through selections from the three critically heralded LPs released before Loney's departure, with backing by Brooklyn combo the A-Bones (which featured Yo La Tengo's Ira Kaplan on keyboards and guitar, and, appropriately, former Flamin' Groovies Fan Club president Miriam Linna behind the drum kit). As Loney explains, "Cyril and I rehearsed in San Francisco and the A-Bones rehearsed in New York" -- yet this bicoastal convergence showed no signs of disconnect, jelling as if they were a long-estabished unit. Iggy Pop & the Stooges @ Virgin Fest (more by Bao Nguyen)

The nominations for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum were announced today. The nine nominees are: Jeff Beck, Chic, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Metallica, Run-D.M.C., the Stooges, War, and Bobby Womack. Ballots will be sent to more than 500 voters, who will select artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 24th Annual Induction Ceremony on April 4 at historic Public Hall in Cleveland. For the first time, tickets to the ceremony will be made available to the public.
To be eligible for nomination into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an act must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. This year's nominees had to release their first single no later than 1983.
