Peelander-Z

Japanese action comic punks Peelander-Z recently played Warped Tour. The tour included stops at NY's Nassau Coliseum and NJ's Monmouth Park. Pictures from both shows are in this post.

Peelander-Z will return to the Brooklyn stage later this month when they present P-Pop-Party #2 at Death By Audio on August 24 with "Japanese Gypsy Cabaret" group Izumi Goto, Luke and the Cocktails (members of Peelander-Z and Anamanaguchi), Peelander-Z's sister band Peewonder-Z, and possibly a special guest from Planet-Peelander. A couple of weeks later the often-touring band will get back on the road for yet another tour. Their tourmates include The Aggrolites and Those Darlins. All dates are listed below.

In other Peelander-Z news, their greatest hits album Super DX Hitz is out now via Chicken Ranch Records as a CD/DVD combo that includes five karaoke videos. You can order the CD from the Chicken Ranch webstore. Check out a karaoke video for "S.T.E.A.K.", with more pics from Warped Tour and all dates below...

"Really digging Lucero right now.
They're my "new to me" Warped Tour band for 2011." - Mandi Loranger

"Also Lucero's little jabs at Warped Tour were pretty hysterical." - Jared Chalfin

Lucero

One of the few bands we love on this year's Vans Warped Tour, Lucero, played a secret show at Mercury Lounge on Saturday (7/23), the same day Warped Tour hit Nassau Coliseum. The Mercury Lounge show had a delayed opening due to cops/fire marshal arriving which was related to some confusion from the large crowds outside and inside the venue as the earlier Heartless Bastards show ended. Once it got started though, it lasted for almost two hours. They played all the hits, two encores and two new songs off an album they'll start recording in September.

We don't have pictures from the Merc show, where they were billed as "Nobody's Darlings," but Andrew St. Clair braved the Warped Tour and brought back these pictures from their set there. More of them, with a video from the Mercury show, below...

Nobodys Darlin

Tickets go on sale Thursday for a "Nobody's Darlings" show happening at Mercury Lounge in NYC this Saturday night. In possibly related news, that's the same day the Warped Tour hits Nassau Coliseum.

House of Vans

"Vans made a power move into Brooklyn Saturday October 18, 2010 and unveiled its new, state-of-the-art event space, the House of Vans, opening it's doors to 900 of New York's skate community.

The new space is located in Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighborhood and is a prime example of Vans' commitment to and respect for the East Coast skate scene. The House of Vans is a 25,000-square-foot renovated warehouse, featuring an indoor concrete bowl and outdoor street course, a permanent stage for concerts and enough space to do whatever the Vans heart and soul could desire. The House of Vans will be Vans' East Coast hub, with two full-time employees to start.

The new space's outdoor skate park and bowl, designed by California Skateparks and influenced by Lance Mountain and Brian Pino, were well received by those in attendance." [probably a press release]

The 25,000 square feet House of Vans (15,000 indoors and 10,000 sq. ft outdoor enclosed patio and skate plaza), located at 25 Franklin St (at Meserole), hosted a Warped Tour kick-off show back in March. It's not exactly the type of show we'd normally cover, but when I heard there will be more concerts there this summer (stay tuned for announcements), I asked Andrew to send over some of his shots from that event so we could get an idea of what to expect. They continue below...

Lucero

Lucero played Emo's in Austin, Texas on Tuesday night (2/22), one night before they appeared on Carson Daly (can't find a video), with an assist from Robert Ellis & The Boys. Lucero's set included a cover of Jawbreaker's "Kiss the bottle" and Bill Withers' "Ain't no Sunshine." Speaking of bottles, the four-song encore was accompanied by special guest (bottle of) Jameson. Pictures from that show show are in this post.

The show is/was part of a few tour dates that the band has before they go out for a stretch of dates as part of Warped Tour 2011. That tour, which Peelander-Z is also a part of, hits Nassau Coliseum on July 23rd and Monmouth Park Raceway in Oceanport, NJ the next day. Tickets go on sale 4/1.

Lucero is also on board for Krazy Fest in Louisville on May 20-22 alongside bands like 7 Seconds, Against Me, Hot Water Music, Coalesce, Title Fight (who are coming to NYC), and many others. Not long before then, Hot Water Music frontman Chuck Ragan is scheduled to play the Bell House with Sharks. Tickets for the May 16th show are on sale.

More pictures and tour dates are below.

Guitar Wolf at Santos (more by Keith Marlowe)
Guitar Wolf

Guitar Wolf will return to the US for announced dates in NYC and Chicago in May. No word on if these dates will lead to a full-blown tour, but luckily for NYC we know we can look forward to seeing the Japanese garage punks on May 13th at Knitting Factory with Cheap Time. Tickets are on sale.

The last time Guitar Wolf played NYC was with the cartoonish and superfun Peelander-Z. Peelander currently has no NYC dates (they recently played The Studio at Webster Hall), but will hit the road for a string of dates with Anamanaguchi directly following, and including SXSW, and then they're going on Warped Tour.

All dates, and some videos, below...

Bridge9

The Vans Warped Tour hit Capitol Federal Park at Sandstone in Bonner Springs [August 2nd] with additional performances by artists like Taylor Momsen's The Pretty Reckless, Alkaline Trio, Andrew W.K. and Mike Posner.

But the all-day event ended in tragedy when it emerged one man had died after falling ill at the show.

The victim, Curtis Alan DeForest, a 26-year-old resident of Wichita, Kansas, was taken by ambulance to the Providence Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

A cause of death has yet to be established and a police investigation is now underway. [Toronto Sun]

In a statement on Twitter, Warped Tour organizers addressed speculation that 100 degree heat and a lack of readily available water may have led to dehydration...
"There is no confirmation this was due to dehydration, cardiac, other substances, etc. We do provide first aid to anyone who needs it. If this was due to dehydration, the tour is not responsible for water prices and we change venue rules to allow you to bring it in with you. What's happened today is an unforeseeable tragedy that shouldn't have happened. We are all upset and shocked and our hearts are heavy. Please remember to be responsible when you are at an event like this. At ANY possible sign of a problem, PLEASE contact a venue member."
[via Punknews.org]
As Punknews points out, Bridge9, one of the labels that had a booth at the Kansas stop, tweeted that day about the venue's excessive water prices (see above) (note: the $10 price is not confirmed. they may have been exaggerating to make a point). So far 1,236 people have signed a petition to reduce water prices at the Warped Tour.

The venue, Sandstone Amphitheater, also issued a statement that offered condolences and outlined their water policy. That's below...

Dillinger Escape Plan

Chris's camera broke in the middle of shooting Dillinger Escape Plan at Webster Hall last night (12/29). That means no pictures of Gogol Bordello though we did manage to get them from the previous two shows (night 1 & night 2).

Gogol's pre-New Years Eve NYC run is now complete, but you can still catch Dillinger Escape Plan one more time in the NYC-area before the new year. They play with United Nations, Thursday, and Glassjaw at Starland Ballroom tonight (12/30). Gogol Bordello spend New Years Eve in Charlotesville before moving on to DC for two early January shows.

You can also catch Dillinger in 2010 if you happen to be going to a stop on the Warped Tour (where Andrew WK will also be performing). All dates and more pictures from Tuesday night's show at Webster Hall, below...

7 Seconds & Bouncing Souls on tour in 1994
7secs and BSouls

Twenty years is a major milestone for any band, but in a genre like punk rock that thrives on boundless energy, ducking authority, and youth, it's a particularly notable achievement. This year marks the 20th anniversary of The Bouncing Souls, and yet more clicks on the odometer in the touring van. The band kicks off a set of dates this week with fellow NJ luminaries Lifetime and punk rock legends 7 Seconds.

7 Seconds know a thing or two about longevity. The band is currently approaching it's 30th (!) year and prides itself on being one of the longest standing hardcore bands in existence, joining the esteemed ranks of Bad Brains, DOA, and Circle Jerks among others. Vocalist Kevin Seconds has been the face of the band since inception, spending the last few years on the road as a solo acoustic act, similar to like-minded punks Chuck Ragan, Walter Schriefels, and Greg Attonito of The Bouncing Souls.

On the eve of the Bouncing Souls / 7 Seconds dates in NYC (which impact 8/21 & 8/22, Lifetime opens on 8/20 & 8/23), we got a pair of punk rock veterans to sit down for an interview... with each other! Greg called in to speak with Kevin Seconds while on the Warped Tour, and the two discussed their upcoming tours in their respective bands and as solo artists, as well as what it means to still be a punk in 2009. Read it below....

Bouncing Souls @ Generation Records (more by Jacob Blickenstaff)
Bouncing Souls

Does anyone remember the last time 7 Seconds played NYC? Kevin Seconds was just here solo in February.

The Bouncing Souls, who actually played a show at Toad's Place in New Haven last night (4.29), last played NYC not that long ago. It was acoustic, and free, and for Record Store Day in a record store.

This August, after the Souls get finished with the Warped Tour, The Bouncing Souls and 7 Seconds will team up for a pair of shows in NYC and Philly. Dates and venues TBA. All BS dates below...

DOWNLOAD: Shad - I Don't Like To (MP3)

"...Shad's a far better rapper than Kanye West." [OkayPlayer]

Shad

A last minute addition to the BrooklynVegan party at Pianos during CMJ 2008, rapper Shad was one of that hazy day's highlights and a definite crowd pleaser. He played solo, backed by his DJ, and even sang some songs with a guitar (and I've read he sometimes plays with a full band too). One night before Pianos, Shad played his first NYC show at Arlene's Grocery. Northern Touch was there, and writes...

After a warm Canadian welcome from a CBC radio host Shad took to the stage for the first time performing in NYC to a packed crowd. After introducing his band, a DJ and bassist, Shad got the crowd jumping right away, with a bouncy track, backed by a heavy bass, and precise cuts. Not soon after Shad brought out an acoustic guitar to accompany his spoken word like delivery before slowing adding the band back in the mix to keep the show live and diverse.
Shad has been compared to fellow Canadian emcee K-OS, and Windy City's native son Common, all good company, and fair comparison. But what sets Shad K apart from his piers is his honest, positive easy conversational type flow.
Although Shad hasn't made his mark in the United States yet, the Canadian has already gained some acclaim in his own country where, among other things, he went up against Caribou, Holy Fuck, Plants and Animals, Stars, Basia Bulat, Black Mountain and the Weakerthans for the 2008 Polaris prize. Check out the track above for a taste of why.
"I Tunes, eye-patch
I'm in the same boat where the pirates be
Tell'em I'm down with that pirate stee
They don't buy it, I say don't buy it - pirate me
If it's I'll, it'll spread virally"
Now it's time for him to become known in the US (where he has yet to release his record). Shad will make, what I think will be his second trip to our country this March for at least three appearances at SXSW, and then he'll be back for a much longer stay over the summer when he plays all 45 dates of the Warped Tour. No new NYC dates at the moment unless you count the NYC-area Warped shows which I realize you don't (for more than one reason). All dates, and more CMJ pictures, below...

...featuring Pete 'The Pete' Steinkop and Michael McDermot of Bouncing Souls, DJ Values of Let It Burn, Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance, Andrew Everding of Thursday and Matt Scara of Pitch Black Blonde.
