Bon Iver/The Shins
Bonnaroo Day 4
Bonnaroo Day 4

Oddly enough, 73-year-old Kenny Rogers--a last-minute Bonnaroo addition several decades past from his peak hit-making days--was among the day's breakout acts. Playing for one of his youngest audiences in recent member, Rogers offered a set of hits that included "The Gambler," "Islands in the Stream" and other songs most of the crowd had never seen live. Near the end of his show, Rogers also brought out the weekend's biggest surprise guest, cross-generational pop icon Lionel Richie, to sing on his own "Lady" and "All Night Long" (Richie considers Rogers his mentor and joined the veteran country star at SXSW this past March.) Every year The Mayor of Manchester also awards one Bonnaroo artist the keys to the city, and The Gambler received ths year's honor during an unexpected mid-set ceremony...

Bon Iver, who spent his early years in jam and roots-rock bands but functioned as Sunday's What Stage indie rock headliner, made a point to stretch out his songs a bit more than usual. At one point he called the audience "sunburnt," and he asked them to join him in a call-and-response jam. As more than a few artists pointed out throughout the weekend, hippiedom is still fully engrained in Bonnaroo's DNA. -[Jambands]

Pictures from the final day at Bonnaroo 2012 including Phish, The Shins, Black Lips (who play the 4Knots afterparty), We Are Augustines, The Antlers (who recently played Brooklyn), Kenny Rogers, Bon Iver, Kurt Vile & The Violators (who plays tonight and tomorrow) but not The Beach Boys (which we already posted) are below, alongside video of that surprise Lionel Richie appearance.

If you missed it, make sure and catch up on our coverage of Bonnaroo with pictures of day 1 HERE, day 2 HERE, day 3 HERE and our Beach Boys coverage on day 4 HERE.

Bon Iver/The Walkmen, variations on a theme at Sasquatch - 5/27/12
Sasquatch Festival 2012 - Day 2
Sasquatch Festival 2012 - Day 2

Experiencing live music at The Gorge is a powerful and emotional experience. It may seem unlikely, however, that The Gorge has the power to break even the most emotionally strong person down to tears. When Bon Iver performed "Skinny Love" on Sunday night, tears were not a rare sight. In fact, they were pretty common. Sasquatch! fosters an environment that will change the way you listen to music. Your favorite songs will never sound the same. New songs will become life-changing memories. [Oregon Daily Emerald]
And now the rest of our photos from Day Three (5/26) of the Sasquatch Music Festival in Gorge, Washington which happened Memorial Day Weekend. (First set of Sunday pics are here.) Check out photos of Bon Iver, The Walkmen, Zola Jesus, Little Dragon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Hospitality, and more below.

Pictures of Friday (5/25) are here and Saturday (5/26) are here and here. And...more Sasquatch pictures to come.

"The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival has had some surprises artists in the past. There was some surprise when country act Dierks Bentley made the cut and maybe a little surprise when rap star Emenim was booked. But the 2012 addition of country icon Kenny Rogers may be the most surprising addition to the line-up yet.

Rogers' appearance was announced on April 26. The complete Bonnaroo schedule is expected to be announced soon. The festival will be held June 7-10 in Manchester, Tenn." [Knoxville.com]

I hope he does a duet with Danzig. Meanwhile watch him duet with Lionel below...

BrooklynVegan @ SXSW 2012 - Hotel Vegas and the Voldstead Lounge

BrooklynVegan's Hotel Vegan, located at Austin venues Hotel Vegas & Volstead Lounge, began at noon back on Wednesday, 3/14/2012, on three stages. As "bob dylan wrote propaganda songs" points out:

"...it offered the perfect setting for seeing multiple bands within an intimate setting in a short amount of time. Sure it was a long walk down Sixth Street to get there, and it may not have been the most well kempt venue (I'll be honest, it was a shit-hole), but the three stage set-up provided for prime SXSW day party viewing. I had the pleasure of seeing Chelsea Wolfe, Japandroids, Frankie Rose, Deaf Heaven, and Japandroids all within the span of a couple hours. All of these bands were on my list of bands I wanted to see, and thanks to this venue, I was able to cross more bands off my list than past years"
One of the stages on Wednesday was dedicated to Chicago bands courtesy of BV Chicago, and one was put together by BBG. It was on the latter that we hosted an afternoon set by Deafheaven who created NY Mag's Nitsuh Abebe's favorite moment of SXSW 2012.

Special thanks to our official backline providers Vox, Blackstar and Korg, and thank you to NadaMoo for supplying free vegan treats, and to Honest Tea for the tea.

Sasquatch

"Following last year's 10th anniversary, which crushed previous attendance records and set a new mark for the speed with which tickets sold out, the Sasquatch! Music Festival unveils its 2012 lineup which once again features 4 days of music. The festival, hailed as "a model of well-paced programming...in a four-day schedule as efficient and natural feeling as an expertly built algorithm" by NPR Music while Wired notes, "leave the landscape out of it and Sasquatch! has a lineup to kill for," runs May 25-28 (Memorial Day Weekend) at The Gorge, the internationally acclaimed concert venue carved in the basalt cliffs high above the Columbia River Gorge in Quincy, WA."
The Sasquatch! Music Festival takes place, as usual, at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington over Memorial Day weekend (May 25-28). And this year's lineup is:

Coachella

Coachella which is taking place over the course of two weekends this year (April 13-15 and 20-22) revealed their 2012 lineup. Last week, Azealia Banks was the first artist confirmed, and earlier today they confirmed The Weeknd (maybe he found a band?), and before that, Jimmy Cliff, Breakbot, and Housse De Racket. The reunited Pulp then announced itself. The full lineup also includes headliners The Black Keys, Radiohead, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, not to mention, as predicted, the reunited At the Drive In and the reunited Mazzy Star (!), and Madness and Refused (!) and Jeff Mangum and many, many more that you can see below...

02:10 The Stepkids

05:15 Fidlar

Finally! Here is the lineup to our 100% free not-CMJ day party happening at Public Assembly on Saturday (10/22), one day after our free Friday day party in the same place!

This Saturday show is going to be non-stop action starting right at noon with New Zealand's Street Chant on the main stage (and We Barbarians in the other room). I'm excited for everyone, but the over the top antics of both Peelander-Z (after the dance pop party that is Brooklyn's Friends) and bounce artist Vockah Redu (who will warm up the crowd for Idle Warship) should make for a very memorable afternoon in more ways than one.

In addition to free music, here are some more reasons to stop by Saturday. We will have FREE SNACKS courtesy of popchips and Raw Revolution and FREE DRINKS courtesy of Sailor Jerry and our official CMJ wine partner HobNob Wines. Check out HobNob's Facebook page for free music downloads and go to Sailor Jerry's website to read more about all of their CMJ events.

We'll also have FREE BrooklynVegan t-shirts for the first 25 people in the door (not many of these exist - we sold them for charity at CMJ last year).

As mentioned in our Thursday Day Party announcement, we've also partnered with Spotify who are offering 48 hour free Premium trials (playlist for this party coming soon) and Sony Bloggie (stay tuned for our post-CMJ video series) for all BV CMJ/not-CMJ events including this one.

Thanks to Zach Jaeger (Tonally Dude) for the flyer you see above.

See you Saturday!

Slowdance

After moving their show from upstate to Brooklyn Bowl which was then followed by a 50% reduction in ticket price, Saturday's Daytrotter show is now not happening at all, as the bowling alley venue has cancelled all Saturday and Sunday shows "due to the hurricane. Ticket refunds will be offered." No bowling or food on those days either. Affected artists include JBM, We Are Augustines, Guards, Doug Paisley, Des Ark, Christopher Paul Stelling, The Loom, Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra and (DJ) Talib Kweli.

Daytrotter's Monday show at the Living Room is still on though, and you can head to Brooklyn Bowl tonight (8/26) for a free show by Slowdance. The Dex Romweber Duo and Birds of Avalon show tonight was also cancelled, but that was a coincedence.
