Girl Talk @ Wellmont Theater
Girl Talk completed the first leg of his current tour at Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ Saturday night (2/5) (one night after Lauryn Hill played the same venue). Penguin Prison opened the show, like they did on previous dates. Pictures from that show are in this post.
Now on a slight break, Greg Gillis will launch the second leg of his tour at Terminal 5 in NYC on 2/24. The show is sold out.
Opening all Girl Talk dates from 2/24-3/25 are both Max Tundra and Girl Talk's Illegal Art label-mate Junk Culture, both of whom will first play their own smaller show at Glasslands in Brooklyn on 2/23 with Nite Club and George & Jonathan. Tickets are on sale. All tour dates are listed below.
Junk Culture released "Summer Friends" this week. The full 5-song tracklist is listed below. Download two of the tracks for free above now.
"Oxford Mississippi native Deepak Mantena of creative pop-project Junk Culture developed the sound for his newest release, Summer Friends, from a lifetime collection of sounds he'd captured on a handheld recorder. Drawing on inspiration he found in the vibrant harmonies, psychedelic noises and dance rhythms that saturated his environment, he created alluring melodies using guitar, keyboard, and percussion and topped them off with choruses of his own explosive vocals. Experimenting with recording and sampling the symphony of sounds from his everyday life left him filled with a sense of freedom and a revived faith in the process of making music; the warm euphoric tunes he emerged with reflect a compelling range of influences that include everything from west-coast style pop to hip-hop mash-ups and raw punk-informed electronic dance tunes." [PR]Max Tundra doesn't have a new release, but has been busy in the studio creating one. Meanwhile he is giving away a new track in the form of a Rockford Files theme song remix (grab that above). He has also recently released remixes for Marnie Stern, Abe Vigoda, Chilly Gonzales, Tune-Yards, Kele and others. Listen to those remixes below.

"Ray Davies' U.S tour dates have been cancelled. Ray personally did not want to cancel this tour but was ordered by his doctors not to fly or travel until his medical condition has stabilized to their satisfaction. At this moment, his doctors could not provide a time frame as to when he could travel to the U.S. and advised him to cancel below dates."The press release refers to "his medical condition" but doesn't say what it is. It does go on to say that "Ray Davies would like to thank all his fans for their continued support and asks that everyone respect his privacy so he can concentrate on a swift recovery." The National kicked off the third leg of their North American tour supporting High Violet on Friday night at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ. The band is playing theaters and auditoriums until Mid-October along with two festivals, Austin City Limits on October 10th and the Treasure Island Music Festival in San Francisco on October 17th. Then comes a two-week break before playing 21 gigs across Europe from mid-November through the first week of December. As if that isn't enough travel, the band is playing a string of shows in Australia and New Zealand around New Year's Eve.
Friday night's opening act, Owen Pallett, who recently opened up for the Dirty Projectors at Terminal 5, was accompanied by Thomas Gill for a brief 40 minute set which was comprised mostly of songs off his latest album, Heartland. The duo were able to layer harmonies, Owen's violin, and Thomas's guitar into a mix that sounded as clean and good as the album. After opening for the The National on this leg of their tour, Owen returns to Canada for several shows through the end of October.
The National's set opened with "Runaway", the slow building track from High Violet. They performed it on a barely light stage, and proceeded to run through a 19 song set that featured songs from the band's 5-album catalog. Highlights of the set included a particularly energetic version of "Squalor Victoria" and show closer "Terrible Love". The latter featured lead singer Matt Berninger's only attempt of the evening to wade out into the crowd.

In related news, LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy and Nancy Whang and Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor laid down vocals on the new Shit Robot disc, From the Cradle to the Rave, which is due on Tuesday (9/21) via DFA. Stream the entire LP at XLR8R.

LCD Soundsystem @ T5 in May (more by Andrew Frisicano)
"People get into bands, and just keep going because that's what's in front of them, don't they?" Down the line from New York, sounding world-weary and wistful, LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy is reflecting on his decision - announced before the release of a hugely acclaimed third album, This Is Happening - to break up his band when they complete their current world tour. "It's more fun to just go for it knowing that we're done. And then nothing matters. Then we have nothing to lose." [Guardian]LCD Soundsystem has added another show to their fall/world tour, their first NYC-area gig since the Terminal 5 dates in May. The show is at The Wellmont Theatre on September 23 and tickets go on sale this Friday at noon. No opener has been announced yet but the show is the day before the ten day tour with Sleigh Bells, which is followed by a slot at the Austin City Limits festival and then six dates with Hot Chip.

Wolf Parade @ the 2010 Pitchfork Festival (more by Kate Gardiner)
Seattle Times: What do you mean in "Yulia" with the lyric "The radio sings a patriot song / it's the devil that you know"? Are you talking about government propaganda in mainstream pop music?Wolf Parade will head back out on the road this fall. First Europe and then Russia, and then on November 3rd they kick off a North American tour at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ. Ogre You Asshole opens and tickets go on sale Friday at noon. Handsome Furs are currently in Asia. All dates below...
Dan: Actually that was government propaganda in late-1960s USSR. That song is one of the most topical-fiction songs that I've written. I watched this great documentary on the Soviet space program called "The Red Stuff," and they're interviewing this woman. I forget her actual name, but for the song I changed her name to Yulia. She's talking about how her husband was lost in this failed attempt to land a Soviet space capsule on the moon before the Americans. They overshot their orbit, and are presumably still floating in space. She was listening the radio broadcast, and then it cut out. I guess when mission control found out the capsule was a goner, they started playing patriotic music over the radio, and that was the moment she knew her husband was gone. Amazing documentary, totally worth watching. It's downloadable.

Speaking of Wellmont Theatre, Bowery Presents has issued the following official statement about Wednesday night's postponed Interpol show...
The Wellmont Theater will be closed to repair portions of the plaster ceiling finishes. The owners and leaseholders of the Wellmont are working closely with the Montclair building department and an independent contractor, following an incident last week when it was discovered that repairs were necessary to ensure patron safety. As a result, the Interpol concert scheduled for Wednesday, August 4 has been postponed. The Wellmont looks forward to upcoming shows with Lyle Lovett, Counting Crows, Tears for Fears and many others. For information and updates on concerts, please check the website at www.wellmonttheatre.com.All Primus dates, and a 2nd set of pictures from the Primus/Gogol show at Williamsburg Waterfront show, below...
Deadmau5 & missing piece of ceiling @ Wellmont Theatre (via Baristanet)
Wellmont Theatre is temporarily closed -- and its scheduled show of Interpol Wednesday night [is definitely] canceled -- after a piece of the ceiling fell from the upper balcony during the Deadmau5 last week.Coincedentally, three days after Deadmau5 played Wellmont...
Louis Litvin, a Wellmont partner, confirmed that Robert McLoughlin of the Montclair buildings department had closed the Wellmont following the incident. Litvin added that one concertgoer was taken from the theater in an ambulance, but that the injury appeared to be minor and the victim was able to walk after being struck.
Litvin said that an engineering team with thermal imaging equipment is currently inspecting the entire building, ceiling and walls, and that management will do "whatever we need to do to protect the public."
"Once we do that and Bob McLoughlin is comfortable, the show will go on," Litvin said. The Wellmont hopes that all the repairs are done in time for the Lyle Lovett concert scheduled for August 15." [Baristanet]
...while performing onstage at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., electronic music performer DEADMAU5 (pronounced "dead mouse") collapsed, suffering from exhaustion. Medics at the venue took him directly to hospital where he is now under supervision. And as it says above, Wednesday night's Interpol show is cancelled. Poor Interpol. First Bono. Now the ceiling. Stay tuned for refund/rescheduling info.
DEADMAU5 is sad to inform his fans that on the strict advice of the doctors, he now has no choice but to cancel the next nine shows of his summer tour schedule to allow for his recovery. The dates affected are listed below. Meanwhile, his North American dates for October which include appearances at Austin City Limits, the Treasure Island Music Festival, Voodoo Music Festival and three nights at Roseland Ballroom in New York City are still on course.

Modest Mouse @ Wellmont Theater, July 22, 2010
Due to inclement weather the July 23rd Modest Mouse show at the Williamsburg Waterfront was forced to be rescheduled. The new show date is confirmed for September 14th.Awesome news, especially since those who went to the July 23rd show are getting an extra show in addition to the set by Morning Teleportation and five Modest Mouse songs they already saw (I realize those who traveled far for the show might not agree).
Any patrons unable to attend the rescheduled date should contact Ticketmaster before August 27th at 5pm. Tickets purchased at Ticketmaster outlets and the Nokia Theatre Times Square box office can be exchanged in person for tickets to the rescheduled show. On August 29th Ticketmaster will reissue all tickets purchased online and by phone via the original method of delivery for the rescheduled date.
OSA would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we worked to get the show rescheduled.

OSA raises funds, links community volunteers, and works in partnership with elected officials and agencies to develop new parks, and improve existing parks in Williamsburg/Greenpoint.
The Williamsburg Waterfront is located at North 8th Street & Kent Avenue at the East River State Park in Brooklyn, NY.
One night before the Brooklyn show, the same two bands played a show at Wellmont Theater in NJ. Modest Mouse was able to play a whole set at that one. The 19-song NJ setlist, and more pictures from that show, and all upcoming tour dates, below...
Interpol played live for the first time in a very long time last night in Rochester, tickets are still on sale for their Friday night show in Allentown, they debut their new lineup to NYC on Saturday night, and they just added a proper show at Montclair, NJ's Wellmont Theatre which will take place on August 4th. $32.00 tickets or that one go on sale Friday at noon.
Matt Berninger waves hi to the Sasquatch crowd
In order to the play the main stage, the lead singer of every band is contractually obligated to compliment the scenery: At least it seemed that way.Remember The National's newly added show at NJ's Wellmont Theatre on Septermber 24th? That date is part of what you might call the band's third leg of North American touring in 2010 (they'll get to Europe at least three times this year too). Starting in NJ, the National will be on the road with Owen Pallett for shows across North America into mid-October. (Before that, Owen opens for Dirty Projectors at T5 on September 11th.) European shows are planned after that (which bring the band's schedule into December).
In fact, Damian Kulash of OK Go did it twice, calling the rolling desert vistas carved by the Columbia River "unbelieavable" and "amazing" before two different songs.
The National's Matt Berninger, the gangly embodiment of deep-voiced New York cool, at least waited until the last song to gush briefly about The Gorge Amphitheatre's majesty.
But who could blame them? Tens of thousands of years in the making, The Gorge is, rain or shine, one of the nation's most breathtaking concert venues. [OregonLive]
The National played Sasquatch Music Festival in Seattle over Memorial Day weekend. More pictures from that set and all tour dates (with openers) are below...
The National @ BAM in May (more by Getty Images for AmEx)
"We're used to being a band whispered quietly about in back alleys, so to be near the top of the Billboard chart made us realize we were in a different place now," guitarist Aaron Dessner said from his hotel room in San Diego. [Boston Herald]The National will be playing a show at NJ's Wellmont Theatre on Friday, September 24th. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 4th at noon.
Add that to the band's current tour dates, which already have two NYC summer stops (Radio City on June 16th and Prospect Park). The National are on tour now (this week they play Boston and Philly for two nights each before making their way to Bonnaroo) - in May the band spent a lot of time promoting their new album, High Violet, around NYC, culminating in a BAM Opera House show, which is still streaming online. A "directors' cut" version of their performance of "Bloodbuzz Ohio" from that, which also goes behind the scenes of the official video, is posted below...

But then it all started to slip away, as Ms. Love's abuse of cocaine and prescription pills took a toll. She became a tabloid regular, famous for behavior like flashing her breasts at David Letterman. It was hard to imagine her ever being taken seriously again. "I have lived the worst parts of my life in public," she said earnestly, "and now my band and I have made a relevant record."Hole kicked off the initial four-date US leg of their tour in LA on Thursday (4/22). Coming up, they play two nights at Terminal 5 on April 27th and 28th. Tickets to both NYC shows are still/back on sale at the moment.
"I went all in," she added. "I bet the farm on this record, which is dangerous, but great in a way, because when you do that, you have nowhere else to go. There is no Plan B."
The challenge is to make the quality of the music eclipse Ms. Love's tabloid celebrity, said David Massey, the president of Mercury. The label gave Ms. Love a multi-album deal just four months ago, before the recording was finished. "The decision to sign the band was entirely music driven," he said. "It's now become such a complete, great record that I'm blown away. One thing that impressed me when I got to know Courtney were her lyrics and ideas. Nobody else is doing such raw, truthful music." [NY Times]
Before those, there will be an acoustic in-store performance at the Best Buy Union Square on Monday, April 26th at midnight (aka when you can buy Hole's new album, Nobody's Daughter, which comes out April 27th). Details on that are below.
The band then heads to Europe before returning to the US for more shows this June. One of those will be a Friday, June 25th gig at NJ's Wellmont Theatre. Tickets go on sale at noon.
The picture above and more below are from the group's appearance at Spin day party at SXSW at Stubb's on March 19th. There are also pics of the other bands that played that show - Rogue Wave, Fucked Up, Miike Snow and Sharon Jones. "Holy shit. If I had only one band to choose to see in concert it would be The Flaming Lips. Best concert I've ever been to, no contest. Friendly people, which makes sense: Flaming Lips fans are some of the friendliest people I know.In other words, just your average Flaming Lips show at Wellmont Theater in NJ last night. More pictures, the setlist of video of the band performing a Pink Floyd cover with opener Stardeath and White Dwarfs during the encore (they'll play Dark Side of the Moon in full again at Bonnaroo), below...
Words cannot do this concert justice. The music, the atmosphere, the smoke, the GIANT balloons filled with confetti that would POP in an explosion of rectangular colored shreds of paper, the dense cloud of pot - so thick you couldn't even smell the person next to you sparking up. And oh, the visuals, the fantastical videos they had, drippy gooey egg yolks, and naked dancing ladies, and naked drum-hitting ladies, and naked ladies dancing on the beach, and laughter, and love, and everything all around. I'm still glowing from the show." [Hilary]
Modest Mouse @ MHOW June 2008 (more by Ryan Muir)
Speaking of Wellmont Theatre, Modest Mouse - in addition to their NYC show at Williamsburg Waterfront on July 23rd - will be playing at NJ's Wellmont Theatre on Thursday, July 22nd. Tickets go on sale Friday (4/16) at noon.
In addition, 80s hit-makers like Crowded House, Huey Lewis & the News, and Tears for Fears all have shows coming up at the venue and it was just announced that Lyle Lovett will play there on Sunday, August 15th. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon.
Flaming Lips are at Wellmont Theatre, one of several planned gigs for the band in the area, on April 19th.
Wayne Coyne @ ATP NY 2009 (more by Ryan Muir)
The Flaming Lips have revealed they're in talks with Des McAnuff to turn their hit 2002 album Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots into a theatrical spectacular. The Flaming Lips will be playing in NYC this July with a show at Central Park SummerStage. That's already sold out, but way before that they have that April 19th show at Wellmont Theatre in Monclair, NJ, (just six days from now) which despite being listed as sold out still has tickets available at the moment. Also in April they have a few other shows - outside the NYC-area, but not that far. Lots of road trip opportunities.
Frontman Wayne Coyne tells WENN, "We've talked about doing something with Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots now for about five or six years. They did it with Tommy and Des McAnuff was the director, and he's the one that wants to do Yoshimi.
"We've actually pursued it to a certain extent and I think that where it sits is really just me deciding to dedicate a couple of years of my life to making it.
"It's a strange opportunity but I know we've talked about it since 2003. We would incorporate all the songs and probably write some other music that told a little bit more of a story. I guess my biggest dilemma is there's not really a story with Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots; it's just a series of unconnected songs that sound connected when you listen.
"That being said, I don't think it would be overly impossible to draw some connections and come up with some type of emotional storyline." [WENN]
They play Mid Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie (put on by Vassar College) on Saturday, April 17th - tickets are still on sale. Stardeath & White Dwarfs open both the Vassar show and Wellmont, and The Hood Internet play Vassar too. Between those, Flaming Lips perform in Ithaca (Cornell University's Barton Hall to be exact).
The same month as the Central Park show, Flaming Lips have other New York State/New Jersey gigs: July 4th at Atlantic City House of Blues (tickets), July 22nd at ArtPark in Lewiston, NY, near Buffalo (tickets), and July 23rd on an awesome bill with Black Keys and Morning Benders (together in NYC later in July) at CMAC Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua, NY, south of Rochester (tickets).
All Flaming Lips tour dates and more are below...
Wellmont Theater - 4/3/2010 (DJRichRusso)
"Great Show indeed, definitely couldn't rattle off every song, but heres some highlights:Wilco played another three hour show at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ last night (Saturday, 4/3). Setlist and pictures from the first night, HERE. Saturday night's setlist below...
- The band played a great Outtamind (outtasite) to end the acoustic set, THEN did Outta- Site (outtamind) in the encore as well. Don't think ive ever seen a band do the same song twice in one night, i loved it
- Muzzle of Bees was a dinner winning request, and it ruled!
- Band played A LOT of summerteeth. Can't Stand It, Shot in the Arm, I'm Always in Love, When You Wake Up Feeling Old (acoustic), Summer Teeth, Candyfloss. I might be missing a few
- No Heavy Metal Drummer, No Handshake Drugs, No Late Greats, but ive seen all those enough that i really didn't give a shit tonight
- 2 Big Star covers to finish off the main set: Thank you friends, followed by In the Street
- Dreamer in my Dreams and You and I were some great acoustic set highlights
Overall, its really tough to compare the two shows. I give the slightest edge to the first night, which was a bit more varied and rocking throughout in my opinion. I also knew basically all of the songs Friday night, while i heard a few unfamiliar ones in the main set and the acoustic set tonight. But two great shows for sure!" [A Cherry Ghost]
