Retrovirus, no wave legend Lydia Lunch's project with Weasel Walter (Flying Luttenbachers, Behold... The Arctopus), Bob Bert (Sonic Youth) and Tim Dahl (Child Abuse), have some shows coming up this month and next. They play LA this weekend, two New Zealand shows in August, and NYC's Le Poisson Rouge on August 23. Tickets for LPR are on sale now. All dates are listed below.
In related news, Nicolas Jaar will release a collection from Lydia Lunch's former band Teenage Jesus and the Jerks on his Other People label. It's called Live 1977-1979, and includes recordings from NYC's Max's Kansas City and CBGB and Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern. That follows Other People reissuing Lydia's Conspiracy of Women earlier this year.
Lydia isn't the only legendary no wave musician playing LPR in August. Three days later, Ikue Mori will be there playing a collaborative set with guitar great Marc Ribot. They'll be opening for Earth, for whom it's the first of two NYC stops on their tour. Tickets for that show are still available, and we're also giving away a pair on Facebook.
Ikue also plays Roulette on Saturday (8/1), and has a bunch of upcoming appearances at The Stone. She plays there August 10 with Bruce Ackley, Mike Lockwood and Jen Baker, and twice in September during vocal quartet Mycale's residency. That includes 9/17 with Mycale and 9/20 with Sylvie Courvoisier and Jim Black.
She then plays Jon Rose's October residency on 10/11 with Rose and John Medeski. After that, she plays 8 PM and 10 PM sets on November 18 during Zeena Parkins' residency. The early set is Ikue and Zeena, and the late set has that duo joined by Erik Friedlander and Cyro Baptista. Other artists playing Zeena's residency include Nate Wooley, White Out, Nels Cline, Okkyung Lee, and more. Full schedule here.
Lastly (for now), Ikue plays the 12/18 date of Chuck Bettis' residency with Bettis and Sylvie Courvoisier. We mentioned earlier today that Chuck's residency also includes Mick Barr, who has his own residency at the venue in August. That one includes an 8/19 show with Retrovirus member Tim Dahl.

Thurston Moore on the 'Station to Station' tour (more by Lukas Hodge)
As discussed, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore is playing two New Year's Eve shows at The Stone, an early one with John Zorn, and a late one with Mike Watt. Since we last spoke, we realized those shows are actually part of Thurston's residency at the venue, which kicks off on NYE and continues through January 5. He's curating for the week, and also performing with different collaborators each night.
Most notably, the residency has him performing with Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley for two shows on 1/3, with Chelsea Light Moving drummer John Moloney for two shows on 1/4, and with another CLM member, Samara Lubelski, on 1/2. Probably don't expect Sonic Youth or Chelsea Light Moving songs though. He'll also be performing with NYC experimental duo White Out (who have releases on Thurston's Ecstatic Peace label) on the final night (1/5). The full schedule and an updated list of Chelsea Light Moving tour dates are below.
Meanwhile, as we speak, avant guitarist/banjoist Eugene Chadbourne's residency at the venue is underway. It kicked off this past Tuesday (10/29) and included his Halloween show at the venue last night (10/31). It continues with Eugene playing as a duo with Tatsuya Nakatani tonight (11/1), solo on Saturday (11/2), and as part of a 5-piece on Sunday (11/3).
Most of the other Nov/Dec curators are all notable jazz musicians and improvisers. One that's especially exciting to us is Ikue Mori, drummer of seminal no wave band DNA, 1/3 of Death Ambient (with Fred Frith and Kato Hideki), and a frequent collaborator of John Zorn, Mike Patton, various members of Sonic Youth, and more. She curates/performs at The Stone from December 17-22 and collaborators for the week include Zeena Parkins, Fred Frith, Sylvie Courvoisier, John Zorn and more, plus a "SPECIAL SURPRISE BAND" TBA on 12/20. Full schedule for her residency below.
In related news, Ikue Mori plays a previously discussed special Body/Head trio set with B/H members Kim Gordon and Bill Nace at the Kim Gordon benefit at Issue Project Room.
Then, from December 25-29 at The Stone, it's the annual John Zorn end of the year improv week, leading up to Thurston Moore's NYE shows. Zorn will be joined by multiple other improvisers throughout the week, including Thurston Moore, Ikue Mori, Sylvie Courvoisier, Erik Friedlander, Okkyung Lee, and many more. Full schedule below.

Pop weirdo Gary War will release his new album, Jared's Lot, on July 24 via Spectrum Pools. That's the cover art above. Two tracks from that album -- "Muscle Dysmorphia" and "Superlifer" -- can be streamed below, along with seven-and-a-half minute album preview stream. If you like druggy synth pop and robot alien vocals, give those a listen.
Gary War will be supporting the new album with a run of dates this August, but just before that, he'll play a record release show in NYC at Le Poisson Rouge on July 30 with White Out with Hahn Rowe and No Fun Acid. Tickets for the NYC show are on sale now.
All dates are listed below, along with those streams...
The second-annual Spy Music Festival happens June 29th through July 15th, featuring "46 sets of music at 7 venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn." That's a big expansion from last year when it took place on two nights at Shea Stadium and Zebulon. This year's fest, run by the folks at Northern Spy Records, will happen at Union Pool, the Issue Project Room, The Stone, Vaudeville Park, 285 Kent, Death by Audio and Roulette. Amongst the artists performing are Rhys Chatham, Matthew Shipp, Dustin Wong, Arthur Doyle, Eugene Chadbourne, PG Six, Guardian Alien and Magik Markers.
The full Spy Music Festival schedule -- bands, venues, prices -- is below. There's no all-inclusive festival pass, but tickets to all the shows are available here. And the fest organizers have also made a sampler featuring the artists performing this year and you can stream that below as well.

Thurston Moore has been responsible for choosing the lineups at The Stone since April 16th. Upcoming Thurston-curated shows include U.S. Girls (tonight, 4/21), "Kim Gordon with Guest" on 4/23 which is right before a Talk Normal performance on the same day, and Nancy Garcia on 4/29. Thurston's reign ends on 4/30. Check the Stone's site for the whole calendar.
Thurston, who recently played a Japan benefit, has his own shows coming up at Music Hall of Williamsburg, in Northampton, at the Pitchfork Festival, and as part of his White Out project on a bill with Metal Mountains and Bardo Pond at Le Poisson Rouge on June 18th.
For more Sonic Youth, Steve Shelley also has shows coming up, both as part of Disappears and Spectre Folk.
One day after they play the Stone, Talk Normal share a bill with Grass Widow (like they did when they opened for Sonic Youth in Prospect Park), Broken Water and Tara Jane O'Neil at Death By Audio.

Thurston w/ Sonic Youth @ MHOW in November (more by Lori Baily)
Thurston Moore will join White Out (noisemaking duo Lin Culbertson and Tom Surgal) for what, according to their website, is the only the group's third show this year. It happens Friday, December 18th at (Le) Poisson Rouge, and headlining will be Philly psych-rock band Bardo Pond (both acts are on Thurston's Ecstatic Peace label). Tickets are still on sale.
White Out put out two records this year, both recordings of live shows. Senso, captured at the now-defunct downtown club Tonic on December 18, 2004, and featuring Thurston Moore and Jim O'Rourke, came out in September on Ecstatic Peace. The other record, Live at No Fun LP, has guests Spencer Yeh and Carlos Giffoni. It came out on No Fun Productions and was recorded at No Fun Fest 2008 (...both run by Giffoni).
Bardo Pond's only other NYC show this year was at No Fun Fest 2009. They played the same night as Sonic Youth. Their most recent release, peri, is, like batholith before it, a "collection of tracks that were close to the band's heart but for various reasons had never been released."
White Out videos and a show flyer are below...
