Woods at Storm King Art Center in May (more by Jessica Amaya)
Woods

Woods will release their new album, Bend Beyond, on September 18 via the band's own Woodsist Records. You can stream two of its tracks, "Cali in a Cup" and "Size Meets the Sound," along with the cover art and tracklist, below.

Woods, whose touring lineup now includes drummer Aaron Neveu of Mmoss (who Woods recently toured with), will be supporting the new album with a tour. They in Europe as we speak and upon returning home later this month, they'll go on a run with The Walkmen. It seems likely that more dates will be announced, because after that there are only a few more shows currently scheduled, including a NYC show, which happens on November 3 at Music Hall of Williamsburg with fellow Brooklyn band Widowspeak (who they shared a bill with in May) and Purling Hiss. Tickets for that show go on sale Tuesday (9/4) at noon. All currently known Woods dates are listed below.

You won't have to wait that long to catch Widowspeak in their hometown of Brooklyn though. They play Brooklyn Bowl on September 27 with Vensaire and Hard Bop. That show is free with RSVP or $5 at the door.

All lists of dates, song streams cover art and tracklist are below.

Beach Day at Knitting Factory, June 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Beach Day

Beach Day are staying busy on the road this year, having already visited NYC a couple times, and are preparing for another East Coast tour, that will bring them here for two shows next month: September 14 at Pianos and September 16 at Cameo. Tickets to the Cameo show are on sale now.

The Cameo show is with Blonds, who, as mentioned, will play the Rock Shop even sooner on August 28. That show, presented by Brooklyn Brewery, is the "Brooklyn, Sweden Sendoff" with Telepathe, So-So Glos and Teen Commandments all of whom will play the Brooklyn, Sweden Festival in Stockholm and Malmö over Labor Day Weekend (8/31 - 9/1). Blonde Redhead, The Hold Steady, Cults, Crystal Stilts, Phosphorescent, Au Revoir Simone, Dum Dum Girls, DIIV, Twin Sister, Widowspeak, Maluca, Prince Rama, Caveman, and DJs Finger on the Pulse will also be there, so if you're wondering why Williamsburg seems empty that weekend, that's why.

Tickets to the send-off party at The Rock Shop are on sale now: it's $15 bucks but includes free Brooklyn Brewery beer from 7:30 - 9:30 PM.

A flyer for the Brooklyn, Sweden Sendoff party, plus Beach Day and Blonds tour dates, are below.

Husky from Australia / Husky from Mexico
Husky

Melbourne, Australia's indie folk quartet Husky just released their debut album, Forever So, this week on Sub Pop. (The first AU band on the label, for what it's worth.) With a love of The Hollies, CSNY and America (the band, not the country, though I'm sure they love us too) the band make delicately swooning pop that's a cut above some of the other bands working in a similar idiom. You can download two tracks from the album at the top of this post and the whole thing is streaming below via a Spotify widget, along with a video for "History's Door).

Husky are coming over for a North American tour in August with two NYC stops: a free Summerstage on 8/18 as part of Australia Day which also features Sheppard, High Highs, George Byrne, Maya Jupiter, Dj Ashley Feraude and Kid Zoom; and then a show at Joe's Pub on 8/21 to which tickets are on sale. All Husky tour dates are listed below.

Just so no one is confused (or perhaps confusing you more), there is also a Husky from Monterey, Mexico who are visting NYC as we speak and play 285 Kent on Friday (7/13) with Widowspeak, Total Slacker and Parquet Courts, and XPO 929 on Saturday (7/14) with Gradients, Island Twins and Parquet Courts again. They also play Cake Shop on July 24. While definitely on the rock side, they are also quite pop-oriented and you could probably convince yourself, if you didn't know better, that this Husky's Weekend Lovers EP (which you can stream via a Spotify widget below as well) was the same band as the one signed to Sub Pop. You can download their single "Miami" at the top of this post and watch the video below.

All tour dates for both Husky and Husky, plus streams and videos, are below.

Dum Dum Girls at Sasquatch 2012 (more by Chris Graham)
Dum Dum Girls

House of Vans, who already hosted their first House Party of the summer on June 20 with The Rapture and Tanlines, and has their next one scheduled for July 12 with H2O, 7 Seconds, and more, will also throw a "Classic Summer Party" on July 21. Dum Dum Girls and Widowspeak will play the Brooklyn space that day with a DJ set from Finger on the Pulse and live video installation from Radical Friend and Discipline. RSVP for that show is now open.

This Classic Summer Party falls five days before the third Vans House Party (7/26), which along with 8/2, 8/16, and 8/29, has still yet to announce their lineups.

Last month, Dum Dum Girls wrote a theme song for an issue of Rookie Mag. You can grab an MP3 of that track above, and check out a list of all DDG's dates below...

Eternal Summers
Eternal Summers

So as you may have heard, I think we posted about it once, the Northside Festival kicks off today, Thursday (6/14), all over Williamsburg and Greenpoint which means slightly more music and definitely more Heineken in the neighborhood than normal. You can still buy festival badges that will get you into get you into all shows, theoretically, but depends on the venue and capacity. Many shows have advance tickets, like tonight's GZA's shows (early and late, both sold out) at MHoW or the Cold Cave at Europa (almost sold out I hear) to name two, or you can try your luck buying at the door.  Basically, if you are relying on buying at the door or using your badge, get there early. Small places like Cameo reach badge capacity early.

Tonight there's the BBG/BV Presents showcase at St. Vitus with Dragged into Sunlight, The Year is One, and Make. Also tonight, though not part of Northside, is the BBG presented show at Acheron with Secretarian Violence, The Love Below, Poison Planet, and Pharaoh which means BBG will be one tired dude tomorrow (and Evillive will be late posting).

I also recommend the Kanine Records show tonight at Knit, as Virginia's Eternal Summers have made one of my favorite albums of 2012 so far, Correct Behavior, which isn't out till next month but I know for a fact will be sold at the merch table tonight. (Check out their new video for "Wonder" below.) They're great live too. Also on the bill: Class Actress, Bleeding Rainbow (now a rocking quartet), Zambri, the controversially-named (but pretty good) Beach Day, and Air Waves. Something else to consider that I just discovered: Knitting Factory's has a no-fee ATM.

Also tonight: the Chaos in Tejas/FFF showcase at Warsaw with Ceremony, Citizens Arrest, Royal Headache, and Magrudergrind. I caught Australia's Royal Headache's super-packed, sweaty show at Cake Shop last night and all I can say is wow. They are the real deal and singer Shogun belted it out, hit every note and is, I'm pretty sure, the best singing I've ever heard at Cake Shop and probably ever will? I mean usually the vocals are so low there but his were booming out. If you have a badge and a free spot in your night, try to make it there -- Royal Headache are on at 9PM.

There's also the Other Music Recording Co. showcase at Union Pool who just revealed that the "???" headliner tonight is Widowspeak who will play alongside OMRC artists as Ex Cops and Nude Beach both of which are favorites here at the BVHQ plus The Everymen who I've been meaning to check out. (This might be my first stop of the night.) Flyer for the show is below.

I also want to see Daughn Gibson at Cameo (again go early if you want in to this one); Kool Keith at Brooklyn Bowl would be, uh, cool... there's a lot to do tonight and you can see the full Northside Schedule here.

Other Music and Kanine Records flyers and Eternal Summers video are below.

DOWNLOAD: Twin Sister - Kimi in a Rice Field (Spanish Prisoners remix) (MP3)

Spanish Prisoners

Spanish Prisoners' most recent album, Gold Fools, is only about eight months old but the Brooklyn band have a new cassette-only release, Prior Art, which will be out June 26 and "contains reworkings of songs by Clams Casino and Twin Sister, as well as remixes by shape shifters Sun Glitters and Rimar, mixed with gooey ambient stretches and swirling electronic interludes."

The Spanish Prisoners remix of Twin Sister's "Kimi in a Rice Field" -- which you can download at the top of this post -- gives the song a distinct '80s R&B thump while keeping Andrea Estella's vocals floating atop.

Spanish Prisoners have a couple notable shows coming up. They play Bowery Ballroom on Friday (6/1) opening for Freelance Whales (sold out), and will then play Knitting Factory on June 9 with 2:54 and Widowspeak (tickets are still available). The band has a few more additional dates as well and they're all listed below along with the cover art and tracklist to Prior Art.

Woods at Austin Psych Fest 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)
Woods

Woods kicked off a tour with Mmoss last month surrounding Austin Psych Fest which included a NYC-area show at Maxwell's on 4/20 (how was that?). The tour is wrapping up this weekend with a Philly show last night (5/4), a NYC show tonight (5/5) at 285 Kent with Crystal Stilts, and a show at Storm King Art Center on Sunday with Widowspeak (who kick off a tour with 2:54 in June).

For Crystal Stilts, tonight's show is their only non-festival date, though they've been playing more and more lately. As far as festivals, they're on the lineup of this year's Capitol Hill Block Party.

All dates and a video of Woods at Austin Psych Fest below...

Widowspeak @ Death By Audio - March 24, 2012
Widowspeak

Brooklyn DIY venue Death By Audio is celebrating five years, and Saturday night's special bill included Eternal Summers, Bleeding Rainbow, Shark?, and a headlining set by Widowspeak (who just played one of our parties in Austin). DBA crowd for JEFF the Brotherhood in Feb (more by Andrew St. Clair)
Jeff the Brotherhood

South Williamsburg DIY space Death by Audio will be five years old on March 31 and are throwing a birthday party for themselves featuring Neckbeard Telecaster, Grooms, Les Savvy Fav's Tim Harrington doing something solo, and Free Paint (Deerhoof's Greg Saunier and Flying's Sara Magenheimer). And maybe some special guests? Who can say?

While the 31st is the official anniversary party, all of March has been loaded with semi-official ones. Saturday (3/24) is a stacked bill, with Widowspeak, Eternal Summers, Bleeding Rainbow and Shark?. I actually saw the first three last week in Austin at various SXSW shows (like our Hotel Vegan day party on Friday 3/16) and all were in fine form.

There's also Sweden's Echodeck on Sunday (3/25),  reunited '80s Aussie band Feedtime on March 29, and  Little Lungs (one-off reunion gig) with Nouns (Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females, who did part of the DBA stage mural, btw) on March 30.

While their were shows at what they called the Sugar Factory earlier (I remember seeing Dirty on Purpose and Vaz there during CMJ 2005), March 31 was the first show under the name Death by Audio (part of the space which Oliver Ackerman had been using since 2002 for his effects pedals company). I've seen so many memorable shows there (JEFF the Brotherhood, Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, METZ to name just a few) over the last five years. Here's to many more.

Widowspeak @ Hotel Vegan
BV SXSW Free Day Party @ Hotel Vegan on 3/16/2012

Widowspeak are back from a trip that brought them to Mexico for Festival NRML and to Austin for SXSW where they played they played Hotel Vegan. Bill Pearis wrote:

Widowspeak were the first of three bands who played our party Friday that are on Captured Tracks. (DIVE and Craft Spells would be the others.) Molly Hamilton gets compared to Hope Sandoval a lot, and they both do have that sultry breathy vocal quality but Mazzy Starr never got up enough speed for song like Widowspeak's "Fir Coat."
Another set of pictures from their set at our show is in this post.

Bleeding Rainbow didn't play any of our SXSW parties, but Bill did catch them in Austin the same day he saw Widowspeak, and wrote:

Bleeding Rainbow were on their last couple songs when I got to the Iron Bear. A year ago, the Philadelphia band were a duo (still with the name Reading Rainbow) but added a member last fall and then changed their name. Now... they're a four-piece and sounded fierce!
Catch Widowspeak AND Bleeding Rainbow, and Eternal Summers, and Shark? for a date in Brooklyn at Death By Audio Saturday (3/23). $7 gets you in the door.

Bleeding Rainbow have on other show on their upcoming calendar, on March 30th at Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia supporting Cloud Nothings. Cloud Nothings play two NYC shows next week with A Classic Education, at Mercury Lounge and Glasslands (both are sold out).

NYCTaper was on hand for Widowspeak's last NYC show earlier this month, and has the audio from the show to prove it.

Check out some Widowspeak video/interviews from during SXSW/Festival NRML, more pictures from Hotle Vegan, and updated Cloud Nothings dates below....

It was a very good day. As Bill wrote, "At one point, one group of people were holding him up while another group were holding his organ (hello!) while he played it... and then he soon climbed on top of it. There were costume changes, group singalongs, question and answer sessions and a lot of really fun garage punk. One of my Top 5 sets of SXSW 2012."

Widowspeak @ Public Assembly for a BV-CMJ party in October 2011
Widowspeak

Back before they played one of our holiday parties in December, Widowspeak graced the stage of our Friday CMJ day party at Public Assembly (that Hospitality and Xeno & Oaklander also played). Here are some long lost pictures from that Brooklyn show.

Catch Widowspeak tonight (3/3), when they headline Glasslands Gallery in Williamsburg with support from Mac DeMarco and Quilt. Tickets are still available.

Widospeak also recently played "a two-song semi-acoustic session in Copenhagen's meat-packing district (one outdoor on some wholesale shopping cars, one indoor in their candlelit backstage room)." Check out both videos from that, along with more BV-CMJ pictures, below...

Mac Demarco
Mac Demarco

It begins. Bands from all over the world -- England! Canada! Sweden! New Zealand! Virginia! -- descend on New York as they beat a path to Austin for this year's SXSW. Which is good for those who aren't going, as well as folks who are but want to see bands play longer than 25 minutes and aren't strung out on a four-day diet of free breakfast tacos, Vitamin Water and Amstel Light. There's lots more going on than what is covered below, but it's what I'm interested in over the next few days.

New Captured Tracks signee Mac DeMarco is in town from Vancouver to play a couple shows. He plays an all-C/T bill tonight (3/2) at Music Hall of Williamsburg with DIVE, Hoop Dreams and headliners Beach Fossils (sold out), and then Glasslands tomorrow (3/3) with  headliners Widowspeak and  Quilt.

Demarco, who used to record under the name Makeout Videotapes, has a smoky baritone that is part Chris Isaak and part Tindersticks. His music owes a little to Isaak as well, with an early '60s vibe (Ricky Nelson, Gene Vincent) by way of '80s neon, all on a four-track budget. You can check debut "Baby's Wearin Blue Jeans" from his debut, Rock n' Roll Hotel (out 3/20) at the top of this post, which is indicative of what Demarco is all about. You can also watch the video for "Only You" which is kind of NSFW. Dude's a provocateur.

Hoop Dreams
Hoop Dreams

Tonight's MHoW show is the first NYC show we've had from Blacksburg, VA's Hoop Dreams in a long while. They were good when I saw them at Glasslands last year and have the potential to be breakouts for the label if they ever get around to releasing another record (only a single so far). Live, they're more in the Arcade Fire/Editors anthemic style than the single might suggest. It will also be a good opportunity to hear new music from Beach Fossils who are busy at work on their second LP.

And of course, DIVE, who are probably one of the more exciting live bands in Brooklyn right now and are a definite SXSW must-see if you don't live here and have the opportunity to catch them twice a week like we currently do. (They're also touring with Frankie Rose in April.) The show is sold out tonight, but I'd be shocked if there weren't tickets at the door at least when the box office opens.

TOPS
TOPS

Montreal band TOPS are playing 285 Kent tomorrow night as part of a killer bill that includes Blood Orange, Phone Tag and  Caged Animals. The four-piece is comprised of most (if not all) of MTL's Silly Kissers who played here a few times over the last few years and were a little on the precious side (they sometimes wore mime makeup). TOPS, however, are more in the Ariel Pink/Puro Instict brand of minimal keyboard pop. Their debut, Tender Opposites, came out this week on Artibus Records, which is also home to Grimes (in Canada). You can download "Turn Your Love Around" at the top of this post and stream the whole thing (and watch the further down.

As you may have read, 285 headliners Caged Animals will open the Official BrooklynVegan SXSW showcase on March 14 at Bar 69 which also includes Titus Andronicus, Screaming Females, 2:54, The Young and one more TBA. If you haven't heard their tuneful, charming debut Eat Their Own yet, it's still streamable at their BandCamp. And they're terrific live.

So is Blood Orange, despite it just being Dev Hynes, his guitar and a laptop. I saw him last weekend at Glasslands where he spent as much time in the crowd as he did on stage. I do wish he'd get a band, but the one-man Blood Orange is a lot of fun. I haven't seen Phone Tag in a while, but I dig their brand of '80s synthpop.

Korallreven
Koralreven

Sunday night (3/4) at Bowery Ballroom is the NYC debut of Swedish duo Korallreven, one half of which is The Radio Dept.'s Daniel Tjäder. I like their debut album a lot, all lush, synth-driven dream pop but, like a lot of music like this, I wonder how they're going to make it an interesting concert experience. I envision two guys behind laptops and keyboards bobbing their heads and singing, with some projections and hopefully smoke machines.  Maybe they could move the downstairs couches to the main room? Maybe I'm wrong. We'll see. I'm sure it will sound great in any case.  If you haven't heard them yet, you can download "Sa Sa Samoa" in regular and remixed form at the top of this post and watch the video at the bottom of this post. Also playing: Lemonade and Young Magic.

Bachelorette
Bachelorette

Also playing Sunday night, at Cameo, is Bachelorette -- aka New Zealander Annabel Alpers who I think lives here now. Buoyed by Alpers delicate, breathy voice, Bachelorette make ethereal synthpop not miles away from The Magnetic Fields, with whom she's going on tour for seven shows. (All dates at the bottom of this post.) I liked it better when she had a band, but the loop pedal incarnation is pretty lovely too. You can check out a couple videos below or stream her most recent album on Spotify.

And looking into early next week, San Francisco's Young Prisms and Austin's Boy Friend are at Glasslands on Monday (3/5). Young Prisms new album, In Between, is out March 27 on Kanine and is a real step forward for the band. Their still mining first-wave shoegaze, but the songs are much stronger this time out with a couple that go for jangly Velocity Girl style pop. They will be very loud I guarantee you. Boy Friend will make a nice opener, with their hazy, 4-AD miasma vibe. You can download MP3s from both bands at the top of this post. Also playing, seemingly from another show, are Alex Bleeker & the Freaks and Tanks Amigo.

That's the big stuff for the next four days. But wait, there's more. Day-by-day picks of things not covered above:

FRIDAY, MARCH 2

Like Friendly Fires and Foals? Check out Toronto's Young Empires are at Glasslands, with Saint Motel, Fan-Tan, and Transmission NYC (DJ set).

Expect a wild evening at Death by Audio with "original line-up" Tyvek, plus Habibi, Feelings and the Numerators. Stick-in-the-muds, go see something else!

Boston's pop veterans The Figgs play Littlefield. The band's new double album, The Day Gravity Stopped, is out sometime soon.
