Mavis Staples @ Beale Street Music Fest
Mavis has other dates coming up this year, including a free Celebrate! Brooklyn show on June 14 at Prospect Park with Cody Chesnutt. Then the next day (6/15) she heads a bit north for the Clearwater Festival in Croton, NY, which she plays along with Antibalas, Judy Collins, Hot Tuna, Nicole Atkins, Sharon Jones, and more. Tickets for that festival are still available.
Mavis is also working on a new album, One True Vine, which is due out on June 25 via Anti-, and one again being produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco. You can listen to the track "I Like The Things About Me" from that album below (via Complex).
Mavis isn't the only living legend Jeff Tweedy is hanging with this year. As mentioned, Wilco is touring as a support act for Bob Dylan, and that tour hits the NYC-area for a few shows in July (some with My Morning Jacket, one with Beck).
All upcoming Mavis Staples dates are listed, along with the song stream and more pictures and video from Beale St., below...
I'll let the video and press release below. do the talking, but keep your eye out for limited edition Sea Salt-flavored Mast Brothers chocolate bars while doing your shopping at the Park Slope Food Co-op this weekend!
Wilco @ Prospect Park 2012 (more by Dana [distortion] Yavin)
As mentioned a couple times, the AmericanaramA tour with Bob Dylan and Wilco is coming to the NY area this summer with five shows, including Nikon at Jones Beach on July 27 with opener Beck. The other four area shows have My Morning Jacket as opener and are July 19 The Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT, July 21 at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga, NY, July 26 at Pier A Park in Hoboken, NJ, and July 28 at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ.
Tickets to four of these shows go on presale today (4/30) at 10 AM. (Jones Beach and Sartoga PAC are here; Harbor Yard are here; Pier A Park are here; Susquehanna Bank Center are already on sale.) For these and all presales happening today, the password is ""TENACIOUS."
Beck at Outside Lands 2012 (more by Amoreena Lucero)
We just mentioned that Beck is going on a solo acoustic tour this Summer which hits NYC on August 4 at Prospect Park (tickets go on sale 5/10). But what we didn't realize at the time is that Beck was also added to the Jones Beach (7/27) stop on Bob Dylan's tour. That's one of three NYC-area dates on that tour, and it's the show that My Morning Jacket isn't playing. Wilco and Ryan Bingham are both on it though. Tickets for the Jones Beach show go on sale Saturday (5/4) at 10 AM with a bobdylan.com presale starting Tuesday (4/30) at 10 AM and a Citi Cardmember presale starting Thursday (5/2) at 10 AM.
Updated Beck dates are listed below...
Jim James of MMJ at MHOW in February (more by PSquared Photography)
As mentioned, Bob Dylan is going on a big tour this year for which he's taking out Wilco and My Morning Jacket for support. That tour hits the NYC area on July 17 The Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT, July 26 at Pier A Park in Hoboken, NJ, July 27 at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, NY, and July 28 at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ. Since first posting that tour, we've learned that My Morning Jacket will not be on the Jones Beach show, but they will play all three other NYC-area dates.
UPDATE: Beck is playing the Jones Beach show instead of MMJ.
Tickets for the Jones Beach, Pier A, and Ballpark at Harbor Yard shows go on general sale Saturday, May 4 at 10 AM with Citi Cardmember presales starting Thursday, May 2 at 10 AM. Tickets for the Susquehanna Bank Center show are on bobdylan.com presale now (password: "TENACIOUS"), a Citi Cardmember presale starts today (4/25) at 10 AM and general sale starts Saturday (4/27) at 10 AM.
All dates are listed below...
Bob Dylan, who is currently on tour with Dawes, just announced his AmericanaramA: Festival of Music tour, which he'll be going on this summer. And he's tapped some pretty incredible support to go along with him: Wilco and My Morning Jacket. That tour hits the NYC area on July 19 The Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT, July 26 at Pier A Park in Hoboken, NJ, July 27 at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, NY, and July 28 at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ. Ryan Bingham is also on all three of those dates and several others as well, and Richard Thompson is supporting on some of the other shows, but none in the NYC area. A ticket presale begins on Bob Dylan's site this Wednesday (4/24). Stay tuned for more ticket info. All dates are listed below.
UPDATE: My Morning Jacket are not playing the Jones Beach show, but they will be on the other three NYC-area dates.
As mentioned, My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James is also on his own tour that hits NYC for a sold out show on April 29 at Webster Hall with Cold Specks and for a Celebrate Brooklyn! show at Prospect Park on June 18, where he'll be playing a collaborative set with The Roots. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
All Bob Dylan dates are listed, along with a video of him playing "Tangled Up In Blue" with Mark Knopfler at their 2012 Barclays Center show and the tour flyer, below...

For those counting at home, Dana (distortion) Yavin, Amanda Hatfield, David Andrako and Fred Pessaro // BBG have all dropped of their favorite photos that they took in 2012, and now comes a set from another long-time contributor, Dominick Mastrangelo. We'll let him take it from here...
I'm pretty sure everybody who photographs for this site has a list of bands they want to shoot before they hang up their camera or move on to something other than music. I'm no different and 2012 was the year I was able to cross a handful of those bands off my list. All were personal favorites from before I ever picked up a camera; some I had seen a bunch, some I hadn't seen in years and some I had never seen. To have photographed The Afghan Whigs twice, Sigur Rós twice, as well as Wilco, the reunited Ben Folds Five and The Old 97's (a band I saw in countless sweaty venues in my thirteen years in North Texas) over the span of six months, well, I consider myself very fortunate.
Also, Canada was very good to me. I covered Osheaga in August then returned a month later to cover POP Montreal for the second time. The following morning I was on a train to Toronto to cover the Polaris Prize gala. Nearly half of the photos below were taken north of the border and only a desire to not turn this into an all-Canada post kept me from including more.
Of the twelve I've selected, the above shot of Jonsi, the lead-singer of Icelandic band Sigur Rós, taken in Philadelphia at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts is probably my favorite. It was the band's first show in four years, the first time I was getting to photograph one of their shows and my first time seeing them since the last North American show of their Takk tour in February of 2006.
More of my favorite shots from 2012 are below.
Wilco's Solid Sound Festival, will return to MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA, where it's been in previous years, from June 21 - 23. Wilco curates the festival and the lineup for 2013 is TBA, but Early Worm 3-day passes are available now. Single day tickets will become available in early 2013.
In addition to music, the festival will feature comedy chosen by returning guest, John Hodgman. More info on directions and transportation is available at the festival's site. Trailer video below.
Low in the studio with Jeff Tweedy
Long-running indie trio Low will release their 10th album The Invisible Way, on March 19, 2013 which will mark the band's 20th year together. The record was produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, and Low's Alan Sparhawk tells how this came to be:
While driving though Chicago, on tour, we stopped finally to visit Wilco at their studio, The Loft. They had invited us to come check it out several times over the years, but this would finally be the day. It's a great place--a sea of instruments in a relaxed, open working environment. It's cool, but what really converted us was hearing the new Mavis Staples tracks they were working on: big, simple, raw, and intimate. Plans were made then and there. You can watch a video trailer for the album below. While we wait for the new album, Low have released a six-song live EP titled Plays Nice Places which was recorded at various historic theaters on the bands' April 2012 tour supporting Death Cab for Cutie. Ben Gibbard features on the EP's version of "Words" and you can download the whole thing for free (well, you have to give up your email address) below via a widget. No North American tour dates have been announced yet but there are 2013 European dates which are listed below.
We have worked with many of the great engineer/producers. Jeff Tweedy has been on our side of the microphone for over 25 years, however with engineer (and fellow Grammy winner) Tom Schick, he has of late become a formidable and eclectic producer. He spoke a language we understood, but then took us effortlessly into the mystery.
We've made many records, and you know our M.O.: slow, quiet, sometimes melancholy, and, we hope, sometimes pretty...
How is this different from any other Low record?
- Mimi sings lead on five of the eleven songs (she usually only does one or two, despite being a fan favorite).
- Piano, lots of piano... and an acoustic guitar.
- Songs about intimacy, the drug war, the class war, plain old war war, archeology, and love.
Thank you for your time again and please enjoy what we made. I think it's beautiful.

Arriving on the mid-'70s London scene as a rough'n'ready product of the pub-rock era -- an R&B- loving Nick Lowe with a sharper, more ambitious pen, as it were -- Parker predated Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson, both of whom would second his illustration that the singer/songwriter idiom could be recharged, giving intelligent rock fans an excitable and energetic alternative to (slightly) older guardsmen like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Randy Newman and Van Morrison. - [Trouser Press]Last year, pub rock survivor Graham Parker reunited with his old band, The Rumour, to make Three Chords Good, their first album together in 31 years. You can stream the album below via Spotify.
Graham and the Rumour are currently touring the record in America and will be playing the previously mentioned NYC show at Concert Hall at the NY Society for Ethical Culture on Saturday (12/1, tickets) with openers The Figgs, and then The Paramount Theatre in Long Island on Sunday (12/2, tickets) which is a co-headling show with Ian Hunter. All tour dates are below.
Parker's had a long career, and had college radio hits with his 1988 album The Mona Lisa's Sister and has kept on going since. He may be about to get another moment in the spotlight as fan Judd Apatow tapped Parker to not only contribute songs to his new film, This Is 40, but also appear in the film. The comedy, a sideways sequel to Knocked Up (about Paul Rudd's character from that film) will be out in theaters December 21. The soundtrack was produced by Jon Brion and also features Norah Jones, Fiona Apple, Lindsay Buckingham, Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Paul Simon, Wilco, Loudon Wainwright and more. Tracklist is below, as is the trailer for the film.
A list of tour dates, album stream, videos, and the This Is 40 trailer and soundtrack tracklist, below...

Night Two was more of a perfect summer night, the setlist leaning more on acoustic, sensitive tracks songs with fewer peaks. Still, fans who returned were rewarded with plenty of great moments; a fully animated Tweedy howled "Hummingbird" with no instrument, taking his brimmed hat off for emphasis, and the band blazed through the funked-out distorted boogie of "I'm the Man Who Loves You," an angry, pummelling "Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway" and the irresistible garage jangle of 1995's "I Must Be High." During the encore, the band nailed a mindblowing, shattering "Via Chicago" as stage lights flashed furiously. Watching the crowd sing along to the scorned Summerteeth ballad made it clear how far Tweedy has come since he wrote it. In the Nineties, he went through ever-changing Wilco lineups and struggled through addiction, depression and a panic disorder. Now, Tweedy seems far more content; he's spoken in interviews about becoming addicted to running, and he just started a band with his teenage sons called the Raccoonists. And with an ace solid lineup, Wilco are a more finely tuned live machine than they ever have been. "Oh my God, the big rock & roll clap thing!" Tweedy said as the crowd participated during "Monday." "I'm gonna cry!" After more hand-clapping and finger-snapping during "Kingpin," Tweedy smirked. "Thank you for indulging my rock & roll fantasies," he said." [Rolling Stone]For the second night in a row, Wilco played Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park (7/24), this time with much more ideal weather and a nearly 30-song set. (Setlist is below.) Lee Ranaldo opened the show with (former?) Sonic Youth bandmate Steve Shelley on drums. More pictures from Tuesday night's show are below and you can see rainy pics from Monday here.
Wilco go indoors tonight (7/25) for a show at Terminal 5.

Wilco at Prospect Park - 7/23/12
Wilco brought their tour, three NYC shows included, to Prospect Park last night (7/23). It was their first of two at the outdoor Celebrate Brooklyn venue and with their first of two Lees (Lee Fields and the Expressions opened last night, Lee Ranaldo Band opens tonight).
It was pouring rain and there were a few moments of big lightning above and behind the stage, but the show went on and Wilco played for over two hours. They opened their show with "Dawned on Me," one of the standouts on their 2011 (comeback?) record, The Whole Love. The band then continued with a solid mix of new ones and old favorites (and a good deal of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot). The set also included, "California Stars," one of the songs from the 1998 Mermaid Avenue album with Billy Bragg, which saw Wilco and Bragg putting unheard Woody Guthrie lyrics to original music. They play that one a lot but nonetheless, it was an appropriate time to honor the folk legend who would have turned 100 earlier this month.
During the show, Jeff Tweedy made a comment that we (Brooklyn) smelled like bacon, calling us the most bacon smelling show that he'd ever experienced. A commenter on a Wilco message board also noted that "at one point between songs he started singing a song called 'Bacon Rain.' He also made sure the rain wasn't causing anybody to chafe, and asked if anybody needed gold bond in the crowd." We're pretty sure he was smelling the fries being cooked stage right at The Farm on Adderley concession stand.
The tour continues in Prospect Park tonight (7/24). Last night, Jeff mentioned that for the people who are coming back for a second night, they'll be mixing up the setlist a bit, only playing repeats of certain songs (though it's hard to know exactly how serious he was being). After that, they'll play Terminal 5 on Wednesday (7/25) with Cibo Matto.
More pictures and the setlist from last night's show are below...
Wilco in Chicago earlier this month (more by Matt Zielger)
As mentioned, Wilco's tour brings them to NYC for three shows this month; July 23 and 24 at Prospect Park and July 25 at Terminal 5. As mentioned, Lee Fields and the Expressions open the 7/23 date and Lee Ranaldo Band opens the 7/24 date, both of which are sold out.
Since we last wrote, NYC band Cibo Matto have been announced as the opener for the Terminal 5 show, which is now also sold out.
In related news, Wilco member Mikael Jorgensen will be back in NYC for his own show on September 8 at Mercury Lounge with Minerva Lions. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (7/20) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (7/18) at noon. Mikael also plays one day earlier, September 7 at The Saint in Asbury Park, NJ (tickets).
As mentioned earlier today, Billy Bragg -- whose Mermaid Avenue records with Wilco brought the songwriter back in to the pop culture zeitgeist in 1998 -- will be in NYC soon for some Woody Guthrie 100 celebrations. It's part of a North American tour for Bragg who tonight (7/6) will play the legendary Winnipeg Folk Festival. The tour will then continues, and includes a stop at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in Guthrie's Okemah, OK birthplace on July 12th.
Bragg then heads to NYC for City Winery's WoodyFest on July 13 (tickets) with Amy Helm & Joe Purdy and host Steve Earle who then plays with Billy again in Coney Island the next day on Woody's actual birthday (July 14). The Coney Island potion includes two events: a screening of Mermaid Avenue documentary Man in the Sand followed by a book/CD signing with Bragg and Nora Guthrie; and an outdoor screening of Hal Ashby's 1975 Woody Guthrie biopic Bound for Glory that will be preceded by a performance by Bragg and Steve Earle at 8PM (the movie starts at 8:45PM).
Bragg's tour continues after that, hitting Sweden's Way Out West festival in August, and many other Woody-themed shows throughout the year. All dates are listed below.
Back in April, Nonesuch Records released Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions which takes the original, critically acclaimed 1999 album where Wilco and Bragg wrote music to unpublished (but complete) Guthrie lyrics and adds 17 previously unreleased recordings made during the Mermaid Avenue sessions, plus a DVD and 48 page booklet.
The Billy Bragg show at City Winery is one of three nights of "Woodyfest" that Steve Earle is hosting and playing. Steve doesn't have any more NYC dates scheduled after that at the moment, but later this month he does head out on a tour with the Dukes that hits Tarrytown and in September he's doing a solo, acoustic tour that visits NJ, Bethel, and Poughkeepsie. In October he plays Austin City Limits.
Below you can read a little more on Guthrie and the Mermaide Avenue album, penned by Billy himself, plus all upcoming BB tour dates.
Wilco in Chicago, December 2011 (more by Matt Zeigler)

If you didn't get tickets, Wilco have just added a Terminal 5 show on July 25. Tickets ($45) go on sale Friday, June 29 at noon. No ticket link yet but you can keep checking Ticketmaster.
