Zombi

Zombi is back in NYC and will descend on Santos Party House on Dec 18th with Arp and Hours of Worship. Tickets are on sale. The show is one of two dates for Zombi and Arp, the other being Philly on 12/19.
Though Zombi released Spirit Animal on Relapse earlier this year, the pair hasn't rested ever since. Steve Moore has released multiple remixes for the likes of Maserati (RIP Jerry Fuchs), Jupiter, Arnaud Rebotini, and others as well as original compositions under his name and under the guise of Gianni Rossi and Lovelock (who was recently featured in the recent Chromeo DJ Kicks Comp). Meanwhile, AE Paterra has been driving to the hoop with Majeure, his solo project which saw it's debut, Timespan, on Temporary Residence Limited earlier this year.
Arp also provides music specially commissioned for "REPLICA" at the New Museum...
REPLICA, a collaborative performance piece by Daniel Arsham, Jonah Bokaer, and Judith Sanchez Ruiz, examines memory loss, pattern recognition, and perceptual faculties as they apply to the human body. The piece employs built spaces, objects, lighting, and other media to create the illusion of an expanded space through the use of video and/or still images. REPLICA creates situations onstage that could not veritably exist in physical space. This happens through the use of creative geography in video and built spaces, transporting movement to different locations that appear to be just outside the audience's sightline. You can catch REPLICA on December 10th, 11th 17th and 18th, with related events throughout the month.
Hours of Worship will open the Santos show in celebration of a new EP, Into The Grass, out on on 12/4 via Ekleroshock. Hours of Worship also dropped a remix for Wildildlife's "Nervous Buzzing", which is available above.

Torche at Highline Ballroom (more by Justina Villanueva)

If you somehow missed it, the Torche/Harvey Milk mega-bonanza swings it way into Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg (and our hearts?) on Sunday (July 26th) with the mysterious but crushing Pollution. Tickets are still available. Good times.
Sunday is also the Trail of Dead Pool Party just a couple of blocks away. Consider the show at Music Hall the unofficial afterparty.
In addition, Harvey Milk recently released a split 7" with another fave around these parts, Wildildlife, which is available via Volcom's split 7" series. That 7" is extremely limited, much like Harvey Milk's other 2LP which is limited to 300 copies, the S/T "Tour Edition" LP more commonly known as The Bob Weston Sessions. Who wants to win one of them and/or a pair of tickets to Sunday's show? Details at the end of this post.
Torche recently dropped a video for "Healer" from Meanderthal and the Healer/Across The Shields 12" (which features exclusive tracks). Check that out below. Floor, which featured members of Torche, recently reissued their first 7".
And while we can neither confirm nor deny that members of Pollution are also members of Unearthly Trance, we CAN confirm that Unearthly Trance will be at Public Assembly one week after MHOW... at the BV-BBG Show No Mercy show! Set aside August 2nd to catch Keelhaul (who have a kick ass new album on the way), Minsk (who have a new album of their own), STATS (who gives away free music), and Defeatist (who recently played with Hatred Surge), and in the meantime, dig on the new Seldon Hunt flyer below!

Absu @ Spiro's, March 20th at WFMU/Acquarius Records SXSW Showcase

Much like Cynic, Carcass, and At The Gates before them, fallen metal heroes Atheist are BACK. A few weeks ago, the Atheist camp let loose that they were booking shows for summer 2009 and "into 2010". One of those shows, Maryland Deathfest on May 22 - 24 at Sonar in Baltimore, MD, was revealed six months ago, but we now have word that Atheist will play BB Kings with The Faceless, Psyopus, The Agonist, and Gnostic on July 12th! Ticket info is forthcoming. Full Atheist tour dates are below.
Atheist are a technical death metal band from Florida, founded in 1984, whose music combined brutal riffs with subtle latin music arrangements and elements of jazz. Their second album, Unquestionable Presence, released in 1991, has been regarded by some critics as one of the most influential technical death metal albums of all time. -[Wiki]Another upcoming show at BB Kings features a band that I was fortunate enough to catch in Austin... Absu! Absu will be joined by Glorior Belli, Austin's own Averse Sefira, and Sothis in a previously announced US tour that will make it's NYC stop on June 21st. Tickets are still available, including a VIP meet & greet before the show.
Absu, Wildildlife, and Slough Feg as well as Obits and many many esteemed others played Spiro's on March 20th as part of the WFMU/Aquarius Records showcase. Although there were some sound issues, Absu were phenomenal and it seemed like they could have (and wanted to) kept on playing well past their slot time. Slough Feg was equally as impressive; those riffs were somehow even more soaring live than on record. Although Wildildlife in the live setting lose some of the quirky experimentalism that makes their records so unique, they were great in a wholly different sort of way.
Absu's new self-titled album, their first in eight years (!), is out NOW on Candlelight. Wildildlife recently reissued the Peas Feast 12" on Crucial Blast. Slough Feg's new album, Ape Uprising is due on June 2nd via Cruz Del Sur.
More Absu, Wildildlife and Slough Feg pics, and all tour dates, are below...

In related news, make sure and check out the mighty Withered (who absolutely killed it at Scion) when they headline Union Pool on April 16th!
Bison BC & Children will team up for a show at Death By Audio on April 18th, linking up with Violent Bullshit (ex-Panthers), Circle of Buzzards (with Bob D'Amico and Jason Lowenstein of Sebadoh and Fiery Furnaces) and Naam. Children's new record is due on Kemado on April 14th, no word on the title yet. Bison BC are riding high off of their killer record from last year, Quiet Earth, and Death By Audio will be the bands first appearance since they played Europa with Harvey Milk. Full Bison BC tour dates are below.
The Devil & The Sea

One record that I gave alot of spins in 2008, but didnt make my year end faves was The Devil & The Sea's Heart vs Spine (pick that up here). The band is gearing up to tour the Northeast and have added a date at The Charleston on Mar 31st with another band that has been ringing my ears lately, Music Hates You. Full tour dates are below.
Justin K Broadrick dropped a MEGA-update on all of his projects, including Jesu, GreyMachine (with Aaron Turner), White Static Demon, Solaris BC and his many many remix projects. On the Jesu front, look for TWO live LPs, Opiate Sun EP in July, Infinity in June, Heart Ache reissue with a bonus Unreleased EP from 2003, and a reissue of the ENVY/jesu with an "Unconfirmed Bonus Mix". Check out the full update here.
Grief have called it quits... again. Sob. Their appearance at Maryland Deathfest has been cancelled as well. In honor of the fallen, Kill That Cat posted a video from a show before they kicked the bucket for the first time. Check that out below.
That video, and news on Atheist, Craft, Obscura, Municipal Waste, and soooo much more as The Week In Metal continues!...

Hmm.... who's guitar rig could this be?
In his own special way, Stephen O'Malley dropped a bunch of news on his upcoming projects via a detailed discography. SOMA posted the following unreleased, unannounced records:
SUNN O)))So, TWO new sunn o))) records, a Khanate, AND an Æthenor record! We knew that sunn 0))) was working on a new record, but a quick search turned up that Blast First (Petite) will drop that sunn 0))) and Pan Sonic pic 10". On further review, Æthenor's website reveals the following:
Che (SUNN O))) & Pan Sonic do a Suicide cover, pic 10" 2009)
Dimensions (TBA) (2xCD & 2xLP 2009)Æthenor
Faking Gold & Murder (CD & LP 2008)Khanate
Clean Hands Go Foul (LP & Picture Disc 2008, CD & CD Japan 2009)
David Tibet sings and contributes lyrics on the forthcoming Æthenor album; other guests are Kristoffer Rygg (Ulver) and long time Æthenor collaborator Alexander Tucker [who just played ATP].Most importantly though, what the hell is that Khanate record Clean Hands Go Foul?!? Stephen O'Malley had this to say:Tentatively titled 'Faking Gold and Murder' from a line in the text, Æthenor is the project of Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley, Vincent de Roguin (Shora) and Daniel O'Sullivan (Guapo)
The long lost 4th KHANATE album Clean Hands Go Foul will finally emerge later this year. This was recorded directly after the Capture & Release album at Bisi Studio Brooklyn February 2005.James Plotkin, bassist for Khanate, posted one unreleased song excerpt to his website, "Wings From Spine" which is downloadable above. Will "Wings" appear on Clean Hands Go Foul? Who knows, but in the meantime prepare for the thundering evil doom of the mighty Khanate! On a related note, Plotkin's Khlyst, is taking orders for Chaos Live, a multicamera live DVD shot at Hydra Head's CMJ show in 2006. While you're there, pick up Boris's limited-to-1000 Floorshaker 12".
Mastodon's Brent Hinds had a little run-in with King Khan over the weekend, and while we have heard King Khan's side of the story, ridiculous pictures included, we haven't heard a peep from Brent Hinds. My thoughts echo that of one astute Blabbermouth reader: "The real victim here is the beer". Brann Dailor of Mastodon was recently interviewed by Metal Injection.
Justin Broadrick (Jesu, ex-Godflesh) dropped a bombshell of sorts.... a new project, Grey Machine, featuring Aaron Turner (Isis), Diarmuid Dalton (Jesu), and Dave Cochrane (Transitional)! From the upcoming album Disconnected, the band posted "Vultures Rise" available for download above!
Crom is back on the west coast, but evidence from their east coast killing spree is popping up all over the net. Check out pics from their show in Worcester, MA at Return To The Pit, an interview with a shirtless Crom at Vice magazine, as well as audio (and video below) from their appearance at WFMU.

Wildildlife @ East River Bar, NYC - June 2007 (thepiratehat)

If you've ever wondered what would happen if Animal Collective discovered doom metal, look no further than "Tungsten Steel: Epilouge (sic)" off Wildildlife's debut, Six. It's eight minutes of double-kick and distorto-crush as filtered through lysergic goggles. Ain't a single instrument on the track (including them medicine-man vox) untouched by the mighty reverb pedal. [PREFIX]San Francisco's Wildildlife have announced plans for a US tour in support of "Six". That includes SXSW, a show at Cake Shop in NYC, one at Death By Audio in Broooklyn, a date with The Slits, and a radio appearance on WFMU.
Check out the the MP3's above. 'Return To Zero' is Scott Kelly's show on Combat Radio. You'll hear the Wildildlife track "Nervous Buzzing" in the December episode we've linked. All tour dates below......

The Hidden Hand, Place Of Skulls, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, and the aforementioned Shrinebuilder all have had one thing in common, the stamp of quality by doom legend Scott "Wino" Weinrich. Now Southern Lord brings word of "Punctuated Equilibrium", aka the "Wino" solo record! Backed by skinsman extraordinaire Jean-Paul Gaster (Clutch) and Jon Blank (Rez n) on bass, the new record will be tracked by producer (and legend in his own right) J Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines, etc).
Fresh off of the right & left hook known as "Sleepwell Deconstructor" and "Seance Prime", hardcore punkers Trap Them will be bobbin' & weavin' through Europe and the east & west coasts through the end of April, including a date at the Charleston on March 12th and another at The Knit on June 16th.
