Her very very full schedule this week includes: Littlefield tonight (9/28) as part of Night Train with David Cross which is sold-out. She's also at Littlefield on Tuesday (9/29) with her show/competition "Punderdome 3000" that she co-hosts with her dad, Fred (tickets). Arcade Fire The Reflektor Tapes

The 2015 edition of Pop Montreal is coming up in less than a month (September 16 - 20) and festival organizers have recently made a few additions to the already robust lineup. Perhaps most interesting is that Pop's film fest will have the world premiere of director Kahlil Joseph' Arcade Fire documentary The Reflektor Tapes which promises:

The film recontextualizes the album experience, transporting the viewer into a kaleidoscopic sonic and visual landscape. It charts the band's creative journey as they lay foundations for the album in Jamaica, record in Montreal and play an impromptu gig at a Haitian hotel on the first night of Carnival, before bringing their breathtaking live show to packed arenas in Los Angeles and London. The Reflektor Tapes blends never-before-seen personal interviews and moments captured by the band to dazzling effect, and features 15 minutes of exclusive unseen footage, filmed only for cinema audiences.
That is just ahead of the film's North American September 23 release date. It will be playing in NYC at Sunshine Cinema, BowTie Cinema Chelsea 9, East 86th St Cinema 4 in Manhattan and Williamsburg Cinema in Brooklyn. and tickets are on sale now for many of those screenings. You can watch the trailer for that below.

The full music lineup has been finalized and new additions include Seattle garage rock legends The Sonics, Doldrums, UK band All We Are, Prison Garde (the latest moniker of electronic musician Vaughn Robert Squire aka Sixtoo) and more. Other artists playing this year's Pop Montreal include Built to Spill, Giorgio Moroder, The Cribs, Mikal Cronin, Godflesh, Will Butler, Babes in Toyland, Thurston Moore, Stars of the Lid, Cannibal Ox, Besnard Lakes (performing as a 17-piece "orchestra"), Viet Cont, The Orb, and more.

There are also lots of panel discussions and lectures happening via the Pop Symposium, including one with Canadian songwriter Andy Kim (the man behind The Archies' "Sugar Sugar" and other bubblegum hits),

Festival passes and day passes are still available. Full Pop Montreal music and film lineups are listed below.

Arcade Fire's Will Butler has been pursuing his solo career this year, having visited NYC a few times. He'll return this Wednesday (7/1) at The Well for the venue to celebrate Canada Day, here renamed Canada D'eh, with fellow Canadian bands July Talk and Walrus. It's free with RSVP, and they'll have a Canadian breakfast (aka pancakes with maple syrup), Canadian whiskey and Canadian craft beer. Doors are at noon and the music starts at 5 PM.

Will's only other upcoming dates at the moment are Moscow's Red Park Festival and Pop Montreal. Watch the video for "Anna" off his solo LP, below.

Will's brother and bandmate Win will be in NYC under his DJ moniker, DJ Windows 98, on 8/7 at LPR. Tickets for that are still available.

2015 Sasquatch Festival Day 2
2015 Sasquatch Festival Day 2
2015 Sasquatch Festival Day 2
2015 Sasquatch Festival Day 2
2015 Sasquatch Festival Day 2

While Friday and Sunday nights are topped with EDM, Saturday belonged unequivocally and inarguably to good ol' rock and roll.

It climaxed early with a face-melting set from five-guitar band Diarrhea Planet, who brought every rock god dream to fruition: Head banging. Windmilling. Soloing behind your head. Soloing with your teeth. A dusty mosh pit kicked up in front of the stage, the wild-eyed youth unleashing their inner demons, all to the ritualistic howl of the electric guitar...

...The onslaught of guitars continued after sunset and well into the night, with veteran indie rock acts The Decemberists and Modest Mouse anchoring the main stage. The day concluded with a great set from fellow veteran band Spoon, but by that late the crowds had largely given up on guitar rock, trading it in for the synthesized sounds of ODESZA. - [Oregon Live]

Day 2 of the 2015 Sasquatch Music Festival, which happened Memorial Day Weekend in Gorge, WA, featured such heavy-hitters as Spoon, Modest Mouse, Decemberists, and Father John Misty, as well as Arcade Fire's Will Butler, Sylvan Esso, and greasy-haired upstarts Diarrhea Planet, King Tuff and Ty Segall's proto-metal trio, Fuzz.

Pictures from Sasquatch day 1 are HERE, and we'll have photos from the fest's final two days soon. More pics from day 2 below...

photo: FKA Twigs @ Webtster Hall (more by Amanda Hatfield)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

FKA twigs @ Brooklyn Hangar
FKA twigs has always incorporated dance and fashion into her persona, but apparently these three shows at Brooklyn Hanger are going to be more that a concert. Titled "Congregata," she says they're "an insight into my mind, my roots, my inspirations. a swelling conceptual performance using dance, performance and my music to date to create a world that I want you to share with me." Wearing Alexander McQueen and armed with 10 dancers, this two-hour performance piece should be something. Sold out.

Skate & Surf Festival @ Asbury Park Oceanfront
Skate & Surf may have gotten the rep as being a strictly pop punk festival, but it's more diverse than that and this year's lineup is pretty impressive. Among the big names on today's bill are Jersey heartland punks The Gaslight Anthem and the grungy Manchester Orchestra, and elsewhere there's recently-reunited late '90s emo/punk bands Small Brown Bike and Hot Rod Circuit, recently-reunited post-hardcore/metalcore bands Poison the Well and From Autumn to Ashes, cathartic rockers Beach Slang, the dead-serious post-rocky Pianos Become the Teeth, killer noisy/melodic indie rockers Cloud Nothings, the youthful nasal-voiced Front Bottoms and Modern Baseball, and still many more.

Black N' Blue Bowl @ Webster Hall
While Skate & Surf goes down just outside of NYC, a different kind of punk festival goes down right in the heart of the city. Today's lineup includes a reunion from Revelation Records hardcore boundary pushers Burn, another reunion from crossover thrash vets Crumbsuckers, hardcore lifers Sick Of It All, Boston traditionalists The Rival Mob, Dave Smalley (performing Dag Nasty, All and Down By Law), and many more.

Patti Smith, Loudon Wainwright, Kaki King, Nicole Atkins & more @ City Winery
NYC punk legend Patti Smith, singer/songwriter Loudon Wainwright, guitar great Kaki King and more come together for this Nepal benefit which Patti's daughter Jesse organized.

Dorthia Cottrell, Nate Hall, Serpentskirt @ Acheron
With Windhand, Dorthia Cottrell makes crushing melodic doom, but on her own she favors an acoustic guitar over walls of distortion, and makes something closer to psychedelic folk. Her tour with Nate Hall of US Christmas hits NYC tonight.

Frankie Cosmos, Gingerlys, Lost Boy? @ Brooklyn Bow Wow
Brooklyn Bow Wow is a doggy day care, and they're describing tonight's show as "a first ever pups & humans concert." They add, "there will be a bar and plenty of pooches to jam out with." Twee folk singer Frankie Cosmos headlines.

Ende Tymes Festival @ Outpost Artists Resources
NYC's "festival of noise and abstract liberation" wraps up tonight with Jeff Donaldson, Long Distance Poison with Jonas Bers, Kyle Eyre Clyd, Gen Ken Montgomery, and many more.

Mandolin Orange, Leif Vollebekk @ City Winery
Old-timey folk/country/bluegrass duo Mandolin Orange team up with underrated Canadian singer/songwriter Leif Vollebekk for this quality double bill.

Jay Z @ Terminal 5
This is Jay Z's second of two shows this week at Terminal 5, a very small venue for a guy who's played multiple nights in a row at Barclays Center. And on top of that, he's promising old songs and deep cuts that he doesn't play live often, which is a pretty amazing treat for a guy with twelve albums ranging from good to great, who usually does hits-filled setlists. The only way in was to enter through TIDAL's contest which is now closed.

EMEFE, Will Butler (DJ Set), The Rad Trads @ Baby's All Right
NYC band EMEFE make widescreen funk-pop that sounds a bit like if Talking Heads got their start at Minneapolis' First Avenue instead of CBGB. Their just-released eponymous LP is a concept album based on French Revolution-era writer Jacques Lusseyran's book And There Was Light (stream it below), and they celebrate tonight. Arcade Fire's Will Butler is your DJ.

And The Kids @ Elvis Guesthouse
Boston-area band And The Kids make what they call "accessible unconscious existential indie glitter popsicle crisis music." You can hear exactly what that sounds like on their debut album, Turn To Each Other (streaming below), and at Elvis Guesthouse tonight.

Miho Hatori, Zulu P, Diamond Terrifer/M. Beharie DJs @ 'The Maze' at SELECT Art Fair
Ever wanted to see a bunch of bands play inside a giant maze on the roof of the former Dia Center building? Well you're in luck, as the You Are Here Festival does just that. It's part of the SELECT Art Fair, and tonight's headlined by Cibo Matto's Miho Matori.

American Nightmare, Sick Feeling @ Saint Vitus
Missed American Nightmare at Skate and Surf this weekend? Don't miss this just announced intimate Brooklyn show!

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.

Will Butler @ Baby's All Right 3/7/2015
Will Butler

Following his show at Bowery Ballroom, The Arcade Fire's Will Butler played his second of two NYC shows on Saturday night (3/7) at Baby's All Right. (He had tested out songs from his album at Baby's back in November.) A slightly shorter set than at Bowery, he still played most of his brand-new solo debut, Policy, plus a bunch of other songs including the ones he wrote based on headlines in The Guardian, and his cover of Violent Femmes' "American Music." Setlist below.

Tourmates TEEN opened the show. More pictures below...

Will Butler @ Bowery Ballroom 3/5/2015
Will Butler

"Both out of necessity and philosophy, I wanted it to be quick and dirty," Butler said, reached this week in New York, where he and his new band (including zero Arcade Fire members but featuring his wife's sister Julie Shore on keyboards and Antibalas's Miles Arntzen on drums) are rehearsing for his upcoming solo tour, which kicked off Thursday at the Bowery Ballroom and comes to Montreal's Le Ritz PDB, March 28 and 29.

"It's not DIY (do it yourself)," he continued. "It was done in a beautiful studio (Jimi Hendrix's old living room, upstairs at New York's Electric Lady Studios), with a proper engineer, not on a laptop - but I wanted it to be fast. I did it at a studio just so I was paying for it, and I would have pressure. In Montreal, I would have said, 'Oh, it's good,' and thought about it, twiddled, come back and tried some keyboard parts. Having it booked made it so I had to commit to things. - [Montreal Gazette]

His solo debut, Policy, isn't out till next week but the Arcade Fire's Will Butler celebrated early on Thursday night (3/5) with a sold-out show at Bowery Ballroom with tourmates TEEN. Will and his band played the entirety of his new album, plus 10 more, including a few of his Guardian headline songs and a cover of the Violent Femmes' 1991 single "American Music." Setlist, pics and video of from last night's show are in this post.

If you haven't heard Policy yet, you can stream it in full ahead of next week's release via Spotify, below. And speaking of the songs he wrote based on headlines from The Guardian, those are all out now and can be streamed below.

Will and TEEN play Boston tonight then their tour heads back to NYC on Saturday (3/7) for a show at Baby's All Right which is sold out. Updated dates are listed, with more pictures from Bowery, below...

Will Butler

Arcade Fire's Will Butler is a few weeks away from releasing his debut solo album, but this week he'll also be putting out a series of non-album tracks. The premise is he's writing a new song every day this week based on a news story on The Guardian. The first, "Clean Monday," is out now. Here's an excerpt of what he had to say about it:

I was reading the Guardian's live coverage of the forthcoming Greek proposals of how they're going to pay off their debts, when a little blurb popped up explaining that the Greek markets were closed today because it was "Clean Monday" - the Greek Orthodox equivalent of Ash Wednesday. It was an amazing/hilarious (well, maybe mildly amusing) coincidence to me that the Greek ministers were scrambling and figuring out how to avoid strict austerity on the day that Lent starts.

And all this scrambling is just to figure out the next few months. It's gonna be a long winter, and a long spring, and maybe a really long summer for Greece. But my fingers are crossed.

Listen below.

Will's tour hits NYC on March 5 at Bowery Ballroom with TEEN (tickets) and March 7 at Baby's All Right (sold out).

Will Butler

Perhaps you've noticed that Arcade Fire's Will Butler (brother of the band's lead singer Win Butler) has played as a solo artist a couple times recently. Well he's now announced that he'll put out his first solo album, Policy, on March 10 via AF's longtime (but now former) label Merge.

In other Arcade Fire news, members Richard Reed Parry and Jeremy Gara recently talked about their punk roots on Fucked Up singer Damian Abraham's Turned Out A Punk podcast. You can listen to that below.

Richard Reed Parry also has a new work with The National's Bryce Dessner, Black Mountain Songs, making its world premiere at BAM tonight (11/20) (performed by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus) and happening again Friday and Saturday.

Will Butler takes somewhat of a backseat to his brother Win in Arcade Fire but he'll be stepping into the spotlight on his first solo album which should be out sometime next year. He previewed songs last night at Brooklyn's Baby's All Right, his second solo show this year in the NYC borough. With backup singers and preprogrammed drums, he played a 10-song set for the sold-out room. The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree, sonically. You can hear for yourself -- there's video of most of his Baby's set, and the setlist, below.

In related news, Will sings on "Tiger," the new single by Brooklyn act Ponyhof who themselves played Baby's not too long ago. Check out the video for that below as well.

Will Butler of The Arcade Fire (and Academy Award nominee) is currently finishing up his debut solo album. He'll be in NYC on Wednesday (11/12) at Baby's All Right to play some new material. It's only one of a handful of live shows he's ever done -- his Rough Trade performance in August was his second -- and is also early (doors at 6 PM and over by 8 PM) and all-ages. Tickets are only $5.

Pop vs Jock

Arcade Fire singer Win Butler's annual charity basketball game, Pop vs Jock, will go down in conjunction with Pop Montreal once again this year. The game takes place on September 20 at the McGill University Sports Centre, and includes Win along with fellow Pop vs Jock alumni Will Butler (his brother, also of Arcade Fire), Nikolai Fraiture (The Strokes), and newcomer Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). Former NBA player Brent Barry and current player Matt Bonner round out the lineup as well. Tickets are on sale now, and proceeds will go to DJ Sports Club, a charity offering sports and education programs to Montreal youth.

Arcade Fire were just in NYC for a three night run at Barclays Center.

Folks who went to Rough Trade on Thursday (8/21) to see The Clean's sold-out show and got there early were treated to a surprise: an opening solo set from fellow Merge artist Will Butler who would soon be playing three nights at Barclays Center with Arcade Fire. It was Will's second-ever solo show apparently. Anyone catch his set? How was it?

Friday's night's Clean show saw Ira & Georgia of Yo La Tengo join the band onstage.

Arcade Fire

So, apparently Arcade Fire are in town for The 2012 Feast Conference. What is The Feast Conference?

The Feast Conference gathers remarkable entrepreneurs, radicals, doers and thinkers that bring their talents to the table to make life better. Our attendees don't just sit back. They'll be rolling up their sleeves at roundtables this October to respond to challenges issued by visionary speakers who dare to ask the question, "What does the world need now?"
One of the things the world needs is Arcade Fire's favorite Haiti-helping cause Partners in Health, and the band came down to join its director Paul Farmer to talk about it on Thursday (10/4)... and to play a song. Watch video of the whole thing below...

POP Montreal continued on Saturday (9/22) and BV photographer Dominick Mastrangelo was on the scene and got shots of The Sadies, "Shut Up and Eat Your Ballads" (Leif Vollebek and friends Michael Feuerstack, Laurel Sprengelmeyer of Little Scream, and Brad Barr covering Tom Waits), and Rags to Radio. He also stopped by the Pop vs. Jock basketball game which saw members of Arcade Fire and The Strokes playing basketball with other celebrities like actor Martin Starr (Freaks & Geeks, Party Down), pro basketball player Luke Bonner, and more.

David Byrne, who played a POP Montreal show with St. Vincent a day earlier (9/21) (they start their NYC-run of three shows tonight), performed at the game's halftime show. During his set, he was joined by Arcade Fire's Win and Will Butler and The Strokes' Nikolai Fraiture to perform covers of ? and the Mysterians' "96 Tears" and KC and the Sunshine Band's "That's the Way (I Like It)." Arcade Fire

Win and Will Butler are currently visiting their birth state for a few shows. Last night (5/3), Arcade Fire and Texas band Explosions In The Sky played to a roughly-5000 capacity crowd at The Backyard at Bee Cave in Austin. Arcade Fire, who co-headlined Coachella just a few weeks ago, also played the other night with Okkervil River in Dallas, and they do it again with EITS in The Woodlands tonight, near Houston where Win grew up, a fact that has not gotten past the locals....

"Yes, we're all excited that Arcade Fire is playing the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Wednesday night. And, yes, it's exciting that lead singer Win Butler spent his "formative years" growing up in that community which makes this -- to borrow a title from a beloved U2 anthem -- A Sort of Homecoming.

But it's time all of the greater Houston area suck on the bitter pill of reality for a moment and come to grips with a very real truth: Arcade Fire is not a band from The Woodlands.

It is not even a Texas band. It is not even an American band and anyone saying anything to the contrary must also accept the equally preposterous notion that country icon Willie Nelson hails from Vancouver, Wash., or that Madonna is British."
[says CultureMap Houston]

All upcoming tour dates (Bonnaroo included), along with pictures and the setlist from the Austin show are in this post, and they continue, along with a video of Will Butler & Marika recently singing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" at Chicago's Wrigley field, below...
