Toronto band Weaves, who were last in NYC back during CMJ, will release their debut EP next week (4/1) via Buzz Records. The band blend somewhat disparate elements -- big rock riffs, liquid bass, ethereal harmonies -- into a danceable, eclectic sound, led by Jasmyn Burke's distinctive, emotive vocals. It's catchy, off-kilter stuff, and we're premiering a stream of the full EP. Check that out, along with the new video for "Buttercup," below.

Weaves have a few Canadian dates lined up and will dip below the border to visit NYC for two shows: April 18 at Baby's All Right with Win Win and headliners Prince Rama (tickets), and April 19 at Shea Stadium with Slothrust and Video Daughters.

All dates are listed, along with the EP stream and "Buttercup" video, below...

Tony Castles
Tony Castles

Brooklyn's Tony Castles are gearing up to release their new EP titled Sharon Stone which will be out October 23. If your favorite Tony Castles song to dates was their magnificently dreamy "Black Girls in Dresses" the six tracks on the new EP definitely lean in that direction. It makes for nice autumn listening, when the days grow shorter and shadows get long. We've got the premiere of "One Tone Man" from the EP at the top of this post and you can stream snippets of other tracks below.

The band have a few NYC-area shows coming up, including tonight (9/6) at Pianos; the Silent Lights fundraiser on September 20 at the Green Building with Motive and Gurpal (advance tickets); and September 28 at Delinquency with Backwords, Zula, and Ancient Sky.

Win Win

Tonight's show at Pianos is part of Win Win's September Residency that happens every Thursday this month at the LES club. Originally a strictly-electronics duo (whose most recent album came out on Vice last year), Win Win are now a three-piece with an updated, band-driven sound as can be heard on new single, "Salt Days," from their new album, Double Vision (due out 10/16 via VICE) which you can stream below.

Win Win's September residency line-ups are as follows:

September 6: Jahan Lennon (Mad Decent), Roofeeo, Tony Castles, Sister Crayon, Taddy Porter

September 13: Behavior, Steel Phantoms and Beast Patrol

September 20: Slam Donaue (profiled here), Sleep Kitty and Warm Ghost

September 27: Crinkles, Window, Delicate Cutters, Louis Schefano and Brian Degraw

Streams, all listed Tony Castles dates and Win Win residency flyer are below.

Vivian Girls
Black Lips

[Black Lips] took the stage with their typical energy of 100 firecrackers and ripped into "Sea of Blasphemy", a helpful fan tossing a beer to lead guitarist Ian Saint Pé afterward. Shortly after, the band played my favorite song from their catalog, "Dirty Hands", arguably the best track from their awesome "live" album, Los Valientes Del Mundo Nuevo (and earlier, Let It Bloom). This track had people lip synching and lightly air punching, which then got kicked up a few notches with the first notes of "Katrina", which unsurprisingly got the biggest crowd reaction of the night. Lead singer and bassist Jared Swilley took a moment to mention that, "It feels good to be in Austin when it's not South by Southwest," -[Soundcheck]
The Black Lips and Vivian Girls tour, which ended in Baton Rouge on Saturday, and hit Webster Hall in NYC back on 4/12, swung through Emo's in Austin on Thursday (4/28). John Wesley Coleman opened the Texas show which is pictured in this post.

Vivian Girls are now on tour with No Joy. Black Lips are heading to Europe before coming back for more North American tour dates in June. All of those dates are below.

Black Lips have a new LP produced by Mark Ronson entitled Arabia Mountain due on June 7th. Check out the first single "Modern Art," released officially yesterday, above. While you're up there grab the band's remixing debut via a new WIN WIN remix that appears on a new Scion-sponsored WIN WIN remix EP. Vivian Girls' new LP Share The Joy is out now via Polyvinyl.

More pictures and some videos from Emo's and all dates, below.

Win Win

To quote Birds Need Feet...

"The National have recorded a song for the soundtrack of the upcoming Tom McCarthy-directed film Win Win which will see its proper US release on March 25. The song is called "Think You Can Wait" will play over the credits of the film, and it's a beautiful mellow track featuring backing vocals from Sharon Van Etten. The track was recorded at the recording studio of Aaron Dessner, guitarist of The National, and was produced by Peter Kadis who co-produced the band's 2007 album Boxer."
You can listen to the song below, and you can see Sharon Van Etten TONIGHT (3/16) at the BrooklynVegan official SXSW showcase (if you happen to be in Austin). Her other dates (like Hollywood Bowl with the National & Neko Case, and Music Hall of Williamsburg with Little Scream who plays our Austin day party this Saturday) are down there too...

Win Win, a new crew featuring Devlin, XXXChange, and Ghostdad, have a self-titled LP due via Vice Records on Feb 15th. The LP features many guest shouts over its 15 songs including Lizzie Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance (check out "ReleaseRPM" and its remix above and below), Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip (check out "Interleave" above and below), Matt Sweeney, Spank Rock, Andrew WK, and many others. Lizzie and Alexis will also be on hand to perform live with Win Win at their record release party at the Andrew WK co-owned Santos Party House on 2/15. The free show will take place downstairs at Santos while Odd Future is on the first floor ("limited tickets available at the door" for the sold out show).

Alexis Taylor also has a gig of his own scheduled a few days later. He'll bless the 1's and 2's at Brooklyn Bowl on 2/19.

Alexis Taylor has also been keeping busy with another new project...

"There are many surprising things indeed to be discovered in the course of listening to Start and Complete, the new album from About Group (out APRIL 26, 2011 on Domino Records), but perhaps none more so than the beautifully unorthodox genesis of the band itself.

Comprising Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Charles Hayward (This Heat), John Coxon (Spring Heel Jack, Spiritualized) and Pat Thomas, who has played with the likes of Derek Bailey, Tony Oxley and others, the band originally formed to make a record of improvised music for the Treader label in 2009, having never played together as a whole before the day it took them to make their first album. After a clutch of live performances (supporting Gang Gang Dance, playing Ornette Coleman's Meltdown Festival and even Glastonbury, among others) they regrouped to record this album. [Domino Records]
