Catharsis at The Acheron, Jan 2013 (more by Rebecca Reed)

Influential metallic hardcore crew Catharsis took over The Acheron on January 19, playing to a sell-out crowd alongside the reunited Deathcycle, Gehenna, and Withdrawal. The show was one of only four dates for the band, one of which included an appearance at the A389 Anniversary (along with a reunited Left for Dead). Check out a full set of pictures from The Acheron on Invisible Oranges.

If you missed out on the Left for Dead reunion, pray that Chris Colohan (also Burning Love) was kidding when he said "one-time" only. Either way, there is video of their set from the A389 bash below.

Gehenna at Acheron, Aug 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Gehenna

Good news/bad news situation here. Bad news? Radiation Blackbody has dropped off the previously discussed Catharsis show at Acheron on January 19. The good news? They've been replaced...... by GEHENNA. That's right, the infamous ones will team with their old split-mates to bring their nihilistic black-metal-induced hardcore back to NYC. The band will join Deathcycle (reunion) and Withdrawal for a whopper of a show that will follow ANOTHER whopper of a show the same day, the previously-mentioned late matinee with Vile Gash, Society Nurse, Slices (who released one of my favorite LPs of last year, this is their final NYC appearance!) and Believer/Law. Tickets are on sale for Catharsis/Gehenna, Vile Gash, or both together.

Of course Gehenna is on the East Coast to play A389 in Baltimore that weekend. Though advance tickets for the shows are sold-out, most of the bands will ALSO play pre-shows/matinees that have tickets at the door.

Catharsis's dates have grown since we last spoke, blossoming into an East Coast tour. All Catharsis dates and Gehenna video are listed below.

Vile Gash at Chaos in Tejas 2011 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Vile Gash

Who doesn't love an afternoon of killer punk and hardcore? Negative hardcore brutality from Vile Gash will headline a matinee, with Society Nurse, Slices (who released their Still Cruising earlier this year) and Believer/Law at Acheron on January 19. Show is at 5PM and ticketing info is on the way. The show is part of a larger set of dates for the final three bands on the bill, with NYC's Believer /Law also set to play WIERD soon.

The show backs into the BV Presented event that evening at Acheron with Catharsis, Deathcycle, Withdrawal and the recently added Radiation Blackbody. Tickets for that are also on sale.

Check out live video and audio below.

Catharsis
A389 has been like Fort Knox with respect to bands slipping out to play other shows on the East Coast. Word is that Left for Dead's one-time reunion at A389 will stick, but fortunately not so for Catharsis:

Catharsis was an influential American hardcore punk band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina that was active from 1994 to 2002. Catharsis were known for writing extremely lengthy songs (sometimes broken into multiple parts) with complex title names and unusual time signatures. They were related to anarchist collective Crimethinc...

Catharsis took appreciable influence from Integrity, Neurosis, His Hero Is Gone, Breakdown, Starkweather, Amebix, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Diamanda Galás, GISM, Refused and the early demo recordings of Belgian hardcore band, Negate. - [Wiki]

BrooklynVegan is proud to present the return of Catharsis along with a reunion from Deathcycle (who's last appearance was with the BV presentation of Winter) and A389's Withdrawal at Acheron on January 19. More details are still TBA, but tickets are on sale.

Head below for streaming video and audio from Catharsis, Deathcycle and Withdrawal, and stay tuned for additional announcements.

Left for Dead

In the wake of the sell-out of A389 2013 in Baltimore, the label has expanded the two-day fest into a full extended weekend! A389 Anniversary will kickoff with a pre-fest show at Ottobar on 1/17/13 featuring Integrity, Withdrawal, Vilipend and Dead Gods , then come to a close with a Sunday matinee on 1/20/13 at Charm City Art Space with Left for Dead, Iron Reagan, God's America and Eddie Brock.

In addition to the previously discussed Friday/Saturday shows at Ottobar, Saturday (1/19) will now feature a matinee at Sidebar with Despise You, Gehenna, Dead in The Dirt, Ancient Shores and WarXGames AND an afterparty with Nothing (who recently toured). None of the newly announced shows will have advanced ticketing; you can only buy them at the door. Full show details are below.

Catharsis has only one show during A389 festival, so what does that mean? Could a tour be in the works?

In other A389 news, the label will release Devoid of Everything, which collects Left for Dead's entire 1996-97 studio output remixed from the original 1/4" multi-track reels. Check out the art above and you can stream a track below. Left for Dead members went on to play in bands like Cursed, Haymaker, Pick Your Side, Burning Love, and many many more. This rare one-time reunion (I was assured!) is not to be missed. Check out some thoughts on the reunion via Chris Colohan here.

Meanwhile, Full of Hell, who plays the Friday show of the fest, is on tour with Gaza now and will play Acheron on 11/24 with Code Orange Kids (tickets).

If you're wondering who Iron Reagan is, the band is prepping to release their 20-track debut Worse Than Dead via A389 in 2013. The band features half of Municipal Waste and members of Darkest Hour and you can stream their demo below alongside details of the A389 festivities.
