Elks at Le Poisson Rouge (more by Greg Cristman)
ELKS

The knowledge that they have signed to Tee Pee, recent shows with Pentagram, and some of the band member's decidedly 70s look would indicate that Elks is another retro-leaning band hell-bent on reliving the golden-age of guitar rock. But you'd be wrong, Elks mixes the big bang of early Mastodon-ian riffs with Iron Maiden's melodic gallop and a host of others on their new EP Destined for the Sun due via the label on 9/13. Stream "White Fang Learns to Hate" and "Two Moons of Mars" below. The latter makes its first appearance here. Learn more about the first track in a recent interview with Revolver Magazine.

Elks will play Union Pool on September 16th as part of their Record Release party for the new EP. The band will also play the upcoming Tee Pee CMJ showcase at Union Pool on 10/21 with Hull and The Fucking Wrath. Full tour schedule is below.

In other news, Hull has released a new track from their forthcoming Beyond The Lightless Sky. And Hull will play a FREE show at Union Pool on 9/10 as part of the venue's Summer Thunder series, teaming the Brooklyn five piece with Wizardry. Stream that alongside the new Elks tracks and all tour dates below...

"Sorry to everyone planning on seeing us in Pittsburgh and New York, but our van has been broken down since Friday. We are currently held up at a hotel in Fremont, IN, and our van should be fixed as early as Monday. We plan to make the show in Allston, MA on Tuesday." - Bongripper
Bongripper will be forced to celebrate the release of their new Sex Tape / Snuff Film 7" elsewhere. They were supposed to play two NYC shows before MA, but their East Coast tour has ground to a halt. The show must go on though. The Sunday night (7/10) Brooklyn show at Acheron will now feature Wizardry and Iron Thrones . No word on another band at the Monday night (7/12) Precious Metal show at Lit Lounge with Bezoar and Dutchguts.

Bongripper played the Empty Bottle in their native Chicago on July 1st with Hate, Detergen, and DJ Dave Hofer. Pictures from that show are in this post. More of them, with a stream of their new 7" and all tour dates, below..

DOWNLOAD: La Otracina - "Raze The Sky" (MP3)

La Otracina

Incorporating elements of hard rock, punk, and metal, La Otracina still know how to lock into a heavy-psychedelic groove, and they do it well. The retro-leaning band will show off some of those XL riffs on a new LP Reality Has Got to Die out now digitally via Holy Mountain Records. Hard formats are due in September. Spacey but not meandering, gently melodic but with cojones, La Otracina pummel on burly tracks like "Raze The Sky" available for download above.

La Otracina's genetic make up is similarly awesome, featuring members of Titan, Children, and the dearly-departed Nebula (who played the BV day-party at Fontana's last year). The trio will show off their chops at a number of NYC shows in the coming weeks including Coco 66 Wednesday (7/28) with Telecult Powers & La Big Vic, August 27th at Union Pool with a killer teaming of Bezoar, Naam, and Wizardry, and September 16th at Union Pool with Mondo Drag and The Main Street Gospel. Full tour sked and some videos are below...

Stinking Lizaveta (more by Paul Birman)
Stinking Lizaveta

Call it a triple-triple. Three great power trios, Stinking Lizaveta, Pigs (mem-Unsane), and Wizardry, will team up to throwdown at Union Pool TONIGHT (5/7). The show is part of a two-week tour for Stinking Liz that will bring them as far as Madison, Wisconsin before heading back to their native Philadelphia.

Stinking Lizaveta's Sacrifice & Bliss hit last year via At a Loss Recordings. The band recently reissued the release on 180 gram vinyl. Pick up a copy.

Wizardry is also on tap to play another show in the following week, May 16th when they team up with Descender and Troop & Trouble to support the sludgy-crust Atlanta quartet Music Hates You at The Charleston. Music Hates You will log other dates along that trek, peppering the mid-atlantic with pockets of misanthropy. Full sked is below.

The Phenomenal Handclap Band

They're an NYC supergroup led by veteran producers Daniel Collas and Sean Marquand, and featuring contributions from L'Trimm, Calla, Sí Se, TV on the Radio, The Dap Kings, & The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. PHB blend psychedelic space disco & smooth 60s-style soul perfectly with early hip hop, and moody, synth-soaked hooks. We'll be releasing their debut album this summer. " [Friendly Fire Recordings]
The band's next, and only upcoming gig is a free show at Southpaw in Brooklyn on Tuesday, May 12th with Golden Triangle and Wizardry. Details on that, and some videos of PHB at SXSW, below...

Landmine Marathon

Her name is "Grace" and she has it... when she isn't on stage I mean. On stage, Grace Perry of Landmine Marathon will unleash the most unholy bellow within two inches of your face. And she did at Lit last Monday night (4/13), one of Landmine Marathon's two NYC shows, supported by the dark sorcerors Wizardry, the filthy perverts in Villains, and the hyper-costumed Seizure Crypt.

I arrived moments before Villains, though by all accounts and judging by the photos, I truly missed out on Wizardry.

I've seen Villains (who we profiled here) many times, but Monday was undoubtedly my favorite set from the crew. Vocalist Desecrator spat at the crowd, pelvis-thrusted his way through "Crazy for Blowjobs", and proclaimed "only vinyl is real, fuck CDs and fuck blogs". Well fuck you too Desecrator! ...but I still think you guys rule, and so does Lifecode of Decadence.

I was not prepared for Landmine Marathon; vile and revolting riffage combined with crazed-mama Grace Perry on vocals will most likely slide easily onto my short list of best shows so far this year. If you like any of the following bands, Landmine Marathon is a MUST: Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, Misery Index, Assuck, Carcass, early 90s death metal/grind and pretty much anything in the early Earache stable.

More pictures and a video from the show below...

Villains Live At Santos Party House (more by Justina Villanueva)
Villains

As previously noted, Landmine Marathon will team up with Villains, Wizardry, and Seizure Crypt TONIGHT (4/13) at Lit Lounge as part of their "East of Arizona" tour which will conclude in an appearance at the New England Hardcore and Metal Fest. The show marks their first appearance in NYC in three years and the band has doubled up on NYC to compensate, adding a second show at The Charleston on April 17th with Kavorka and Mutant Supremacy.

Bullet belts and/or six-inch-nail-adorned wristbands aren't required for Villains, but maybe they should be. Those who kneel at the altar of Bathory, Hellhammer, and Slayer will dig the Brooklyn crew's nod to the early stages of black metal and thrash. Villains recently dropped their second LP, Life Code of Decadence, on Nuclear War Now! Productions (pick it up here) which includes the title track and "Scumbag Preacher" which are both available for download above.

Before tonight's live metal debauchery, Lit Lounge will also host a listening party for the new album by Karl Sanders of Nile. Get there early (7- 9PM) to hang with Sanders and check out his new album Saurian Exorcisms due on 4/14 via The End.

Landmine Marathon released their LP Rusted Eyes Awake in 2008. Pick up the track "Bile Towers" here. Full tour dates, including a 4/16 in Bloomfield, NJ with Wetnurse, below....

wizardry

Brooklyn band Wizardry played their first show ever back in May at Union Pool. The invite read, "and I mean smoke, fire, ravens, chalices, actual wizards) 45 minutes of new blistering classic metal material, ohhhh!" They played the same venue in June, and I'm not sure how many times since then, but anyone who's seen them probably hasn't forgotten thanks to the 'classic metal' band's love of theater and costumes. The next chance to see them is on November 20th at Don Pedro's. Their last show was this past Sunday, November 2nd, on the Beasts of the East bill at Europa. More pictures from that one below...

Beasts of the East

This is that Harvey Milk (with Joe Preston) show we were talking about. Also playing the 12-hour, 2-stage show: Wetnurse (see our interview with Curran Reynolds), Wizardry, Bison B.C. and probably most of the bands listed on the flyer above, BUT Tombs seems to have dropped off the bill (though, as previously mentioned, they have a show coming up December 20th at Union Pool).

Alternatively (Sunday), Killdozer is at Knitting Factory and Pelican plays Bowery Ballroom

Listen to Harvey Milk's "I Do Not Know How To Live My Life" in the video below...
