David Gold, aka David Ypres frontman of Canadian doom metal team Woods of Ypres and member of The Northern Ontario Black Metal Preservation Society, passed away following a car accident yesterday near Barrie, ON, Canada. Gold was 31 years old and released three LPs with Woods of Ypres and was preparing to release a fourth via new home Earache. Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light is due on January 30th and you can check out a song from that record below and a second at Metal Hammer.
R.I.P. David Gold, you will be missed.
Woe at Knitting Factory (more by BBG)
Woe will join We Are All Savages, Mutilation Rites, and Magrudergrind for a Brooklyn show at The Charleston at midnight on Friday night (2/18, or Saturday AM). The show, billed as the "Official Eyehategod Afterparty", features some overlap with the actual Eyehategod show (happening at Europa), as both Magrudergrind and Mutilation Rites are on-board to play both shows. Eyehategod will also be at SXSW this year, playing an official showcase at Scoot Inn on 3/19 with Pentagram, Naam, Cough, Ancient VVisdom, and Primitive Weapons.
Woe is currently working on new material, and will be sporting a fresh lineup at The Charleston following the departure of the Madden brothers. Woe posted this message:
"First and foremost, we are sad to say that Evan and Shane have left Woe. I think that not addressing it would be disrespectful but if they want this note removed, I will certainly do so. Nobody is going to go into detail about it so please respect everyone's privacy and don't ask. While I cannot and do not claim to speak for them, I have nothing but positive memories of the fantastic shows we played together to say nothing of the phenomenally-received recent album. They will continue with The Green Evening Requiem and recent Earache Records-signees Woods of Ypres (who were recently announced as a headliner for Heart of Winter Fest in Richmond, VA this coming February) so expect to hear a lot from them.Meanwhile, Woods of Ypres are making their way to NYC as well, tagging Bowery Electric on March 16th with Gwynnbleidd. The band will reissue their fourth LP Woods IV: The Green Album via Earache on 3/22 and are preparing to release their final LP W5. More details on that are forthcoming, but for now checkout all tour dates and some video below.
And we soldier on."
Sourvein at BV-BBG 2009 (more by Jason Walker)
North Carolina's Sourvein will team up with Hull to take on The Acheron on August 27th. The all-ages jam will run you $10 and the festivities will kick off at 8PM. The show is one of a pair of shows lined up in the coming months for Hull; the band will also play THIS FRIDAY with Black Tusk, Zoroaster, and Dark Castle at The Studio at Webster Hall (tickets).
Florida's Khann will team up with Mockingbird, Before The Eyewall, and Divider for an all ages show at Acheron on August 24th. $10 gets you in the door. Khann are prepping their new LP, Erode, due on Black Market Activities later this year. The band recorded the LP with Chris Owens (Lords) during a recent East Coast tour that saw them appear at Lit Lounge with Tiger Flowers.
Canadian folk-black metal combo Woods of Ypres will hit the road for a short tour next week, tagging NYC on July at Bowery Electric with Vektor, Martyrd, and Fin'Amor. For the unaware, Woods of Ypres features the Madden brothers (bass, drums) of Woe amongst their ranks, and recently completed a tour diary for Decibel magazine.
Speaking of Bowery Electric, I have a pair of tickets available for giveaway for tonight's (7/6) Nominon / Evoken show. Details on how to win, as well as a gang of tour dates and some video, are at the bottom of this post...
