Pitchfork Festival - Day 1 - 7/19/2013

Wearing a shiny silver dress (while choir wore mostly blue) Bjork sang and moved across the stage with a great deal of passion and energy. Behind her, three screens displayed imagery that included an exploding star, the moon, ZX Spectrum-looking polygons, and even a sped up clip of a seal carcass being consumed by starfish and sea slugs underwater (read: slightly unsettling). The latter stood out, for obvious reasons, and close-ups of the starfish seemed to show a synchronized pulse with the music. Another highlight was the giant tesla coil enclosure that descended from the stage rathers during "Thunderbolt," creating huge sparks each time the synthesizer was played. After each song Bjork politely said "Thank you!" in her strong Icelandic accent which had everyone smiling and laughing. In the distance, a storm was approaching but appeared to be another special effect being incorporated in an already elaborate performance. Unfortunately, it was real, and reached the festival before Bjork could fully complete her set. - [BV Chicago]
The 2013 Pitchfork Music Festival kicked off last night (7/19) in Chicago's Union Park. Pictures from Friday are in this post.

Woods

Brooklyn's Woods will be spending most of the summer on tour and to commemorate the jaunt they'll be releasing a new single via their Woodist label. The b-side of that 7" is a very faithful cover of The Kinks' "God's Children" which originally appeared on the soundtrack to the 1971 penile transplant comedy, Percy. You can stream it below.

The North American leg of Woods' tour wraps up here in NYC for a show at Bowery Ballroom on July 27 with openers Alex Bleeker and the Freaks. No word on advance tickets but you can keep checking Ticketmaster if you like.

Woods' last NYC show was at Music Hall of Williamsburg back in November. All upcoming tour dates are listed below.

Brooklyn Bowl during a Deer Tick show (more by Tracy Allison)
Brooklyn Bowl

As you probably know, we've been posting a bunch of year-end lists from artists this year, and we've also posted a few from venue guys like Josh Moore and Johnny Beach from Bowery Presents, Jack "Skippy" McFadden of Emo's in Austin, and Andy Bodor from Cake Shop. Now we've got a top 10 albums list from Brooklyn Bowl talent buyer (aka booker) Adam Geringer-Dunn. You can see Adam's full list below.

Brooklyn Bowl is where Lucero (who gave us two year-end lists) are beginning their New Year's Eve run. The country punks will play a two-night stand at the Brooklyn venue on Friday (12/28) with Nude Beach and Saturday (12/29) with Hollis Brown. Tickets for night 1, night 2, or both nights are still available, and we're also giving away a 2-day pass. Details on how to enter to win are below. Lucero also play NYE at Wellmont Theatre with The Hold Steady, which is one of many New Year's Eve options in the NYC area.

Adam Geringer-Dunn's year-end list and contest details below...

Eddy Current Suppression Ring @ Cake Shop, June 2010 (more by Diana Wong)
Eddy Current Suppression Ring

One of the biggest, most genuine music fans I know is Andy from Ludlow Street indie rock club Cake Shop. He's an indefatigable listener and always turns me onto new stuff. Here we've got his "best of 2012 and live from cakeshop and recorded" which is topped by Parquet Courts' fantastic debut album, Light Up Gold. You can check out the full list of "21 AMAZING EXPERIENCES" below.

Andy is also a great maker of mixes, and I stil put in one he made for the Cake Shop/Slumberland 2009 SXSW showcase from time to time. Over at the Cake Shop blog, he posted a 2012 mix loaded with great stuff that you can download above and see the tracklist below. Highly recommend. Cake Shop had a successful Pledge Music campaign this year, signed a new 10-year lease, survived the Great Sandy Blackout, and I can't wait to see more bands there in 2013 (like maybe Obits on January 19) and beyond.

Andy from Cake Shop's Best of 2012 list and mixtape tracklist are below...

Veronica Falls at South Street Seaport in June (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Veronica Falls

UK indie pop outfit Veronica Falls, who are touring in 2013 with great new band Cheatahs, just spoke to us about their ten favorite things of 2012 music, film, and TV-wise. It was singer/guitarist James Hoare, specifically, who sent his list over, and he really likes Girls. He's got the single for "My Ma" by the now-defunct band, the solo album by frontman Christopher Owens (which actually comes out next year, but we'll let it slide), AND the television show of the same name all in his top 10 list. He's also got fellow indie poppers Mac DeMarco and Woods, and reveals his classic rock soft spot by including the new Rolling Stones song.

Veronica Falls' tour with Cheatahs hits NYC on March 8 at Bowery Ballroom with Cold Showers and tickets for that show are still available.

James' full list is below...

Tom Blankenship

"My Morning Jacket was formed in 1998 in Louisville, Kentucky by singer, songwriter and guitarist Jim James (real name: James Olliges Jr). The original line-up also included three members of the Shelbyville emo-punk band Winter Death Club; namely John McQuade (later known as Johnny Quaid - guitar and vocals), Tom Blankenship (later known as Two Tone Tommy - bass) and J. Roberts (later known as J. Glenn - drums)." [Wikipedia]
My Morning Jacket will stay busy this holiday season, with three shows at Port Chester's Capitol Theatre (tickets) that lead up to a New Year's Eve show in Boston, and then the Hurricane Sandy relief benefit at Asbury Park's Paramount Theatre on January 2 (tickets), a show that's hosted by Matt Pinfield and also features Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Joseph Arthur, Nicole Atkins, River City Extension, Tangiers Blues Band and "special guests."

MMJ bassist Tom Blankenship (who also recently helped out with Brooklyn Rock Lottery) gave us his list of Top 10 LPs of 2012. While it includes year-end list mainstays Frank Ocean and Alt-J, there are some surprises as well. You can check out his year-end picks below.

Grimes @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Grimes

Josh Moore, talent buyer at Bowery Presents, is in charge of booking shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg, but you'll also find gigs he booked at places like Brooklyn Bowl, Webster Hall and Terminal 5. You can also blame him for both Jam Cruise and Holy Ship. Like his his associate Johnny Beach and ex-Bell House/Union Hall/Rock Shop booker Jack "Skippy" McFadden before him, Josh gave us a list of his favorite albums of 2012. Check it out, along with some related videos, below...

Leonard Cohen

UK music magazine Uncut put out their list of the top 75 albums of 2012. The top ten leans pretty heavy on long-running '60s/'70s survivors who put out new albums this year, but plenty of the list-topping regulars from newer acts are on there too, along with a few interesting surprises (Sun Araw, M Geddes Gengras & the Congos!). You can check out the full list below.

Woods @ MHOW, 11/3/2012
Woods

"Bend Beyond" and also [Woods]'s last two albums -- "Sun and Shade," from last year, and "At Echo Lake" from 2010 -- have reflected a real leap forward for this band, which is fluent in 1960s-style psychedelic-edged folk and rock. Perhaps it was just a coincidence that the last song to play over the house speakers before Woods took the stage... was by Kippington Lodge, a British psych-pop band that was one of Nick Lowe's first outfits -- but probably not. -[NY Times]
Woods played Music Hall of Williamsburg on 11/3 with Widowspeak and Purling Hiss, the final show of a their fall tour that included a short stint opening for The Walkmen. Look for Woods to take a bit of R&R before hopping on a plane to Australia in the new year. Tour dates, promoting the spankin' new Bend Beyond, are below.

If you missed the MHOW appearance (or were there and would like to experience it again), NYCTaper has the whole thing in audio form for download. More pics from the show are below.

Woods at Austin Psych Fest 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)
Woods

Woods kicked off a tour with Mmoss last month surrounding Austin Psych Fest which included a NYC-area show at Maxwell's on 4/20 (how was that?). The tour is wrapping up this weekend with a Philly show last night (5/4), a NYC show tonight (5/5) at 285 Kent with Crystal Stilts, and a show at Storm King Art Center on Sunday with Widowspeak (who kick off a tour with 2:54 in June).

For Crystal Stilts, tonight's show is their only non-festival date, though they've been playing more and more lately. As far as festivals, they're on the lineup of this year's Capitol Hill Block Party.

All dates and a video of Woods at Austin Psych Fest below...

The Fresh & Onlys @ Psych Fest 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)
Psych Fest

The Reverberation Appreciation Society and The Black Angels have released the initial lineup poster for the 5th annual Austin Psych Fest. This year's fest, running from April 27th - 29th (in Austin), will take place at Austin's two newest big venues, recently opened Emo's East and the soon-to-be open Beauty Ballroom which is next door.

Emo's East is now the only Emo's since their Red River location closed on 12/30, and the Beauty Ballroom is (hopefully) having their rescheduled Grand Opening on January 27th (with Theophilus London and Treasure Fingers) and continuing on January 28th.

APF will feature around 60 bands over the three day, two room event. About 40 are included in the poster below, with another 20 or so to be announced in March. Announced bands include the Black Angels (who played Emo's East on New Year's Eve), the Black Lips, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dead Meadow, Olivia Tremor Control, Wooden Shijps, and many more. Weekend passes go on sale this Saturday (January 21st) at 12pm CST at austinpsychfest.com.

Check out photos from the 2011 edition of Psych Fest (held at Seaholm Power Plant) HERE.

Chaos in Tejas, a different kind of Austin music fest that happens in June, also announced bands on their lineup today.

SXSW, which is in March, continues to announce bands all the time and recently posted their initial schedule.

Prince Rama at MHOW in August (more by Erez Avissar)
Prince Rama

Prince Rama are set to release their upcoming LP Trust Now on October 4 via Paw Tracks. You can grab the album track "Rest In Peace" above. Prince Rama are also putting out karaoke videos leading up to the album's release with other artists singing tracks off the new album. You can check out videos of G Lucas Crane of Woods singing "Incarnation" and Janka Nabay singing "Summer of Love" below.

They'll tour in support of the album opening for the equally otherworldly Gang Gang Dance on their GGD's previously announced tour. It hasn't been revealed if Prince Rama open GGD's October 22 Bowery Ballroom show during CMJ (which tickets are still on sale for), but Prince Rama's dates do list a CMJ show that day.

As mentioned, Prince Rama also have a residency at Issue Project Room scheduled. That residency includes a show on Thursday (9/8) at the Brooklyn venue. Admission is free and RSVP is open. According to Issue Project Room's site:

2011 Artist-in-Residence Prince Rama will transform ISSUE Project Room into a point of origins. They will construct a "sacred space" using gathered matter from off-site urban wilds of Brooklyn. Audience members will be invited to build their own instruments and utilize them in an extended jam session open to anyone who wishes to attend (regardless of musical skill). This aims to investigate the utopian symbology of "the jam session" as a poetic reenactment and microcosmic creation of an ideal democratic society. Cut off from the rest of the world, yet wholly imbedded within it, this ritual space becomes a NO PLACE.
Prince Rama have also been added to the Javelin show at 285 Kent, which is happening on September 17. The Amil Byleckie Band are also on the bill. More details on this show are below.
