Doug Gillard's CV is impeccable, having logged time in Guided by Voices, Nada Surf, My Dad is Dead, just to name three. With those groups he was more of a background player, but he's a more than capable frontman and songwriter on his own. His new solo album, Parade On, is a real class act -- sparkling, muscular powerpop, touched by a style and grace that never falls out of fashion. The album's out next week (4/8) but you can get a taste on the album's first single, the lightly Harrison-esque "Ready for Death." You can stream it below.
Gillard's got a couple shows this weekend to celebrate the new album. He plays Cake Shop on Saturday (4/5) with Georgia power pop band Casper & the Cookies and Lame Drivers. The official record release show happens on Tuesday (4/8) at Glasslands with White Lighters, Workout, and Dear Comrade. Tickets for Glasslands are on sale now.
Doug also opens for his old bandmates Guided by Voices at Bowery Ballroom on May 23 which is sold out.
The annual Crest Hardware Art Show runs from June 30 - August 31 and kicks off this Saturday (6/30) with Crest Fest 2012 which goes from 1 - 7PM and features a live music stage, two DJ booths, plus local, creative art, and food vendors. The show is free and all ages.
Crest Hardware is located at 558 Metropolitan Ave Between Lorimer and Union in Williamsburg. This year's Art Show will include "100+ works from various artists of different mediums. The art will be installed contextually throughout 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, including a 5,000 sq ft urban garden...All art is about/made with/or inspired by hardware." Flyers and posters are at the bottom of this post.
Speaking of things happening on June 30 sponsored by Converse Rubber Tracks (which Crest Fest is), White Rabbits are playing a free show at Music Hall of Williamsburg Saturday night and we're giving away a pair of VIP tickets which guarantees you admission to the otherwise first-come, first-served show, and gets you into the VIP balcony. Details on how to enter are below...

Haim at Glasslands - 5/5/12
Hotly tipped LA trio Haim played a sold out show at Glasslands last month before heading over to the UK for a tour. The Brooklyn show was with Team Spirit (Ayad of Passion Pit) and Workout. More pictures and a video from that show are below.

"We used to do covers of rock songs by musicians like Billy Joel and Santana," middle sister, guitarist, and lead vocalist Danielle Haim, 22, explains. "Dad played drums, Mom played guitar, Este played bass, and Alana played everything else." Unfortunately, teenage rebellion comes in many forms (even in the laid-back Haim household) and, growing up in Los Angeles in the late nineties, the sisters were much more interested in what was playing on local pop radio stations like KIIS FM. "I think we were pushing out against our parents a bit," says Este, 24. "Every Sunday they'd put on 'Breakfast with the Beatles,' but we'd always want to switch it over to something like TLC, En Vogue, or Brandy and Monica."Los Angeles sisterly trio Haim are currently visiting NYC, having played Santos last night (anybody go?) and will be at GLasslands on Saturday (5/5). You can download their Forever EP from their website. It definitely owes more than a little to '80s Fleetwood Mac and early '90s Top 40.
