Thinking inside the box:
Veteran Staten Island hip hop crew Wu-Tang Clan are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year with a few different projects. First up is a story that would sound like an early April fools joke if it was from anyone else -- The Wu - Once Upon A Time In Shaolin is a new 31-track album recorded in secret over the last couple years. Your chance at hearing it, though, is only slightly better than your odds of scoring a reservation at Rao's.
Forbes reports that only one copy of the album is being produced which will be kept in a handcrafted engraved silver-and-nickel box and will then be toured in museums. It is there that the public may pay to listen to the album via headphones after a thorough screening process to keep pirates at bay. After the museum tour, the album will be put up for sale "in the millions," says RZA. He's got more to say about the record:
We're about to sell an album like nobody else sold it before. We're about to put out a piece of art like nobody else has done in the history of [modern] music. We're making a single-sale collector's item. This is like somebody having the scepter of an Egyptian king. For a Wu-Tang Clan album you will be able to purchase, the group -- who are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year -- will release A Better Tomorrow this summer. Maybe. Dissent within the group -- mainly between RZA and everyone else -- might make this A Better Tomorrow (Or The Month After That). Says Raekwon in a recent (and mammoth) feature on Grantland:
It's like getting the United Nations to all agree on one fucking thing. Italy ain't having it. Japan is on some shit. You know what I mean? Now, here it is, the 20-year anniversary that's so decoratedly respected that we might not even be on time for this shit.Whether the album is done or not, you can stream a track from it, "Keep Watch," below.

Clothier, dorm room furnisher, vinyl outlet and soon-to-be-Williamsburg-retailer (maybe with a liquor licence), Urban Outfitters recently released a pair of hand painted leather jackets that have been raising some eyebrows around the Internet. The jackets, a Crass-Sex Pistols-Clash mashup and a Dio-Megadeth-W.A.S.P. disaster, are selling for $375, here and here respectively. For that amount, you could buy two of The Clash's massive $175 Sound System, but you can't wear a box set of complete remastered works. Mind you UO's website says they're genuine vintage and only have one of each. They've been available for a while -- who would pull the trigger on these babies?

Rap legends De La Soul are returning with a new album, You're Welcome, this fall, and they've released a track from it, "Get Away (feat. The Spirit of the Wu)." Regarding the interesting "guest spot," De La's Posdnuos told Rolling Stone:
I've always loved the 'Intro' on Disc Two of Wu-Tang Forever - this erie sample with no beat, that they only talked over. I stumbled on the original sample while crate digging one day, took it straight to the lab and added drums. The feel is definitely gritty, hard and sounds like a Wu record, so out of inspirational respect, we included featuring 'The Spirit of the Wu' in the song title. You can listen to that song below.
As mentioned, De La Soul are heading out on a tour this year with Brad Paisley collaborator LL Cool J (w/ DJ Z-Trip), Public Enemy, Ice Cube, and Doug E. Fresh. That tour hits the NYC area on June 18 at New Jersey Performing Arts Center and June 20 at Roseland Ballroom. TIckets for those shows are still available. De La also play The Great GoogaMooga which happens from May 17 to 19 at Prospect Park with Father John Misty, Sharon Van Etten, and others. Registration for that festival is closed.

In related news, Raekwon and another Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah recently reminisced on the eight year anniversary of ODB's death (on 11/13) to TMZ. Raekwon's statement was somber:
"Today I just want to have a day of prayer to let my brother know I am thinking about him. This still hits me real hard. I will mourn over him today and think about how much he taught me."While Ghostface's was more reflective and uplifting:
"I never dwell on the day we lost him, I just celebrate the times I had with him. I pray and thank God on this day because he is my angel ... I spent the day just sitting quietly and praying. Dirt wouldnt want us mourning so I don't."RIP Ol Dirty.

Wu-Block, the project of Wu-Tang members Ghostface Killah and Raekwon and D-Block/The LOX members Sheek Louch, Jadakiss, and Styles P, recently went on a tour in support of the new project, having hit NYC's Highline Ballroom earlier this month (8/2), and they'll play Rock the Bells at Holmdel, NJ's PNC Bank Arts Center this weekend (9/1). The tour only included Ghostface and Sheek Louch, but the whole crew is reported to show up at Rock the Bells.
Ghostface and Sheek Louch will be taking Wu-Block on another tour this Spetember, and like their last one, Saigon will support. That tour hits NYC on September 17 at Highline Ballroom. Tickets for the NYC show are on sale now. All dates are listed below.

JSpace.com is throwing 'The Ultimate College Bar Mitzvah" at Highline Ballroom tonight (8/2) with sets from Talib Kweli, The Higher Concept, and The Rooks. It's a bit of an unusual show though. Tickets for that show are still available. Dark Time Sunshine also just released a new album, ANX, which features Aesop Rock, P.O.S., Busdriver, and others. You can stream that album in full below.
