YACHT at Treasure Island 2011 (more by Autumn Andel)
Dance-punk duo YACHT haven't released an album since 2011's infectious Shangri-La on DFA, but they did just announce a tour that kicks off at upstate NY festival The Hudson Project and hits NYC on September 20 at Mercury Lounge and September 22 at Rough Trade. Most dates, including both NYC shows, are with Burger garage rockers White Fang. Tickets for those shows go on sale Friday (6/13) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (6/11) at noon for the Mercury Lounge show. All dates are listed below.
Though YACHT don't have any new music, they do have a new free iPhone app. What would a YACHT iPhone app be, you ask? A press release tells us:
The brainchild of Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, YACHT have also expanded on their creativity-fueled DIY ethos by creating a free iPhone app called 5 Every Day, an interactive tool that suggests five interesting things to do in Los Angeles each day. The selections are edited by YACHT and broken into five categories--Art, City, Food, Music, and Wildcard-ranging from architectural sights and hikes to art happenings, secret shows, neighborhood favorites, ethnic grocery stores, and club nights.More info at the app's website. You can download it from the iTunes store and watch its trailer video below...
The app has no calendar, no archive. 5 Every Day is an online tool, but it points outwards, suggesting and creating ephemeral moments that enrich users' lives, every day. YACHT is celebrating the launch of 5 Every Day with a blow-out party on July 24th at the historic Mack Sennett Studios in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. Like the app, and the city itself, it will be full of surprises, with more details to come.

The goal of the Everything is New project is to empower the children of Light of Love Children's Home, many of whom have been rescued from bonded labour, child prostitution, homelessness and abject poverty. The project creates the opportunity for the children to 'star' in the cultural forms they themselves consider most meaningful - popular music and cinema. The Everything is New project has resulted in two albums, both of which are out January 20: Sun Choir, which was composed and recorded by Scottish art-pop band Marram with the kids of Southeast India's Light of Love Children's Home and features guest appearances from Jarvis Cocker, Owen Pallett, Irvine Welsh and more; and BOATS where artists such as Four Tet, Rustie, Dan Deacon, YACHT, Bear in Heaven, Deerhoof's Greg Saunier, Max Tundra, Gang Gang Dance and more took samples of the children and built songs around them.
Proceeds from the project go to the charity Scottish Love in Action which feeds, clothes, houses, educates and provides medical care for over 500 children through the Light of Love Home and School. You can stream Rustie, YACHT, Jarvis Cocker and Four Tet's tracks below.
There's also a 70-minute feature film that's included with physical copies of the Sun Choir album. You can watch a short and a not so short making of videos below...
The above is from YACHT's website for their Big Brother protest anthem, "Party at the NSA," which the band is offering up as a 99 cent download, proceeds from which are going to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. On the website, when you highlight the text you just get to see the redacted words: "PLAY THE MUSIC LOUD AND ENCRYPT YOUR SECRET THOUGHTS."
The track puts its protests (lyrics are below) into an early B-52s-style new wave format and features a guitar solo from comedian Marc Maron (!). You can also stream it below.
As mentioned, YACHT will be in town at the end of the month, playing Music Hall of Williamsburg on August 30 and then a free show at Surf Lodge in Montauk on August 31. Tickets to MHOW are still available.
And speaking of Marc Maron, he is not part of the lineup of this year's Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, but his name is.
Track stream and lyrics are below.

Descendents at Coachella 2013 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Much has been going on in the punk world lately, and in case you've missed out, here's a roundup of information on upcoming shows (mostly in NYC), and other related news. The big one is probably the inevitable news that Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn sued FLAG, the other currently operating incarnation of Black Flag. You can catch the impostors when their tour hits NYC on Septemeber 19 at Irving Plaza (tickets).
FLAG, as you may know, also share members with another classic punk band Descendents, and both of those bands will be playing this year's Fun Fun Fun Fest, which goes down in Austin from November 8-10. Tickets for that festival are still available.
Meanwhile, in an interview with Under the Gun (via Exclaim), Descendents drummer/producer Bill Stevenson mentioned that the band are slowly, but surely working on a new record, which will be the followup to 2004's Cool to be You. Bill said:
[The record is] in the embryonic stages. I have my studio, The Blasting Room, Stephen [Egerton] lives in Tulsa, and he has a studio too. Milo [Aukerman] even has a real small recording apparatus in his basement. Karl [Alvarez] still lives by me.Descendents have also recently been honored by some bands they've influenced. Pop punks Candy Hearts released a cover of "Nothing With You" on their new 7" (listen below), and FILTER Magazine recently released a free tribute album that features FIDLAR, Mike Watt + The Secondmissingmen, The Bronx, YACHT, TEEN, Good Riddance, and more.
So I went in a couple of weeks ago and recorded, so we got 11 songs done, [but] just the drums. We'll be passing those around, Stephen will be putting guitars on 'em, Karl will be putting bass on 'em, Milo will be singing on 'em. We'll get rolling but it's not gonna be like "Oh it'll be done in a month!" It's gonna take us several months.
Good Riddance, the '90s era Cali punks who reunited in 2012, will be playing their first NYC shows since reuniting, all of which will happen during this year's CMJ. They'll be playing both official Fat Wreck Chords (who put out the last Descendents record) showcases, including the one happening at Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 18 with The Flatliners, Western Addiction, and Brooklyn/NJ's Night Birds, whose new album, Born to Die in Suburbia, does a lot of justice to the sound bands like Descendents and Good Riddance helped create. That same lineup (minus The Flatliners) sets sail aboard a Rocks Off Cruise the next day (10/19). MHOW tickets are on AmEx presale now, and a general on-sale stars Friday (8/9) at noon. Rocks Off tickets go on sale Friday at noon.
Another long-running Cali punk band, not too far removed from Descendents or Black Flag, Angry Samoans play a previously discussed NYC show on September 15 at Bowery Electric with Last Call Brawl and Downtown Brown (tickets).
Another good punk option in NYC happening much sooner (this weekend to be exact) is As discussed, Citizens Arrest (who once counted Ted Leo as a member), who play Brooklyn's Acheron on Saturday (8/10) (57 Waterbury St) with Enabler, Miscegenator, and Dead Serious. Tickets are still available.
NYC street punk vets The Casualties have some Northeast dates this September. None of them are in NYC, but they do have an Orange County show on 9/7 at Ma and Pa's, a Long Island show on 9/12 at Revolution, and two NJ shows: 9/13 at Stanhope House and 9/14 at Brighton Bar. All of their dates are listed below.
Another East Coast punk tour lands in the NYC-area this month when Protagonist and related project Teen Agers hit New Brunswick on August 13 at Court Tavern with Not The Bees and Lay the Blame on Luck, and Brooklyn on August 14 at Saint Vitus with Go Deep, Scarboro and Divided Heaven. Tickets for the Saint Vitus show are on sale now.
As you may already know, Kid Dynamite are breaking up (again), but not before playing This is Hardcore in Philly this week (8/8) and their free House of Vans show (8/15) in Brooklyn with Joyce Manor, Red Hare, and Swearin'. RSVP for that show is closed.
Joyce Manor also have other shows around the one at HoV, including another Brooklyn show happening on August 17 at Knitting Factory with Glocca Morra and Dogs On Acid (ex-Algernon Cadwallader). Tickets for the Knit show are still available.
Obviously these are only a few of the upcoming punk shows in NYC. What else?

YACHT @ DFA 12th Anniversary (via @brooklynvegan instagram)
YACHT were just in town, having played both tiny Shea Stadium on Friday (5/24) and then the massive DFA 12th Anniversary Party at Grand Prospect Hall on Saturday night (5/25). I was at both shows and must say the band really brought the party and can work rooms large and small. If you missed them this past weekend, Jona, Claire and the rest of them will be back at the end of summer for two NYC-area shows: Music Hall of Williamsburg on August 30 and then the Surf Lodge in Montauk on August 31. Tickets to MHOW go on sale Friday (5/31) at noon. The Surf Lodge show, like all their summer concerts, are free.
Stay tuned for pictures from the DFA party. Meanwhile, updated YACHT dates are listed, along with a video of YACHT doing "Psychic City" at the DFA Anniversary, below.

YACHT @ T5, Oct 2012 (more by Diana Wong)
As mentioned before, DFA Records is throwing a 12th Anniversary party on May 25 at Brooklyn's spectacular Grand Prospect Hall, which is part of the Red Bull Music Academy's NYC takeover. That show is now sold out but a few of the acts playing it will be doing another show while here. YACHT, UK duo Prinzhorn Dance School (making their NYC debut) and Larry Gus will play the much smaller (and not quite as glitzy) Shea Stadium on May 24. Tickets for that show go on sale at noon today (4/24).
Flyer for the show is below...

this is where the DFA anniversary is happening
NYCers might be familiar with the infamous commercials for the spectacular Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn, with the proprieters finishing off the commercial by yelling "WE MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE" at the top of their lungs. I've always thought that the venue -- which is truly fantastic in the textbook definition of the word -- might make an interesting space for a musical event. It has before, including being the home of the world-music oriented Golden Fest.
Apparently I was not alone. We've mentioned it, but never fully given it the attention it deserves. As part of the massive Red Bull Music Academy takeover of NYC next month, DFA Records will make their dreams come true by hosting their 12th anniversary of party at the dazzling space on May 25, featuring a veritable army of the DFA crew including DJs and live sets from James Murphy, The Rapture, Black Dice (live set), Juan Maclean, Pat Mahoney, The Crystal Ark (live set), YACHT (live set), Sh*t Robot (live set), Planningtorock (live set), Prinzhorn Dance School (live set, their US debut), Still Going, Nancy Whang, Tim Sweeney, Larry Gus, Dan Bodan and Marcus Marr. There are bound to be some surprises in store as well and seems likely to be a very memorable night.
Tickets are still available, but reportedly "dangerously close to selling out."

YACHTat South Street Seaport, August 2010 (more by Chris La Putt)
Falling Into the Sun is an evening of heliocentric film, yoga, and experience.Claire Evans of Yacht commented on the event:
Curated by Claire L. Evans, science writer and one-half of the conceptual pop group YACHT, Falling into the Sun is an aesthetic and corporeal experience pairing experimental films tracing the arc of the sun and its light across the Earth with a course of yogic sun salutations in order to fully immerse participants in the sensation of being pulled to the center of our solar system.
Come prepared to move ecstatically and celebrate the end of our hemisphere's summer!
"I've curated an experiential heliocentric film screening to which YACHT will play a live score. If you bring your body and mind in equal measure we'll do sun salutations to experimental visions of the sun's light as it traces across the sky. There will also be healing, meditation, cosmic DJs, projection mapping, installations, and a late-night afterparty that will follow the sun into the morning. Let's get weird!"Full details on the event which also includes performances from Bobby Birdman, Seabat, DJ Jan Woo, DJ Jay Simon, and Bookworms are below, and you can pick up your tickets now (as of today) and only in person at Body Actualized Center. The show is the day after YACHT's appearance at the Beekman Beer Garden (8/30, tickets).

Yacht at South Street Seaport, Aug 2010 (more by Chris La Putt)
Yacht will play what promises to be a wild night at the Beekman Beer Garden on August 30. (Hopefully not this kind of wild.) The duo will headline what's being called Full Moon (yes it's a full moon that night), a party that also features Modular's Sneaky Soundsystem, Gigamesh, Tesla Boy, and FIXED DJs JDH & Dave P. There will also be "dazzling visuals" and "fire dancers." That sounds exciting. Could be a fun way ring out the summer. Tickets for that show are on sale now, and the flyer is below.
In addition to the Full Moon party, Yacht will keep themselves busy in August with a few festival dates as well as a few shows opening for Hot Chip in the Pacific Northwest. All Yacht tour dates are listed below.

DOWNLOAD: Idiot Glee - Trouble at the Dancehall (MP3)
Lexington, Kentucky's Idiot Glee is back in town, playing three shows this weekend: tonight (12/2) at Cake Shop with Devon Williams; tomorrow (12/3) at SUNY Purchase with Yacht and Dom; and then Sunday (12/4) at Cameo with Celestial Shores and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (the band, not the actor).
If you have yet to hear Idiot Glee's album Paddywhack, which takes '60s pop styles and smushes them like a half-remembered dream, you can download standout track "Trouble at the Dancehall" at the top of this post and stream the whole record at the bottom of this post. Says Tiny Mix Tapes:
There is a sense both of harmony in the broadest sense -- a textural and gently mouldering oneness -- as well as a charmingly naïve solitude that brings to mind the classic figure of the outsider artist. It's in the integration of these tendencies, the tender cultivation of tendrils connecting internal and external, the sacred and profane, that Friley's nightbloom shyly emerges and thrives. In addition to the album player below, you can also watch footage Bleary Eyed Brooklyn shot of Idiot Glee from one of their CMJ shows, as well as the "King of Baby Land" video.

Four stages and more. Fun Fun Fun Fest truly is non-stop fun of many varieties. BBG spent most of Friday at the Black Stage (the one Danzig headlined). His pictures, including Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Murder City Devils, Russian Circles and the afterparty at Red 7, continue below...
