The Crystal Ark @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar 2011 (more by Dana [distortion] Yavin)

As mentioned, the DFA Records 12th Anniversary Party is this Saturday (5/25) at Brooklyn's wonderous Grand Prospect Hall featuring a cavalcade of the label's talent, including live performances from YACHT, Shit Robot, Black Dice, Planningtorock, Prinzhorn Dance School, Factory Floor and more; and DJ sets from James Murphy, Nancy Whang, Juan Maclean, Tim Sweeny and more. Plus, "special guests." The show's been sold out for some time but more tickets are being released today at 2 PM so here's your chance if you missed out before.
In other news, the Crystal Ark have a few new remixes fo their track "Rain" (from last year's eponymous debut) and we've got the premiere of the Barker & Baumecker remix in this post. Stream that below.
Also as mentioned, YACHT, Prinzhorn Dance School and Larry Gus will play Shea Stadium on Friday (5/24). Tickets are still available, but if you'd like to go for free, we've got a pair to give away. Details on how to enter are below.
Prinzhorn Dance School also play Cameo next Monday (5/27) with DJ sets from DFA labelmates Planningtorock and CREEP, plus a live performance from Dan Bodan who is also playing his first U.S. shows as part of the DFA weekend. Tickets for that show are still available.

YACHT @ T5, Oct 2012 (more by Diana Wong)

As mentioned before, DFA Records is throwing a 12th Anniversary party on May 25 at Brooklyn's spectacular Grand Prospect Hall, which is part of the Red Bull Music Academy's NYC takeover. That show is now sold out but a few of the acts playing it will be doing another show while here. YACHT, UK duo Prinzhorn Dance School (making their NYC debut) and Larry Gus will play the much smaller (and not quite as glitzy) Shea Stadium on May 24. Tickets for that show go on sale at noon today (4/24).
Flyer for the show is below...

this is where the DFA anniversary is happening

NYCers might be familiar with the infamous commercials for the spectacular Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn, with the proprieters finishing off the commercial by yelling "WE MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE" at the top of their lungs. I've always thought that the venue -- which is truly fantastic in the textbook definition of the word -- might make an interesting space for a musical event. It has before, including being the home of the world-music oriented Golden Fest.
Apparently I was not alone. We've mentioned it, but never fully given it the attention it deserves. As part of the massive Red Bull Music Academy takeover of NYC next month, DFA Records will make their dreams come true by hosting their 12th anniversary of party at the dazzling space on May 25, featuring a veritable army of the DFA crew including DJs and live sets from James Murphy, The Rapture, Black Dice (live set), Juan Maclean, Pat Mahoney, The Crystal Ark (live set), YACHT (live set), Sh*t Robot (live set), Planningtorock (live set), Prinzhorn Dance School (live set, their US debut), Still Going, Nancy Whang, Tim Sweeney, Larry Gus, Dan Bodan and Marcus Marr. There are bound to be some surprises in store as well and seems likely to be a very memorable night.
Tickets are still available, but reportedly "dangerously close to selling out."
Tickets are also still available for the RBMA talk with James Murphy at NYU. Browse RBMA's full lineup for more amazing events.

YACHTat South Street Seaport, August 2010 (more by Chris La Putt)

YACHT will take part in an interesting event on August 31st at Body Actualized Center (143 Troutman in Bushwick):
Falling Into the Sun is an evening of heliocentric film, yoga, and experience.Claire Evans of Yacht commented on the event:Curated by Claire L. Evans, science writer and one-half of the conceptual pop group YACHT, Falling into the Sun is an aesthetic and corporeal experience pairing experimental films tracing the arc of the sun and its light across the Earth with a course of yogic sun salutations in order to fully immerse participants in the sensation of being pulled to the center of our solar system.
Come prepared to move ecstatically and celebrate the end of our hemisphere's summer!
"I've curated an experiential heliocentric film screening to which YACHT will play a live score. If you bring your body and mind in equal measure we'll do sun salutations to experimental visions of the sun's light as it traces across the sky. There will also be healing, meditation, cosmic DJs, projection mapping, installations, and a late-night afterparty that will follow the sun into the morning. Let's get weird!"Full details on the event which also includes performances from Bobby Birdman, Seabat, DJ Jan Woo, DJ Jay Simon, and Bookworms are below, and you can pick up your tickets now (as of today) and only in person at Body Actualized Center. The show is the day after YACHT's appearance at the Beekman Beer Garden (8/30, tickets).

Yacht at South Street Seaport, Aug 2010 (more by Chris La Putt)

Yacht will play what promises to be a wild night at the Beekman Beer Garden on August 30. (Hopefully not this kind of wild.) The duo will headline what's being called Full Moon (yes it's a full moon that night), a party that also features Modular's Sneaky Soundsystem, Gigamesh, Tesla Boy, and FIXED DJs JDH & Dave P. There will also be "dazzling visuals" and "fire dancers." That sounds exciting. Could be a fun way ring out the summer. Tickets for that show are on sale now, and the flyer is below.
In addition to the Full Moon party, Yacht will keep themselves busy in August with a few festival dates as well as a few shows opening for Hot Chip in the Pacific Northwest. All Yacht tour dates are listed below.

Young Magic at Mercury Lounge in 2011 (more by Jessica Amaya)

Young Magic picked up quite a bit of buzz in 2011 with a few singles and multiple tours with Youth Lagoon. They also played one of our CMJ Parties.
Now they're set to release their debut LP, Melt on February 14 via Carpark. The album will feature material from their singles, including "Night In The Ocean," "Slip Time", "Sparkly", and "You With Air." You can stream all four of those tracks below, along with the album artwork and tracklist, and the video for "Sparkly."
A while back Young Magic announced a record release show scheduled to take place in their current hometown of NYC on February 18 at Mercury Lounge. That show was cancelled after tickets went on sale but was re-announced this week and tickets are on sale now. The show is being opened by Heaven, who also open the Swervedriver show at Bowery Ballroom (3/31).
Young Magic were also initially billed as the openers for YACHT's upcoming tour but have since dropped off (2/26 Brooklyn show included).

DOWNLOAD: Idiot Glee - Trouble at the Dancehall (MP3)

Lexington, Kentucky's Idiot Glee is back in town, playing three shows this weekend: tonight (12/2) at Cake Shop with Devon Williams; tomorrow (12/3) at SUNY Purchase with Yacht and Dom; and then Sunday (12/4) at Cameo with Celestial Shores and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (the band, not the actor).
If you have yet to hear Idiot Glee's album Paddywhack, which takes '60s pop styles and smushes them like a half-remembered dream, you can download standout track "Trouble at the Dancehall" at the top of this post and stream the whole record at the bottom of this post. Says Tiny Mix Tapes:
There is a sense both of harmony in the broadest sense -- a textural and gently mouldering oneness -- as well as a charmingly naïve solitude that brings to mind the classic figure of the outsider artist. It's in the integration of these tendencies, the tender cultivation of tendrils connecting internal and external, the sacred and profane, that Friley's nightbloom shyly emerges and thrives. In addition to the album player below, you can also watch footage Bleary Eyed Brooklyn shot of Idiot Glee from one of their CMJ shows, as well as the "King of Baby Land" video.

Passion Pit

It's now Saturday and Fun Fun Fun Fest's second day is already underway and streaming on Pitchfork.
Yesterday, Friday, while BBG was holding down the black stage (which Danzig eventually played), Tim (who ran into Ryan Gosling more than once), was handling most of the other music the Austin fest had to offer. A quick selection of Tim's pictures from Friday continues below...

Four stages and more. Fun Fun Fun Fest truly is non-stop fun of many varieties. BBG spent most of Friday at the Black Stage (the one Danzig headlined). His pictures, including Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Murder City Devils, Russian Circles and the afterparty at Red 7, continue below...

Ryan Gosling & Terrence Malick @ Fun Fun Fun Fest Friday

Terrence Malick, the famously perfectionist film-maker who has released just five movies since 1973, is to shoot two new films back-to-back with all-star casts, according to the Hollywood Reporter."Did you see Ryan Gosling?" and "Ryan Gosling is here" were two popular phrases being spoken by attendees of Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin on Friday. Personally I saw Ryan when he was on stage with his film crew during YACHT's set. YACHT, along with Big Freedia and Neon Indian and some others, have reportedly agreed to be part of the movie (which also means we can expect another day of Gosling because Neon Indian plays today). Terrence and Rooney Mara were also on hand, and Ryan was also spotted at the afterparty Big Freedia played at the Mohawk later Friday night. The US director has named the projects Lawless and Knight of Cups - although his follow-up to the Palme d'Or-winning The Tree of Life, now in post-production, still lacks a title. In total, Malick watchers are likely to be treated to at least three new films over the next few years. Moreover, it has also been suggested he is planning a documentary companion piece to The Tree of Life.
Lawless is set to star Ryan Gosling, with support from Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennett. Bale will step up to the lead role in Knight of Cups, which also features Blanchett and Isabel Lucas. The third film, as yet untitled, is a romance starring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams, with support from Javier Bardem and Rachel Weisz. Its storyline is a closely guarded secret, as are those of Malick's two other films. [Guardian]

The Treasure Island Music Festival went down over two days on a small island in the San Francisco Bay, juggling two stages and acts that ranged from Death From Above 1979 to Cut Copy to St Vincent. The bands and sets were staggered so that changeovers allowed for the audience to see all of each band which, on day 1, included appearances from Death From Above 1979, Geographer, Aloe Blacc, The Naked & The Famous, Shabazz Palaces, YACHT (who play NYC in December), Battles, Dizzee Rascal, Chromeo, Buraka Som Sistema, Flying Lotus, Cut Copy, and Empire of The Sun...
"Sometimes a performance impresses you simply because of its natural and flawless flow. This was Chromeo on Saturday [10/15 at Treasure Island Music Festival]. The Montreal duo known for creating modern 80s-inspired electro-synth pop got one of the largest crowds of the day moving immediately as they opened with "Fancy Footwork." The hits kept coming with classics like "Don't Turn the Lights Off," "Bonafied Lovin," "Tenderoni" and set closer "Night by Night." Chromeo over the years has cemented themselves as one of the more fun and original acts in electronic music, Saturday was no disappointment whatsoever."Chromeo, who since played Moogfest, play their first of two shows at Terminal 5 tonight (11/4).

YACHT in Iceland

YACHT have a date with Austin at Fun Fun Fun Fest this weekend (where we have a show of our own), and will follow-up those dates with a stint on the West Coast with Yo Gabba Gabba! (!!). The Oregonians will then level the playing field by playing a string of East Coast dates a month later, including a stop back in NYC at Santos Party House on December 3rd. Tickets are on sale. YACHT's last NYC show was at Dekalb Market in Brooklyn in October.
YACHT was one of several bands who flew in to play sets at Iceland Airwaves last month. In fact they played it twice. Check out more pictures from both of their Iceland sets, and more tour dates, below...

The Rapture @ Webster Hall (photo by davidoliva)

"Embrace for a moment the idea that the most important band to emerge from early-2000s New York wasn't the Strokes but the Rapture. Sure, the Strokes went on to arenas, to overblown follow-up albums, to myth, all while the Rapture idled, then fizzled, then reconstituted, only to fizzle some more. The Rapture are now touring the United States. But that's because there was no way to recapture the specific high of the Rapture's breakthrough, particularly the 2002 single "House of Jealous Lovers," which was the sparkplug of New York's dance-punk revival and remains that scene's greatest document. But while many rock micromovements of the day were ingested by the mainstream, the Rapture stayed small, a champion of a world preoccupied with itself and the preoccupation of few others. It lived as subculture. It died as subculture. It remained a pulsing memory.
At least that's the best way to explain how almost a decade after those earliest hits the Rapture -- Luke Jenner, Gabriel Andruzzi, Vito Roccoforte -- is still able to play to a full Webster Hall, as it did on Friday night, in what was as much a celebration of a lapsed idea about New York as a vital incubator as it was of the band that was once its soundtrack."
[NY Times]
Speaking of DFA-signed bands, YACHT is playing a show at Brooklyn's Dekalb Market on October 9th. The market is a free place. The show is not free. More details below...

Descendents at FFFFest (more by Tim Griffin)

Much like last year, FYF Fest 2011 is poppin' off with some incredible bands, many of whom recently reunited. This year the LA fest will host a coveted Descendents appearance, a Death From Above 1979 show, Guided By Voices, another Kid Dynamite reunion, The Dead Milkmen, Explosions in the Sky, the return of The Weakerthans and many, many notable others. The band called it quits in 2000 and reunited in 2005 at CBGB and some other times too. I hope they schedule another NYC show, but it's just LA for now.
