Young Magic at Mercury Lounge in 2011 (more by Jessica Amaya)
Young Magic

Young Magic picked up quite a bit of buzz in 2011 with a few singles and multiple tours with Youth Lagoon. They also played one of our CMJ Parties.

Now they're set to release their debut LP, Melt on February 14 via Carpark. The album will feature material from their singles, including "Night In The Ocean," "Slip Time", "Sparkly", and "You With Air." You can stream all four of those tracks below, along with the album artwork and tracklist, and the video for "Sparkly."

A while back Young Magic announced a record release show scheduled to take place in their current hometown of NYC on February 18 at Mercury Lounge. That show was cancelled after tickets went on sale but was re-announced this week and tickets are on sale now. The show is being opened by Heaven, who also open the Swervedriver show at Bowery Ballroom (3/31).

Young Magic were also initially billed as the openers for YACHT's upcoming tour but have since dropped off (2/26 Brooklyn show included).

Video, streams, and album info below...

YACHT are one of the many public supporters of Esme Barrera, who was tragically murdered in her Austin home on New Year's. Don't forget that the Brooklyn benefit for Esme is happening this Thursday (1/12) at Big Snow Buffalo Lodge>

Idiot Glee

Lexington, Kentucky's Idiot Glee is back in town, playing three shows this weekend: tonight (12/2) at Cake Shop with Devon Williams; tomorrow (12/3) at SUNY Purchase with Yacht and Dom; and then Sunday (12/4) at Cameo with Celestial Shores and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (the band, not the actor).

If you have yet to hear Idiot Glee's album Paddywhack, which takes '60s pop styles and smushes them like a half-remembered dream, you can download standout track "Trouble at the Dancehall" at the top of this post and stream the whole record at the bottom of this post. Says Tiny Mix Tapes:

There is a sense both of harmony in the broadest sense -- a textural and gently mouldering oneness -- as well as a charmingly naïve solitude that brings to mind the classic figure of the outsider artist. It's in the integration of these tendencies, the tender cultivation of tendrils connecting internal and external, the sacred and profane, that Friley's nightbloom shyly emerges and thrives.
In addition to the album player below, you can also watch footage Bleary Eyed Brooklyn shot of Idiot Glee from one of their CMJ shows, as well as the "King of Baby Land" video.

YACHT @ Fun Fun Fun Fest
YACHT - Fun Fun Fun Fest 6 - Austin - 11/04/2011

YACHT recently played Fun Fun Fun Fest and went on a tour with Yo Gabba Gabba. We've got another set of pictures from their set at FFF Fest in this post.

At the beginning of December, YACHT will kick off another string of dates that includes the previously mentioned NYC show at Santos Party House on December 3 with Parenthetical Girls and Midnight Magic. Tickets are still available.

Earlier that day (12/3), both YACHT and Parenthetical Girls will perform at Purchase College for 'House Our Queer Youth: A Benefit for the Ali Forney Center,' whose mission is to "protect the LGBTQ youth from the harm of homelessness, and to support them in becoming safe and independent as they move from adolescence to adulthood." The show also includes sets by DOM, MEN, DJ/Rupture, Tearist, Advance Base, Sam Mickens, Hilly Eye, and others. Tickets for the all ages show which is open to the public, are on sale now.

Updated dates and more pics below...

Fun Fun Fest 2011 - Day 1

It's now Saturday and Fun Fun Fun Fest's second day is already underway and streaming on Pitchfork.

Yesterday, Friday, while BBG was holding down the black stage (which Danzig eventually played), Tim (who ran into Ryan Gosling more than once), was handling most of the other music the Austin fest had to offer. A quick selection of Tim's pictures from Friday continues below...

Four stages and more. Fun Fun Fun Fest truly is non-stop fun of many varieties. BBG spent most of Friday at the Black Stage (the one Danzig headlined). His pictures, including Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Murder City Devils, Russian Circles and the afterparty at Red 7, continue below...

Ryan Gosling & Terrence Malick @ Fun Fun Fun Fest Friday
Fun Fun Fest 2011 - Day 1

Terrence Malick, the famously perfectionist film-maker who has released just five movies since 1973, is to shoot two new films back-to-back with all-star casts, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The US director has named the projects Lawless and Knight of Cups - although his follow-up to the Palme d'Or-winning The Tree of Life, now in post-production, still lacks a title. In total, Malick watchers are likely to be treated to at least three new films over the next few years. Moreover, it has also been suggested he is planning a documentary companion piece to The Tree of Life.

Lawless is set to star Ryan Gosling, with support from Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennett. Bale will step up to the lead role in Knight of Cups, which also features Blanchett and Isabel Lucas. The third film, as yet untitled, is a romance starring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams, with support from Javier Bardem and Rachel Weisz. Its storyline is a closely guarded secret, as are those of Malick's two other films. [Guardian]

"Did you see Ryan Gosling?" and "Ryan Gosling is here" were two popular phrases being spoken by attendees of Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin on Friday. Personally I saw Ryan when he was on stage with his film crew during YACHT's set. YACHT, along with Big Freedia and Neon Indian and some others, have reportedly agreed to be part of the movie (which also means we can expect another day of Gosling because Neon Indian plays today). Terrence and Rooney Mara were also on hand, and Ryan was also spotted at the afterparty Big Freedia played at the Mohawk later Friday night.

The above shot is one Tim snapped (during YACHT I think). Much more at http://ryangoslingatfunfunfunfest.tumblr.com/.
And one more by Tim below...

Aloe Blacc

The Treasure Island Music Festival went down over two days on a small island in the San Francisco Bay, juggling two stages and acts that ranged from Death From Above 1979 to Cut Copy to St Vincent. The bands and sets were staggered so that changeovers allowed for the audience to see all of each band which, on day 1, included appearances from Death From Above 1979, Geographer, Aloe Blacc, The Naked & The Famous, Shabazz Palaces, YACHT (who play NYC in December), Battles, Dizzee Rascal, Chromeo, Buraka Som Sistema, Flying Lotus, Cut Copy, and Empire of The Sun...

"Sometimes a performance impresses you simply because of its natural and flawless flow. This was Chromeo on Saturday [10/15 at Treasure Island Music Festival]. The Montreal duo known for creating modern 80s-inspired electro-synth pop got one of the largest crowds of the day moving immediately as they opened with "Fancy Footwork." The hits kept coming with classics like "Don't Turn the Lights Off," "Bonafied Lovin," "Tenderoni" and set closer "Night by Night." Chromeo over the years has cemented themselves as one of the more fun and original acts in electronic music, Saturday was no disappointment whatsoever."
-[SF Station on the highlights at TIMF]
Chromeo, who since played Moogfest, play their first of two shows at Terminal 5 tonight (11/4).

Belated pictures from day 1 of the Treasure Island Music Festival (which happened on 10/15) continue, more YACHT and Chromeo included, below...

YACHT in Iceland
YACHT

YACHT have a date with Austin at Fun Fun Fun Fest this weekend (where we have a show of our own), and will follow-up those dates with a stint on the West Coast with Yo Gabba Gabba! (!!). The Oregonians will then level the playing field by playing a string of East Coast dates a month later, including a stop back in NYC at Santos Party House on December 3rd. Tickets are on sale. YACHT's last NYC show was at Dekalb Market in Brooklyn in October.

YACHT was one of several bands who flew in to play sets at Iceland Airwaves last month. In fact they played it twice. Check out more pictures from both of their Iceland sets, and more tour dates, below...

The Rapture @ Webster Hall (photo by davidoliva)
Rapture

"Embrace for a moment the idea that the most important band to emerge from early-2000s New York wasn't the Strokes but the Rapture. Sure, the Strokes went on to arenas, to overblown follow-up albums, to myth, all while the Rapture idled, then fizzled, then reconstituted, only to fizzle some more.

But that's because there was no way to recapture the specific high of the Rapture's breakthrough, particularly the 2002 single "House of Jealous Lovers," which was the sparkplug of New York's dance-punk revival and remains that scene's greatest document. But while many rock micromovements of the day were ingested by the mainstream, the Rapture stayed small, a champion of a world preoccupied with itself and the preoccupation of few others. It lived as subculture. It died as subculture. It remained a pulsing memory.

At least that's the best way to explain how almost a decade after those earliest hits the Rapture -- Luke Jenner, Gabriel Andruzzi, Vito Roccoforte -- is still able to play to a full Webster Hall, as it did on Friday night, in what was as much a celebration of a lapsed idea about New York as a vital incubator as it was of the band that was once its soundtrack."
[NY Times]

The Rapture are now touring the United States.

Speaking of DFA-signed bands, YACHT is playing a show at Brooklyn's Dekalb Market on October 9th. The market is a free place. The show is not free. More details below...

Descendents at FFFFest (more by Tim Griffin)
Descendents

Much like last year, FYF Fest 2011 is poppin' off with some incredible bands, many of whom recently reunited. This year the LA fest will host a coveted Descendents appearance, a Death From Above 1979 show, Guided By Voices, another Kid Dynamite reunion, The Dead Milkmen, Explosions in the Sky, the return of The Weakerthans and many, many notable others. Full lineup is below. The show goes down at 1st and Main in downtown Los Angeles on September 3rd. Tickets are on sale.

Future Islands plays FYF Fest and plays Death By Audio in Brooklyn TONIGHT (6/28).

For Kid Dynamite, which features members of Lifetime, Paint it Black and None More Black, the reunion is their first since re-emerging for This is Hardcore last year with Ink & Dagger. The band called it quits in 2000 and reunited in 2005 at CBGB and some other times too. I hope they schedule another NYC show, but it's just LA for now.

This is Hardcore THIS YEAR features an appearance from Ressurection, which also featured Dan Yemin on guitar. Tickets for This is Hardcore 2011, taking place in Philly's Starlight Ballroom, is mostly sold-out, with tickets for the Sunday show still available.

The Descendents appearance at FYFest is one of several dates scheduled for the reunited band, NYC's Roseland, Chicago Riot Fest, and Philly's Riot Fest included. Tickets are still available for the 9/23 Roseland show.

Mister Heavenly will hit the road for a string of dates on the West Coast leading up to FYF Fest. Check out their full tour schedule below, and look for their new LP Out of Love on 8/16 via Sub Pop. Check out "Pineapple Girl" from that record above.

The Death From Above 1979 appearance is one of several slated for the band in the coming months, including a 7/22 appearance at Williamsburg Waterfront. Tickets are still available OR, you can try your hand by winning a pair at our Facebook. The full set of DFA1979 dates are below.

The Weakerthans have a few other dates slated for Europe and Canada in the coming months. Hopefully they add more US dates too. All dates for now are listed below.

A few bands on the FYFest lineup (namely, Cults, Off!, and No Age) will also appear in NYC at the House of Vans this summer, and for FREE. The FYF-presented House of Vans series of shows starts this Thursday (6/30). You just have to RSVP to get in (and maybe get there early).

All Weakerthans, DFA1979, and Mister Heavenly dates, some video, and the full FYF Fest lineup is below.

Yacht

After watching Deervana at Brooklyn Bowl on Sunday (6/19), I ran over to Music Hall of Williamsburg to catch whatever I could of YACHT's set, which had already begun. I ended up being able to see the last 45 minutes or so of the Northside Festival show. They played a ton of material off the new album which vocalist Claire Evans mentioned was not out yet (it came out today, June 21) but admitted that many of us had probably heard it already. Being that she was very right in her assumption, the new material made for some of the most exciting moments of the night.

It was my first time seeing YACHT, and given that I hadn't heard too much about their live show, I wasn't expecting anything like the performance they gave. Not only was the music spot on, but the band's image really added to the entire show. Claire provocatively pranced around stage in all white with a white microphone/mic cable, while the rest of the band, Bobby Birdman included, stayed a bit stiller at their instruments in Devo-esque matching suits. On the few songs that Jona Bechtolt sang lead vocals, he was actually as animated as Claire, but in a manner that was more goofy than sexy. Jona jumped into the crowd where he sang the majority of one number. Both frontpeople had choreographed complementary dance moves, including one which crossed between the macarena and hear no evil/see no evil/speak no evil.

Midnight Magic and The Miracles Club both opened the show, but I obviously missed them, as did Jessica who was at Deervana too. More pictures of YACHT below...

Deervana @ SXSW 2011 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Deervana

Brooklyn's Northside Festival concludes today (Sunday, 6/19). If you're reading this, finish quickly and get yourself to one of three day shows that are underway.

The most in-demand show at the Northside Festival Sunday night is amazingly a tribute band (one I am also fond of). Deer Tick playing all Nirvana songs as Deervana proved themselves worthy at SXSW and again during a late-night surprise set at Bonnaroo. The show they're playing at Brooklyn Bowl tonight sold out long ago, so if you're planning on getting in with your badge, get there early. WATERS opens the show.

Your dancier alternative is the DFA showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg featuring a headlining set by YACHT whose last NYC show was at the bigger Webster Hall. The stacked bill also includes the Cut Copy-approved The Miracles Club and NYC disco staples Midnight Magic. Tickets are still on sale if you don't have a badge.

Other places to get some value out of your Northside Badge tonight include Bruar Falls where members of Love is All, Architecture in Helsinki & The Lucksmiths are all on the bill, and Coco66 which will have bands featuring members of Lighting Bolt and Cibo Matto. Diamond Rings and Porcelain Raft play a show at Europa with Bell. NYC Taper & Pop Tarts team up for a 2-stage show at Public Assembly that if you miss you can probably download later. After taking a night off, St Cecilia's Church hosts one final show with Mount Eerie, Nicholas Krgovich (of No Kids), and Wyrd Visions (check out the pics from the Atlas Sound show there on the first night). 285 Kent kicks off at 8:30pm with a set by New Moods and ends with a headlining 11:30pm set by Sun Airway. Various members of Das Racist and their associates play in between. The full Northside schedule is at Northside's site.

MFNW

Here is the initial lineup for Willamette Week's MusicfestNW, scheduled for Sept. 7-11, 2011 in Portland, Oregon, and it's pretty great. The multi-venue fest includes big outdoor performances by Band of Horses (Sunday, Sept. 11), Explosions in the Sky (Saturday, Sept. 10), and Iron & Wine (Friday, Sept. 9), in addition to shows with everyone from Archers of Loaf to Big Freedia to Butthole Surfers to Neurosis. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 3rd. Check out the full list below...

The Rapture
Rapture

"Almost 10 years after the release of House Of Jealous Lovers, The Rapture will be coming back home to DFA. Their new album The Grace Of Your Love drops on September 6 in the US, September 5 in Europe. We'll be sure to keep you posted." - DfA Records
In other DFA news, YACHT and Midnight Magic and The Miracles Club will play the DFA Northside Festival showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg on June 19. Tickets are on sale now for the gig that is much smaller than YACHT's last headlining NYC show.

As mentioned, Midnight Magic also open for Cut Copy at Prospect Park on August 11. Tickets are still on sale for that too.

Like the recently-announced Seapony and Thee Oh Sees shows, you can also try and get in to YACHT with a Nothside Festival badge. All of these shows are part of the latest round of Northside Festival lineup additions. The full list of bands is below...

Holy Ghost

LCD Soundsystem may be done but DFA Records still has a strong presence, especially lately, and especially Saturday night in NYC when Free Energy played Glasslands while Holy Ghost! headlined a sold out show at Music Hall of Williamsburg where they were joined by Nancy Whang on vocals and surprise guest Dave 1 from Chromeo on guitar. Holy Ghost's setlist and some videos are below. Later in the night Nancy headed to Webster Hall to hang with Classixx while Juan Maclean and friends DJ'd at Cameo.

Holy Ghost! recently released a video for "Wait & See" which stars the duo's actual fathers. Check that out below. Holy Ghost! are on the lineup of the HARD Summer Fest happening in LA on August 6th, as are DFA artists Shit Robot, Special Disco Version (James and Pat), and Still Going. Shit Robot also recently released a new video for "Losing My Patience" which features Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip. Watch that below.

DFA DJ Justin Miller is DJing at Hell's Kitchen on Tuesday night (5/3). NSFW flyer HERE. Matt Thornley DJ's with Midnight Magic at Public Assembly on Thursday.

Earlier last week, the DFA-signed YACHT came through town for their own big headlining show which was at Webster Hall with Light Asylum. A set of pictures from that show are also in this post and they continue with the other stuff, below...

YACHT at Coachella 2011 (more)
Yacht

The previously discussed YACHT tour continues until middle May, and the crew is poised to tear down Webster Hall with Light Asylum and Bobby Birdman in NYC tonight (4/27). Tickets are still available, or you can try your luck at winning one of three pairs of tickets we're giving away! Details on how are at the bottom of this post.

YACHT recently made a remix of the Classixx track "Into The Valley" (featuring Karl Dixon) for Green Label Sound (download/stream it below), and the LA production and DJ duo will be in NYC this week and at Webster Hall too. Just two days from today (on 4/29), Classixx will play as part of the Girls & Boys party with Nancy Whang (of Holy Ghost!, the Juan Maclean, and the now defunct LCD Soundsystem) and guests. Tickets are still available and doors open at 10PM.

YACHT @ Coachella - 4/15/2011
Yacht
Yacht

As the song says, "the Yacht is on fire" (they actually see "the Earth is on fire - see below) (download new track "Dystopia" above). YACHT, long past the days of Jona running around the stage by himself with an iPod, gave an explosive performance on Friday in Coachella's Mojave Tent. Duo Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans look and sound like pros as they trade off vocals and instruments while backed by a very able band. Jona jams on guitar and even sometimes sits on the drums as Claire keeps the front rows hypnotized with her dancing, outfit and vocals. YACHT the dance band prove that DFA ("Long Live LCD Soundsystem," Jona proclaimed from the Coachella stage) is right where they belong. Their new album Shangri-La will be released by the label on June 21st ("Dystopia" included).

UPDATE: Despite it at first sounding like like they are singing "the yacht is on fire" in "Dystopia" (lyrics sites agree), it actually says "the Earth is on fire" (as the title of the song implies it would, and now that I know that, it actually does sound like "Earth").

Meanwhile, YACHT will be out on the road through May 14th. Light Asylum joins the tour as opener on April 25th. Both bands play Webster Hall in NYC on April 27th. YACHT band member and collaborator Bobby Birdman also plays an opening set at that show. Tickets for what might be YACHT's biggest NYC headlining show yet (or maybe the Seaport was), are on sale.
