Orchestra of Spheres
As has become a tradition, one of CMJ's 2014 kickoff events is the New Zealand artists showcase on October 21 at The Studio at Webster Hall (it used to happen at Le Poisson Rouge) with PopStrangers, Orchestra of the Spheres, DOPRAH, and Chelsea Jade. Beverages will be supplied by Spy Valley Wines with snacks by Dub Pies. Tickets are on sale now or you can get in with your CMJ badge. You can stream a mix with all four artists, below.
CMJ will be part of a U.S. tour for Wellington's Orchestra of the Spheres whose second album, Vibration Animal Sex Brain Music, came out last year via Fire. The band incorporate nervy new wave and motorik rhythms into their psych-pop sound and you can watch the new video for single "2,000,000 Years" and a Spotify stream of the album, below. In addition to the NZ showcase, Orchestra of Spheres will also play the Bird Dog showcase at Pianos on October 25 with Ski Lodge, Beverly, Splashh, The Love Supreme, Native America and Roman a Clef. Tickets are on sale now, and all tour dates are listed below.
Christchurch duo DOPRAH released their debut EP this past summer and you can check out a video for "Stranger People" below. They'll also play Oct 23 at Radio Bushwick, with SEOUL, Fort Lean, The Great Void, Rioux, Tomboy, YAWN, and Zula.
Formerly known as Watercolours, Chelsea Jade released the Portals EP in 2012 and a remix EP last year. She just released a new single, "Night Swimmer," which you can check out via its video below. The NZ showcase is her only CMJ appearance announced so far.

Austria is not a huge country and hasn't had that many famous musicians (Mozart, Falco, Belphagor...) but that hasn't stopped Vienna's Sex Jams from pursuing their dream of making shouty-punky rock for all to hear. A cassette compilation of the group's Austrian-released music, titled Hits, will be out next month via Old Flame which will be their first US release. We've got the premiere of "Queens Club" from it in this post.
Sex Jams are in NYC as we speak, kicking off a string of dates with Baltimore duo Ed Schrader's Music Beat. Both bands, along with Honne Wells, play tonight (10/1) at Cake Shop and Death by Audio on Friday (10/3) with White Rope on that show as well.
They'll be back in NYC for CMJ, including the Old Flame showcase at Cake Shop on October 25 with Potty Mouth, Dead Stars, YAWN, Girlpool, Girl Tears and more TBA. All dates are listed, plus the track stream and other from the cassette, below...

"Last night Yawn opened for Yuck. Indie rock has officially become an Abbott and Costello routine." - Simon Vozick-Levinson
"Had this awesome dream where Tame Impala covered Angel by Massive Attack. No wait...that actually happened." - Peter Sununu
Tame Impala @ Webster Hall
Tame Impala and Yuck and less-advertised opener Yawn brought their tour to a sold out Webster Hall in NYC last night (4/25). It was the headliner's only NYC show this time around, though Yuck will be back soon to headline their own show at Bowery Ballroom on May 27th. Tickets are still on sale for that. Oh, AND Yuck play a free in-store at Other Music TONIGHT.
About last night...
"[Tame Impala] had 9 flat screen monitors behind them that featured a light show that responded to the music. As you can imagine, it was a pychedelic delight. Aside from "I Don't Really Mind," Tame Impala played the entire "Innerspeaker" album as well as a cover of Massive Attack's "Angel." They even dug deep and played "Skeleton Tiger" and "Half Full Glass of Wine" off their debut EP (which is quite hard to find in the United States). The set was just about 70 minutes long and it was awesome." [According to G]The full setlist and more pictures from the whole show, below...
