The xx in Tulum - 12/31/13 (via @hickduarte)
There were tons of New Year's Eve shows here in NYC, as well as around the rest of the country, and down in Mexico, the Young Turks label threw a party on the beach in popular tourist site Tulum (famous, among other things, for its ruins). It literally went all night, kicking off with some of the label's DJs at 8 PM, followed by Sampha, John Talabot, Chairlift, The xx, Grimes, SBTRKT, Koreless, Pional, Four Tet and others playing past 11 AM New Year's Day.
During SBTRKT's set, he revealed an unreleased Jessie Ware collaboration, "Runaway." You can stream that, along with a video featuring clips of multiple sets from the show, and a few more pics, below...

Portland, OR hardcore band Young Turks (not to be confused with the British record label) are set to return with the Where I Rise EP, the followup to their similarly titled 2012 debut full length Where I Lie. The band makes a similar kind of post-millennium melodic hardcore to bands like Paint It Black, Modern Life Is War, and The Hope Conspiracy, and they've got an attitude too. Opening track, "Territo(royally) Pissed" begins with vocalist Matt Koenig declaring "I don't give a shit, your music means nothing, your actions speak even less" over the band's furious hardcore that rarely (if ever) has time for interludes, breakdowns, or anything but full-speed attack.
The EP was mixed by Alex Estrada (who produced both Joyce Manor albums and engineered the first Touche Amore LP) and it will be out next week (11/5) via Animal Style Records. You won't have to wait until then to hear it though, because a stream of the full EP premieres in this post. Check it out below.

Beggars Group-affiliated label Young Turks is throwing its first New Year's Eve party in Mexico this year. The party happens on December 31 in Tulum with sets from Grimes, Four Tet, The xx, John Talabot, Pional, Koreless, Chairlift, Sampha, Tasker, and more TBA. Tickets for the show are on sale now.
The Fest is back for round 11 (!) adding bands from across the spectrum of punk rock for the multi-day Gainesville, Florida extravaganza. The Fest announced its initial lineup earlier this month but has doubled that number, bringing the total tally to a whopping 217, and there are more to go! The lineup includes Lagwagon, Naked Raygun, Baroness, Red Fang, Off with Their Heads, Torche, Valient Thorr, 7 Seconds, F.Y.P., Braid, Titus Andronicus, Toys That Kill, Underground Railroad to Candyland, Frank Turner and many more (see below). Tickets are now on sale (and sold out quick last year).
Full lineup is below, expect to see some surprises at The Fest as well; Sleepytime Trio reunited there last year.
Sampha & Jessie Ware
SBTRKT released his debut and self-titled LP this week (6/28) in the US and a day earlier (6/27) in the UK. We've talked about the Little Dragon-featuring single "Wildfire" with vocals from Yukimi, but she isn't the only person contributing vocals to the album, far from it. Roses Gabor contributes vocals to the song "Pharoahs" and most of the album's vocals are performed by SBTRKT's Young Turks labelmates Jessie Ware and Sampha, who often collaborate with each other.
Jessie Ware and Sampha recorded the track "Valentine" together for Valentine's Day which they included on a Valentine's Day mixtape that they made for Fader. Check out the music video for that song, along with a live video of Jessie Ware and Sampha performing the song, and another of them performing a cover of Bobby Caldwell's "What you Won't Do for Love", below.
Jessie Ware also recently contributed vocals to another UK dubstep producer, Joker, for the single "The Vision," which was Joker's first release on 4AD. Listen below.
SBTRKT heads to North America soon for three NY dates, and for a just-added one in Toronto. Most interesting about the Canada date is that it advertises Sampha on the bill. Hopefully that means Sampha is also the "guest vocalist" appearing at PS1 on July 9th (one day later) too.
