ZZ Top at The Paramount in 2013 (more by Greg Cristman)
Billy Gibbons

Iconic boogie rockers ZZ Top will be on tour next year now that bassist Dusty Hill is recovered from a hip injury that caused the band's tour with Jeff Beck to be cut short this past August (including a show at Jones Beach). A few of the dates with Beck have been rescheduled, but not Jones Beach. The closest the dates come to NYC is Red Bank, NJ's Count Basie Theatre on March 11 (tickets) and Kingston, NY's Ulster Performing Arts Center on March 13 (tickets).

In related news, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons is one of a slew of classic rock veterans are coming together to support, well, veterans. The third annual edition of Wall Street Rocks also features bringing Warren Haynes from Allman Brothers, John Popper from Blues TravelerLate Night with David Letterman band members Will Lee and Anton Fig  and other "all-star musicians" for a show to benefit war veterans at the Highline Ballroom on November 10. Tickets for the show are on sale now (just keep in mind that the money is going to a good cause when checking out those prices).

Billy Gibbons is also playing Brooklyn Bowl on November 11, the day after the veteran's benefit. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (10/3) at 10 AM.

While Warren Haynes may be playing in November, Allman Brothers are calling it quits at the end of October. The band's final shows are happening at Beacon Theatre on October 21-28. Tickets for all of the Beacon shows except the 24th are already sold out. There are also Allman Bros afterparties at BB King's on October 24 and October 25, the latter of which features Allman Bros drummer Jaimoe's Jasssz Band.

All ZZ Top dates are listed below...

ZZ Top @ The Paramount, 11/172013
ìZZ

Boogie blues legends ZZ Top wrapped up a fall tour earlier this month, including a few NY-area shows, with two nights at The Paramount in Long Island (11/16 & 11/17). At the 11/17 show, in addition to hits like "La Grange," "Tush" and "Sharp Dressed Man," the trio also covered Elvis' "Jailhouse Rock" and Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady." Pictures from that show are in this post, including ones of opening band The Slim Kings. Dig those tailpipe mike stands.

ZZ Top have some holiday shows lined up in the South and those dates are listed below. Meanwhile, frontman Billy Gibbons will be playing NYC at City Winery on December 18. The night is billed as "Billy Gibbons & Friends" and will feature Will Lee and Anton Fig (of David Letterman's house band) and others. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

More pics and the setlist from the Paramount show, as well as ZZ Top's upcoming tour schedule, below...

Bonnaroo 2013, Day 2
Bonnaroo 2013, Day 2
Bonnaroo 2013, Day 2

Depsite a couple cancelations (Mumford, Earl Sweatshirt), Bonnaroo 2013 had more than enough starpower to keep the masses entertained throughout the 2013 edition which happened over the weekend. Friday (6/14) featured one of the most famous musicians in the world, Paul McCartney, plus sets from ZZ Top, The Wu-Tang Clan, Wilco, Of Monsters and Men, Passion Pit, Jim James, Grizzly Bear, The xx, Big K.R.I.T. and loads more. Pictures of day 2 are in this post.

We missed Animal Collective (they went on at 2 AM), but you can check out a video of Police Academy's human sound fx machine Michael Winslow joining them on stage below. Besides the main attractions, there were other cool things too, including Johnny Fritz (aka Johnny Corndawg) on the smaller Sonic stage, comedy throughout the day, and the big hip hop superjam with Schoolboy Q, RZA, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Solange, and more.

Pictures from Day 1 are HERE with more on the way. More pictures from Friday below...

Big muff superfuzz: ZZ Top @ Bergen PAC, 5/14/2013
ZZ Top

Legendary, bearded, and legendarily bearded (except for the drummer, whose name is Beard) Texas hard rock trio ZZ Top, who will be at Bonnaroo this year, played Bergen Performing Arts Center in NJ last night (May 14), part of a larger ongoing tour for the band that puts them in Westbury NY for a sold-out show at Theater at Westbury tonight. Pictures from their show are in this post.

If you missed it, we also recently caught Billy Gibbons back with his old band Moving Sidewalks in Austin and NYC.

The ZZ Top shows are in celebration of the band's massive legacy, compiled into a single, similarly massive chunk -- a 10-disc collection of their studio albums due on June 10:

The set, including the albums initially released on the London label as well as the string of Warner Bros. hits that followed, includes ZZ Top's First Album (1971), Rio Grande Mud (1972), Tres Hombres (1973), Fandango! (1975)*, Tejas (1976), Degüello (1979), El Loco (1981), Eliminator (1983), Afterburner (1985) and Recycler (1990). Each album is presented in a wallet sleeve that faithfully reproduces the original artwork, including the gatefold designs used for Tres Hombres and Tejas. The set presents, for the first time on CD, the original LP mixes for: ZZ Top's First Album, Rio Grande Mud and Tejas that have long been on the wish lists of the band's most fervent fans.
Look for that at a merch table or retailer near you, and listen for songs from it at the dates listed, along with more pics from Bergen PAC, below...

Austin Psych Fest Day 1 - 4/26/2013
Austin Psych Fest Day 1 - 4/26/2013

Sunday was also about giving credence to the forbears of pysch-rock. Roky Erikson put on an energetic show to a loving and enthusiastic audience. The main attraction, and headliners for the fest, were the Moving Sidewalks featuring Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Any time one can catch Gibbons, it's worth paying attention, but unfortunately it seemed like some members of his old band hadn't played since the 1960s. Gibbons's familiar growl and deft guitar work did make up for most of it.

...

Sweden's Goat had the unfortunate slot coinciding with the second half of the Black Angels, but neither the crowd or the band seemed to notice. Dressed as gypsy druids, the band played a sort of jam-pysch rock with insane energy. The band wore masks, but the two female leads stole the show, euphorically jumping and singing throughout each song. [Austinist]

Austin Psych Fest wrapped up its 2013 festival at its new home of Carson Creek Ranch last Sunday (4/28). The third, and final, day of the fest included sets by Billy Gibbons' pre-ZZ Top band Moving Sidewalks, Swedish psych freakout group Goat, former 13th Floor Elevators frontman Roky Erickson, The Black Angels, Black Angels collaborator/tourmate Rishi Dhir's project Elephant Stone, Clinic, King Khan & BBQ, White Fence, Deap Vally and more.

In case you haven't been keeping up with our Psych Fest coverage, pictures of day 1 are HERE and pictures of day 2 are HERE. More of day 3 below...

Billy Gibbons w/ Moving Sidewalks, 3/30/2013
Moving Sidewalks

That time and place, specifically, was 1967 to 1969, in Houston. The Moving Sidewalks -- the guitarist Billy Gibbons, the organist Tom Moore, the bassist Don Summers, the drummer Dan Mitchell -- learned from other great Texas bands like the 13th Floor Elevators from Austin, the Sir Douglas Quintet from San Antonio and the Zakary Thaks from Corpus Christi; they likely absorbed the thuggish pop stomp of the Seeds, from Los Angeles, and the aggressive and pop-savvy blues of Freddie King; and, before breaking up, they completely devoured, and got essentially lost in, the sound and style of the Jimi Hendrix Experience....

For the archaeologists of vinyl the Moving Sidewalks re-enacted most of its artifacts: the early single "99th Floor," with a brisk, go-go-dancer vibe, a local hit in Houston in 1967; a slow, exaggeratedly heavy, funny arrangement of the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand"; and songs from its Hendrix-inspired album, "Flash," messier and more soulful, which was released a little after tthe band split up and consequently never went anywhere. -[NY Times]

For many, the idea of a Moving Sidewalks reunion seemed far-fetched and ridiculous, what with Billy Gibbons moving on to (much) bigger things as a member of ZZ Top. Yet fans of the '60s psych band from Texas were treated to a minor miracle Saturday night at BB King's (3/30) when the band joined Headless Horsemen for a rare one-off appearance. No other East Coast shows are on the docket, but Moving Sidewalks will be playing Austin Psych Fest later this month. Pictures and setlist are below.

Moving Sidewalks

Billy Gibbons's psychedelic project from before his ZZ Top days, The Moving Sidewalks, have reunited and will play two shows in celebration of a new discography due on Rockbeat Records. For the unaware, their history is as follows:

Gibbons founded the Texas psychedelic group in the mid-1960s and quickly drew a large following, especially in the Houston "teen scene". They recorded several singles and one full-length album, Flash. Their single "99th Floor" was a hit and topped the charts at No. 1 in Houston for six weeks. The success of this record led the Sidewalks to sign with Wand Records which then released "Need Me" which also became a Top 10 Hit. The group was asked to open for many rock tours, including Jimi Hendrix and The Doors.

After Tom Moore and Don Summers were drafted into the United States Army, Gibbons and Mitchell added Lanier Greig and formed the original ZZ Top.-[Wiki]

Those two select dates include the previously discussed Austin Psych Fest appearance and NYC on March 30 at BB Kings with The Headless Horsemen (tickets).

A full stream of the band's lone LP, Flash, is below.

The Virgin Mobile FreeFest returns to Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD on October 6 with a lineup that includes Jack White, Skrillex, M83, Nas, ZZ Top, Santigold, Alabama Shakes, Ben Folds Five, The Dismemberment Plan, Allen Stone, Trampled by Turtles, Portugal. The Man, Das Racist, Future Islands and Justin Jones. There is also a "Dance Forest" that will feature Above & Beyond, Porter & Zedd (Back to Back), Thomas Gold, Nervo, Alvin Risk and Penguin Prison, with others to be announced.

As the name of the show implies tickets to the FreeFest are free and will be available via ticketfly.com on Friday, August 24 at noon. A presale on August 23 will be announced via their Twitter. There are also some not-free "freemium" packages to buy that include early admission to the festival grounds, a donation to charity and other incentives. Details on that are here.

Speaking of The Dismemberment Plan, the indie rock vets began playing shows again in 2011 and at their Baltimore show on Friday (8/10), they played multiple new songs! Hopefully this means we'll be getting a new D-Plan album (it'd be the first since 2001's Change). Check out videos of the new songs played at the Baltimore show below.

ZZ Top

While many designers tagged trendier (see younger) performers to appear at their Fashion Week soirees, many of which happened the day before for Fashion's Night Out, John Varvatos and show curator/drummer Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver, Guns N' Roses) stayed true to the spirit of the Bowery store located where CBGB once stood, picking a lineup that would make Wayne and Garth tremble with a lack of self worth (Mike Meyers sitting on the side of the stage with a giddy grin would seem to confirm that).

Alejandro Escovedo performed first on Saturday night (9/11), churning out garage crunch with no less than 4 guitarists blazing on the Varvatos store's small stage. Ian Hunter (lead singer of Mott the Hopple) followed and was joined by Escovedo for a performance of glam cornerstone anthem "All The Young Dudes."

To break up the boys club, former Runaways singer Cherie Currie, one of rock's more underappreciated female frontwomen, came on next. Currie performed "Cherry Bomb," the Runaways' ode to young female rebellion, with a still palpable sense of angst, proving at the same time you're never too old to stop flaunting sex appeal (and to fit into leather corsets).

The Darling Stilettos
Darling Stilettos

Taking a cue from the icon that preceded them, the night's youngest performers, The Darling Stilettos (think rock's answer to the Pussycat Dolls), danced and felt each other up in all the right places while screaming classic rock covers (and one original tune) like over-sexualized banshees.

There were new groups from established rockers as well. New York icon Jessie Malin performed with his latest musical collective The St. Marks Social, and recently formed rock super group Black Country Communion, consisting of former Deep Purple frontman/bassist Glenn Hughes, blues guitar god Joe Bonamassa, and prodigal son Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin, Foreigner) gave a sneak preview of some of the heavy tracks from their upcoming self-titled debut.

After a brief pause, Los Angeles superstar cover band Camp Freddy settled in as the house band for the remainder of the show, welcoming on stage a revolving door of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alumni as the evening catapulted upward in intensity. Some played covers, like ZZ Top (who were in town to play two nights at Beacon Theatre) evoking the spirit of Hendrix with "Foxy Lady" and Perry Farrell aggressively launching into the audience during "Sympathy for the Devil." Others did their own songs, like MC5's outspoken guitarist Wayne Kramer urging the crowd on during "Kick Out the Jams" with help from Handsome Dick Manitoba, or Alice Cooper being diabolically stylish while performing "I'm 18" and "School's Out."

By the time Farrell ended the night with Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song," the Varvatos store crowd had finally reached the feverish level of turbulence one would expect for such a night. In fact the performers throughout the night consistently displayed more energy than the predominantly younger audience. For an event full of aging rockers, it really just felt like a riotous gathering of all the young dudes.

The crowd was full of familiar faces as well. Chris Brown, Jimmy Kimmel, Rachael Ray, and Matt Pinfield were among those getting their picture taken on the red carpet and mingling with the fashioned-out crowd. Iggy Pop (who played Don Hill's the night before) and Robert Plant (who played Bowery Ballroom the next day) were nowhere in sight though. More pictures and some videos from the whole night below...

Rumored performers include Iggy Pop and (thanks John) Robert Plant (who plays Bowery Ballroom Sunday).

Who else is playing fashion week parties tonight?

The Apollo Theater's Spring benefit is taking place at The Apollo on June 14th. Bruce Springsteen & Tom Morello @ MSG (BMoreSweet)
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

U2 closed the second night of the MSG Rock & Roll Hall of Fame shows on October 30th. At the first (10/29), it was Bruce Springsteen & Billy Joel (before one big group sing on Jackie Wilson's "Higher and Higher")...

After "Badlands" much of the drained audience began leaving and then rushed back to their seats when Billy Joel sat down at the piano and launched into "You May Be Right," "Only The Good Die Young" and "New York State Of Mind." (The pair were uniting the kindred spirits of New Jersey and Long Island, Springsteen explained.) "Higher and Higher" wrapped up the night. The official set list had the show ending at 11:36:55 (yes, they thought they had it down to the exact second), but the final notes rang out at 1:31 a.m. Six straight hours of music, and that was just the first of two nights. [Rolling Stone]
Bruce was actually there both nights (one of many possibly "filling in" for Eric Clapton, who canceled last minute on the second). Those in attendence on the 30th got to see U2, Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith sing together on "Because the Night." (And U2 + Mick Jagger (another unannounced guest) + Fergie + Will.i.am sing "Gimme Shelter"...). Ray Davies, Lou Reed, and Ozzy Osbourne all performed with Metallica. Many played with Stevie Wonder. Full setlists below.

HBO will be airing four hours of highlights on Thanksgiving weekend.
(November 29th at 8PM ET).

Bruce's current tour wraps up November 22nd in Buffalo. He was at Giants Stadium earlier this fall, playing the last concerts ever there. U2 also played the venue for two nights in September, and will be back in Jersey in 2010 as part of their just-announced tour.

Set lists for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame shows are below...

ZZ Top

It is with great regret that AEROSMITH are canceling the remainder of their summer tour, it was announced today [Aug. 17th].

Due to injuries STEVEN TYLER sustained last week when he fell from the stage during a concert in Sturgis, SD, doctors have advised the lead singer to take the time to properly recuperate from the accident that resulted in a broken shoulder and stitches to his head. In his current condition, TYLER is unable to tour and the band wants to give him time to get healthy.

Ticket refunds for the rest of the tour dates with special guests ZZ Top will be available at point of purchase.

TYLER fell from the stage during the August 5 show that was part of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Western South Dakota. The mishap occurred while he was dancing during the band's "Love in an Elevator." TYLER was subsequently airlifted to a hospital and then returned to Boston to consult with his own doctors.

A video of Tyler's spill is re-posted below.

Meanwhile, Aerosmith tourmates ZZ Top have been adding and rescheduling dates to make up for many of the cancellations. In lieu of their Setpember 14th MSG show with Aerosmith, ZZ Top will be playing on September 18th at NYC's Beacon Theatre. There's no ticket details yet. The dates on their tour that have been confirmed are posted below...

Leftover Crack, Star Fucking Hipsters, Trash Talk, and The Casualties are playing Irving Plaza on July 3rd. Assuming Irving Plaza doesn't get shut down (unlikely) (or even if it does), this punk show is sure to be a good time. Tickets are on sale.

Less of a good time will probably be had at the punk show happening at Madison Square Garden on July 27th. Tickets for Green Day's big NYC show are on sale (@ 10am). They are also playing a few shows at much smaller venues, and Saturday Night Live this weekend.

The opposite of a good time will probably be had at the same big venue on October 5th. The Ting Tings are playing MSG with Pink. Tickets are on presale (@ 10am). PASSWORD = LEAPFROG

Probably fun, but still kind of lame? Aerosmith and ZZ Top play MSG on September 14th. Tickets are on AmEx and Internet presale now, and go on general sale Monday, May 18th, at 10am. It's the same day Kings of Leon play Nassau Coliseum.

Back to good times... Ween are playing the Stone Pony's Summerstage in Asbury Park on July 18th. Tickets go on sale Saturday at noon. Gene Ween is playing Brooklyn on May 21st.

Same venue, same summer (move over Blondie, Pat Benatar and The Donnas): The Pretenders, Cat Power and Juliette (and the Licks) Lewis are playing the Stone Pony's Summerstage on August 9th. Tickets are currently on Ticket Rush presale (password = live), and they go on general sale Saturday at noon.
