Dubbed the Concert for Valor, the Veterans Day celebration is being hosted by Starbucks and HBO, which will open up its signal to cable subscribers nationwide during a live telecast. For those hoping to see it in three dimensions, the concert will be free and open to the public.
Organizers have also promised performances from Dave Grohl, Metallica, Carrie Underwood and Zac Brown Band, as well as appearances by Jamie Foxx, John Oliver, Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who is co-producing the event.

"A lot of journalists, it feels like they want to lure me into being the poster boy, and talk shit about modern country, and I just don't have anything to really offer there," he says. "Because, fortunately, I've never pursued that side of the industry, which means I never had the opportunity to be screwed over or have any of these horror stories that you hear about. So for me to sit and talk about that stuff would be insulting to people who have, and extremely naïve.
"Nothing is really different than it was. It's always been like this," continues Simpson on the cyclical nature of country trends. "I think Tompall Glaser said it best in the Seventies: 'Unless you have a solution or an alternative, shut the fuck up. Because you're just part of the problem.' I just want to write music that pertains to my life as honestly as I can."
"In my opinion, he's as authentic as it gets," says Shooter Jennings of Simpson. Jennings, the son of Waylon Jennings, has been a fan of Simpson's work since his days in the group Sunday Valley and is wowed by the musical similarity to his legendary father -- however unintentional it may be.
"There are so many people who play guitar like my dad, and so many people that imitate that sound, but nobody actually gets it," Jennings says. "Sturgill isn't imitating at all, and he sounds like my favorite era of my dad, the Seventies, when he would sing quieter and more conversational. That's what struck me about Sturgill from Day One. And still does." - [Rolling Stone]
Sturgill Simpson has been getting a lot of acclaim for his new album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, which is a throwback to the '70s style of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard. If you haven't checked it out, a couple videos are below and the whole album can be streamed at Rdio.
Simpson just played NYC last night (7/9) at Bowery Ballroom with Pokey LaFarge, and he's currently opening dates for the Zac Brown Band including tonight (7/10) and Friday (7/11) at PNC Bank Arts Center in New Jersey (tickets). If you'd like to catch him in a more intimate setting, Simpson has just been added to The DuPont Brothers show at Joes Pub on Tuesday (7/15). Tickets are on sale now.

Questlove of The Roots at Brooklyn Bowl (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
We just mentioned that Red Hot Chili Peppers will play a WFAN-presented show at Barclays Center on February 1, and since we last spoke it's been announced that the RHCP show is part of a number of pre-Super Bowl shows happening in NYC before the game happens on February 2 at MetLife Stadium.
A few of those shows happen on the Bud Light Hotel, aka a heavily-branded cruise ship in the Hudson River that will be hosting festivities for the weekend. One of those happens on January 30 with The Roots, Run DMC, Busta Rhymes and more guests TBA.
Another one happens on February 1 with the Foo Fighters and Zac Brown Band, whose new album was produced by Dave Grohl.
CBS also reports that for the week leading up to the Super Bowl, Times Square will be on lockdown: "Starting at midnight on Jan. 26 through Feb. 1, Broadway from 33d Street to 48th Street will be closed to vehicles. In addition, 41st Street will be closed from 9 a.m. to midnight."
The performer for this year's halftime show is Bruno Mars. All Bud Light Hotel concerts are listed below...
This letter, signed by a ton of artists and pictured above, is set to appear in an ad in Billboard:
We are big fans of Pandora. That's why we helped give the company a discount on rates for the past decade.Pink Floyd, Down, Primus, Dead Kennedys (with our without Jello?), Nas, Alabama, Sheryl Crow and many more big major label names signed this (or someone signed it on their behalf). Check out the full list below, and head to fairpayforartists.com for more information on their point of view..
Pandora is now enjoying phenomenal success as a Wall Street company. Skyrocketing growth in revenues and users. We celebrate that. At the same time, the music community is just now beginning to gain its footing in the new digital world.
Pandora's principal asset is the music.
Why is the company asking Congress once again to step in and gut the royalties that thousands of musicians rely upon? That's not fair, and that's not how partners work together.
Congress has many pressing issues to consider, but this is not one of them. Let's work this out as partners and continue to bring fans the great musical experience they rightly expect.
The issue is that Pandora is supporting the Internet Radio Fairness Act which they say will "help end the long-standing discrimination against internet radio". Artists are mad because that possibly means less money for them, but Pandora and other Internet radio providers argue they can't stay in business the way things are now.

After busting up the gang in 2000, snarky mid-'90s piano trio Ben Folds Five reunited this year with a new album on the way and a tour, which they're on now. The tour stops at Central Park Summerstage tonight (9/14), their first NYC show in 12 years. Tickets for tonight's show are still available. BFF will also return to the NYC area for a show at Port Chester's Capitol Theatre on October 9 with Kate Miller Heidke (tickets) and a couple days later they will play opening night of New York Comic Con on October 11. Tckets for that are still available too.
Ben Folds Five, best known for their ballad "Brick" back when people still held up lighters at shows (1997), have a new album, The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind, which is their first since 1999 and is out next week (9/18). The record was funded via Pledgemusic and is a little mellower than the bouncy, fuzzy pop of their Clinton-era singles like "Underground" and "The Battle of Who Could Care Less" but his sense of humor seems intact. You can listen to tracks at SPIN, TeamCoco and Rolling Stone.
Ben Folds Five are also playing Florida's Deluna Fest which happens September 21 - 23 in Pensacola Beach, FL and also features Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Bob Mould doing Copper Blue, Diplo, Florence & the Machine, Band of Horses, and many more. Tickets for Deluna Fest are still available and full line-up is below.
A list of all Ben Folds Five dates, a few classic clips and that Deluna Fest lineup are below...
