Vampire Weekend/Ty Segall/Araabmuzik crowd - Pitchfork Fest 2012
Pitchfork Festival 2012
Pitchfork Festival 2012
AraabMuzik

Thank god for the Chicago Transit Authority. Several "cooling stations" (city buses) that provided respite from the onslaught of heat and humidity at the third day of Pitchfork 2012 in Chicago's Union Park (7/15), a weather pattern which replaced the previous days' periodic downpours. The heat, combined with squirt guns & bikini tops, helped create the perfect setting for performances from the sunny tennis-sweater rock of Vampire Weekend and dream pop of the oh-so-aptly named Beach House.

Random thoughts on the day: Personal highlights for me included a stretch of bands that were unfortunately all clustered across the three stages in the afternoon: Milk Music, Iceage, The Men, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees and Chavez. From catching moments of Kendrick Lamar on the Blue Stage, it was proven to me that he's an excellent live performer, a sentiment clearly echoed by Lady Gaga (who looked on during his set). Onohtrix Point Never's material is compelling, but doesnt fit well on an outdoor festival stage. And it's confirmed, this reviewer still detests Vampire Weekend.

Metric/St. Vincent
Sasquatch Festival 2012 - Day 2
Sasquatch Festival 2012 - Day 2

7:32pm Metric wrapped up a touch early; partly because one new song ("Lost Kitten") was stopped 10 seconds into it and Emily decided to strike it from the set. Aside from that odd error, Metric played a fair set. They cited the show as their "public debut" of Synthetica and they did play mostly new material (7 out of 11 songs), most of which sounds promising. It's always hard to judge new material accurately as the audience doesn't know it so it always comes across slightly weak or stiff. Metric opened their set with newbie "Artificial Nocturne" (also the album's opener). It was one of the stronger new tracks. The other stand outs were "Youth Without Youth" (when played live it seemed to lose it's sluggishness of it's studio version) and "Nothing But Time", a synth/piano number that builds each verse until drums kick in and the song finishes with a flourish of Emily Haines' Pro-One synth. The band closed with an acoustic version "Gimme Sympathy" that had pretty much the entire amphitheater singing along. [The Province]
Here's more pictures from the super-stacked Saturday (5/26) line-up of the Sasquatch Music Festival which happened Memorial Day Weekend in Gorge, Washington -- including Metric, St. Vincent, The Shins, Dum Dum Girls, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Couer de Pirate, Sol, Com Truise and more. The first set from Saturday (5/26) are HERE and Friday (5/25) are HERE. More from Day 2 below and still more Sasquatch pics to come.

The 2012 Pitchfork Music Festival returns to Chicago's Union Park Friday, July 13 - Sunday, July 15! Seven years in, this independently run three-day event has consistently proven to be one of the most welcoming, comfortable, reasonably priced and rewarding weekends of music around.

Sasquatch

"Following last year's 10th anniversary, which crushed previous attendance records and set a new mark for the speed with which tickets sold out, the Sasquatch! Music Festival unveils its 2012 lineup which once again features 4 days of music. The festival, hailed as "a model of well-paced programming...in a four-day schedule as efficient and natural feeling as an expertly built algorithm" by NPR Music while Wired notes, "leave the landscape out of it and Sasquatch! has a lineup to kill for," runs May 25-28 (Memorial Day Weekend) at The Gorge, the internationally acclaimed concert venue carved in the basalt cliffs high above the Columbia River Gorge in Quincy, WA."
The Sasquatch! Music Festival takes place, as usual, at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington over Memorial Day weekend (May 25-28). And this year's lineup is:

Theophilus London in the studio w/ AraabMuzik (via AraabMuzik)
AraabMuzik and Theophilus

Theophilus London is touring the US and Canada in January and February after he plays the SnowGlove Festival in California at the end of this month. His tour will bring him to NYC on February 9 at Webster Hall. Tickets are on sale now. All dates are listed below.

Theophilus, who has been tweeting about being in the studio, was just pictured in studio with AraabMuzik, who posted the above picture to his facebook earlier today.

AraabMuzik will be in NYC for New Year's Eve at the Ad Hoc party at 285 Kent with Balam Acab, Laurel Halo, Light Asylum, Run DMT, and a special guest. Tickets for that show are still available and there will be two open bars during the night.

Theophilus London's track, "I Stand Alone," was recently remixed by Skream (listen below) who it was just announced is opening for Skrillex at T5 (which sold right right out today). AraabMuzik also opens one of Skrillex's LA shows. Diplo opens one too. But even though Diplo's playing a Skrillex show and approving of the American kids loving it, he still feels that the "most exciting sound out of 2011" is the more atmospheric bass stuff like Balam Acab (who plays the NYE show in Brooklyn with AraabMuzik).

Speaking of approving, Balam Acab seems to approve of the track his Tri Angle label-mate Clams Casino produced for The Weeknd on The Weeknd's new mixtape, which you can download for free.

All Theophilus dates and the Skream remix below...

AraabMuzik at Moogfest in October (more by Diana Wong)
AraabMuzik

When Altered Zones announced last month that they would no longer be operating, editors Ric Leichtung and Emilie Friedlander also announced a new project, AdHoc.fm, which will be "a 100% independent, daily music and visual culture publication" and is "coming in 2012."

Ad Hoc are throwing a New Year's Eve party at 285 Kent (12/31) with sets by AraabMuzik, Balam Acab, Light Asylum, Laurel Halo, Run DMT, a special guest, and Weird Magic DJs. Tickets for the show are on sale now. More details and dates are below.

Laurel Halo will also be DJing in NYC on New Year's Eve at Zebulon with DJ Hiro Kone and a band TBA. They'll be spinning "Italo Disco, House, Soul, Techno, Postpunk; whatever makes you move."

Another similar electronic-filled NYE option is the Nosaj Thing show at Glasslands (12/31). When we first discussed the show, no openers had been announced yet. We now know that the bill also includes El Topo (aka Dave Harrington of Nicolas Jaar's Darkside project), Archie Pelago, and DJIlirjana (Pop Manifesto/Typical Girls). Tickets are still available.

Speaking of AraabMuzik, he released the deluxe edition to his album Electronic Dream last week. The album features six new tracks, including the Deadmau5-sampling "I Remember," which you can stream below. We recently spoke to Gang Gang Dance engineer Sean Maffucci who is in New Moods, and he said "I don't think I've heard a record like this before. It seems to break every production rule and yet sounds so sweet and pleasing to the ears."

That stream, NYE show details and more AraabMuzik dates, below...

New Moods

New Moods (whose members include a Young Magic member and Gang Gang Dance's engineer) have been busy practicing for their 9pm set at the BV Holiday Party at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight (12/13) (some tickets will be on sale at the door), but they managed to get this list in just in time for those going (or still thinking of going) (or wondering if they should show up for the opener) (you should!) to get to know them better. Here is a list of the top 10 music things that New Moods loved in/about 2011 (in no particular order)...

Tangerine Dream & fan
Tangerine Dream
Chromeo

The annual music festival Moogfest took place this Halloween weekend down in Asheville, North Carolina. Countless bands we know and love played over the course of its three days including The Antlers, Atlas Sound, Austra, Anika, The Field, AraabMuzik, Flying Lotus, Chromeo, TV on the Radio, Moby, Matthew Dear, Tangerine Dream, and many more. And that was just Friday. Friday pictures are in this post.

As NPR points out:

"Tangerine Dream has wore many hats during a prolific 35-year career: Krautrock, New Age, film scores and pioneering synth music, to start. The group has consistently worked at a steady clip, generating 116 (!) live and studio albums in spite of its many personnel changes. Edgar Froese, the creative force behind Tangerine Dream, is the only remaining original member."
Tangerine Dream played a two hour set at the fest. You can listen to the whole thing at NPR who have streaming sets from Austra, Atlas Sound, Tim Hecker, The Field, CANT and others too. The rest of our pictures from the first of three days, below...

Black & Brown

Black Milk is on the beats and Danny Brown is on the mic, and together they are Black & Brown, the title of their forthcoming EP due on Fat Beats on 11/1. Stream the entire EP below. No Black & Brown dates as of yet.

Danny Brown meanwhile is currently out on tour with Das Racist, though he doesn't open their Brooklyn show at Music Hall of Williamsburg. That one will instead be opened by Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire and Despot (just like the Bowery Ballroom show was).

Danny Brown also appears on the new Random Axe LP, which is out now and streaming below. Random Axe recent finished a batch of US dates and are currently touring Russia(!). Tour dates and the Random Axe stream is below.

Danny Brown also appears on a new AraabMuzik remix of a song by The Big Pink, "Stay Gold". Download that, the version of the remix without Danny and the original above. Stream the remix and watch the video for the original version below. AraabMuzik opens for SBTRKT at Bowery Ballroom on Halloween.

Gauntlet Hair
Gauntlet Hair

After a quiet day, there's no shortage of excellent evening shows for this first night of CMJ 2011. There are just my suggestions -- check CMJ's much-improved (though still not quite helpful enough) schedule for a full rundown of official showcases.

After studying the schedule, my pick for single showcase of the night is the Lefse Records/Banter/Waaga showcase at Pianos which has more than a couple bands of interest on the bill. Among them: Denver duo Gauntlet Hair whose album is out today on Dead Oceans, featuring some densely-layerd ANCO-inspired pop. (Check out an MP3 at the top of this post.) Also playing: San Diego's Cuckoo Chaos whose song "Just Ride It" has stayed in rotation on my stereo for a while now. (You can d/l that above too.) There's also laptop Canadian Teen Daze (who maybe you caught at the Creators Project), Chicago's A Lull, Atlanta's terrific Balkans, and the blissed-out Sun Glitters. It may not have the biggest names on the bill of any show tonight, but who knows where many of them will be in six months? $10 without a CMJ badge.

Cuckoo Chaos
Cuckoo Chaos

Dent May
Dent May

Coming a close second...Public Assembly, a club no one ever seems to go to for shows in non-festival times, has one of the most solid weeks of any venue in the city. (I'm not just saying that because BV has day shows there Friday and Saturday, either.) Tonight the front room is the Car Park/Paw Tracks showcase with icy synth queen Class Actress, Southern charmer Dent May, Cleveland power-poppers Cloud Nothings, plus Young Magic, Adventure and Light Asylum side project Jimmy Whispers. In the back room, it's the Mexican Summer showcase with the goth-electro of Light Asylum, West Coast droners Date Palms, Boston indie folk act Quilt, plus Radio People, Home Blitz and Xander Duell.

Wild Flag

Meanwhile, Merge Records is at Bowery Ballroom for what will be one of the more difficult shows for badgeholders to get into, as supergroup Wild Flag are headliners. It's sold out but they're letting in "limited badges" so if you have one, go early to A) make sure you get in, and B) to see the wonderful Hospitality whose teriffic debut album comes out on Merge in January. In between, Eleanor Friedberger, making for a fine evening of female-fronted music.

At Glasslands, our pals at Stereogum and Popgun are throwing a party with a slew of cool band they've already told you you need to see. Such bands as anthemic Jersey dudes Titus Andronicus, the instrumental magic of Delicate Steve, the nu goth sounds of Chelsea Wolfe, '90s indie rock lovers Mr. Dream, crazy catchy Canadians Holerado, and Cuckoo Chaos.   $15 with RSVP. and if you have a CMJ badge you get a discount of some sort (wither badgeholders' privilege).

At Cameo, the very helpful show listing site Oh My Rockness is having their showcase which also doubles as a 7th Birthday party for the site. (Remember when you had to rely on Village Voice ads to find out when shows were happening?) It's a good line-up, too with eager beavers Dive, slinky tribal sounds of Zambri, nouveau synth poppers Adventure, Chad Valley, Even Voytas, Headless Horseman and Wise Blood. $8 if you don't have a badge.

You've got a couple opportunities to see underrated UK act The Duke Spirit tonight, both of which are free whether you have a badge or not.

Foreign Resort
Foreign Resort

If you're into gloomy postpunk a la The Chameleons or early Bunnymen, you might want to head to Lit Lounge to catch The Foreign Resort (8PM) who do that sound pretty well. You can check out a stream at the bottom of this post.

Dovecote Records is having a CMJ Kickoff party at Club Norwood tonight, with the very hotly-tipped Araabmusik, plus Supreme Cuts. 9PM. RSVP by emailing RSVP@DOVECOTERECORDS.COM but there's no gauranteed entry. Go early. Flyer below.

In the world of unofficial shows, at 285 Kent we've got San Francisco's awesome Grass Widow, plus NYC/Memphis duo Coasting, Air Waves and Baybee Teeth.

What are YOU going to see tonight? Flyers, streams and set times are after the jump.

DOWNLOAD: Xeno & Oaklander - Autumn's Edge (MP3)

Xeno

Xeno & Oaklander are New York's premier minimal wave, and have been doing it 1981 style -- using patch bays and vintage equipment exclusively, no laptops -- for over five years. Despite the duo's neo-luddite approach to making electronic music, Sean McBride and Liz Wendelbo have certainly gotten better at what they're doing, both mastery of their gear and in songwriting.

Sets & Lights, which was released this week on Wierd Records, is the band's third album and easily their best. Arpeggiated synths and sequencers bubble along and Wendelbo and McBride trade vocals... it's like the soundtrack to some gleaming baroque futureworld. You can download "Autumn's Edge" at the top of this post, and be sure to check out the genuinely spooky video to single "The Staircase" further down.

Xeno & Oaklander have a few shows coming up. Tonight (10.12), they celebrate the release of Sets & Lights tonight (10.12) at the weekly Wierd Party at Home Sweet Home. Friday night (10.14) they'll play the afterparty of the first night of the Neon Marshmallow Festival which is happening all weekend at Public Assembly.

Then next Saturday (10/22), Xeno & Oaklander play Altered Zones at the New Museum, which seems to be this year's attempt by Pitchfork at CMJ counterprograming. (Remember #Offline?) In addition to X&O, performers include AraabMuzik, Grimes, Teengirl Fantasy, Trash Talk, Eric Copeland, Prince Rama, Light Asylum, FORMA, and Dive. The show is 21+ and $25 for non-museum members and a portion of the proceeds goes to benefit the 2012 New Museum Triennial, an international exhibition of emerging artists. This actually sounds potentially cool. Flyer for the event is below.

SBTRKT

Back in June, we announced the killer initial lineup for Moogfest 2011 (October 28, 29, 30). That lineup just got even better with additions including TV on the Radio, Special Disco Version featuring James Murphy and Pat Mahoney, St. Vincent, SBTRKT, Flying Lotus, YACHT, John Maus, Araabmuzik Baths, Zomby, Active Child and more. It was also announced that Brian Eno, part of the initial lineup, will be presenting Brian Eno's 77 Million Paintings and "Illustrated Talks" as part of this year's fest.

The initial announcement also included Suicide, Tangerine Dream, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Austra, M83, Little Dragon, Passion Pit, Toro y Moi, Moby (full band), The Flaming Lips, Battles, CANT, Brandt Brauer Frick (who will be on a US tour that hits Glasslands), and more.

Speaking of CANT (aka Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear), he revealed the song "Believe" from his upcoming debut LP yesterday. Stream the track below. The album comes out September 13 on Chris' own Terrible Records. He's also got an upcoming tour surrounding Moogfest which includes a show on October 25 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets are still on sale.

Speaking of SBTRKT and Little Dragon, Drumma Boy remixed the SBTRKT song with Little Dragon's Yukimi Nagano on lead vocals. Shabazz Palaces is also featured on the remix (compare that to Drake's version). Grab the track above via Gorilla vs Bear. Shabazz wrote on Facebook today, "Besides the release of Black Up, I don't think I've seen one article on here create such a surge of activity as this Wildfire Remix has. Amazing."

Sampha, who sings live with SBTRKT and on his album, also recently released his own song, "Indecision." Stream the track below. Moogfest is one of the stops on SBTRKT's recently announced US tour that also hits Bowery Ballroom on October 31 (with Araabmuzik) and Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 1. Tickets for both shows are still on sale.

Little Dragon plays a BV-presented Record Release show at Music Hall of WIlliamsburg TONIGHT (8/16). The show is sold out, but if you don't have tickets you can catch them in NYC again on their headlining tour which hits Terminal 5 on October 14. Tickets are still on sale.
