The applause was loud before The Besnard Lakes played a note, and it was coming from the stage. The Montreal band were offering up thanks to the forty or so fans who trudged through the blizzard-like conditions of Winter Storm Jonas to see their free in-store at Rough Trade on Saturday afternoon (1/23). "We were here a year ago, almost to the day. They were predicting 'snowpocalypse' then too, but it ended up being a couple inches," frontman Jace Lasek told the crowd. "But when we looked out the window this morning we were like 'oh shit.'" (They set up a cardboard Ghost cutout on the floor just in case no one showed up.) Troupers and snow experts that they are, The Besnard Lakes actually helped the Rough Trade staff shovel the sidewalk and entrance to the store.
The circumstances of the day -- this was basically the only high-profile show that actually happened on Saturday -- made for a special show. Opening with Are the Roaring Night's great "Like the Ocean, Like the Innocent," the band stuck mainly to songs from their brand new A Coliseum Complex Museum (it was the release show), hitting album highlights "Golden Lion," "Tungsten 4: A Refugee," and "The Plain Moon." The band's widescreen sound -- roaring guitars, spiraling solos, gorgeous harmonies, expert use of loud-quiet-loud dynamics -- make nearly every song seem like what another band might save for their finale. The Besnard Lakes are all peaks and crescendos, and it's a credit to their skill that it all works. It was a terrific show.
Hopefully The Besnard Lakes will announce a proper North American tour soon. More pictures from the snowy Rough Trade in-store, as well as their setlist, below...

The Lamb of God / Anthrax / Deafheaven / Power Trip tour was supposed to hit NYC on Saturday (1/23) at Hammerstein Ballroom, but due to weather it's been moved to Monday (1/25). All tickets will be honored. The show is sold out but resale tickets are available. Their NJ show for Tuesday (1/26) at Starland Ballroom is still on as planned (tickets),
as is Anthrax's signing at Rough Trade NYC on Monday. (Update: Signing is cancelled.)
Updated dates are listed below...
I guess I didn't have to cancel the show at MSG tonight. I don't blame the mayor. That storm was a monster. We got lucky. When you consider the action taken by the government of entire north east, they got it right. To expect accuracy from each individual mayor is just too much. For us in New York and us in my house and us at MSG it was overblown. But if you expand that 'us' to everyone in the path is the storm, they were spot on. My family in Boston is part of us for me. So that's how I look at it.While Winter Storm Juno wasn't quite the blizzard in New York City as predicted, tonight's Louis CK show is still canceled. You can fill that void, though, with Louis' new comedy special, Live at the Comedy Store, which was filmed last month at the famous LA spot, and just went up on his website:
I developed and prepared this material over the last year or so, mostly in comedy clubs. This special kind of goes back to when I used to just make noises and be funny for no particular reason. It felt right to shoot this special in a club to give it that live immediate intimate feeling. The show is about an hour long. The opening act, who is seen at the beginning (good place for an opening act) is Jay London. One of my favorite club comics going way back to the late 80s when I first started in working in New York.Louis CK Live at the Comedy Store is available now for five bucks.
I hope you like it.
Louis talked about his new special, the blizzard, doing big shows like his MSG run, and other stuff on The Late Show with David Letterman last night. Video of that, below...

Zola Jesus on a snowy Manhattan Ave (via Dima Drjuchin)
Zola Jesus kicked off her two-night stand at Saint Vitus on Sunday (pictures / setlist), and in order to finish it last night, she was one of very few to actually play NYC during the snow storm. And Zola Jesus took "playing NYC during the snow storm" to new levels when she took a trombone player and the crowd outside to perform "Nail" in the snow in front of the venue. Watch a video below.
As mentioned, Louis CK went ahead and canceled Tuesday's MSG show due to Winter Storm Juno which is just starting to hit NYC and may drop two feet of snow. Mayor Bill de Blasio has declared a State of Emergency starting at 11 PM tonight. (Subways and public transportation close at 11 PM tonight too!) Here are some other blizzard show updates. If you are out tonight, please be safe!

All Broadway shows are canceled tonight.
We've had the first major show casualty of the Blizzard known as Juno: Louis CK's fourth MSG show that was to have been on Tuesday (1/27). Says Louis:
I am really sorry about this and I am surprised to learn as I write this that there is only one L in the word canceled. I'll have to take my phone's word for it. But it doesn't look right to me.Louis says all ticketholders will automatically get a refund.
In any case, there seems to be a massive storm approaching New York City. They are calling this storm "historic" which.... Well I didn't know you could call a thing historic if it hasn't happened yet. But I'm not one to defy future historic events. And I have to be respectful of the responsibility I have to the 15,000 people who are holding tickets to the show and could be stranded somewhere historically trying to get to or from my show. I think it's clearly better that I alter history in the name of safety and cancel. Besides, if you've ever tried to get your deposit back when you rent a banquet hall for a wedding that gets snowed out, you don't want to even know what the deposit is on Madison Square Jesus Christing Garden is.
Louis CK will, however, be on The Late Show with David Letterman tonight (1/26). "You can yell boo right at my stupid and very handsome face on your tv screen or on your paper towel or your watch or whatever you view Letterman on." CK also mentions that he'll have a new standup special available via his website soon.
As for other blizzard show cancellations, check HERE.

This is the second, and opening tonight is noise duo UNIFORM (ex-Drunkdriver, The Men).
Broncho, Dreamers, Heaven @ Rough Trade
