"Actor Michael McKean, who starred in the film "This is Spinal Tap" and TV's "Laverne and Shirley," was recovering Tuesday night in a Manhattan hospital after he was struck by a car on the upper West Side, police sources said.Ouch! But it sounds like he's doing ok (though he won't be able to perform his latest Broadway role as "Dick Jensen" in Gore Vidal's "The Best Man" this Wednesday - it will be the first time he's ever missed work according to the Daily News.)
McKean, 64, who played Lenny on the hit television show, was seen bleeding from the head after a car barreled into him at W. 86th St. and Broadway just before 3 p.m., witnesses and the FDNY said.
The actor, who also portrayed Spinal Tap's lead singer and guitarist David St. Hubbins in the cult classic "This is Spinal Tap," was initially taken to St. Luke's Hospital in critical condition, fire officials said.
His status was upgraded to stable condition at the hospital where doctors discovered he had a broken leg, according to his publicist Harriet Sternberg. [Daily News]
Please keep Jonathan Toubin in your thoughts today....
"..The [Portland] room's occupant, Jonathan Toubin -- a DJ from New York in town for a Thursday night show at a Southeast Portland club -- "was literally stuck under the front of the car."Please get well soon Jonathan!
The cab couldn't be backed out of the room because its back wheels were stuck on what was left of Room 115's front wall or window panel.
Palmiter, standing by the driver's side rear quarter panel, and three maintenance men lifted the cab's back tires up and off the front wall.
Within 10 to 20 seconds, they freed the tires and hotel worker Albert Abad was able to inch the cab in reverse, off Toubin.
Toubin was unclothed and semi-conscious, able to move his hands and legs slightly as paramedics rushed to treat him, police said.
Toubin had been pinned between the cab and the room's back wall, said Lt. Rich Tyler, of Station 1. Firefighters placed the man on a backboard. "As he was carried into an ambulance, he was able to talk, but completely covered in blood," Tyler said. " [Oregon Live]
UPDATE: There will be benefits for Jonathan at both Motor City and Home Sweet Home in NYC Friday night (12/9).
Gods & Queens at Public Assembly (more by Jason House)
Philadelphia band Gods & Queens ran into a frightening situation in the Czech Republic. Read their story below. Help out the band if you can by purchasing a copy of their EP via Bandcamp or contributing via paypal to jamiegetz(at)gmail.com.
"I heard about what happened to Alex almost immediately after the fact from his brother Whitey who played guitar alongside Alex in The Trolls, my band from 1998 to 2003. I felt terrible and although it won't bring him back I really hope they find the person who hit him and ran. Alex deserves a lot of recognition for his contributions to the arts. He was a drummer with a thunderous left hand but he was so much more than that in the arts scene around Los Angeles. He was a member of a very interesting indie band called the Nymphs and he'd had a very solid career as a set designer in major studio films and TV for some years. His son Lucius danced his debut this week with the American ballet theatre in New York and I wish Alex had been around for that he had a lot to do with it. The Kirsts are a unique and artistic family and I know they will all miss him, as I do. Alex was a very, very nice and good person he helped a lot of people, including me." - Iggy PopAlex Kirst was the victim of a hit-and-run accident in Cathedral City, California. RIP Alex.
Weekend (phogo by Marina Forte)
According to Bill, Weekend "pretty much destroyed Glasslands. If not the actual structure then the eardrums contained within. Wow." If you're confused, that's in reference to the show they played at Brooklyn venue Glasslands Gallery last night, 11/21, with their tour mates Young Prisms. Tonight they were scheduled to appear in MA, BUT they reportedly "just got into a pretty bad wreck in NYC - band members all ok but van is totaled -
show in Boston tonight is canceled.... remains to be seen what the status is for the rest of their tour. will keep you posted." Damn that sucks. Remaining dates on the tour include Philly, CT, and 11/27 back in NYC at Cake Shop. Stay tuned for updates. UPDATE: The Boston show is back on. Weekend just hopped in Young Prism's van.

R.I.P. Makh Daniels (more by Samantha Marble)
CENTRAL POINT, Ore. -- A van carrying nine members of two California-based "death metal" bands lost control crashed on Interstate 5 in Central Point when the driver fell asleep, killing one passenger and injuring two others just after 5:30 AM Monday. The Gauntlet is currently reporting that the "adult male victim" is Early Graves vocalist Makh Daniels. So sad to hear this news... our condolences go out to Daniels's family, the Early Graves guys, and The Funeral Pyre.
Oregon State Police say the van, pulling a trailer, was carrying members of a San Francisco-based death metal band to California when it crashed in the southbound lane between the Central Point and Blackwell Road exits.
OSP says a 2003 Chevrolet extended van pulling a utility trailer was traveling southbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 34. The van contained nine adult males returning to California from Eugene where they played at a weekend outdoor concert.
The van's driver reportedly fell asleep and he lost control. The van and trailer traveled off the right shoulder, rolled and came to rest off the freeway in a grassy area. None of the nine occupants were using safety restraints and the adult male victim was ejected from a rear cargo area where he and two others were. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene by responding emergency medical services personnel.
The driver and one passenger were transported by ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. -[KTVL]

Chi Cheng, Bassist for Deftones
Hello everyone,Other news sources are saying he's in a coma. Our prayers are with him.
It deeply saddens me to inform you all that our brother Chi Cheng was involved in a terrible car accident last night. He is currently in a Northern California Hospital in serious, but stable condition. I am on my way up North right now to be by his side along with the rest of our band mates and family. Chi is one of the strongest people I know, and I'm praying that his strength will get him through this. Please say a prayer for him as well.

Let's start with the good news. They are all OK - NO injuries. Genghis Tron narrowly avoided a truly great disaster when the right rear wheel of their van went Audi 5000 and sent them skipping across three lanes of traffic into the relative sanctuary of a ditch in the median. From the band:
"Deja vu. For the second time in Genghis Tron's career we got into a pretty harrowing car accident. Yesterday afternoon while driving on I-71 in Ohio, the rear right wheel of our van decided to jump ship. We spun out across three lanes of busy traffic and landed in a ditch in the median. Somehow we managed to avoid all other cars and luckily no one was injured, but our van and trailer have certainly seen better days."Scoot on over to their myspace and donate via paypal if you can. Things don't look good, indeed, though so far they've only officially cancelled last night's show in Butler, PA, and tonight's in Philly.
"We've set up a paypal donation button on our MySpace page to help us get back on the road in time for next week's tour with Converge. You can also send donations to gtmerch AT gmail DOT com. Every little bit helps...thanks in advance and make sure your tires aren't dickwads like ours! "
Genghis Tron recently played a bunch of shows at SXSW including the Brooklyn Vegan free day party at Emo's Lounge. More photos from that show below....
