Grizzly Bear / My Morning Jacket in Times Square - 10/12/13
In between the day's coffeehouse-ready beginning and stadium-worthy end, Divine Fits and Grizzly Bear delivered the two most CBGB-worthy sets of the day: It was easy to picture Divine Fits' (and Spoon's) Britt Daniel and Grizzly Bear's Ed Droste in the recesses of a rock club, though the North Stage of the festival, sidled up alongside the Ed Sullivan Theater, felt as natural an arena as any for their straightforward rock stylings and fuzzed-out, exploratory soundscapes, respectively. As the 2013 festival season nears its end, both Grizzly Bear and Divine Fits have hopscotched between the stages of the country's biggest productions, and the two bands made for standout moments at CBGB just as they did at Bonnaroo and Outside Lands before them.We're now in the midst of CMJ, but this past weekend another music marathon took over NYC, CBGB Festival. The fest didn't have much in the way of CBGB-related music (or much at all), but like last year, the main attraction was a big free Times Square show. This year's show started with Lisa Loeb, followed by The Wallflowers, then Spoon/Wolf Parade-related supergroup Divine Fits. People then began really piling in for James Murphy's DJ set, which was followed by Grizzly Bear, and finally My Morning Jacket, who brought out The Wallflowers' Jakob Dylan, Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard, Merrill Garbus (tUnE-yArDs), and Antibalas (who played two of their own NYC shows that weekend). Despite seeming like a potential disaster, the whole thing actually went over pretty smoothly. Pictures of the whole day are in this post.
My Morning Jacket's grand finale at CBGB was fortified by friends, as special guests hopped on and off the stage for the final moments of the festival. Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard and Antibalas collaborated with Jim James for the recently released tribute Fela Kuti compilation RED HOT + FELA, and their performance of "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am" was as meditative and serene as it was explosive and untethered. Jakob Dylan then joined in for a take on "Don't Do It" from The Last Waltz before My Morning Jacket wrapped up the festival with "One Big Holiday," which relished in its might as a literal and figurative showstopper. The 2013 CBGB Festival happens this week, kicking off on Tuesday (10/8) with the premiere of CBGB: The Movie at Landmark Sunshine. You can still get tickets to the premiere (though, at $50, they're not cheap). Then on Wednesday (10/9) the festival starts in earnest with music showcases around the city, a pretty enticing film festival, industry talks, photo exhibits, and a Thursday (10/10) keynote address featuring Duff McKagan and a reconstructed CBGB interior.

On the music side of things, notable shows include the BV-presented Judge and Manipulate show at Saint Vitus on Friday (10/11); the huge, free show in Times Square on Saturday (10/12) with My Morning Jacket, Grizzly Bear, Divine Fits and a James Murphy DJ set; and the Carry On Band show at Bowery Electric on Thursday (10/10) with Lydia Lunch, Glen Matlock, Sylvain Sylvain, Lenny Kaye, Richard Lloyd, Cheetah Chrome (one of two CBGB appearances for him) and more.
A few others: Bell X1 and Tristen play Bowery Ballroom on Saturday (tickets); recently rejuvenated '90s shoegazers The Veldt play Cameo on Thursday (10/10) with Heaven and Miracle Falls; Massachusetts metal band Killswitch Engage will be at Santos on October 12 with Eye Ra Haze (tickets); and Dale Ernhardt Jr. Jr. and Atlas Genius at Irving Plaza on Thursday & Friday (tickets). There's also the "Never Again" photo exhibit at Wooster St. Social Club featuring many BV photographers. Opening night party for that is Wednesday from 7 - 10 PM and is free.
On a similar tip the same night, legendary downtown scenester, street photographer, and Beastie Boys cohort Ricky Powell has a photography exhibit, titled "Funky Dope Maneuvers Photography & Slideshow" happening on Wednesday at Site/109 (109 Norfolk Street) from 8 - 11 PM. Cheetah Chrome, guitarist for legendary punk band The Dead Boys and pre-Dead Boys band Rocket From the Tombs (with whom he's reunited in recent years), is set to put out his first-ever solo release this week (10/8) via Plowboy Records, which he co-founded. Aptly titled Solo, the release is a 7-song EP that features songs from his 1996 "great lost solo album" (produced by Genya Ravan, executive produced by CBGB owner/Dead Boys manager Hilly Kristal), and from a 2010 session he did with New York Dolls guitarist Sylvain Sylvain when they teamed up for a collaborative project, The Batusis, which also featured The Cult's Lez Warner and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts' Sean Koos.
The EP's single is the jangly acoustic rocker "East Side Story," which you can stream (via USA Today), along with the tracklist below. That's the album artwork above.
The EP comes out the same day as the CBGB movie, which features Cheetah being played by Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley from the Harry Potter films) and a cameo by Cheetah himself. As discussed, that movie premieres at the CBGB Festival, where Cheetah will also be playing two full band shows.
Cheetah and his band -- rounded out by The Blackhearts bassist Enzo Penziotto, Iggy Pop/Samhain guitarist Pete Marshall, and drummer Frank Ferrer (Guns N' Roses, Psychedelic Furs) -- will play CBGB Fest shows on October 9 at Leftfield (87 Ludlow St) with Rousers, Pale Face, and Genya Ravan Band; and on October 10 at Bowery Electric for the previously discussed Carry On Band Series, which features a ton of other punk legends like Lydia Lunch, Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), Sylvain Sylvain, Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group), Richard Lloyd (Television), Andy Shernoff (Dictators), Tuff Darts and more (tickets).
In related news, 1975-1980 footage of the NYC punk scene, including clips of The Dead Boys, Iggy Pop, Richard Hell, Bad Brains, The Cramps and more, has been put together for the archive film, Nightclubbing, which just screened in NYC this past Friday (10/4). A description (in case you missed it) reads:
In the summer of 1975 on New York's Lower East Side, Pat Ivers and a group of like-minded videographers with borrowed cameras set out to capture as much of New York City's exploding punk music scene as possible. After an early disbanding of the original group, Ivers found a sole partner in Emily Armstrong and the two continued the project for a total of five years, capturing legendary performances at CBGB's, Mudd Club, Danceteria and elsewhere by iconic bands and artists such as Iggy Pop, Dead Boys, The Cramps and more. Ivers and Armstong continued filming until a 1980 arrest, along with the entire staff of the illegally operated Danceteria, convinced them to stop (the pair were quickly exonerated and freed).There's an opening happening at NYU's Fales Library on October 17 at 7 PM, with a party and screening. Hell's telling of his life thereafter is unclouded by hyperbole. Straightforward, interestingly done weavings of story and description are littered with occasional punches of universal truths. He writes about his bands, his poetry, his struggle to make a life as an unrelenting artist even if he didn't call himself that at the time, his planting of the roots of punk-rock and his warranted frustration that the Sex Pistols just kind of lifted his attitude and style and took it all the way into the annals of popular rock history.Richard Hell is also on the CBGB movie's soundtrack along with Dead Boys, New York Dolls, Television, and many more.
"There's a lot of talk of misogyny," Hell said about criticism he's faced since the book was released. "There's a lot of talk that I'm a terrible writer or that I'm a great writer. There's definitely a difference of mentality. Some people talk about how egotistical I am, others how honest or self-aware I am. ... But it was the truth. And that was what was important to me. To tell the truth as much as I could."

Here's something you can see at CBGB Festival next week that you may not have expected: the inside of the club itself. When the legendary Lower East Side club closed back in 2006, owner Hilly Kristal and club talent booker Louise Staley carefully dismantled the interior and have had it in storage ever since. "Hilly wanted them to live on. He saved them for exactly this type of occasion," said Staley in a press release.
So, the original CBGB walls and the original sound system will be reconstructed - no, not at the Varvatos store, but at Landmark Sunshine Theatre on October 10 for the CBGB Fest keynote address which will be given by MTV President, Van Toffler and Duff McKagan whose band, Duff McKagan's Loaded, played the fest last year in Times Square. You can't make this stuff up.
Other CBGB Fest events: My Morning Jacket and Grizzly Bear are playing for free in Times Square; Judge will be at Saint Vitus, and many BV photographers (and others) have work in a free photo exhibit.
The 2013 CBGB Festival is coming up next week (Oct. 8 - 13), and in addition to the many shows, movie screenings and panel discussions, there's also going to be a photography exhibit. The "Never Again" Photo Show will be on display at Wooster Street Social Club from October 9 - Nov 1 and explores "the lexicon of the New York music scene, documenting the moments that can never be re-created, and continuing the tradition championed by music-photographers of the past: creating new legacies of moments that might otherwise be overlooked." Photographers include many BrooklynVegan contributors: Chris La Putt, David Andrako, Dana (distortion) Yavin, Amanda Hatfield, Greg Cristman, Jason Bergman, Jacob Blickenstaff, Abbey Braden Raymonde, Guy Eppel, Jen Maler, Ryan Muir, Gabi Porter, Kyle Dean Reinford, Tod Seelie, Rebecca Smeyne, Loren Wohl, and Ebru Yildiz.
The opening night party (10/9) goes from 7-10 PM and features DJ Justin Collectorscum, complimentary beverages and "Rock n' Roll manicures by NQ."
As discussed, the CBGB Music & Film Festival is returning to NYC from October 9 to 13 across various venues, and a number of films (including the premiere of the CBGB movie) are screening at the festival. Festival badges are still available, and since we last spoke, tickets for individual movies went on sale.
The CBGB movie premieres at Landmark Sunshine Cinema on October 8 and tickets for that are on sale now.

As discussed, the CBGB Music & Film Festival is returning from October 9 to 13 across various NYC venues. It's since been announced that like they did last year, they'll be doing a free concert in Times Square on October 12. The lineup for the show is Grizzly Bear, My Morning Jacket, Divine Fits, The Wallflowers, and a James Murphy DJ set.
Missed them at one of their two large Manhattan shows earlier this year? Well, chances are you'll miss them again because not many people will fit into Saint Vitus on October 11th for the Invisible Oranges-presented JUDGE show happening there as part of the CBGB Festival on that night in the intimate Brooklyn venue with Manipulate and more TBA. Tickets will go on sale Friday (9/27) and limited CBGB Fest badges will also get in at the door. Brooklyn's Celestial Shore released their new album, 10x, last week via Hometapes. "Beachy" is a term that's thrown around a lot with them, and you can hear traces of Brian Wilson in their harmonies, but "Little Deuce Coup" this ain't. The group bring an intricate mathy-ness to the music, with frequent time/tempo changes making the album right at, er, home on Hometapes (All Tiny Creatures, Slaraffenland). You can stream two tracks from the album below and the whole thing via Spotify or Rdio.
Celestial Shore play a record release party tonight (9/13) at Silent Barn. Openers are Empress Of and TEEN (both who could probably headline Silent Barn on their own), plus Bueno. The band have a bunch of upcoming NYC shows, actually. They'll support Darwin Deez and Caged Animals at Knitting Factory on September 29 (tickets); play Grand Victory on October 4 with Feuding Fathers; open for Arto Lindsay as part of the CBGB Fest at Bowery Electric on October 12 (tickets); and play with Luke Temple at Le Poisson Rouge on October 14 (tickets). Cali skate punks NOFX have announced a US tour which will go down this fall and hit NYC on November 30 at Irving Plaza. Support at that show, and a few of the other Northeast dates, comes from The F.U.'s and Implants. Tickets for that show are currently on Citi Cardmember, Live Nation (password: "HOB20") and Music Geeks (password: "musicgeeks") presales, and the general on-sale begins Friday (9/13) at 10 AM. All tour dates are listed below.
As discussed, NOFX frontman Fat Mike's label Fat Wreck Chords are doing their official CMJ showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 18 with Good Riddance and Western Addiction reunions, plus sets from The Flatliners and Brooklyn/NJ surf punks Night Birds. That same lineup (minus The Flatlieners) goes on a Rocks Off Cruise (10/19) the next day. Tickets for both shows are still available.
You can also catch Western Addiction at a smaller, sweatier show when they play Acheron on October 20 with Eric Davidson's (of New Bomb Turks) band Livids and Brooklyn punks Weird Womb. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Western Addiction's only full length album was 2005's Cognicide, which you can stream on Spotify.
Another good punk show at Acheron is Iron Chic, RVIVR, Nude Beach, and Giant Peach on October 13. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
Meanwhile, you can also catch Long Island's Iron Chic in NYC when they open for Kill Your Idols at Santos Party House on November 30, with Concrete Cross and Bad Side also on the bill. That's Kill Your Idols' second show at the venue after the previously discussed November 29 date with Crime In Stereo and Altered Boys. Tickets for both nights are still available.
Boston punk fans may be interested in knowing that Dropkick Murphys have announced their hometown St. Patrick's Day shows, which include five shows at House of Blues from March 13-16. Tickets for all five shows go on sale Saturday (9/14) at 10 AM.
Don't forget that The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are doing their Hometown Throwdown at the same venue in December.
As mentioned in our last punk roundup, The Casualties are doing some shows in Long Island and NJ this week. The big festival season may be coming to a close now that Labor Day is behind us and it doesn't really feel like summer anymore, but of course that doesn't mean there aren't any to still look forward to (though many are in warmer places than here in the Northeast).
One festival that will take an airplane ticket and a passport to get to from the US, but has a lineup that might make it worth it, is the Berlin Festival in -- you guessed it -- Berlin. It goes down this weekend from September 6-7 and includes Blur, Bjork, Pet Shop Boys, My Bloody Valentine, Klaxons, Savages, Justice (DJ), John Talabot (live), and more. In October, Austin gets the previously discussed Austin City Limits Festival for two weekends (10/4-6 & 10/11-13) with Depeche Mode, The Cure, Atoms for Peace, Phoenix, Wilco, Vampire Weekend, The National, passion Pit, Queens of The Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Kendrick Lamar, Franz Ferdinand and more. The tracklist for that movie's soundtrack was just revealed, and while there's not too much you don't already have if you're already into this stuff, it should make a great classic-punk 101 for anyone who's yet to have discovered these gems. The soundtrack will feature classic tunes from Talking Heads, The Stooges, Dead Boys, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Television, Wayne County & the Electric Chairs, New York Dolls, The Velvet Underground, Johnny Thunder & the Heartbreakers, and more. Plus, there's some live tracks, demos, and alternate versions of songs from other beloved bands like Blondie, MC5, The Dictators and more. The soundtrack will be out on October 8 via Omnivore Records physically and Rhino digitally.

The film stars Alan Rickman (you know, Hans Gruber from Die Hard) as CB's owner Hilly Kristal, which is a check in the "could be good" category... but then there's Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins as Iggy Pop, Malin Ackerman as Debbie Harry, and, um, Rupert Grint (aka Ron Weasley) as Rocket From the Tombs' Cheetah Chrome. Donal Logue, Johnny Galecki and Bradley Whitford are also in this thing. If the poster is any indication, it'll be a wacky comedy?As discussed, the CBGB Music & Film Festival is returning to various NYC venues from October 9 to 13. Many films will be making their premieres at the fest, and it's just been announced that the long-time-coming CBGB movie will make its festival premiere during the film portion (the above text is from our last post on it). Other music films making their premieres at the festival include Tony D'Annuncio's Detroit music scene documentary, Louder Than Love: The Grand Ballroom Story, and Danny Garcia's Looking for Johnny, the Legend of Johnny Thunders.
Early bird badges were initially only going to be on sale until July 1, but the sales have been extended until August 16.

CBGB Festival 2012 (more by Chris La Putt)
As mentioned, the CBGB Festival is returning to various NYC venues this year from October 9 to 13. In addition to the music portion, there will also be a film portion of the festival. The hub for the film portion will be at The Landmark Sunshine Theater on E. Houston St.
Badges for the festival are on early-bird sale now through July 1, at which point the regular sale will begin and go through October 8. Walk-up badges at a higher price will also be available during the festival.

2012 brought us a new multi-venue festival in NYC - one named after legendary NYC rock club CBGB. Well, in case there was any doubt, that festival will in fact return in 2013, but much later in the year. 2012's fest went down July 5-8, outdoor show in Times Square (and a controversial Cro-Mags show) included. 2013's will happen October 9-13, right before CMJ. Sick of It All at Webster Hall in 2011 (more by Kurt Christiansen)
When word got out that Sick of It All and Cro-Mags would co-headline a show at Webster Hall on Friday July 6th as part of the CBGB Festival, my water almost broke. I didn't even bother to wait and see if BV could somehow sleaze my bald ass into that sucker; I toddled over to Ticketweb and did the right thing and ponied up for a ticket. Your man Klaus was PUMPED. However, as you may or may not know, your man Klaus is sort of a mess in the old mental-stability department and on the day of the show I had an attack of the old agoraphbees. And it wasn't because of what the show was; it could have been a show featuring Devendra Banhart fluffing pillows and I still would have succumbed to the agoraphobic explosion occurring in my brain. So rather than put myself in a loud, sweaty, crowded room I opted to stay home curled up in a ball in the middle of my living room floor. As a matter of fact, the ticket for the show is literally still sitting in my bag.
As it turns out, my attack of agoraphobia may have been more a prophecy than a sign of my own mental weakness. For, as you all must know by now, the show was called off when Harley Flanagan went on an alleged rampage of alleged self-defense (depending on who you talk to), that resulted in stab wounds and bite marks. What luck! So the show was cancelled and everyone had to go home. I've been wondering since then if Webster Hall, Ticketweb, or the event organizers would make up for the fact that nobody got to see the two bands that clearly everyone was there to see. And then, WHAM, the following message landed in my inbox today:
Thank you for your patience in waiting for this rescheduled date.I know Cro-Mags are basically hardcore legends, and I am sure I am going to get raked over the ever glowing comments coals for saying this, but I'd take CIV over them any day. So for me, even though no other bands have been announced on the line-up (Quicksand?) (Please?), this is already a more than adequate make up date. See ya there!

On September 7th, we'll be joined by our good friends and New York Hardcore legends CIV(!!), at Webster Hall with very special guests.
Due to the unfortunate events that resulted in the postponement, the Cro-Mags will not be playing.
All tickets purchased for the July 6th show through Ticketweb will be changed into WILLCALL list tickets, which means your name will be on a list at the door, and you just bring your ID - not your original ticket. Previously purchased tickets will be handled this way to avoid issues with the many people that may not have their original ticket.

Fishbone at Brooklyn Bowl - 7/8/12
Earlier this month, the CBGB Festival (plus everything else going on) made for a pretty exhausting first weekend, and to close it out, I found myself going out to see one of my favorite live bands, the eclectic, electric Fishbone at the late show at Brooklyn Bowl on July 8th (one of two shows for the band at the venue). Earlier this year their trials and tribulations were featured in the rock doc Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone.
In promotion of their new record Crazy Glue, singer/saxophonist Angelo Moore found himself sitting with The Roots on Jimmy Fallon, wailing his mighty theremin, performing on network TV for the first time in a while last Wednesday. They also played a live outdoor show in the scorching heat at Metrotech and a special all ages set for the family folk the afternoon before this Brooklyn Bowl performance Sunday night.
The first time I saw Fishbone was topping a ten band bill (including snorers King's X) at Don Hill's over ten years ago. Their great reception at Brooklyn Bowl this past Sunday gives me a feeling of an upswing in their over thirty year career. While introducing the same song, Angelo thanked The Roots, "taking a bullet" for Fishbone by playing "Lyin' Ass" Bitch upon Michelle Bachman's entrance, which was probably the most press the band has received since the 90's.
The real story of Fishbone is their live show, centered around original members Moore, who is a schizophrenic combination of Cab Calloway, Gil-Scott Heron and Iggy Pop, low down pocket groove bassist Norwood Fisher and recently returning trumpeter Dirty Walt, who started the band in South Central L.A. when they were in Junior High School. They are joined by Rocky George (ex-Suicidal Tendencies, Cro-Mags) on guitar, longtime drummer John Stewart and two younger cats, keeping the youthful vibe.
Fishbone's set was as speedy as ever, warmed up from the earlier performance, speeding through classics like "Ma and Pa" and "Everyday Sunshine" with thrashed out tenacity, including a double speed cover of Sublime's "Date Rape". Their feel good reggae flavored songs were cut with heavier tunes and theremin solos. Their composite of unfashionable genres: ska, funk, metal, new wave, hardcore and soul, makes for a crowd that is gleefully uncool, crowd surfing and moshing like Clinton was still in office. Fishbone unironically had a bunch of ladies come dance onstage with them, I guess Williamsburg really has changed.
The older, nostalgic crowd gleefully cheered on their heroes as they interwove new material, like the political title cut from their new album and the brilliant, swing-flavored "Behind My Sunglasses" with favorites like "Sunless Saturday" and their immaculate cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddy's Dead." Things can get silly at Fishbone shows; Angelo overseeing a drunk, stoned circus, but this band can seriously play (with a frontman who entertains, what a dated concept!) and is running strong when other bands would have called it quits twenty years ago.

As we were saying, original Cro-Mags member Harley Flanagan told website NYNatives that he was acting in self defense when two members of his old band were injured by him at Webster Hall on July 6th. NYNatives since posted Harley's entire statement...
"According to Harley, he was invited to the dressing room back stage and instead of being welcomed as he expected he was jumped by a group of men. "When I saw that door get pulled shut I was literally fighting for my life. I was afraid these guys were going to kick me half to death, roll me down the back steps and that no one would see it... and there would be no witnesses and that would be that....and all I could think about was getting home safe to my kids...I wanted to save my life, to protect myself and these guys were trying to do me in."Current Cro-Mags frontman John Joseph, who was also in that dressing room, has since issued another statement that starts with the line, "[Harley's] been watching too many sci-fi movies." Cro-Mags founder, Harley Flanagan himself and his attorney have told nynatives.com exclusively in a statement that everything that happened on July 6th at the CBGB's Festival Cro-Mags show at Webster Hall happened in "self defense." Harley was not the aggressor and any and all of his actions were in self defense. This statement is in direct conflict with all major media reports covering the events which happened that night.Look for an interview in the coming days via the site. It'll be interesting to hear another side of the story to what happened at Webster Hall that fateful night. Either way, we are glad to hear that his alleged target Mike "The Gook" is feeling better, though he is currently seeking donations for his medical bills. Donate if you can, details on how are below.

John Joseph addresses the crowd @ Webster Hall Friday night - 7/6/12 (video below)
Before things took a turn for the worse and got all stabby, Webster Hall hosted performances from Vision of Disorder, Sai-Nam and Absolution as part of a five band bill that would have also included Sick of It All and Cro-Mags if the CBGB Festival Friday show didn't end early. Pictures from the relatively peaceful opening to the show are in this post.
As discussed, things got ugly when ex-Cro-Mags bassist Harley Flanagan, who is known for not being happy that Cro-Mags continue without him, allegedly assaulted current Cro-Mags members with a hunting knife before the Cro-Mags set. Harley has been charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
John Joseph and his version of Cro-Mags (that was scheduled to play Webster Hall but instead got cut) issued the following statement:
WE... as a band are truly sorry for the way it all turned out in every regard even the ex-member who's family is now effected by his choices. Our prayers go out to them as well as Mike C., and the others who were hurt, but it was 'his' choice to come to our concert with a hunting knife, standing by our dressing door. Who knows what his actual intent was, obviously he wasn't there with it to cut bread for a peace offering as he was heard saying outside he was putting an end to us playing without him. Let's move on now & stop the trash-talking. Keep that PMA - that's what we are all about.PMA indeed.

John Joseph, the band's lead singer, said that Mr. Flanagan had been at odds with other members of the Cro-Mags since he left the band in 2000 and had not been permitted to rejoin.The NY Post points out:
"This dude has been a negative thorn in the side of this band forever," Mr. Joseph said. "I hope he gets what's coming to him."
Few bands were as energetic as the Cro-Mags during the heyday of the Lower East Side hard-core scene in the mid- to late 1980s. Their first record, "The Age of Quarrel," featured an illustration of a mushroom cloud on the cover and driving songs with shouted lyrics about existential fear and the limits of anarchism.
In many ways the songs were a reflection of the world as seen by Mr. Flanagan, who left school at an early age and began hanging out on the decaying streets of the Lower East Side, where rent was cheap, abandoned buildings proliferated and the drug trade flourished.
The hard-core scene gradually become less visible, said Clayton Patterson, a photographer on the Lower East Side who has documented many of the bands, but it has experienced a revival in recent years.
The crowd was waiting for the Cro-Mags on Friday night when Mr. Flanagan darted from the dressing room while yelling something that onlookers could not make out, according to a spectator, Elie Perler, 30.
Joseph warned CBGB Festival organizers that Flanagan wasn't wanted, but he wound up obtaining a press pass.For those people that "don't believe the hype", somehow have faith that this is one big government conspiracy, or that it actually wasn't Harley Flanagan that attacked two in the VIP area at "Weber Hall", you can contribute to the Free Harley Flanagan fund. 119 days to go on this crowdsourcing effort and they are currently at 0.988% towards their $50k goal. Good luck with that one.
"Get somebody on the door who knows what he looks like," Joseph said he warned. "They didn't take that threat seriously."

While it may not have actually hit triple digits on Saturday (7/7), in the easy-bake oven of asphalt, concrete and steel that is Times Square, it felt like 110 -- especially at 1PM when I arrived there for CBGB Festival's all-day free show. The heat kept attendance on the low side (I should add there was also no line at Shake Shack either on Saturday) but everybody seemed to be having a good time, bands included, for what is the very rare occasion to see live bands in such an iconic NYC setting.
The festival had two stages set up on Saturday with one on 51st, and then one on 47th St right below the TKTS booth and bleachers -- which is where Duff McKagan's Loaded were already playing as I got out of the subway. I was never much of a Guns N' Roses fan and had never listened to Loaded band before but always thought of him as the "punk" member of GN'R. Definitely Loaded swing that way and their set was a mix of Foo Fighters-ish originals and choice covers, including The Damned's "New Rose" and The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog," the latter of which featured special guest Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols (who played his own CBGB Fest show at the Living Room with CBGB Fest keynote speaker Krist Novoselic in attendance).They also did GN'R's debut single "It's So Easy" which got some fists pumping.
With no downtime between bands, I hightailed it up Broadway which was closed to traffic and served as a merch area and food truck court. I got there right as Superchunk launched into their first song and new single "This Summer" which continues their hit streak since relaunching the band two years ago. (Not that they ever went away, really.) It was too hot for the crowd to do much beyond nod enthusiastically and sing along to the band's favorites-packed set, but it didn't stop Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance from pogoing through most of the set, and Mac got off a couple of his signature jumps which could be seen from a block away. (Even when a failed launch had him tumble off the drum riser, Mac kept playing. That's how it's done.) As I said, Superchunk loaded their set with classics, including "Hyper Enough," "Driveway to Driveway," and "Slack Motherfucker," the latter of which was a treat to hear loud in Disneyfied Times Square.
I didn't stick around for the later bands which included The Hold Steady and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (who also played a secret show later that night at Cake Shop), nor did our photographer who headed up to Summerstage for Guided by Voices, but there are pictures of openers Upper West and Zulu Wave below along with more pictures of Superchunk (including setlist) and Duff McKagan's Loaded.

Guided by Voices/Cloud Nothings
One of the many shows that went down in NYC this past weekend as part of the CBGB Festival was the big, free day show at Central Park Summerstage on Saturday (7/7) with Guided by Voices, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, The War On Drugs, and Cloud Nothings. Despite the heat wave that hit NYC over the weekend, many braved the high temperatures to catch this stacked show, which was pretty packed from start to finish. Presumably because it was a 4-band bill and was a day show, the openers got pretty short sets, but nonetheless all four bands were great and little time was wasted.
Cloud Nothings kicked off the day at 3 PM with a 5-song set that relied entirely on this year's Attack on Memory. Considering how short the set was, they did manage to keep things pretty varied. Between "Separation," the interlude they prefaced it with, and the extended jam of "Wasted Days," about half of their set was instrumental, and they balanced that with the album's two poppiest tracks, "Stay Useless" and "Fall In." A hot sunny day in central park isn't exactly the appropriate place for a mosh pit or anything, but there was a good amount of dancing and singing along, especially during the closing screams of "Wasted Days."
Then The War on Drugs cooled things off with their breezy folk rock, opening strong with Slave Ambient standout, "Baby Missiles." The band's floaty atmospheres can get pretty meandering (in a good way), but are always grounded by the band's relentlessly upbeat drummer. They work in nice touches of noise and ambience, most notably doing so when the bassist played a droning trumpet through an effect laden mic before going into the anthemic "Come to the City."
Up next were The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, who immediately woke up the lazy, sweat-dripping crowd with a super energetic set, kickstarted by the driving "Heaven's Gonna Happen Now." Frontman Kip Berman doesn't let up for the entire show, rocking out through every song while bearing a spot-on delivery. They played a pretty solid mix of material off both full lengths, all of which were bright pop blasts, delivered even clearer and bigger than the increased lo-to-mid-fi production on the newer album. The band, who on Saturday were augmented by Connor from The Drums on second guitar, didn't really hit any low points and played through tons of favorites like "Young Adult Friction," "Heart In Your Heartbreak," and more.
The show wrapped up with the much-anticipated headlining set by Guided by Voices which came after multiple crowd chants of "GBV, GBV, GBV!" The band, whose influential brand of lo-fi was responsible for helping to set the groundwork that all three of the opening bands heavily work into their sound, walked on stage, cigarettes in hand, and in extremely high spirits for the appreciative crowd. They focused their set mostly on material off of their two 2012 full lengths, Let's Go Eat the Factory and Class Clown Spots a UFO, their first two albums since 2004. Because of GBV's notoriously short songs, they only took about ten minutes to bang out the same amount of songs that the opening bands played in their entire sets, and both the band and the crowd were really into it. Robert Pollard's playful stage banter was intact (he said something about how during his last Central Park show he got in trouble for throwing beer cans into the audience) and the band's on-stage demeanor was just as lively, complete with split kicks from guitarist Mitch Mitchell, and the head-nodding, singing-along bassist, Greg Demos.

A former member of the hard-core punk band the Cro-Mags attacked two of the group's current members with a hunting knife in a dressing room before a show at Webster Hall yesterday -- biting one and slashing both.The show, part of the CBGB Festival, was shut down before either Sick of it All or Cro-Mags took the stage. Its a sad day for New York Hardcore. This unity that everyone speaks about? PMA? The time for that is now.
The band was about to take the stage about 8:15 p.m. when tattooed rocker Harley Flanagan, 42, barreled through the East Village venue's VIP section toward the Cro-Mags' dressing room, sending nearly 30 guests on the balcony into a frenzy, law enforcement sources and witnesses said.
"Someone was yelling, 'Get his hands, get his hands, he's got a knife!' " witness Dave Gustav said. "Everything went nuts."
Several beefy security guards rushed to contain Flanagan, who seemed about to boil over before he entered the East Village venue.
...Flanagan, the band's former bassist and founder, suffered a broken leg by the time security finally pinned him down, witnesses said. Cops handcuffed him to a chair and took him out.
"People started booing him and throwing stuff at him," eyewitness Justin Brannan said. "His hands were handcuffed but he still gave everyone the finger."
William Berario, 45, was slashed above the eye and bitten on his cheek. Michael Couls, 33, -- the band's current bassist, who is known in the hardcore world as "The Gook" -- was cut on his arm and stomach. -
Harley, who did the stabbing, is an original member of the band that formed in 1981. John Joseph, also an original member, leads the current version of "Cro-Mags" that Harley is not in, and which John was calling "Cro-Mags (jam)" for a bit in 2008 to avoid confusion with a version of the band Harley was leading (or for legal reasons or something like that). John's version, which didn't keep the "(jam)" on their name for long, has been having much success the past few years, this CBGB Festival booking included. Harley's version hasn't been active in a while
