While the rest of the world was asking who the #$%@ Bonny Bear and Paul McCartney were, I was asking that same question of Of Monsters and Men who are playing here in April. They've already sold out their 4/5 show at Music Hall of Williamsburg and 4/6 show at Bowery Ballroom, though the Bowery show was moved to Webster Hall (tickets are still on sale, but maybe not for long). Actually, half their US tour is already sold out (all dates at the bottom of this post).
Then I remembered I had actually seen Of Monsters and Men -- who are from Iceland -- at last year's M for Montreal at teeny tiny club Casa Del Popo. Their name is a bit on the generic side which is why I think I couldn't place it. (You also see a lot of bands at festivals. It's a blur.) Anyway, here's what I wrote then:
The other Icelandic group, Of Monsters and Men, made more of an impression with their stirring folk rock that was augmented by horns and an especially fancy accordion. (It had LED switches on it.) While also similar to a lot of other sweeping ensembles (fill in your favorite here), the songs were memorable and I did wish their set had been a couple songs longer. So it goes with festivals.I don't think a folk band has snuck up like this since Mumford and Sons (or maybe The Head and the Heart).
They're already huge in Iceland (which is like being huge in Rhode Island, but still), where their debut album, My Head is an Animal, was released last year. Of Monsters and Men signed to Universal who rushed out the Into the Woods EP in America late December, which contains the KEXP hit "Little Talks". The band will be at SXSW too and are surely one of the "Bands to Watch" this year for some folks.

We've made some last minute changes to the event today, Sept 25th, due to weather concerns. We decided to move the location to an indoor location, Safe Harbor Loft in Soho. This was supposed to happen outside in Williamsburg. The address is 446 Broadway. We've also changed the times, and the event starts now at 2pm and ends at 11pm. We're super excited about this location and believe everyone will be too once they see the space.

Due to the heavy rainfall and thunderstorms forecasted by the National Weather Service over the next several days for the Philadelphia area, the POPPED! Music Festival, scheduled for Sept 23 & 24 at FDR Park, has been moved to the Liacouras Center at 1776 N. Broad Street on Temple's campus, in Philadelphia. [Popped]Tickets are still on sale.

Despite a general consensus that it's a not the greatest idea or use of his time, Peter Hook and his current band The Light continue to tour the Joy Division catalogue and will be in New York next Tuesday (9/13) for a show at Gramercy Theatre, a show that was originally supposed to be at Irving Plaza. Where last year's tour concentrated on Unknown Pleasures, this time the focus will be on Joy Division's second, final album, Closer. Some dates on this tour will still get Unknown Pleasures, though, and all tour dates are below indicating which album Peter Hook & the Light will be performing.
Back in May, Peter Hook & the Light released an EP of new versions Joy Division songs, including the unrecorded "Pictures in My Mind" plus three other songs with lead vocals by Rowetta who sang with Happy Mondays in the '90s and later placed fourth on the first UK season of Simon Cowell's X Factor. Videos for The Light's versions of "Atmosphere" (with Rowetta) and "Pictures in My Mind" (with Hook taking lead vocals) are at the bottom of this post.
Meanwhile, the rest of New Order are reuniting without Peter Hook, and that includes keyboardist/guitarist Gillian Gilbert who hasn't played with the band since the '90s. Gilbert was a part of the recording of 2001's Get Ready but bowed out of touring to take care of her and husband (and New Order drummer) Stephen Morris' daughter. Replacing Hook will be Tom Chapman, who plays in Bernard Summner's Bad Lieutenant. I wonder how low he slings his bass? This version of New Order play October 17 at Ancienne Belgique in Brussels and October 18 at La Bataclan in Paris and both shows are benefits for ailing friend of the band Michael Shamburg who produced many of the band's '80s videos. Maybe they'll stick to songs from 1992's Republic which doesn't features much of Hook's signature bass style.
Speaking of Gilbert, she and Morris (who made records as The Other Two in the early '90s) have released a new EP, Swing, under the name Gillian and Stephen on their own Hard Cheese label, consisting of house-y instrumentals originally conceived and written as a soundtrack to Anna Blessman & Peter Saville's exhibition between October 2010 and January 2011 at the Gallerie Frac Champagne-Ardenne in France. Saville designed the sleeve.
You can stream a track off the Swing EP at the bottom of this post, which is also where you can find those Peter Hook & the Light videos and tour dates.

Handsome Furs at the Great Escape in May (more by Tim Griffin)

The Handsome Furs 8/18 show at Webster Hall has been moved to Bowery Ballroom. All tickets will be honored, and are still available. THEESatisfaction have also been added as the opener.
Last time I noticed THEESatisfaction's name it was on a bill with Handsome Furs' Sub Pop labelmate Shabazz Palaces. Well, it was also just announced that THEESatisfaction, who have collaborated with Shabazz, have signed to Sub Pop too...
THEESatisfaction, the self-produced "lo-fi rebel hiphop" duo comprised of Seattle's Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White, (thankfully) accepted Sub Pop's proposal to join our eclectic family! To celebrate this union, they will be headlining the Vera Project stage at Capitol Hill Block Party today July 22nd. The group, who has released five EPs to date as well as contributed to label-mates Shabazz Palaces latest release Black Up, are expected to release their debut full-length album early next year, For now, the kind women of THEESatisfaction have decided to give you the track Do You Have the Time for free! - Sub PopYou can download that song below.
The Bowery show is part of a longer international Handsome Furs tour that includes Parlovr on some dates. Parlovr meanwhile play Mercury Lounge tonight (7/25).
Updated Handsome Furs dates & THEESatisfaction song below...
Coco66 in October 2010 (more by Andrew St. Clair)

As mentioned, Coco66 was shut down on July 9 so SBTRKT couldn't DJ after his PS1 show. We also recently mentioned that the July 23rd Pictureplane, Teengirl Fantasy, Gatekeeper show originally scheduled at Coco66 has been moved to 285 Kent. That's because Coco66 never reopened after the SBTRKT incident...
It seems that Greenpoint music venue and bar Coco66 was raided by both the NYPD and SLA for operating without a liquor license last weekend. According to reports at Paper and New York Shitty, the authorities showed up at some point Saturday night and arrested the venue's owner David Kelleran and in a scene out of prohibition, all of the booze was destroyed by the SLA when they made the bartenders pour out every last drop of about $20,000 worth of alcohol. What a waste! The bar's problems began in October, 2010 when the NYPD conducted an initial raid and lost its liquor license. Kelleran had been buying booze at retail shops for the bar's events and apparently wants to try to reopen the bar without a liquor license. [Eater]No events are currently scheduled at Coco66.

The Wake and Weekend were scheduled to play the free outdoor show at South Street Seaport this evening, July 8, 2011, but due to rain, the show has been moved to Littlefield in Brooklyn. Doors are now at 9pm, but the show is still free. Bands at 10 & 11.
Poor Chris La Putt braved the weather and went to the Seaport to capture the action. His picture of the non-event is above.
In related news, tonight's Yankees game is postponed for the same reasons and that means Derek Jeter will have to wait a little bit longer before attempting his 3000th hit.
P.S. Want to see Animal Collective for free at Merriweather Post Pavillion (the MD venue) on Saturday night? We're running a last minute contest for two tickets now at our Facebook.

Eleanor Friedberger @ Lambert's (more by Tim Griffin)

As some already know, but I just realized last night, the Eleanor Friedberger, Ida, and Rebecca Gates Northside Festival show that was scheduled to take place at St. Cecilia's Church TONIGHT (6/18), was moved to Europa.
Eleanor kicks off a proper tour in support of her Merge solo album in July. All of those dates and her new video (again), below...

Head down to Record Grouch Records to get your tickets before they disappear. The show will feature support from Humanbeast, DOGLEATHER, and 80's Hardcore.
Tickets are also still available for Lightning Bolt's appearance at Le Poisson Rouge the next day (4/28) with Pterodactyl.
All remaining Lightning Bolt dates, and some videos, including footage from their recent set at Coachella, below.

Cold War Kids' March 24th Radio City Music Hall show has been moved to Terminal 5. "All tickets will be honored." Baths and No Age are still the openers.
If you happen to be in Austin, come see Baths play the BrooklynVegan Day Party at Swan Dive/Barbarella at noon today (3/19)

I knew that Steve Ignorant saying "The only the problem is the visas" wasn't a good sign. Steve posted the following 'Emergency Annoucement' to his website:
I'm really really gutted to have to let you all know that we have to reschedule our USA and Canadian gigs. There's a delay with the issue of the visas we require to enter the USA. We hope it will all be sorted soon but we will NOT be able to make the scheduled gigs. The first show, originally scheduled for March 10th at Santos, is now the last and happening on May 8th, and the recently-added 3/26 show at Don Hill's has now been moved to 4/20 at Europa, making it the new first show of the tour.I would ask everyone to please hold onto your tickets and give us about a week to announce new dates. We will reschedule as soon as possible and tickets will be valid for the rescheduled dates, however, if you think 'fuck it, I want my money back', then do that and I will completely understand.
I know that loads of you have been planning to travel for these gigs and that rescheduling them will be a right kick in the bollocks for you. I'm really, really genuinely very sorry about this. Please understand that this situation is costing me and the band a load of emotional upset, it's not the money, it's the letting you lot down, the bands that we were going to play with, all the people that have worked so fucking hard to put this thing together and if we could have done anything to avoid it we would have. Honestly, with all my heart, there was nothing else we could do. PLEASE, if you could let other gig-goers know that it's off for now through your emails and face books or whatever means you can please do so. I know these are only typed words and words aint enough but it's all I can do. To say I feel a right xxxt would be an understatement. This is the worse thing I've ever had to do. We really appreciate your support and we will do these gigs one way or another. Here are the rescheduled dates that will be confirmed as soon as our visas are confirmed. Until the powers that be grant us entry there's nothing more I can do at the moment. Again, I'm really so sorry about all this.
Everything is tbc pending visas but we are hoping they will get issued this week.
All tickets will be good for the rescheduled shows.
Meanwhile, the 3/10 show at Santos WILL happen, but just without any Crass...
Ok,so as most of you probably know by now Steve Ignorants' "Crass" has had some visa issues and is moving their show originally scheduled for THIS THURSDAY March 10th @ Santos Party House in NYC to May 8th 2011.All rescheduled tour dates are below. However the rest of the bands on the bill WILL BE PLAYING!!!
Line up is as follows:
LEFTOVER CRACK
THULSA DOOM (reunion)
A TRUTH
and special guest maybe.Show has two ticket prices:
$5 for anyone bringing proof of either a ticket or print out proving they purchased an online ticket for Crass (and you'll still be able to use that ticket at the CRASS make-up show on May 8th).
$8 everyone else., Doors at 7pm, Show starts at 8pm

You can still catch Oh Land play a show this Wednesday at Hiro Ballroom, but if you had tickets to see Oh Land open for the reunited Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark at Webster Hall on March 8th, well you're probably not going to be happy to know that the show is now happening at the much larger Terminal 5 "due to overwhelming demand." Tickets are still on sale.

Glasser @ Williamsburg Waterfront (more by Benjamin Lozovsky)

Glasser isn't just on tour opening for Gayngs, she's playing as part of the band too. And that band is currently working its way across America for its first live shows out of Minneapolis. That's the same tour that was supposed to hit Webster Hall on October 3rd, but that show has been moved to the more intimate Bowery Ballroom. "All tickets honored" and there are even more tickets on sale for that show, and for the one happening the next day at Music Hall too.
It was also announced that the band will stop in for a TV appearance on on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon while they're here (on October 4th too). All dates, a video of Glasser playing on MPLS.TV with Gayngs, and a video of Gayngs covering The Alan Parsons Project's "Eye in the Sky", below...

Dixie Dave of Buzzov•en on stage with Weedeater (more by Markus Shaffer)

Yesterday, ticketholders for the previously discussed return of southern sludge-core legends Buzzov•en received an email giving them a refund for their ticket purchase. No, the show is NOT off. That said, it has been moved to Public Assembly on the same night (9/30) AND not only will feature support from Black Tusk, but two more bands were added to the bill. You'll also get sets by Philadelphian sludge destroyers Javelina and Mass-thrashers Ramming Speed! To add insult to injury, we're going to do the entire BrooklynVegan-presented, 18+ show for $15 (it was $35 on the boat). A link for advanced tickets is on the way (we'll update this post). You might also be able to pick one up at the doors which open at 7PM. Get there!

Asobi Seksu (by Angel Ceballos)

With the BKLYN Yard shuttered for good, many of the summer events scheduled for the space have been forced to cancel. One that's survived is the Sunday Best party, which successfully moved to Bushwick's Brooklyn Fire Proof, where it continues weekly.
Two more shows that will go on, albeit in different venues, are the August 7th Me'shell Ndegeocello show, now to happen at (Le) Poisson Rouge (tickets), and the August 21st Asobi Seksu show. That'll take place across the street from the former BKLYN Yard, at 383 Carroll St (the former home of Dumpster Pools and Glassphemy). Tickets are on sale.
Tour dates for both acts are below...

Cap'n Jazz @ Brooklyn Bowl....

Sunday was an eventful day. TheDeathSet kicked off the 'Pool Party' at Williamsburg Waterfront in the afternoon, but was quickly told to stop due to rain. The organizers got on stage and announced that the free show was moving to Brooklyn Bowl, and the race was on. Those lucky enough to get to Brooklyn Bowl quick enough were let in before the show reached capacity, but thousands of others who had planned on seeing Lightning Bolt, No Age... and the only NYC appearance of the reunited Cap'n Jazz, were out of luck.
Luckily Cap'n Jazz was also playing that night at Maxwell's in NJ, and No Age were playing Death By Audio, so a few more people got to see each of them (especially Cap'n Jazz) (though you had to decide between Cap'n Jazz and Universal Order of Armageddon).
Back to Brooklyn Bowl though...
"Cap'n Jazz was amazing, no better word for it. Tim Kinsella's stage presence was ridiculous and prickish in the best way possible. When people jumped on the stage to crowd surf, he'd push them before they were ready. He rolled on the crowd while he sang, grabbed the shoe off one guy as he floated past, held the French horn comically high above him when he played, and was just all around entertaining. Davey von Bohlen was also really into it. He thrashed on the guitar, rocked out with the drummer, and was having a blast.Hopefully Cap'n Jazz announce more dates for those who missed them. The audience loved it too and knew every word. A high note was during "In the Clear" when Kinsella was supposed to scream the alphabet. He couldn't seem to find his microphone in time and everyone picked up the slack, "A! B! C!" Kinsella shrugged.
"Oh Messy Life" and "Little League" were other high points to the show, the audience seemed to go most crazy for Cap'n Jazz's only cover song, "Take On Me." People danced and screamed the words, the same words Kinsella read from a paper as he sang." [NY Press]
For No Age, this was the second year in a row that they played a Pool Party in Brooklyn Bowl due to rain,
More pictures and some Cap'n Jazz videos from Sunday's show at Brooklyn Bowl (and Williamsburg Waterfront), below...

the race to Brooklyn Bowl

Chris got to Williamsburg Waterfront today just as they were making the announcement that things were moving to Brooklyn Bowl due to the rain. He, along with more people than could fit in the new venue, then raced to the new spot. He made it in, but only stayed for No Age who went on at 5:30. After that he left to make room for someone else who might want to catch Cap'N Jazz and Lightning Bolt more than him.
The rest of the show (which is still happening as this is being typed) is safe in Leia's hands (photographically speaking). Chris's pictures continue below...
