In the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks that killed 90+ fans at an Eagles of Death Metal show, the band have donated the publishing and master use of their song "I Love You All The Time" to The Sweet Stuff Foundation. They're challenging iTunes, Spotify and other sellers to donate the proceeds to charity, and for other bands to cover the song, or offer up their own song to covered for charity. They're calling it the "The Play it Forward Initiative."
One notable musician to do so is Dean Ween. He's known Josh Homme for a long time, as Ween toured with both Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age in the '90s. Says Ween (aka Mickey Melchiondo):
When I heard about the Paris attacks I broke down and called him immediately and surprisingly he answered. Finding out that Dave Catching was alive and unharmed was one of the biggest reliefs of my life. You can listen to Dean Ween's cover of "I Love You All the Time" below.
When Josh asked me to cover this tune, I dropped what I was doing on the most important (to me anyway) gig night of my life. I was debuting the tunes from my forthcoming Dean Ween Group album. I came to the studio with our drummer Ray Kubian (who is a great singer as well) and I had a concept - one sample of handclaps and 8 tracks of grunting in the rhythm of the song and scat singing. I laid down a bass track for an anchor or a guide, sped the song up to 150 beats per minute when the original was about 115. One acoustic guitar, and Ray taking the lead vocal. It went perfectly -- we used every track that we recorded. I then called Chris Shaw, who produced Ween's White Pepper album and mixed Moistboyz IV. He is the best producer and engineer I know and he dropped his Saturday Thanksgiving travel plans to mix it for me.
My Morning Jacket also covered "I Love You All the Time" live on the final of their four nights at NYC's Beacon Theatre (11/29). They asked for a moment of silence in memory of the Paris victims before playing it. Video of that cover is below, and look for a set of pictures from the first night of their Beacon run soon.
Ween, meanwhile, are reuniting for some live shows in 2016.
Indie labels Castle Face, Famous Class and In the Red (which have all released records by Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall) are teaming up to auction off rare vinyl test pressings to raise money for charity. They include releases by Ty and Thee Oh Sees, as well as Parquet Courts, White Fence, Fuzz, Jay Reatard, Black Lips, Wand, and lots more. To make them even more desirable, most of these test presses are signed or feature original art from the bands. John Dwyer hand painted all of his Castle Face releases himself. Pretty cool.
Proceeds from the Castle Face auction go to Pathway Recuperative Care; proceeds from the Famous Class auction and In the Red auction go to the Save the Music Foundation. The auctions run through March 22 and you can check out all the items up for bid below.
Mac's Vans in action at 4Knots 2014 (more by Chris La Putt) / Ebay picture
Would you like to own Mac DeMarco's old Vans? He's selling them on Ebay for charity:
I'm selling an old pair of my shoes. I've John Hancocked the left shoe. Will anyone buy an old stinky pair of shoes? I don't know. lets wait and see. I'll probably throw some other crap in the box before shipping it, I dunno what.Bids on Mac DeMarco's old Vans are already up to $7,900.00 as of this posting with six days left in the auction. As he wrote above, all proceeds are going to the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. Ebay also has an option where you can ask the seller questions, which people have been doing, and Mac's been answering. Some highlights:
If you're one of those kids who tried to take them off my feet while I was crowd surfing at some point this year, nice try jackass. But hey, here's another opportunity for you to have them.
All of the profit will go to Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls.
Q: Ever stepped on dog shit in these? Can I even say dog shit on here? If so, thats awesome of eBay. Hope its not censored and you do know what I'm saying :)If you're wondering how they smell, there's a video that Mac shot with his girfriend, Kiki, and you can watch that below.

A: Don't really kick hippies that much. definitely kicked it with some hippies in these

The goal of the Everything is New project is to empower the children of Light of Love Children's Home, many of whom have been rescued from bonded labour, child prostitution, homelessness and abject poverty. The project creates the opportunity for the children to 'star' in the cultural forms they themselves consider most meaningful - popular music and cinema. The Everything is New project has resulted in two albums, both of which are out January 20: Sun Choir, which was composed and recorded by Scottish art-pop band Marram with the kids of Southeast India's Light of Love Children's Home and features guest appearances from Jarvis Cocker, Owen Pallett, Irvine Welsh and more; and BOATS where artists such as Four Tet, Rustie, Dan Deacon, YACHT, Bear in Heaven, Deerhoof's Greg Saunier, Max Tundra, Gang Gang Dance and more took samples of the children and built songs around them.
Proceeds from the project go to the charity Scottish Love in Action which feeds, clothes, houses, educates and provides medical care for over 500 children through the Light of Love Home and School. You can stream Rustie, YACHT, Jarvis Cocker and Four Tet's tracks below.
There's also a 70-minute feature film that's included with physical copies of the Sun Choir album. You can watch a short and a not so short making of videos below...

I've tweeted a lot about this over the past two weeks, and mentioned it in some posts, but one easy place to help out for residents of Park Slope, Windsor Terrace and the surrounding areas is at the Park Slope Armory shelter (usually a YMCA) which is located on 15th Street between 7th & 8th (in Brooklyn, you can't miss it). The place is full of displaced, elderly and disabled residents of the Rockaways.
If in doubt, just stop in and ask them what they need. Bring a coffee and some healthy food for the staff. They might send you right to a quick orientation and put you to work or they might tell you to come back later. They might be accepting donations of certain items. They'll let you know. BUT, they've also gotten much more organized as the days go on, and you can now also sign up in advance for a shift. There's one sheet for Friday/Saturday and another now for Sunday/Monday (more sheets to follow). UPDATE: here is the sheet for Tuesday/Wednesday (11/13-11/14).
They can use 50 volunteers a day and 40 at night, especially ones that can speak Russian. Volunteers help with general support, food preparation, daily routines, meals, social support and logistics. Wear comfortable clothes. No photos. No kids. Have fun!
Update: Check out a list of items they need at the armory below...

Envy's As Serenity Calls Your Name single art
One of Japan's greatest exports, Envy, are doing something to give a little back to their homeland.
Japan's legendary post-whatever powerhouse ENVY have recorded a brand new song specifically to benefit relief efforts for the devastating earthquake that struck Japan earlier this year. It will take years - likely decades even, - to rebuild the affected areas. This single will be available exclusively on iTunes so that we can minimize overhead costs to insure that 100% of the proceeds from each sale will go towards relief efforts. The song, "As Serenity Calls Your Name" is on on sale now and it's a characteristically epic track that tops the seven-minute mark, so the ROI on this jam is high. Fans of anything from Thursday to Mogwai to Russian Circles, take note and pick up a copy if interested.
They're only really mentioning Dean, Gene (who will sing the National Anthem), Glenn McClelland (who will play organ) & Josh (who is not part of the reunited Kyuss), but I think that's enough reason to go to this Ween hometown charity event on Sunday (10/2). New Hope, PA is a beautiful place to visit anyway if you haven't been.
More Ween events, including Halloween at Hammerstein Ballroom, listed below...
Estimated Value: Priceless... and the bidding is currently at $1900. Other items for sale at "Crafts for a Cause" include a Chan Marshall (Cat Power) "I Love You" painting, an Aziz Ansari caricature, Natalie Portman's worn shoes, an Adam Green t-shirt, a Kimya Dawson tote bag, a Feist shirt, a Devendra Banhart painting, plus stuff by Regina Spektor, Mars Volta, Fleet Foxes, Tegan & Sara, The Strokes, Vampire Weekend, Sia, Norah Jones, and Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear's childhood guitar....

Issue Project Room during a benefit w/ Moby in April (more by Toby Tenenbaum)
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz has generously granted $1,133,000 to ISSUE's capital campaign to renovate 110 Livingston! The Issue Project Room, which currently runs most of its programs in the Old American Can Factory, is still trying to raise enough funds to perform the necessary reonovations on the 110 Livingston space. Last year, the organization was awarded a rent free 20 year lease on the theater at 110 Livingston from the city.
We are humbled, honored, and inspired to have been selected as grant recipients for capital support. This award provides us with critical funding towards the $1.725 million necessary to complete a first phase of construction designed to: bring the jewel box theater space to code; install the necessary systems for soundproofing and performance; make renovations; and begin presenting as early as Fall 2010.
Once renovated, the new space at 110 will be home to more than 4,000 programs reaching more than 1,000,000 people across the next two decades. We are overjoyed at being so close to realizing this historic opportunity. -Issue Project Room
ABC No Rio in Manhattan just landed a very similar deal.
Tonight (7/10) Issue Project Room hosts the feedback choir of Lesley Flanigan with Luke Dubois on laptop. Issue Project has a full upcoming schedule, which includes a Saturday, July 25th show with Michael Gira and Wooden Wand. Gira will "be playing many unrecorded songs (to be included on Gira's next album, a Swans/Angels of Light hybrid) as well as songs from the Angels of Light and Swans catalog."
The New York Times talks more about Issue Project Room's money. Check out some of that below...
Jane's Addiction @ Sasquatch 2009 (more by Chris Graham)
A Letter from Trent Reznor:Spots are left for the shows coming up at Jones Beach, PNC Bank Arts Center, and Camden.
I am very happy to announce the inclusion of a really cool VIP package for Jane's Addiction fans that is strictly limited - so if this unique offer sounds cool to you, act quickly.
Since this fundraiser began, the Jane's guys have been wanting to contribute somehow and they've come up with something really cool. These guys actually set up and play for a good chunk of time in a room backstage to warm up and jam together BEFORE they hit the stage. Jane's stuff, covers, who knows. What they've come up with is this:
For $1,000. PER PERSON, they'll allow 10 guests per show (strictly limited) to come backstage and hang out with them while they play in their practice room (literally standing right next to them in a small, intimate living-room type environment), grab autographs and then watch Jane's Addiction from the side of the stage if you'd like.
Please note: some of this takes place the same time NIN is onstage, so realize you will be missing a PORTION of NIN's show if you participate in this.
If you're a Jane's fan, this is an incredibly rare opportunity to see and meet these guys in action close up like you've never seen before.
All proceeds from this will go to help Eric De LA Cruz get a new heart and a new chance at life. Eric is of the many left behind by a broken, uncaring health-care system.
Perry got hit in the head with a water bottle cap at the June 1st MA show, and he got pissed, as you can see in the video below (he gets hit 50 seconds in)....
