!!! aboard the SS Coachella, December 2012 (more by Greg Cristman)

!!! on the Coachella Cruise, December 2012 (more by Greg Cristman)

Fresh off the (Coachella) boat, !!! have announced details of their new album, THR!!!ER, which will be out April 30 on Warp. A ballsy title for sure (and kind of genius) and guitarist Mario Andreoni explains:
Thriller didn't merely come to represent the selling of a lot of records...it became synonymous with an artist(s)' and/or genre(s)' artistic high-water mark. INXS' Kick is the Australian Thriller...Alanis's Jagged Little Pill is the Canadian Thriller...Wham's Make It Big is the blow-dryer's Thriller...every recording by the 13th Floor Elevators is the dosed-man's Thriller...Sister Ray by Velvet Underground is the Thriller of musical fever dreams. One day at the studio, Nic [Offer, vocalist] drew THR!!!ER on a napkin and I liked it...then we made our THR!!!ERThe album was produced by the very busy Jim Eno of Spoon who gathered the far-flung band members who now live all over the globe. Unlike previous albums where songs were written during in-studio jam sessions, !!! came to the recordings with songs ready. Says frontman Nic Offer, "We've never tried to make the same record twice, we might have accidentally, but we've always tried to push on. For this one it felt like we definitely shoved off from the shore."
You can check out THR!!!ER's cover art, track list and a video trailer below...

Sleigh Bells / !!! / "ladies night" @ SS Coachella, 12/22/2012

Here are shots from the final day of the second voyage of S.S. Coachella that went down at the end of December. Though most of the boat was a little partied out from the wild day in Jamaica (and afterparty) the day before, people got back in the spirit for Girl Talk, Sleigh Bells and !!!. For the latter's final number, !!! invited members of Warpaint, Father John Misty and others for a group sing-a-long. After that it was a "ladies night" party that made sure everyone was bleary eyed for their trip home the next days. Says our photographer Greg Cristman, "Amazing that no one fell overboard."
You can check out pictures from day 1 HERE, day 2 HERE, day 3 HERE. More pics from day 4 are below.

!!! at MHOW - 12/13/12

!!! came to NYC for a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg this past Thursday (12/13) with Sinkane (who DJs Bowery Hotel tonight [12/17] and opens for Solange on Tuesday [12/18]) and Yellow Dogs. The venue never got too packed, but but !!! aways put on a fun show. (Sinkane and Yellow Dogs are no slouches either.) Pictures from the show are in this post.
You can also check out what albums and songs were !!!'s favorites of the year, and more pics from MHOW below...

!!! at Sasquatch 2011 (more by Josh Darr)

As previously discussed, !!! will be in town for a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday (12/13) with Sinkane (who will open for Solange next week) and Yellow Dogs. Tickets for the show are still available and we're also giving away a pair. Details on how to enter to win are below.
Meanwhile, !!! frontman Nic Offer recently spoke to us about his favorite albums and songs of the year. Like Nic's own music, the list skews mainly electronic and electronic-tinged pop, and he makes room for a few other interesting inclusions too. Nic is also now the second artist we've spoke to to include the various artists compilation, Personal Space: Electronic Soul 1974-1984. You can check out the whole list below.
!!! at Sasquatch 2011 (more by Josh Darr)

Music Hall of Williamsburg will play host to a very solid bill on December 13 with dance punks !!! and now DFA-signed Renaissance man Sinkane. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday, October 12 at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (10/10) at noon. The only other announced dates for !!! at the moment are two California shows this weekend.
Sinkane, on the other hand, has a number of shows scheduled, including some appearances during CMJ. He'll play Zebulon on October 18 with Superhuman Happiness and the official Inland Empire Touring showcase at Union Pool on October 20 with Slowdance, We Can't Enjoy Ourselves, and Weeknight. No advance tickets for either of those shows at the moment but there will be tickets at the door, or you can try to get in using your CMJ badge.
As mentioned, he also plays a post-CMJ show at Brooklyn Bowl on October 23 with Zongo Junction and Pegasus Warning. That show is free with RSVP or $5 at the door. Not long after that, he'll play Bowery Electric on November 1 with ESG and DJ Conquerrah. Back in June, dance-punk legends ESG played what they said was their last NYC show ever at Le Poisson Rouge. Now they're saying this Bowery Electric show will be their last NYC show. Hmm... Tickets for ESG's second take at a final show are on sale now.
A list of all dates and a couple videos are below.

Concert cruises are all the rage lately, and this is in fact real.
Indio, CA music festival Coachella continues for two weekends in April, 2013. But just because they've decided to keep the fest in Indio, doesn't mean they can't take it on a couple of cruises as well. As seen in the picture above, S.S. Coachella will set set sail off of the Bahamas from December 16-19 and off of Jamaica from December 19-23. The lineup (thus far at least) includes Pulp, Hot Chip, Yeasayer, James Murphy (DJ set), Grimes, Cloud Nothings, Killer Mike, El-P, Sleigh Bells, Father John Misty, and more.
Holy Ship sails in January too.

Brooklyn's My Best Fiend are set to release their debut LP, In Ghostlike Fading, next week (2/21) via Warp, though you can buy it now on iTunes.
They last played when they opened for The Hundred in the Hands at Glasslands late last month (1/27). How was that show? CMJ said their set was "one of the most impressive performances" of the night.
They've got another NYC show coming up at Le Poisson Rouge on March 1 with TEEN and No Ordinary Monkeys (DJ). Tickets for that show are on sale now. More detais to be announced soon, including SXSW.
My Best Fiend's new album features guest vocals from Shannon Funchess of Light Asylum, who just announced an album, tour, and LPR show too.
And speaking of Warp, Squarepusher plays Webster Hall on March 15th, BrooklynVegan is proud to present the NYC debut of Kwes at Glasslands on March 10th, and !!! have a bunch of dates coming up including an April run with Shabazz Palaces. That tour doesn't hit NYC, though the two artists play Philly together right after Shabazz Palaces plays two NYC shows.
All !!! tour dates and a stream of My Best Fiend's "Cracking Eggs" below...

Wilco / Guided By Voices

"Wilco never makes the second record twice, which makes it doubly remarkable that so many of them are tremendous. As formidable as frontman Jeff Tweedy's catalog is, the sonically inventive rock band really stands out on stage -- the place where extreme technical skill meets the chemistry and rousing showmanship of passionate rock veterans. Of course, it helps that the group has the luxury of drawing highlights from seven very different records when it performs. To see Wilco on stage is to hear the best of the best."Listen to Wilco's entire 2-hour Memorial Day Sasquatch set at NPR (listen to GbV's there too). Wilco's entire setlist is listed below.
And with this post, our 2011 Sasquatch basically concludes. Previous posts contain The Decembersts, Noah and the Whale, Rebecca Gates, Day 3 pictures, Archers of Loaf, Day 2 pictures, and more Day 2 pics with Day 1 too. The rest of the pictures from Day 4, below...

Here are a few things that happened on Coachella Day 1:
- it was hot.
- lots of celebrities, like Coachella regular Danny Devito, were walking around
- The Black Keys, Kings of Leon and the Chemical Brothers were the big headlining acts of the day (all on the main Coachella Stage)
- people wore funny outfits, and sometimes NSFW outfits.
- people sinned.
- Lauryn Hill started late, but not too late (aka she still got to play).
- Cee Lo showed up very late, apologized, but acted mad he had to play a short set. He used that anger to give his set-closing hit "Fuck You" context.
- Odd Future predictably drew a huge crowd, and were joined by Pharell.
- Odd Future's set resulted in a possible broken nose (again)
- There were 20 arrests
- Paul McCartney was there, and along with Usher, stood on stage during Afrojack's set.
- YACHT played
- Many other people played, and lots of other stuff happened too, as you can see in the pictures below...
What were your highlights of Coachella Day One? Are you there or watching the stream?
Photographer David Andrako managed to catch 18 acts and other random stuff in between on Friday. His pictures from the whole day continue below...

Adventure (by Tim)

Braids (by Tim)

Braids and Adventure are on tour with Toro y Moi now. The three bands play sold out shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg and Bowery Ballroom on Sunday (4/10) and Monday (4/11).

Thanks to everyone who stopped by, to all the bands who played and to Ramesh for DJing. Sorry to Bass Drum of Death for not getting to play due to some confusion. Thanks to the cast of Workaholics for stopping by and for doing some hosting (catch their show on Comedy Central now!). Thanks also to Izzoz, Sensible Portions, Honest Tea, VegAustin, Raw Revolution, NadaMoo, Firefly Vodka, Line 6, Korg, Vox, Blackstar, Nudie Jeans, and ASCAP. Thanks to everyone else that helped and to anyone I forgot.

Pete & the Pirates @ SXSW Convention Center

Wednedsay, Thursday, Friday, and now Saturday...
"This is the weirdest gig we've ever played. I feel like we're in Las Vegas and you are all eating dinner." Pete & the Pirates singer Thom Sanders was remarking on the weirdness of playing the Dot Com Day Stage at 1PM in the Austin Convention Center. Folding chairs were set up near the stage, there were couches around the periphery, more the kind of place where some CEO reveals annual earnings than hearing some sprightly indie pop.
Yet Pete & the Pirates made it work, 'cause they're so damn good. (The bloody mary I was drinking probably also helped.) They charmed the pants off the room. We got a smattering of songs from their first album, and a few from One Thousand Pictures which is due out in May. This was a great way to start my final day of SXSW.
From there it was off to our final day party of the week, which we were throwing with our friends at the M for Montreal festival. The line-up was pretty sick, if I do say, with !!!, Weekend, Austra, Braids, PS I Love You, Braids, Trail of Dead, Owen Pallet and more. The weather had cooled off a bit making both the outside stage at Barbarella and Swan Dive more comfortable than Friday and it was a great afternoon of music. Highlights for me: Versus, who I'd seen the night before, a kick-ass set from !!! who I don't think I've seen play in three years, an abbreviated but great Suuns, and another killer set from Weekend. (Look for an interview with Weekend soon.) I wish I'd gotten there in time to see Montreal's quirky, funky Misteur Valaire who I heard were the perfect lead-in to !!! (editor's note: they were!).

!!! @ the BrooklynVegan/MFM Day Party Saturday

By the time Saturday rolled around in Austin, I was admittedly starting to tire of the massive crowd that had been occupying 6th Street since I arrived on Tuesday. That didn't stop me from hitting up as much live music as I could in that final day though. Thanks to an insane amount of free day parties, this was a relatively easy task, albeit an exhausting one.
To start things off, Jonny Corndawg (who has a Brooklyn Bowl residency coming up) was playing a Fiji Water-sponsored, artist-only brunch in the upstairs of Barbarella where the BrooklynVegan/M For Montreal Day party was happpening downstairs (with !!!, Trail of Dead & more). Though I've seen Corndawg several times before, it goes without saying that he's an entertaining performer/songwriter, and his intimate set was well received by the early morning brunch-eating fans.
After that I jetted downstairs to the outside Barbarella stage to catch one of the weirder performances I'd seen all week. Misteur Valaire, a five piece Canadian dance-punk outfit energetically jumped around stage, switching instruments on nearly every song, and often breaking out into choreographed dance sequences. To say it was odd is an understatement, but nonetheless I had a smile on my face the entire time. It was also a great way to embrace us for the crazy dance party that ensued when !!! (chk-chk-chk) took the stage next.
Nic Offer, easily the greatest short-shorts wearing frontman in indie rock, made no hesitation in getting the increasingly packed outdoor crowd dancing for !!!'s set. Though he did express his dismay of there being a couch on the dance floor (yes, for some reason there was a couch in the middle of the dance floor), Offer used it as a prop to jump into the middle of the crowd several times. And their tribute to the late Nate Dogg, a cover of "Get Up", was a great way to conclude their set.
Up next on the Barbarella outdoor stage was Austin's own Trail of Dead, who initially suffered from sound/equipment problems, but eventually got it together to play a pulverizing set to the still packed outdoor stage. Though short in length, it was in no way short on enthusiasm, and Trail of Dead blasted through their set as they flung themselves around on stage. Bassist Autry Fulbright III even broke a bass string towards the end of their ecstatic concluding song, a feat I've rarely seen accomplished.
After an ill-fated trip to the free Mess With Texas party where I hoped to catch the Dead Milkmen and Odd Future (the location was so dusty and packed it was unbearable), I was able to make it into the official Red Ryder SXSW showcase at the Central Presbyterian Church on 8th Street in time to witness a jaw dropping performance from Sharon Van Etten.
Sharon Van Etten @ the Red Ryder SXSW showcase

Van Etten was one of the more talked about performers of the entire SXSW festival, and I couldn't have been happier to catch her set after missing her at the BrooklynVegan showcase earlier in the week. The church made for absolutely breathtaking acoustics. Members of Wye Oak and TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone watched from the balcony. I cannot stress it enough, do not miss her upcoming show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 16th.
Portland, Oregon super-sized group Typhoon followed Sharon Van Etten, and though that may have been the problem, it was also a reminder that often less is more. Not to say they didn't put on a heartfelt performance, or that the massive church setting wasn't perfect for their big, full sound, but their enthusiasm at times came off as a bit much. Though if you're a fan of the Polyphonic Spree or We're From Barcelona, Typhoon is likely right up your alley.
After catching them at the Bowery Ballroom the week prior, I was definitely excited to see the Rural Alberta Advantage again. They didn't disappoint. Stating that they played the same venue at SXSW in 2009, keyboardist Amy Cole expressed a slight feeling of déjà vu, but said they were happy to be performing in such a space for a second time. What was apparently a repeat of that '09 performance, the band returned for an encore of a stripped down performance of their song "Good Night" surrounded by the crowd, completely un-mic'd and unplugged. It was an entrancing and honest moment from the Canadian band, and a perfect way to end a long, long week of live music where I also caught sets by The Kills and Atlas Sound.
Pictures from everything mentioned above, below...

TV on The Radio at Roots Picnic 2009 (more by Tim Griffin)

Tickets are still available for TV On The Radio's date with Radio City Music Hall on 4/13, and since we last spoke the band announce many more tour dates. They kick things off on 4/8 in Philly and all dates are listed below.
Those heading to Austin this month don't need to wait as long. Spin has announced their annual SXSW party (that Hole played last year) and the lineup includes TV on the Radio, The Kills, OMD, The Vaccines, OFF!, and the Smith Westerns on the main stage, with MNDR, Young the Giant, Dom, Electric Child, and 28 North holding down the indoor stage. The free show goes down on 3/19 at The East Side Drive Inn (where Pitchfork's #OFFLINE festival will be the two days prior) and will feature appearances from The Dead Milkmen, Odd Future, !!!, Surfer Blood, The Dodos, Deer Tick, and many others. Off! hits the road with Trash Talk soon after SXSW, and play Santos Party House on 3/26 (tickets are still on sale).
This now makes three shows total for the Dead Milkmen who also have shows coming up in Brooklyn and Chicago.
All TVOTR tour dates, the MWTX lineup (thus far) and the flyer is below.
