Aretha

Like she's done in past winters, Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin will come to NYC this winter for a 2-night stand at the historic Radio City Music Hall on January 17 and 18. Tickets for those shows go on sale Friday (12/6) at 11 AM. Her only other announced date at the moment is a show in her hometown of Detroit this month (12/21).

Besides those two shows, Aretha will be appearing in public even sooner at this year's National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in DC, which takes place on Friday (12/6) at The Ellipse, not far from the White House. Both Barack and Michelle Obama will be there, and other performers include Janelle Monae, The Avett Brothers, and more. The ceremony will stream live online at 4:30 PM.

All upcoming dates are listed, along with a video from her 2012 Radio City show, below...

Winters Eve

On Monday, November 28, 2011 the Lincoln Square Business Improvement District and presenting sponsor Time Warner will host the Twelfth Annual Winter's Eve at Lincoln Square - New York City's largest holiday festival! Winter's Eve kicks off with a neighborhood tree lighting ceremony and features free entertainment, food tastings, in-store activities and shopping around and about this colorful and vibrant neighborhood.
Stores, restaurants, cultural organizations and public spaces in the district will be buzzing with activities for both children and adults. At the same time, sidewalks along Broadway from Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle to 68th Street will be alive with performers, street musicians, jugglers, stilt-walkers and more, making for a festive fun-filled stroll through the streets of this dynamic Upper West Side neighborhood.

WHEN: Monday, November 28, 2011, 5:30 PM, Rain, Snow or Shine!

WHERE: The celebration begins with a neighborhood tree lighting ceremony at Dante Park at Broadway& 63rd Street and continues along Broadway from Time Warner Center to 68th Street.

Arlo Guthrie is playing the tree lighting. The Klezmatics are playing in the dance tent. Catherine Russell is playing in the American Folk Art Museum. Marching bands will be playing on the street, and much more.

Robert Franklin as Santa @ South Street Seaport last year (more by Chris La Putt)
Carolers

The South Street Seaport will ring in the holiday spirit on Friday, November 25th when the 28th Annual Seaport Chorus Tree Lighting Spectacular lights up the cobblestone streets of the Seaport's Historic District.

TODAY Show personality and fashion expert Jill Martin will host one of New York City's most beloved holiday traditions, with a 40-foot tree serving as the centerpiece of a seven-minute "Sparkle at the Seaport" light show spectacular. Festivities will kick-off with performances by the Darren Wallis Jazz Trio and the Soul Tigers Marching Band. All-male barbershop chorus, The Big Apple Chorus, will perform seasonal favorites, and costumed characters will help Santa Claus countdown to the tree lighting ceremony. To round-off the evening, Ronnie Spector will give a special performance, making it a night to remember for the whole family.

Last year's celebration included an appearance by Darlene Love. Last year was also sadly the last for Santa Robert Franklin. The 85 year old Santa, who was the Seaport mall's Santa every year since 1989, passed away at the age of 85 earlier this year. RIP Robert.

Ronnie Spector is also having the "Best Christmas Party Ever!" at the Cutting Room in NYC on 12/16 and 12/17...

This year the beloved tradition of twenty five years continues at the new Cutting Room located at 44 west 32nd street in Manhattan.

You can expect all the big Christmas hits-and Ronnie has the largest catalog of Christmas classics of any recording artist including 'Sleigh Ride' (#3 past decade) and 'Frosty the Snowman' (#17 past decade) along with her Ronette hits and cult classics. But what makes Ronnie's Christmas Party so special and endearing is her off-the-cuff patter and her childhood remembrances of Christmas and Santa in New York .

As the New York Times observed, "It's hard to think of a more appealing angel to welcome the holiday season than Ms. Spector."

Ronnie will also be at the Mohegan Sun on 12/23 and at The Proctors Theatre in Schenectady, NY on 3/24/2012.

National Christmas Tree
National Christmas Tree

The countdown is on until the lighting of the National Christmas tree!

My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James will have the honor of performing at the 2010 National Christmas Tree Lighting. The event will be held [today] December 9th at 5pm EST on the Ellipse at President's Park in Washington DC. He will be joined by fellow performers B.B. King, Sara Bareilles, Maroon 5, and Jackie Evancho, and the evening will be hosted by rapper/actor Common. You can watch the ceremony live at www.thenationaltree.org or on public television throughout December. My Morning Jacket is currently recording a new full-length album, which will be released in 2011.
Aside from the news on the tree-lighting, there's a few interesting things in the above statement: Jim James is playing for the President and is recording a new LP with MMJ, former battle-rhymer Common is non-threatening enough to be a TV show host on PBS, and BB King, despite numerous facebook and twitter hoaxes, is alive.

As a matter of fact, BB King, who did not have a stroke, will begin another tour of the United States on New Years Eve in Atlantic City. The tour stretches into the end of April, and he tags Wellmont Theater on 1/6 along the way. Full tour dates for (not zombified) BB King are below, along with some videos...
