While Twinkies have a reputation for an unlimited shelf life, the company that makes the junk food may not not.I won't be running out and stocking up on any Twinkies. I mean, they're gross, but I can't help feeling nostalgic for the products that poisoned my body as a child and the ads that helped them do it! Continue the trip down memory lane and/or feeling hungry and/or disgusted and/or find some more ironic t-shirt ideas, below...
Hostess Brands, the bankrupt maker of cream-filled pastries like Twinkies and Ho Hos, said on Friday that it planned to wind down its operations. The decision comes a week after one of the company's biggest unions went on strike to protest a labor contract.
Friday's move could spell the end of Hostess, a company that has endured wars, countless diet fads and even an earlier Chapter 11 filing. But the liquidation may not mean the end of its signature product, the Twinkie, with its cake exterior and cream filling. The confection -- originally banana flavored, rather than the vanilla of today -- could find new life under a different owner, if the company auctions off its brands and assets.
In the short term, Twinkies may be in short supply. The last batches rolled off Hostess production lines early Friday morning, according to Tom Becker, a company spokesman, and no new products will be made for the time being. [NY Times]

Tom Morello @ Newport Folk Fest 2009 (more by Jim Brueckner)
Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello has announced plans to perform at the Occupy Wall Street protest at noon [today] in Manhattan. Morello, who has previously performed at the Occupy Los Angeles rally, will play a solo set as the Nightwatchman.Today (10/13) is also the first day of NY Comic Con & Anime Fest over at the Javits Center. Tom Morello performs in the convention center tonight with Z-Trip as part of the con's kickoff concert.
"The Nightwatchman will Occupy Wall Street [today] at noon, adding one more voice to the growing chorus of millions demanding economic justice at home and around the globe," Morello tells Rolling Stone. "And I'll be playing some songs. Likely in the rain."
Morello will be the third major act to perform at the protest. Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum and rapper Talib Kweli have recently played impromptu sets at the protest site. Earlier this week, Kanye West visited the scene, but did not perform. [Rolling Stone]
We get why the Rage Against the Machine guitarist would show up at Occupy Wall St, but why Comic Con? Well, Comixcorner.com says:
Tom Morello's graphic novel Orchid, which tells the tale of a 16-year-old street prostitute in a dystopian future, will be released in twelve issues through Dark Horse Comics will be on sale October 12th. Orchid features a variant cover by the well-known and influential street artist Shepard Fairey, with interior art by Scott Hepburn (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic).Other guests at Comic Con include Jon Glaser, David Cross, Chris Elliot, Carrie Brownstein (who is in tour with Wild Flag), Jon Benjamin, Janeane Garofalo, Judah Friedlander, Kevin Smith, Patton Oswalt, Fred Armisen, Mark Hamill, and many more. (Fred and Carrie will be promoting Portlandia)
"Orchid is part Suicide Girl, part Joan of Arc, who becomes the Spartacus of Whores in a story that merges the epic scope of Lord of the Rings with the politics of street terrorism." - Tom Morello
Headlined by DJ Z-Trip, the concert is free to all VIP's and 4-Day ticket holders BUT seating is first come, first served and will be extremely limited due to size of the auditorium and popularity of the event. Ultimate Access, Special Access and Anime Access VIP ticket holders will be guaranteed to get into the show first; then, 4-Day ticket holders will be let in until the auditorium is full. The concert is open to all 4-Day ticket holders on a first come, first served basis and we cannot guarantee that all 4-Day ticket holders that want to attend the show will be able to get in.
"I'm stoked and honored to be playing alongside Tom Morello at the New York Comic Con. He's one of my favorite guitarists of all time, and I've always admired the level of consciousness he brings to the table. This show is gonna be great. Can't wait to read his new comic too." - DJ Z-Trip
Tom Morello is appearing courtesy of Dark Horse Comics, New York Comic Con and Midtown Comics - who will be selling Orchid #1 exclusively at the Kick-Off Concert.

Gary Panter is an illustrator, painter, Panter, designer and part-time musician whose name is synonymous with Pee Wee's Playhouse, underground comics, and a post-punk artistic aesthetic. He won three Emmy awards for his work on Pee Wee's Playhouse, and is sort of regarded as an underground comic God. He's done album covers, fliers, comics for books and magazines and all sorts of other stuff. In 2006-2007, Panter was exhibited alongside Winsor McCay, Lyonel Feininger, George Herriman, Elzie Segar, Frank King, Chester Gould, Milton Caniff, Charles Schulz, Will Eisner, Jack Kirby, Harvey Kurtzman, Robert Crumb, Art Spiegelman and Chris Ware at the Masters of American Comics exhibition at the Jewish Museum in NYC.
The Whitney Museum of American Art currently has an exhibition called Lyonel Feininger: At The Edge of the World on view through October 16th. (note: Feininger is a Klaus favorite. This show is not to be missed). As part if the exhibition, the Whitney has organized an epic event on Wednesday July 20th at 7:00pm featuring a panel discussion that will include Gary Panter, Art Spiegelman, and Chris Ware (another Klaus favorite!). They will discuss the intersection of comics and fine art, do a Q&A, and get assaulted by your man Klaus for some autographs. The event will be moderated by John Carlin.
Panter recently donned his musician hat for a new release by Devin Gary & Ross called Four Corners Bounce.
Devin Gary & Ross is a mind melting three- man music making machine. Four Corners Bounce is their first record. The six tunes on it are full spectrum serving of psychedelia that includes washed out wanderings over well- worn terrain, bold ventures into a candy-col- ored abyss and a snappy title track that you will end up signing in the shower. The artwork was recently given the honor Best Cover of the Month by Vice. That's it above. MP3 at Altered Zones.
In other awesome Whitney-related-events-news, be sure to mark your calendars for Wednesday August 10th, 2011. Why? Because in conjunction with the Cory Arcangel: Pro Tools exhibition, the Whitney has scheduled an event called Title TK Meets Danny Goldberg. Who are Title TK? Title TK is a three piece band consisting of Cory Arcangel, Howie Chen and Alan Licht. They are a phenomenal band, though some regard them as slightly banter prone.
Who's Danny Goldberg?
Goldberg has had a long and distinguished career since the late 1960s, ranging from personal manager, record company president, public relations man, and music journalist. Among other things, he served as Chairman and CEO of Mercury Records Group and of Warner Bros. Records, was Vice President of Led Zeppelin's Swan Song Records, and managed The Allman Brothers, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, and the Beastie Boys. The guy is a freaking legend, and that blurb is only the tip of the iceberg of this man's achievements and contributions to music. You will laugh. You will get annoyed. You will laugh. And you will learn something.

Eddie of Art Brut serenades Webster Hall (more by Brook Bobbins)
Dearest InternetThe comic book isn't out yet, but the source material, Art Brut 's new LP Brilliant! Tragic! was released back on May 24th, and the band will hit the road in support later this month. As discussed, one of their upcoming dates is June 23rd at Music Hall of Williamsburg (tickets are still on sale). They've also added Maxwell's on June 21. Tickets are on sale now for that too. Reptar opens both shows.
In glorious celebration of the imminent release of Art Brut's 'Brilliant! Tragic!', a rag tag group of comic book magicians have come together for an exclusive project. Each one of the shining ten album tracks has been given to ten artists to interpret as they see fit. The result? Comic book masterwork. Plus, no comic would be complete without a letters' page. Fancy submitting a question to me, your editor in chief, Barnaby Fudge? It can be a letter about anything Art Brut related. I will answer your every whim and desire. Get it in either through Chez Argos or direct to source at email@example.com. You can find the complete list of artists here, including Bryan Lee O'Malley, Hope Larson, Jamie McKelvie and Jeffrey Lewis. Going to print soon, for all you geeks out there, this is a pretty exciting one.
Don't forget to get your letters into me. Forcible or otherwise.
The Black Francis-produced LP is available now and can currently be purchased on Amazon in CD format for 25 cents less than the MP3 download. Check out the song "Lost Weekend" from the album downloadable above and in video form, along with updated dates (and some European Jeff Lewis dates too), below...
Wavves's Nathan Williams is a modern day renaissance man. Besides being a guitarist/songwriter and a weed connoisseur, Williams is also a comic book author and has penned a twelve part series with friend Matt Barajas and illustrator Nicholas Gazin. Pitchfork says that,
According to an email from Gazin, "Negative Dad is like an extra retarded X-Men. There's heshers, evil parents, cat people, juvenile delinquents with partially functioning mutant powers, aliens, dreams."That's Negative Dad art above.
There will be at least 12 issues, and according to Gazin, it will possibly come with a cassette. He says, "This is going to be our gift (although it will cost money) to people who enjoy pot. Put the tape on, put in a beanbag chair in a space small enough to get clambaked and just read the comic and stare at the pictures and chuckle at the pictures while your friend plays Nintendo and eats all your Pirate Booty or something."
Maybe you can find copies of the comic at Wavves' merch table on tour. NYC'ers will have two chances to find out this summer. First, when Wavves plays the Northside Fest with Guided By Voices at McCarren Park Stage on 6/18 (tickets), and then at a free Summerstage show at Manhattan's East River Park Ampitheater on 8/25 at 7pm (enter at Delancey Street bridge over the FDR Drive and walk south or via Cherry St/Jackson Ave entrance into Corlears Hook Park and over the FDR Drive bridge leading directly to the ampitheater).

Jeffrey Lewis at Mercury Lounge, 2009 (more by Chris La Putt)
Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard are currently on the road, and about to pull the van into Vassar College in Poughkeepsie to play a show tonight (4/7). The Vassar date marks the second to last show on a short (over a week) tour that will terminate in NYC Friday (4/8) at Silent Barn with The Beets, El-G & Preston Spurlock.
The Silent Barn show must be a late one though because Jeff will also be performing earlier on Friday at a MoCCA 2011 Pre-Party with Peter Stampfel at SUTRA Lounge (16 1st Avenue). $5 cover (donation to The Museum of Comic & Cartoon Art) (they play that one at 7:30pm sharp).
Starting Saturday, 4/9, Jeff will spend two days at the Museum of Cartoon and Comic Art's Festival at Lexington Armory (68 Lexington Avenue between 25th & 26th St).
MoCCA Fest is an annual two-day event attracting thousands of comic art lovers and creators from around the globe to celebrate the world's most popular art form in the heart of New York City. It is an annual fundraiser for the Museum.Lewis will have his own table at the event, and will undoubtedly offer some of his comics for sale. Tickets are on sale. Flyer below.
Since 2002, MoCCA Fest has offered a unique venue to experience comics, mini-comics, web comics, graphic novels, animation, posters, prints, original artwork, and more. In addition to the hundreds of creators who exhibit, the Festival hosts dozens of established and emerging creators, scholars, and other experts who participate in two days of lecture/discussion panels on a variety of comics and cartoon topics.
Jeffrey Lewis's last LP was a collaborative effort between him and Peter Stampfel. The Come On Board LP, which dropped on Jan 1, is out now on digital/CD via Bandcamp and is streaming with stuff below..

Stan Lee & Ne-Yo
Ne-Yo teamed up with Marvel Comics founder Stan Lee to host a discussion at this year's ComicCon in New York City on Saturday. The R&B star and the the 87-year-old former president and chairman of Marvel Comics discussed their recent collaboration on Libra Scale, a comic book that Ne-Yo wrote to accompany his upcoming album of the same name. [RTT News]You can check out our first two sets of pictures from this past weekend's con, HERE and HERE (both sets heavy on constumed attendants). The third set, heavy on celebrity guests (with video footage of Stan Lee and Ne-Yo), continues below...

"Saturday's event was a sellout, which meant tens of thousands of people were jammed into the convention center. While elbowing my way through the food court I overheard a Javits employee remark attendance had reached close to a million people. It sure felt that way. Here's another set of pictures from the 2010 edition of New York Comic Con, many costumed attendees included (the first set of pics is HERE). They continue below...
The amount of people in attendance was overwhelming, to say the least. But it was nice knowing the comic book and anime mediums are as popular as they are. I just hope next year organizers figure out a better way to simultaneously house both conventions.
One of the most fun aspects of going to any convention is the sightseeing while looking for the most inventive, creative and daring costume(s). Not to be disappointed, there were plenty of attendees dressed as such. I spotted multiple Zatannas, Deadpools and civilian-attire Wolverines. There were also several fans decked out in full Na'vi garb, blue body paint and all, and more than one Chun-Li roaming the showrooms. There was even a guy walking around in just a bath towel and carrying a stick of Old Spice deodorant. Talk about guts."
[Lehigh Valley Live]
Harvey Pekar, the irascible writer who spun the mundane details of his own life and the quotidian existences of his fellow Cleveland residents into comic-book narratives, and who showed that the comic-book panel could include everyday feelings of anxiety and disappointment as easily as it does the adventures of costumed heroes, has died, The Plain Dealer of Cleveland reported. He was 70.RIP Harvey.
A spokesman for the Cuyahoga County Coroner's office told The Plain Dealer that Mr. Pekar was found dead by his wife, Joyce Brabner, at around 1 a.m. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. Mr. Pekar was given a diagnosis of lymphatic cancer in 1990, an experience he documented in the graphic novel "Our Cancer Year."

"Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON have confirmed that they are working with composer John Powell and director Jimmy Hayward on the score to "Jonah Hex", the comic-book Western/horror film starring Josh Brolin in the lead role, with support from John Malkovich, Megan Fox, Will Arnett, Michael Fassbender and Michael Shannon. The movie is based on the DC comic series about a horribly scarred antihero who is "a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood."More dates have been added to the Adult Swim tour featuring Mastodon, Converge, High on Fire, and Dethklok. One of those new dates is October 29th at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC, which is one day before the previously announced date at the same venue. Tickets for the new date are now on Ticketmaster presale (password = mastoklok). General sale starts Friday. All dates below...

DC comics and chocolate milkshakeFriday, June 5th, marked the end of Art Brut week here in NYC. The UK band played the tiny Mercury Lounge on Monday, Tuesday (6/2), Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Friday's lineup was my favorite. Openers were Keith TOTP and Jeffrey Lewis who reads from comic books that he draws about his songs as he plays. Speaking of comic books, Art Brut also paid a visit to DC Comics headquarters while they were in town. More pictures and the setlist from the Friday show, below...

New York's Jeffrey Lewis has been busy in the last year. (To see exactly how busy, check out Jeff's "A Year in Love and Music" entry on the NYT's Measure for Measure blog, to which he's been contributing.)
Jeff's four-date tour with Dufus finishes this Saturday, March 14th in Brooklyn at Pete's Candy Store with a CD release show for Dufus's new record, In Monstrous Attitude (samples at link). In May/April, Dufus will head out on a European tour (dates below). The Dufus album features comic art by Jeffrey Lewis, who is releasing his own new album (as full-band Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard) 'Em Are I on April 20th (UK/Europe) and May 19th (US), both on Rough Trade Records.
Jeffrey recently put his drawing talents to use (as he does in his comics and elsewhere) in a new video for the song "To Be Objectified" (which appears on the upcoming album). The video was created with Jack Ferry and $99 Music Videos - a site that challenges musicians to make a video for that sum with a set of bare-bones criteria. Watch it, and the making of it, below.
Jeff will tour Europe March-May with a solo/full-band tour that eventually reaches New York's Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday, May 20th (tix on sale now) - a venue featured prominently in Lewis's "Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror," video below.
Next Thursday (3/19), Jeff will give a lecture on Watchmen (the topic of his college thesis) at midtown comic spot Jim Hanley's Universe. "It should be stressed that it's for people who have read the book, not for people interested in it looking for some kind of introduction... he'll be revealing too many spoilers!." Jeff gave a similar lecture in Portland, OR, and London earlier this year.
All tour dates, Jeff's "A Quick Biography of Barack Obama," and the above-mentioned videos, below...
