Absu at Maryland Deathfest 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro)
Absu

For my money, one of the best black metal bands in the US will play NYC tonight at Saint Vitus, the first of a two-night stay for the "mythological occult metal" band Absu. Krallice will provide support tonight (4/10) and Tombs tomorrow (4/11). As discussed, the shows will feature two sets from the band that will span the entirety of their career. Tickets are still available for both nights OR you can take your chances at trying to win a pair for each! Details on the contest are below.

Contest details, a stream of the band's classic, Tara, and remaining dates are below.

Black Angels @ Webster Hall 4/8/2013
Black Angels

I love how they get weirder and darker with each other album. They have such a distinct sound, that there's isn't much reason to alter it. Like another band who I have an unhealthy obsession with, Stereolab, the Black Angels stick to what they do best -- recalling the west coast 60s psych rock scene mixed with some dirty, nasty, sexy, seductive guitar riffs. -[MusicSnobbery]
As discussed, The Black Angels played the first of two NYC dates on April 8th at Webster Hall, snagging support from LA's Allah-Las and Montreal's Elephant Stone, the latter of whom's frontman, Rishi Dir, has been guesting with Black Angels on this tour as well. Pictures of the headliner are in this post. Allah-Las last night's show at Mercury Lounge, hopping on a bill with Young Magic (as hypothesized).

The Black Angels shows are in celebration of the band's new LP Indigo Meadow, and you can win an autographed copy of the gatefold vinyl which comes pressed on 180 gram with a download card and 20 page booklet. Details on how to enter are below.

All three bands play a sold-out Bell House tonight (4/10), and then continue on their wide-reaching tour. Black Angels' Webster Hall setlist is below.

Argonauts at Union Pool, March 2012 (more by Di Lynn Ring)
Argonauts

Let's be honest, supporting Torche is not the most enviable of positions when you've got a sold-out show. It takes a band with balls to play right before them, and luckily the first of two openers for the sold-out show at Saint Vitus on March 2 has been revealed. Argonauts (mems of Revocation, East of The Wall, Burnt By The Sun, Municipal Waste) will play direct support to Torche, with more bands still to be revealed. As stated above, tickets are sold out, but as sponsors of the show, BrooklynVegan will be giving away a few pairs for free. Details on how to enter are below.

BV and Invisible Oranges are also proud sponsors of upcoming shows at Saint Vitus with Deafheaven / Sannhet, Acid King, and most imminently, two nights with YOB that kick off on Sunday (2/10). Tickets for all of those shows are still available.

UPDATE 6PM: Tonight's St. Vitus show (Dept. of Health, ANASAZI, Blackboot, A Truth) has been cancelled due to Nemo.

In related metal news, as we just updated in our list of Nemo-related cancellations, we thought we'd let you know that tonight's scheduled Gojira / Devin Townsend / Altas Moth show at Irving Plaza has been postponed till February 19. That's one day after their show at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Torche track stream and contest details are below.

Psychic Ills

Psychic Ills rang in the New Year at Saint Vitus, and the Brooklyn crew will take on Bowery Ballroom tonight as part of a record release celebration with White Hills and Prince Rupert's Drops. Tickets are still available or you can try your luck at winning a few pairs AND a copy of the new LP on vinyl! Details on how to enter are below alongside all upcoming dates; NYC will serve as the tour kick-off show.

If you can't make the show, pre-order your copy of the LP via the Sacred Bones store (it's out 2/19), who are also holding preorders for the new Lust for Youth and the new LP from The Men. Lust for Youth recently released the title track to stream from that 12". Check that out below along with a Psychic Ills video flyer and all updated dates/contest details.

Cover of the Grails side of the Pharoah Overlord split
Grails

Grails are preparing the release of Black Tar Prophecies Vol.5, one side of a split with the Finnish greats Pharaoh Overlord (members of Circle). That record will see the light of day via Grails' new label home of Kemado on October 30. Stream the lush and cinematic opus, "Chariots," below alongside their forthcoming schedule of dates down under.

The cover for Black Tar Prophecies Vol. 5 is a skewed reference to another album cover, one recorded during a "weird period" by a very important and hugely influential musician. Do you know the musician and art that it references? If so, head below for details on how to enter a contest to win a copy of the vinyl!

Reminder, Emil Amos from Grails will also be in the NYC area soon, touring with Om as part of their round of make-up dates (due to Emil's injury). Those dates include November 21st at Bowery Ballroom, tickets are still available.

That stream, the Pharoah Overlord art for their side of the split, a list of tour dates, and contest details are below.
