AC/DC (Rudd second from right)
We posted about AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd being charged with attempting to hire a hitman to kill someone. Those charges have now been dropped due to "insufficient evidence" but prosecutors will still go forward on the drugs and threatening-to-kill charges. From the New Zealand Herald:
A spokeswoman for Tauranga Crown Solicitor Greg Hollister-Jones confirmed this afternoon the charge had been withdrawn after Rudd's lawyer, Paul Mabey QC, issued a statement announcing the sensational U-turn by authorities. You can read Rudd's lawyer's full statement here. AC/DC told Rolling Stone they didn't know about the charges until they read them in the press, and it will not affect the release of their new album, Rock or Bust, which is out December 2.
Rudd, 60, appeared in court yesterday after police raided his home in Tauranga. He was accused of attempting to hire one person to kill two others, and of threatening to kill another. He was also charged with possession of methamphetamine and cannabis.
Mr Mabey said: "I was advised by the Crown Solicitor Hollister-Jones that he had reviewed the police file and the available evidence to support the charge of attempting to procure murder. He had formed the view that there was insufficient evidence to justify that charge. He has now withdrawn the charge."
This afternoon, the man who was named in court documents as the "intended hitman" told the Herald he believed the matter had blown out of proportion. He described himself as a "family man" - not a hitman - and said it was "good" the charges were dropped.
But he did not blame police, who he said were just doing their job.
The man questioned whether any suggestion of a murder plot by Mr Rudd, whom he considered a friend but had not spoken with since charges were laid yesterday, was simply "hot air".

[Andrew] Billington, who lives on the upper West Side, had taken his girlfriend to see Welsh rock band the Stereophonics on Saturday night at Terminal 5, located on W. 56th St.Andrew Billington, 37, is an internationally known British marathon runner, and we wish him a speedy and full recovery.
Following the concert, the couple was walking on W. 58th St. between 10th and 11th Aves. at 10:45 p.m. when a violent goon emerged from the shadows, a police source said.
The mugger, believed to be a homeless man, came up behind Billington and bashed him in the back of the head with what his girlfriend told police appeared to be a brick wrapped in a cloth, the source said. Billington fell to the ground and the assailant hit him again in the face with the brick before searching his pockets for money, the source said.
The robber, dressed in a hoodie or jacket and wearing a baseball cap, fled empty-handed, leaving Billington bloodied and his girlfriend, whose name was not released, screaming for help.
Cops are still trying to identify the attacker, hoping security cameras in the area filmed the robbery, a throwback to the bad days of New York City. [NY Daily News]
If you saw anything, say something. A security camera picture of the alleged mugger is below...
Boasting and hip hop go hand in hand, but in the case of Neno Best, it backfired in a major way. As you may have heard, NYPD picked up the rapper on Monday and called his arrest one of the biggest gun busts in NYC history after catching wind of his (now inactive) Instagram account that boasted of money, guns and much more. In all, the arrest netted more than 250 firearms, some of which were reported stolen. Best was part of a sting that netted the arrest of nineteen in total:
Those busted included two gun runners who oversaw the pair of loosely organized rings and sold their illicit goods through the same city dealer, officials said.
One of the men, Walter Walker, used a rap studio at 1991 Atlantic Ave. in the Ocean Hill section of Brooklyn as his home base in the city. The undercover police operation had been dubbed "Up on the Hill.''
...[NYPD Commissioner Ray] Kelly also said that last year "detectives learned through an unrelated undercover narcotics investigation that guns were being sold in the Ocean Hill community of Brooklyn."
Above the Country Kitchen restaurant on Atlantic and Saratoga avenues, within the 81st Precinct, they discovered a 26-year-old aspiring rapper, Mathew Best, who lived on Saratoga Avenue. He also used a unit in the same building as a recording studio. -[NY Post]

During the stop, officers noticed the singer reeked of booze ... and performed various field sobriety tests, which he bombed. -[TMZ]
Peter Murphy, of Bauhaus/solo artist fame, was arrested this weekend after allegedly hitting another car in his Subaru (brutal) and attempting to flee the scene. He was cornered by an eyewitness until the police arrived:
The eyewitness followed Murphy, 55, from the crash at Central and Goode avenues in Glendale to the 3400 block of Barham Boulevard in Los Angeles because "he was afraid [Murphy] would kill someone with his driving," according to Glendale police. No word as to whether or not the arrest will change anything with his upcoming all-Bauhaus tour scheduled for this spring.
Murphy, who was in a Subaru Forester, reportedly struck a Mercedes about 11:48 a.m. at the intersection, then drove around it and entered the 134 Freeway, police said. As he fled the scene, a witness who was washing windows snapped a photograph of Murphy's vehicle, which had sustained moderate front-end damage...
Glendale officers said Murphy appeared to be at points "very confused" and had difficulty recalling the day and time.
Murphy denied drinking alcohol that day, adding that he had only taken his regular prescription pills for depression, according to police... Inside the L.A. police patrol car where Murphy had been detained, officers reported finding a small plastic bag, possibly of methamphetamine, police said. Murphy denied that the bag belonged to him, but officers said they believed he was trying to discard it in the patrol car. -[LA Times]

According to Czech newspaper, Novinky, Randy Blythe has been indicted on charges on Manslughter. Lamb of God's manager Larry Mazer commented on Blythe's indictment:
"After a three month investigation, the prosecutor in the Czech Republic has decided to move forward with an indictment of Randy Blythe on the charge of manslaughter with intent to cause bodily harm. Obviously, we intend to fight vigorously against these charges as we feel that in no way did Randy intend to cause bodily harm on the young fan who subsequently died from injuries sustained at the show. As he has stated previously, Randy intends to go to Prague to defend himself at trial.Blythe has stated his intentions return to the Czech Republic to stand trial.
While it is a tragedy that a Lamb of God fan died following a performance by the group, in no way do I feel that Randy did anything improper that led to the young man's injuries and subsequent death. The price of a ticket to a show does not entitle audience members access to a band's stage. In the years since the murder on stage of Dimebag Darrell Abbott, performers of all genres have had to become more guarded while performing in response to the dangers presented by fans trying to become part of the performance. We believe that Randy responded professionally to the numerous amount of fans rushing the stage that day, a number of them captured on videos that have been posted on the internet. We have testimony from the venue operator that acknowledges lax security and an improper barricade being used that evening. Numerous testimonies from fans also were contradictory as to the actions of the multiple fans that tried to access the stage.
At this point, all that the band, myself, and our lawyers can do is to present a defense and try to convince the panel of judges who will hear the case that Randy is innocent of all charges and that his name and reputation need to be cleared and that he be permitted to carry on with his life and career always mindful that a fan passed away after a Lamb of God performance.

"Erykah Badu's naked stroll through downtown Dallas, Texas, for a music video has earned her a disorderly conduct citation. The singer shed her clothes as she walked through Dealey Plaza until she was nude and then fell near where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Badu said the video was "shot guerrilla style," without a crew and in one take March 17. A Dallas Police spokeswoman said earlier in the week that they wanted to press charges against Badu because children were present, but no one had called police or filed a complaint that day. Police now have their witness." [CNN]The witness probably works for her record label. Total punishment: $500 fine. Total free press from having to pay a $500 fine: priceless.
"CHICAGO--The self-proclaimed founding member of a street gang that purports to exert control through use of violence over hardcore punk rock music in clubs and concert venues in major cities nationwide was arrested yesterday by FBI agents in Los Angeles on a federal extortion charge filed in Chicago. The defendant, Elgin Nathan James, allegedly extorted $5,000 from an unnamed victim, a popular recording artist from the Chicago area, while the victim's band was on tour in late 2005 and early 2006, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced today." [FBI]The street gang they're referring to is the notorious straight-edge crew FSU which stands for Friends Stand United, or as most know it... Fuck Shit Up (or as the FBI document refers to it, "F(_ _ _) S(_ _ _) Up"). The charges continue...
On Nov. 27, 2005, the victim and several friends left a bar in Orlando, Fla., and were jumped by a group of men, some of whom were wearing clothing with logos that said "FSU" and "FSU Nation." The victim escaped with one friend. But another friend and that friend's brother were severely beaten by the gang, the charges allege. About an hour later, the victim received a telephone call from James, and according to the victim, James asked how the victim's trip to Florida was going when the victim had never told James that the victim would be traveling in Florida......As stated above, these charges are just coming now - over 3 years after the above incident happened. Since then Elgin James moved to LA, released a short film starring Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz and became a Sundance recognized-filmmaker! More about FSU and Elgin below...
.....On Feb. 25, 2006, under FBI surveillance, the victim met James outside the southern California club and handed James an envelope containing $5,000, which the FBI had provided to the victim, according to the charges

Someone sent me a link to VICE's "DEPARTMENT OF OOPSIES! - WE HIRED A GRIFTER" article the other day (above picture included). I assumed, being that it was VICE, that it was a joke. I wasn't really sure what the point was.
It's a crazy new hipster character fond of criminal and sexual hijinks! Let's meet Kari Ferrell, the 22 year-old tattooed Utah girl who scammed her way through hipster Brooklyn. Sex, lies, cancer, and bands, yea!The Observer article is full of familiar terms like, Vice, Union Pool, Williamsburg, GoldenVoice, Coachella, Rutgers, Happy Ending, beards, Brooklyn Label, Greenpoint, and AEG.
Kari's story first came out when she lied her way into a job at Vice. That lasted a week, until someone there Googled her and found out she was wanted back in Utah for fraud, theft, and $60K in bad checks, and was generally a con artist.
But today [4/15] former Gawkerer Doree Shafrir comes out with a monstrous piece in the Observer on Kari's whole freaking life story (Doree is most comfortable when dealing with the criminal element). Oh it is delightful, assuming you weren't personally unfortunate enough to come in contact with the brash young pathological liar/ vixen! The short version: Kari stole and scammed her way around Salt Lake City for a while, then decamped to Brooklyn, where she resumed stealing and scamming, using aggressive sex appeal and wild lies like "I have cancer" or "I'm pregnant" or "I work there" (sometimes all at once, to her boyfriends!) to get...money? Validation? She's obviously mad psycho. [Gawker]
It's strange that she came to Brooklyn and used her real name. Check her out in the Salt Lake City Police's Most Wanted video below...
