Deer Tick

Twangy rockers Deer Tick returned to NYC last night (3/6) for the ongoing American Songbook Series at Lincoln Center's Allen Room. Given the environment and their partially acoustic setup, they were less rowdy than usual, and their 20+ song set included material from all over their career. They also included a few covers, but leaned most heavily on songs from their 2007 debut, War Elephant, and their newest LP, 2013's Negativity. For "In Our Time" off the latter, Deer Tick singer John McCauley's (once very famous and still active) wife Vanessa Carlton came out to sing guest vocals, which she also does on the album version. PIctures of the show are in this post.

John and Ian of Deer Tick will be back in NYC for the Bob Dylan tribute at MHOW on 3/24 which also includes Elvis Perkins, Langhorne Slim, Dawn Landes, and more.

Bob Dylan

To celebrate the 1980-1990 period of Bob Dylan's career, ATO Records will release Bob Dylan in the 80s: Vol. 1 on March 25. The tribute compilation was put together by producers Jesse Lauter (Elvis Perkins, The Low Anthem) and Sean O'Brien (Dawes, PAPA), and features covers by Built to Spill, Deer Tick, The Hold Steady's Craig Finn, Gene Ween & Slash, Glen Hansard, Dawn Landes & Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Blitzen Trapper, Yellowbirds, Ivan & Alyosha, Reggie Watts, Elvis Perkins, Lucius and more. Listen to Built to Spill's take on "Jokerman" from the compilation, with the full tracklist, below.

The new compilation will be celebrated with a record release show in NYC the day before its release at Music Hall of Williamsburg (3/24). The show will feature Dylan's music performed by some of the artists on the album, including John & Ian of Deer Tick, Elvis Perkins, Langhorne Slim, Dawn Landes, Yellowbirds, Hannah Cohen and members of Tea Leaf Green. The lineup also includes Spirit Family Reunion (who are not on the album) and "special guests." Tickets for the show go on sale Friday (2/28) at noon.

Deer Tick at Cannon's Blackthorn - 6/13/13
Deer Tick

Twang rockers Deer Tick, who just announced that their new album Negativity will be out via Partisan Records on 9/24 (listen to a new song below), have been on a tour that recently hit Chicago, and last week (6/13) came to Rockville Center, NY for a show at Cannon's Blackthorn. It was a Tommy Brull Foundation-presented "Shine A Light" benefit like the one Deer Tick played in Wantagh in 2011. The show was opened by Matt Barthel and The Midnight Snacks, and Vanessa Carlton joined Deer Tick for a song during their set. Pictures from Rockville Center (but none of Matt Barthel) are in this post.

Deer Tick's upcoming dates include Newport Folk Festival afterparties (but not the actual festival) and the fall installment of Boston Calling. All dates are listed, along with more pictures from the show, the new song, and a teaser for the new album, below...

Katrina and the Waves

Back in 2010 we asked tUnE-YarDs, Fucked Up, Sam Amidon, Doveman, and Deer Tick to cover songs by Katrina & the Waves for a tribute CD in celebration of their hit song "Walking on Sunshine" (which Sam and FU both covered). We released those five tracks online, but the EP never got an official digital release until now! Find all five songs, along with a bonus one recorded by Dawn Landes, at iTunes, Amazon, Spotify AND RDIO.

Meanwhile, Sam Amidon just released an album on Nonesuch and is touring. Fucked Up play Governors Ball this weekend and House of Vans this summer. Doveman aka Thomas Bartlett just played with the National at Barclays Center and is producing a new record for Dawn Landes who is currently touring Europe but will be back to play Rockwood Music Hall on July 9. Tune-Yards recently played the Tibet House Benefit and played with Roomful of Teeth at Lincoln Center where Thomas Bartlett (Dovemen)'s band (one of the many) The Gloaming is playing outside in July. Deer Tick recently played two nights in Chicago and is on the lineup of a new Boston fest happening this fall.

rainy Saturday at Boston Calling Music Festival (via Kevin Begley)
Boston Calling

The first-ever Boston Calling Music Festival went down over the weekend (5/25-26) at Boston's City Hall Plaza. It was headlined by The National (whose Aaron Dessner also curated it, and who just did lots of album celebrating in NYC), and also included sets by The National's tourmates Dirty Projectors, The Shins (who also played a NYC show this past weekend), The Walkmen (who play a free show during Northside), Youth Lagoon (who open The National's Barclays Center show), and more.

Despite the rain and cold temperatures we were faced with over the weekend, the inaugural festival still seemed to be a success and festival organizers have already announced that Boston Calling will return this fall on September 7 and 8. The fall lineup is being headlined by Vampire Weekend on the Saturday, along with sets by Local Natives, The Gaslight Anthem, Bat For Lashes, Deer Tick, Okkervil River, and more; and headlined by Passion Pit on the Sunday, along with sets from Kendrick Lamar, Major Lazer, Solange, Flosstradamus, Flume, and more. Full lineup below (via Pitchfork).

Early bird 2-day passes go on sale Friday (5/31) at 10 AM and single day tickets go on sale June 7.

Both Local Natives and Kendrick Lamar also play NYC festival Governors Ball in June, which is only one of Kendrick's upcoming festival appearances in the NYC-area. Vampire Weekend and Solange play a NYC show together, and Solange also plays a free show during Northside. Major Lazer and Flosstradamus will hit NYC for their Mad Decent Block Party. And The Gaslight Anthem play two NYC shows this summer too.

Deer Tick & friends @ Brooklyn Bowl
Deer Tick

Deer Tick have been up to a lot this month, and after just posting pics from their set at the Capitol Theatre last night (12/27), where they were supporting My Morning Jacket, we've got a slightly belated set of pics of the third and final night of their Brooklyn Bowl residency, where they performed an album and an EP in its entirety each night. Night 3 (12/19) saw the band, who were joined by a horn section, playing Divine Providence and the Tim EP. Here are those pictures.

Pics of night 1 when they performed Born on Flag Day and More Fuel for the FIre EP are HERE and pics of night 2 when they performed The Black Dirt Sessions and Holy Shit it's Christmas EP are HERE.

Like the first two shows, Deer Tick's Ian O'Neill opened the show (no pics of his set), and for this one he was followed by Real Estate side project Alex Bleeker and the Freaks whose bluesier (than Real Estate) sound had them fitting in with Deer Tick a lot better than Real Estate or Ducktails would have. Then Yaps (whose Top 10 Albums of 2012 list is below) introduced author/comedian Dave Hill (who just gave us his Best of 2012 list) who introduced Deer Tick (shirtless, obviously) before they went on to play a booze-soaked set of Divine Providence, Tim and covers of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues," Paul Westerberg's "Mr. Cigarette," Elliot Smith's "Between the Bar," Jim Croce's "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" and Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your RIght (To Party!)," plus a few other original tunes worked in. Members of Delta Spirit also joined for the encore.

As mentioned, Deer Tick play a sold out show at Maxwell's tonight (12/28) and NYE in Boston with Two Gallants.

More pics and Deer Tick's setlist from the third show at Brooklyn Bowl, and Yaps' Top 10 list, below...

Deer Tick @ The Cap
Deer Tick

Deer Tick, who recently finished up a residency at Brooklyn Bowl (night three pics HERE), opened for My Morning Jacket on night 1 of their three-night run at Port Chester's Capitol Theatre last night (12/27). Pictures from their set are in this post and pics of MMJ are HERE.

Deer Tick are continuing to tour and will play Maxwell's in Hoboken TONIGHT (12/28) with Two Gallants, one of a few shows the two bands are playing together in December (and they'll tour Australia together in February). Tonight's show is now sold. If you didn't manage to get tickets, you can still get tickets to Deer Tick's friends Lucero's shows at Brooklyn Bowl tonight and Saturday (tickets for for night 1, night 2, or both nights).

Both Deer Tick/Two Gallants and My Morning Jacket will be heading to Cambridge/Boston for New Year's Eve (separately). Deer Tick/Two Gallants play The Sinclair while MMJ will take over the Agganis Arena with Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

John McCauley & special guest Vanessa Carlton
Deer Tick

Deer Tick will complete their 2012 Brooklyn Bowl residency in NYC tonight (12/19).

At last week's show (12/12), the band was joined by support from Viking Moses and a solo set from Deer Tick guitarist Ian O'Neil (who earlier that day told us his 'best of 2012'). At that show the band focused their energies on The Black Dirt Sessions and the sillier Holy Shit it's Christmas EP. And there was even more to end the show:

After running through both those recordings as the main part of their set, Deer Tick returned for two encore segments; the second segment closed with segue from "Sink or Swim" into "Sleep Walk" and "La Bamba." Members of Deer Tick play in the side-project Diamond Rugs with Steve Berlin, whose group Los Lobos scored their mainstream breakout hit by covering the song. Their encores also included "Friday XIII," "Unwed Fathers," "Dirty Dishes," "Cheap Sunglasses," "Baltimore Blues No. 1," "Nevada," In addition, pop singer/songwriter Vanessa Carlton and regular Deer Tick collaborator Liz Isenberg both sang with the band on a few songs. Carlton joined Deer Tick for "Choir of Angles," "Piece By Piece," "Sad Sun" and "Unwed Fathers" while Isenberg appeared on "When She Comes Home," "Choir of Angles," "Piece By Piece," "Sad Sun" and "Friday XIII." During last week's Bowl show, the members of Deer Tick pulled a fan out of the audience to sing Isenberg's parts on "Friday XIII." -[Jambands]
The first week of the residency had the band playing Born on Flag Day and More Fuel for the Fire EP (pics), and the residency comes to a close tonight when the band performs Divine Providence and Tim EP in full. Limited tickets will be available at the door.

More pictures from Week 2, below...

Deer Tick @ Brooklyn Bowl, 12/5/2012
Deer Tick

Deer Tick kicked off their Brooklyn Bowl residency on Wednesday night (12/5), the first of three shows for the band. Wednesday's shows focused on the band's Born On Flag Day and Fuel For the Firereleases, which saw the band perform each from front-to-back:

During the Born On Flag Day song "Friday XIII" the band pulled a fan out of the audience to sing Liz Isenberg's studio parts. The night closed with an extended encore featuring "Standing at the Threshold," "Art Isn't Real (City of Sin)," "These Old Shoes," "Spend the Night," "What Kind of Fool Am I?" and "Ashamed." -[Jambands]
The shows continue on 12/12 with a performance of The Black Dirt Sessions and Holy Shit it's Christmas EP (tickets), followed by the 12/19 show featuring Divine Providence and Tim EP (tickets).

More pictures from Brooklyn Bowl are below. Also, if you missed it, make sure and check out Deer Tick guitarist Ian O'Neil's favorite albums of 2012 HERE.

Deer Tick

Deer Tick's three-week Brooklyn Bowl residency begins TONIGHT (12/5). As mentioned, they'll be performng different albums and EPs in full at the three shows. Unfortunately no War Elephant (which they recently performed at a Newport Folk Fest afterparty), but we will get:

12.05.12 Born on Flag Day + More Fuel for the Fire EP
12.12.12 The Black Dirt Sessions + Holy Shit it's Christmas EP
12.19.12 Divine Providence + Tim EP
Doors for each show are at 8pm, and Deer Tick guitarist Ian O'Neil opens each show with a solo set. Other openers include Hollis Brown on 12/5, Viking Moses in 12/12, and Alex Bleeker on 12/19. Deer Tick's other upcoming shows include the Capitol Theater with My Morning Jacket and Maxwell's. They're all listed below.

Ian O'Neil, like many of our favorite artists before him, told us what his favorite albums of 2012 were. His list includes his recent tour-mates Turbo Fruits, his old band Titus Andronicus (who headlined Webster Hall this week), and legends Neil Young & Crazy Horse (who played Barclays Center this week). Check it out in full below...
