Sub Pop Silver Jubilee

While Sub Pop officially began in 1986, their offices opened in 1988 which they're using as an excuse to celebrate royally:

Sub Pop Records is visibly full of itself in sharing the initial lineup for our 25th anniversary celebration, the Sub Pop Silver Jubilee, to be held July 13th in Seattle, Washington. The event will feature music and comedy performances from artists from the label's roster and beyond, both past and present.
And pat their own back they will, the Sub Pop Silver Jubilee snagging appearances from Mudhoney (who play NYC soon), Greg Dulli, J Mascis, Father John Misty (him too), Shabazz Palaces with THEESatisfaction (ditto), Pissed Jeans (and them), The Baptist Generals (yep), ShearwaterBrothers of the Sonic Cloth (feat. Tad Doyle) and Endino's Earthworm (with Jack Endino). The show is FREE and open to the public (all ages), and scheduled to go down on July 13 at Airport Way in Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood. Additional bands (like maybe The Postal Service???) and events will be announced.

If you're going, a suggested $5 donation at collection stations at the Jubilee will get you a limited-edition tote bag, set to benefit "local charities like 90.3FM KEXP, Northwest Harvest and the Northwest Parkinson's Foundation."

Sub Pop are also celebrating 25 years by releasing Sub Pop 1000 for Record Store Day 2013. Inspired by the label's landmark 1986 compilation Sub Pop 100, it features contributions by Peaking Lights, Ed Schrader's Music Beat, Starred and more, all exclusive to this compilation. It's on silver vinyl with an 11"x11" booklet and a MP3 download coupon. Limited to 5,000 copies worldwide.

Speaking of Baptist Generals, in addition to their shows with Mountain Goats, they're playing a headlining show at Mercury Lounge on June 6. Tickets for that show go on AmEx presale today (4/10) at noon with the regular on-sale happening on Friday at noon.

Tracklist for Sup Pop 1000, plus details of the Silver Jubilee event, are below.

Los Crudos in Chicago earlier this year (more by Carmelo Espanola)

The great Los Crudos have returned to the stage off and on since initially splitting in 1998, most recently in Chicago for a pair of shows (pics/review). Now comes word that "That Spic Band" will return from slumber yet again to play Chaos in Tejas, their first appearance at the festival since 2008. The band is scheduled to play one more US date, the This is Not A Step festival in the Bay Area on June 28 - 30 happening at and benefiting DIY space 924 Gilman, featuring The Body, Iron Lung, No Statik, Talk is Poison and more.

Los Crudos recently played a string of dates in South America in addition to that doubleheader in Chicago in March 2nd. Check out video of full sets from both shows, along with a video of their 2008 appearance at Chaos in Tejas, below.

Jay-Z

Jay-Z's bid for a festival, known as Made in America, will return to Philadelphia in 2013, setting aside August 31- September 1 at Benjamin Franklin Parkway for the second edition. Check out a teaser trailer below, and line-up is forthcoming.

In other Jigga news, the man who REALLY started from the bottom (sorry, Drake- lol) has moved his Roc Nation venture away from Columbia Records and back to Universal:

News comes today from Jay & Roc Nation themselves that they've decided on Universal Music Group as their parent label, departing from multi-year deals that had Roc Nation records, including the most successful release from the company thus far, J. Cole's 2011 debut Cole World: The Sideline Story, releasing on Columbia Records.... Roc Nation's next release, which appears to be J. Cole's oft-delayed, but highly-anticipated sophomore effort Born Sinner, will be released on Roc Nation/Universal Music Group. -[The Source]
Roc Nation currently houses J. Cole, Jay Electronica and others, while managing such names as Rihanna, Meek Mill, Wale, Timbaland, and No I.D.

As mentioned, Jay-Z will join Justin Timberlake for a pair of shows at Yankee Stadium on July 19 & 20. Tickets for both are still available, but probably not for long.

Lindsay Lohan in practical desert wear at Coachella 2012
Lindsay Lohan at Coachella

During the last minute plea talks between Lindsay Lohan's attorney, Mark Heller, and prosecutors handling her lying to cops case, the wayward actress told him to keep her out of rehab until AFTER the Coachella music festival so she could attend...

"Lindsay was adamant that she not be forced to go to rehab until after the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the Palm Springs area on successive weekends in April. Lindsay LOVES going to the musical festival, and she's determined to go this year. She didn't want a little thing like rehab to get in her way of attending. Linds refused to sign off on any deal that would have prevented her from going to Coachella, period. Yes, it's that important to her, for some strange reason," -[RadarOnline]

The online site is hinting that it may be related to a budding romance that LiLo has with an "NYC musician and club promoter," but that is just supposition. Or maybe she's just trying to fit in one last desert party before the rehab gets its hooks in her. #priorities

ATP NY

I guess it comes as a surprise to no one that ATP's NYC event I'll Be Your Mirror will not return in 2013 considering last year's turnout and the problems related to the company and the venue. That said, its sad nonetheless... I personally saw some amazing sets from the likes of Godspeed, The Make-Up & Hot Snakes during my one night at the fest. Hopefully this will mean a leaner and meaner event for 2014, but I guess that remains to be seen.

Pictures from the 2012 event are here, here and here.

Left for Dead

In the wake of the sell-out of A389 2013 in Baltimore, the label has expanded the two-day fest into a full extended weekend! A389 Anniversary will kickoff with a pre-fest show at Ottobar on 1/17/13 featuring Integrity, Withdrawal, Vilipend and Dead Gods , then come to a close with a Sunday matinee on 1/20/13 at Charm City Art Space with Left for Dead, Iron Reagan, God's America and Eddie Brock.

In addition to the previously discussed Friday/Saturday shows at Ottobar, Saturday (1/19) will now feature a matinee at Sidebar with Despise You, Gehenna, Dead in The Dirt, Ancient Shores and WarXGames AND an afterparty with Nothing (who recently toured). None of the newly announced shows will have advanced ticketing; you can only buy them at the door. Full show details are below.

Catharsis has only one show during A389 festival, so what does that mean? Could a tour be in the works?

In other A389 news, the label will release Devoid of Everything, which collects Left for Dead's entire 1996-97 studio output remixed from the original 1/4" multi-track reels. Check out the art above and you can stream a track below. Left for Dead members went on to play in bands like Cursed, Haymaker, Pick Your Side, Burning Love, and many many more. This rare one-time reunion (I was assured!) is not to be missed. Check out some thoughts on the reunion via Chris Colohan here.

Meanwhile, Full of Hell, who plays the Friday show of the fest, is on tour with Gaza now and will play Acheron on 11/24 with Code Orange Kids (tickets).

If you're wondering who Iron Reagan is, the band is prepping to release their 20-track debut Worse Than Dead via A389 in 2013. The band features half of Municipal Waste and members of Darkest Hour and you can stream their demo below alongside details of the A389 festivities.

Gaza at Saint Vitus, June 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)

A few unmissable ones include Gaza, Code Orange Kids, Full of Hell, and Old Wounds at Acheron on 11/24 (tickets) and the Festival of the Unknown at Public Assembly. Though the lineup of the latter has yet to be revealed, I have on good authority that it will be well worth attending. Tickets are on sale.

Converge, who recently played Highline Ballroom (review), will headline the Decibel 100th issue Anniversary show in Philadelphia at Union Transfer on 1/19 (tickets). The band will be joined by Pig Destroyer, Repulsion, Municipal Waste, Tombs and Evoken. Check out the show flyer below.

Full lineup is below.

Speaking of, as discussed, Japanese noise-punks Zyanose play Acheron on 11/10. Spectres and Crimson Scarlet, who also bless the Varning lineup, both play Acheron on Friday (10/26).

And in related news, NYC's Sad Boys have joined on to a bill with Perdition, Austin's Criaturas, Bortgang, Spine, and La Misma at 177 Stockholm tomorrow (10/25). Should be a fun night of raging punk.

Morbid Angel at MDF 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
MDF

After all of the drama with Baltimore venue Sonar, looks as if Maryland Deathfest will return to the space after all... sort of. The scoop:

In a nutshell, we will be returning to the property formerly known as Sonar, and will be at least doubling the amount of outside space that we've been used to utilizing...The additional space outside will allow us to comfortably accommodate the crowd, and will allow more room for the MDF vendor village, food vendors/food trucks, places to sit, and other new additions like misting tents to escape the possibility of it being hotter than it should be that weekend. There will be two outside stages plus the stage inside. Due to the new configuration outside, the placement of the outside stages will likely be different.

As for the building itself, there are some renovations currently taking place, but the rooms will be used exactly how they have been in the past, and it will be air conditioned throughout.

We would also like to announce the addition of a second inside stage at Baltimore Soundstage, which is a 1/2 mile walk away from the former Sonar (at 124 Market Place), and will be used from Friday-Sunday. This will be a smaller show without a barricade that will feature mostly hardcore and punk bands, and it will be scheduled in a way that should not conflict with anything going on at the former Sonar compound.

Look for more band announcements to emerge in the coming weeks, including details on that hardcore/punk stage.
