David Byrne does in fact respect music
The NY Times published an article on Sunday that makes the case that art is NOT in fact dead in NYC, and that many of those complaining are really just old, nostalgic for their youth, and out of touch. It's an interesting read that includes mentions of Death By Audio, Nonsense NYC, Monster Island, the band Bubbles, Goodbye Blue Monday, and Silent Barn.
Silent Barn is somewhat hilariously pitted against David Byrne in the article (which was written by Alan Feuer). Byrne has been known to discuss the expensive real estate related problems artists face if they want to live in NYC, but apparently Silent Barn's Nathan Cearley isn't buying it...
"To survive for the long term, we have to grow up and have adult conversations about stuff like loans and workers' compensation," said Nathan Cearley, a Silent Barn veteran, who also works as a schoolteacher, plays in a "void drone" band called Long Distance Poison and serves on the collective's working group for logistical issues, which is known as Risky Bizness.Perry Farrell, Steve Earle, The Roots, Rufus Wainwright, and more will honor David Byrne at Carnegie Hall in March.
"I don't see David Byrne investing in real estate and trying to lower prices so that artists can stay here," Mr. Cearley said. (Mr. Byrne responded in an email that he failed to see how a real-estate investment, "even if I had the spare cash," would lower rents for artists.)
Mr. Cearley then went on: "If David Byrne isn't interested in art anymore" -- in his email Mr. Byrne said that he was -- "I suppose that's good to know. But we are. So instead complaining about the end of art in New York, I'd love to see him save it. Because he can write us a check anytime he wants." [NY Times]
Hey, remember when Mark Kozelek was in 'Almost Famous'?
Here's the latest volley in the never-ending feud between Mark Kozelek and The War on Drugs. If you've been following along, you know that TWOD frontman Adam Granduciel (real last name: Granofsky) addressed Kozelek's song "The War on Drugs: Suck My Cock" in a Swedish interview, saying, among other things, "He's such a fucking child. And then the song is just idiotic, he's just a fucking idiot. I don't have time for idiots."
Of course, Kozelek responded. How? By reading the whole interview transcript aloud over light acoustic guitar backing and posting it on his site. Mark can't seem to get through a sentence without cracking up. He calls it "Adam Granofsky Blues." Listen to it here.
This morning a press release went out that Scott Weiland has been "terminated" from Stone Temple Pilots. To that Scott says:
SCOTT WEILAND STATEMENT ON STONE TEMPLE PILOTS:Ironically, Scott's "solo" tour, which hits NYC, NJ and PA in March has him "Celebrating STP Core and Purple in their entirety".
I learned of my supposed "termination" from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press. Not sure how I can be "terminated" from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that's something for the lawyers to figure out. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to seeing all of my fans on my solo tour which starts this Friday.

It was the bitter Britpop feud of the nineties - Oasis and Blur at each other's throats in the charts and out on the tiles.Good to see they've made up. Maybe Liam still holds a grudge? You can relive the legendary Britpop beef via video clips below.
Both rugged bands would threaten each other and the rivalry dominated both bands chart success, with record companies pandering to the division of teenage fans.
But despite Albarn, 44, saying in 2007 making up with Noel, 45, would be the end of Britpop the pair were happy to give each other a mellow squeeze at the BRIT Awards last night (2/20).
It seems Albarn had forgotten Noel Gallagher's famous wish he 'would 'get AIDS and die' and his own 2007 pledge: 'I can't make it up with Noel. Britpop would be over and heaven forbid that we'd ever admit we'd all grown up!' -[Daily Mail]
As for the BRIT Awards themselves, Mumford & Sons were named best British group; Coldplay was named best British live act; and Adele went home with Best British Single for "Skyfall." Full list of BRIT winners is here.
Blur will play their first North American shows in ages at Coachella 2013.

Yes, I'm laughing as I type this, but this is real, and too funny not to post...
As you may have heard, the Black Keys won like four Grammys the other night and Justin Bieber wasn't even nominated. After the ceremony, a TMZ reporter annoyingly cornered Black Key Patrick Carney and asked him questions about Justin Bieber of all topics. Put on the spot, Patrick didn't do the best job of answering the questions, and kind of dissed the Biebs, and in kind of a hypocritical way, even if he didn't mean it to come out that way... as you can hear and see below..
Is there anything more confusing than two up and coming, feuding female hip hop stars, both with the name "Azalea" (like the flower), but one is a last name and one is a first name spelled "Azealia"?
The latter just played her first two shows ever at Coachella and is now on her way back to NYC (the 212) to work with Missy Elliot (and she is very proud of that). Earlier today she was tweeting at T.I. (see above) for calling her feud with his Australian Grand Hustle signee Iggy Azalea "bitch shit," or some sexist shit like that.
Mayhem at Irving Plaza (more by Paul Birman)
After cancelling their last batch of dates, Mayhem will head back out to North America for a fall tour with support from Keep Of Kalessin, Hate, and Abigail Williams. Woe will also join on thirteen dates, though no word on which ones. The tour hits NYC at Gramercy Theater on November 3rd. Tickets info is forthcoming. Full tour schedule is below.

You authoritatively claim the blast beat as belonging to black metal, though far from unique to it, because it allows you to rationalize your I-can't-maintain-a-hyper-blast beat by plainly stating, "the technique of Hyperborean Black Metal is the blast beat."
You audaciously inform us that your work is the next stage of the art's evolution with "[Transcendental Black Metal] is a sublimination of Hyperborean Black Metal in both its spiritual aspect and its technical aspect."
Those passages, the essay on the whole, and every attempt to defend your position shows that you lack even the smallest sliver of modesty or respect for your peers or listeners. These qualities -- rather, the lack of these qualities -- are not unusual for black metal artists to possess; after all, concepts of superiority and elitism are hallmarks of traditional black metal. In your case, though, they do not apply because you have gone so far out of your way to show that you are not the typical black metal musician, you are not part of this world -- you are an outsider wearing some (just some) of black metal's skin. I appreciate you taking the effort to describe what you are attempting to do; however, when you make lengthy, authoritative statements decrying black metal as dead and outdated, when you deride everything that came before you as little more than a failed attempt at something that is unreachable, you're thumbing your nose at everyone who does not see things your way. It's obnoxious. It's rude. It's annoying.

Indie cred is serious business. And by "serious" we mean, of course, it's "subject to ridicule" the way only Chunklet can serve it -- over ice...with a tongue planted in cheek. Or is it?"
And speaking of indie cred and needing money, it definitely annoyed a lot of people when Paste Magazine started a big campaign a while back to collect money to keep their magazine afloat. Regardless of your opinion of Paste, it worked. They apparently collected a buttload of money, though it apparently wasn't enough because today it was leaked that they're going under anyway.
Someone who is probably celebrating Paste's downfall right now is fellow Southerner Henry Owings who has gone on record with his hatred for Paste, and especially their little campaign to save themselves (which I guess is slightly ironic in the context of this post, though that wasn't my original intent). The most combustive song on M.I.A.'s third album isn't loud or chaotic. Built on a mildly ominous, off-kilter beat -- plus an incessant shoosh like a bag of coins being shaken -- it bloops along with the grace of a janky PopCap game. But the sneakily titled "Lovealot" is perhaps the riskiest gambit yet from the 32-year-old artist born Maya Arulpragasam.That's the album art for "/\/\/\Y/\" (aka Maya), M.I.A's third album, due July 13th. Singles "XXXO" and "Born Free" from the album are already out and available on iTunes.
"Lovealot" alludes in part to the iconic, viral photo of a pistol-wielding Russian/Islamic couple -- the husband, a terrorist leader killed last year by police, and the wife, a teenager who tried to avenge his death by suicide-bombing the Moscow subway (at one point the song was titled "A/bdurakh/man/ova," after the girl's surname). Merely 20 seconds in, M.I.A. spits, suddenly, "Like a Taliban trucker eatin' boiled-up yucca / Get my eyes done like I'm in the burka," and then, "Like a hand-me-down sucker throwin' bombs out at Mecca," and on and on. What's more, when she purrs the line, "I really love a lot," she stretches the last two words so they sound like "I really love Allah." [Spin's review of 'Maya']
For the past week or so, as you probably heard, M.I.A., like Courtney Love before her, has been "feuding" with NYTimes' writer Lynn Hirschberg (a "ginger") over a not-so-favorable but not-SO-bad-either profile (cover story) on the singer in the NYT Sunday Magazine (a key part of which aims, successfully or not, at M.I.A.'s "terrorist" cred/claims). It all started when M.I.A. tweeted Lynn's phone number after the article was posted on NYTimes.com. The most recent development is a song (above) posted on the NEET Records blog, accompanied by unedited parts of the interview (part of which concerns truffle fries) (how M.I.A. got audio of her own interview is unclear).

Psychedlic Horseshit's Matt Whitehurst: I have no idea. I don't know. It became in vogue sometime in the last year due to a few figureheads talking a bunch of [expletive] on Terminal Boredom. And now it's exploded into this thing there where Wavves is getting $30,000 to [expletive] crank out this [expletive] generic [expletive].
There's a lot of one-person things now.
Right it's one person with GarageBand and a few chords and like -- Wavves to me sounds like [expletive] TV on the Radio. That band sucks [expletive]. It's one of the worst bands to get popular in a long time. They [expletive] trump No Age because I think it's worse than No Age. No Age is just like, [expletive]. It's really [expletive].
But you're playing at least one show with Wavves down here.
Three of them, yeah.
So how do you reconcile that?
We made "Wavves Suxx" t-shirts with it spelled S-U-X-X. We got tons of people taking pictures with us in those. People are all into it. And actually Wavves came up to our drummer and our drummer had no idea it was Wavves. And Wavves took like six pictures with Rich with the "Wavves Suxx" t-shirt on. So, you know, that little [expletive]'s probably into it or something. And is probably like, Oh, it's like hip-hop, man!
Friday April 24th @ MARKET HOTELWAVVES is playing a free show in Brooklyn on Saturday. Students can go get their tickets today (4/24). Crystal Stilts also play the Topshop/WAVVES show, and they're at Maxwell's on Sunday.
