Christmas

"Joyful, Joyful" (downloadable above) is "Dueling banjos" meets "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" (Ludwig van Beethoven, from Choral " Ode To Joy " Symphony No. 9 Opus 125), and it's one of seven tracks that appear on Scott Miller's new "Christmas Gift" EP. John Prine and Neil Young covers are on there too. Full tracklist and a stream of another song, below...

Dan Hicks

Dan Hicks digs Christmas tunes. But it took him over 30 years in the music business to get around to doing his own album of holiday music. The singer/songwriter/guitarist and leader of the Hot Licks, a swinging band with a cult following in the rock world going back to the '70s, has just released Crazy for Christmas on Surfdog Records and is on his way around the country on a tour he calls "Holidaze in Hicksville". The group will perform at a mix of theaters, clubs and coffeehouses, including the Barns at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Va., the City Winery in New York City and McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, Calif.

Talking via phone from his home in Marin County, California, Hicks says that he's always done Christmas tunes during that time of year with his band, the Hot Licks. "I've been doing Christmas songs with the Hot Licks for a couple of decades. We did about eight or ten tunes, but we didn't do them all at once. We've been doing shows we call Holidaze in Hicksville. We have a canvas backdrop with a cartoon scene of Christmas."
[Jazz Times]

Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks kick off their "Holidaze in Hicksville" tour in NJ tonight (11/27). From there they continue on to Piermont, NY before hitting City Winery in NYC with special guest John Hammond on Tuesday (11/30). All dates and a preview of the Christmas album, below...

The Mynabirds @ Fontana's during CMJ
Mynabirds

"All I Want is Truth (For Christmas)" is a reminder this Black Friday that it's not all about the gifts. Download The Mynabirds' reworked take on "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" above. Buy it on white vinyl with a b-side cover of The Zombies' "This Will Be Our Year", in the Saddle Creek store.

Speaking of Saddle Creek, The Mynabirds played the label's CMJ showcase at the Delancey back on October 21st, but they also played the Pirate Pirate day party at Fontana's while they/she were/was in town. You saw pictures of Devotchka from that show. Shots of the Mynabirds along with Field Days (not to be confused with Field Day) and Generationals who also played, continue, along with Mynabirds' latest non-Holiday video, below...

Paul Simon

Getting ready for Christmas Day. And let me tell you, namely, the undertaker, he's getting ready for your body. Not only that, the jailer he's getting ready for you. Christmas day. Hmm? And not only the jailer, but the lawyer, the police force. Now getting ready for Christmas day, and I want you to bear it in mind - Reverend Gates
Paul Simon is getting ready to release a new album entitled So Beautiful Or So What. It'll be out Spring 2011 via Hear Music / Concord Music Group. Its songs have titles like "The Afterlife," "Love is Eternal Sacred Light," "Questions for the Angels," "Love and Blessings," and "Getting Ready For Christmas Day." I sense a theme there, but for now I can only speak for one track, the track debuting in this post with Christmas in its name.

Download the MP3 for free above. Buy it at iTunes.

I'm a sucker for holiday music, but "Getting Ready For Christmas Day" is not technically a Christmas song. Named after and sampling the last recorded sermon by pre-war American Christian preacher and gospel singer Reverend J.M. Gates, its lyrics and title reference the holiday, but not in the happy way traditional holiday music does. The song covers topics like a relative spending the holiday in Iraq, and not having very much money (probably not an actual issue for Simon, but that's besides the point).

That's part of the sampled part of the lyrics quoted above (right below the old Rev. Gates ad which references another one of Gates' Christmas sermons, "Will the Coffin Be Your Santa Claus"). You can read all the Paul Simon lyrics, complete Reverend J.M. Gates samples included, below. The single's cover art is down there too...

The Music Tapes @ The Bell House in 2009 (more by Tim Griffin)
Music Tapes

This November and December, The Music Tapes will be bringing a comforting, enchanting, and very special evening of Music Tapes' dreamlike songs, stories and games for sleepover parties to ordinary homes across the land (US and Canada). The Music Tapes are now accepting invitations, and plan to visit over 200 homes! As with the Music Tapes' caroling and lullaby travels of years past, they will stop at several houses a night in each city visiting also far off out of the way places most tours never get to go.

The Lullaby evenings with include songs from the Music Tapes forthcoming 2011 record, as well as from Music Tapes for Clouds and Tornadoes, The 1st Imaginary Symphony for Nomad, and The Singing Saw at Christmastime, along with new Music Tapes games and stories. The entertainment, though sometimes more exciting than lulling, are all in honor of the comforting moments directly preceding and following sleep when we find ourselves happily unsure of whether we are awake or are dreaming. [Merge]

The Music Tapes annual holiday tour is in its third year, and the small scale events that populate the route tend to be a really good time. This trip is by far the most expansive, with tour dates running from the South to the West Coast to New England and even Canada. It kicks off November 4th, and hits NYC December 19th and 20th. Koster and friends usually plan for a few stops each night, so between the two dates there's a decent chance one performance will be near you. Remember, the dates are tentative, so email the tour address before you show up for more info.

The announcement is also confirmation that the Music Tapes will have a new release in 2011 (possibly titled The 2nd Imaginary Symphony for Cloudmaking)

Complete dates and how to get in touch with the tour (and invite them to your house!) are below...

Andy Warhol Christmas

Before achieving fame and glory as a leading Pop artist, Andy Warhol was a successful commercial artist who contributed illustrations to women's magazines and designed windows and promotional materials for department stores. Among his clients was Tiffany & Co., for whom he created a series of designs for holiday greeting cards. The whimsical drawings and paintings he produced for Tiffany's Christmas cards are the subject of this charming gift book.

Elves of Heaven

The folks behind the Seaport Music Festival have started a record label, Seaport Music Records, and have just released their first single -- a holiday-themed song from The Elves of Heaven which is basically Dublin musician Martin Clancy.

Martin became known to us through UK label Fingerlickin' Records and a project we worked together on this past June at the Seaport with the Brooklyn Philharmonic.

Martin will be our very first "artist in residence" and over the course of the next few months, you'll be hearing tons of stuff from him.

The first song is a pretty catchy little number, better than your average indie xmas tune, very much in the JAMC/Phil Spector mold. You can download it at the top of this post. Seaport Music Record's second release will be an actual 7" single from Brooklyn band Loose Limbs, 2010 TBD, so keep an eye out.

Lee Scratch Perry

Tickets are still on sale for Lee "Scratch" Perry's Highline Ballroom show on Sunday, December 13th (with Popo and Pace Won & Mr. Green). Lee's Narnack label-mates and fellow legends The Slits play the venue one night after (with The Sundelles and Sisters). I have a pair of tickets for each to give away; details are below.

The Lee Perry show is the kick-off for a one week US tour, the full dates of which are below with a very special video tour announcement from The Upsetter. "Santa Claus," a somewhat seasonal but not really very festive track from his 2008 Andrew WK-produced record Repentence (an album that Ari Up of The Slits makes a guest appearance on), is above.

Camera Obscura

A small group huddled around Kenny McKeeve and Gavin Dunbar not long after Camera Obscura's sold-out show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on Sunday night (11/22). One globe-trotting fan from Toronto had recently seen and met the band in Barcelona and Glasgow on their recent tour across Europe prompting McKeeve to quip, "You've clocked a lot of miles, haven't you?"

Yet, the same could be said for Camera Obscura. It's hard to think of 2009 as a breakthrough year for a band that's been around in some form since 1996 with several critically-hailed records under its belt. But that's precisely what it was. They produced one of the finest records in 2009 - My Maudlin Career (4AD) - crossing the globe almost non-stop in support. They sold out four shows in New York City in venues of various sizes, made their US late-night television debut (video below), turned out three smartly done videos and still have more touring lined up at the start of next year.

The band showed no effects of their exhaustive schedule on Sunday. And there were several stretches where leadsinger Tracyanne Campbell could have not sung at all such was the crowd's voice on several of the songs, most notably, "French Navy". "Good singing," said Campbell after the song.

The crowd, which spanned from scenesters to indie pop kids and beyond, shook off pretensions and danced to all the upbeat numbers like "Honey In The Sun" and "Let's Get Out of This Country" while couples swayed and held onto each other during slower songs like "James" and "Pen and Notebook." It was timeless pop executed in winning fashion by a band performing at the top of their game.

ChristmasOn December 8th...

...they will be releasing a holiday single [via 4AD]! 'The Blizzard' will be available as a 7" & digital single with the album track 'Swans' as the b-side. 'The Blizzard' is a pretty dour song as far as "holiday" tunes are concerned. It was written by country artist Jim Reeves and is about a gentleman trying to get home to a gal named Mary Anne. He's riding a lame pony in a blizzard, and, well - it doesn't have a happy ending. He ends up just 100 yards short - ie: freezing to death before he gets there.
That's the cover art there to the right. Listen to "The Blizzard" in a YouTube below.

Papercuts is on tour with the band until December 3rd and opened this Brooklyn show. More pictures, the CO setlist, and all dates, below...

John Waters as the other creepy old Santa...
John Waters

A John Waters Christmas is hitting the road this December. Six dates are scheduled with a New York City stop at BB King's on December 22nd. The show takes the form of a monologue that "explores and explodes traditional archetypes as [Waters] shares his compulsive desire to give and receive perverted gifts, a religious fanaticism for Santa Claus, and an unhealthy love of true crime holiday horror stories." Tickets for the NY show are on sale. He visits New Brunswick, NJ's State Theatre four days before (12/18) and tickets for that are on sale too. All dates below.

A John Waters Christmas is actually the name of the director's own holiday compilation that features the likes of Fat Daddy, Alvin & The Chipmunks and Tiny Tim. Videos of few of those are below.

Christmas Gift For YouBB King's will host another holiday show with Darlene Love on December 13th. The singer is a 2010 nominee for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and she appeared at the museum's two-night MSG show with Bruce & the E Street band. A video of her annual Letterman performance of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is below. Tickets are on sale.

Darlene Love's Love for the Holidays will also be at Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, NJ on Sunday, December 20th. Tickets are on sale.

Elsewhere in Jersey, Darlene teams up with Ronnie Spector for "A Christmas Gift for You" at Red Bank, NJ's Count Basie Theater on Thursday, December 17th. (Both got their holiday start in part from their songs on 1963's A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector.) Tickets are on sale.

Then, Ronnie Spector's annual X-Mas Party runs for two nights at BB King's on Saturday, December 19th and Sunday, December 20th. Tickets are on sale.

Spector's new disc The Last of the Rock Stars (...) has guest appearances that include Keith Richards, Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Patti Smith, Patrick Keeler (The Raconteurs) and Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather). There's also a version of "It's Christmas Once Again" to add to your holiday rotation alongside ubiquitous Ronettes versions of "Sleigh Ride" and "Frosty the Snowman."

Speaking of Patti Smith, she has some annual holiday shows coming up of her own, but those are after Christmas and include New Years Eve.

Dates & songs from all three are posted below...

Aimee Mann

Based around songs from [Aimee Mann's] 2006 Christmas album, "One More Drifter in the Snow," the show also featured songs from Nellie McKay and Grant-Lee Phillips, comedy by [Fred Armisen] and Morgan Murphy, and a video spoof of "A Christmas Carol," featuring cameos by actors Michael Cera and John C. Reilly and Mann's husband, Michael Penn, in the role of Marley.

The music ranged from traditional and "corny" (Mann's word) songs like "Sleigh Ride" to more somber fare, such as Mann's own "Calling on Mary." Phillips and McKay joined Mann on the former, and were frequent contributors throughout the two-hour show.

Phillips first came out dressed in a snowman costume, and he later disguised himself as Willie Nelson to do a creditable impersonation of the country legend on a version of Mann's 'Til Tuesday hit, "Voices Carry."..

Twisted Sister

Lita Ford
Twisted Sister

Lita Ford, Mini Kiss, a statue of Ozzy Osbourne, and Mick Foley (wrestler Mankind) were among the guests who showed up to help Twisted Sister celebrate Christmas at two shows at Nokia Theatre in NYC over the weekend. After Mini Kiss made like reindeer and pulled Santa Dee Snider on stage in his sleigh, the band broke into a set full of Christmas songs and true-to-form versions of their classics like 'I Wanna Rock' and 'We're Not Gonna Take It'. And like she does on Twisted Sister's Christmas album, and in the new official video, Lita Ford sang a 'dedicated to the troops' version of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" with the band. A great live video of that, and tons of pictures, below...
