DOWNLOAD: The Immaculates - New York is Mine for the Holiday (MP3)
Holiday themed singles flow like so much piping hot wassail this time of year. Here's a good one: Brooklyn upstarts The Immaculates' original tune "New York is Mine for the Holiday" lays down a soulful groove without going too heavily on the usual aural signifiers (but even they can not resist a sleigh bell). You can download the MP3 at the top of this post or stream it below. The video, which you can watch below, takes the theme literally by re-editing a familiar NYC-set film from the '90s.
The Immaculates (which feature members of French Miami, Boogie Boarder and Sisters) play the Death By Audio Holiday Party this Saturday (12/10) which, confusingly, is happening at the new Secret Project Robot (389 Melrose) which features headliners A Place to Bury Strangers as well as Evi Antonio.
Look for a second Immaculates EP early next year. Meanwhile, click through for the "New York is Mine for the Holidays" video, plus the DBA Holiday Party Flyer and a couple more streaming Immaculates tracks.

christmas makes me so happy. but it makes me so sad sometimes too. i think that's why i find it so magical. making a christmas album might seem like an odd thing to do, but for us it seems like the most perfect thing. some of my favourite songs are christmas songs. we've always been drawn to them and we've always written them, with the thought that someday we would have enough christmas songs to fill a whole album. and at last we have, so here it is. the boy least likely to christmas special. the christmas album we've always dreamed of making.Christmas Special is the third album from the boy least likely to. DOWNLOAD: Deer Tick - Christmas All Summer Long (MP3)
What better than a Deer Tick Christmas tune? How about two Deer Tick Christmas tunes? Grab "Christmas All Summer Long" from Deer Tick's new two track holiday EP "Holy Shit, It's Christmas!...", which is out digitally now, and get the whole EP for free with any Deer Tick purchase at PartisanRecords.com. There is no physical release at the moment, but they say anything's possible in the future.

The Mynabirds @ Fontana's during CMJ
"All I Want is Truth (For Christmas)" is a reminder this Black Friday that it's not all about the gifts. Download The Mynabirds' reworked take on "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" above. Buy it on white vinyl with a b-side cover of The Zombies' "This Will Be Our Year", in the Saddle Creek store.
Speaking of Saddle Creek, The Mynabirds played the label's CMJ showcase at the Delancey back on October 21st, but they also played the Pirate Pirate day party at Fontana's while they/she were/was in town. You saw pictures of Devotchka from that show. Shots of the Mynabirds along with Field Days (not to be confused with Field Day) and Generationals who also played, continue, along with Mynabirds' latest non-Holiday video, below...

DOWNLOAD: Binky Griptite - Holiday Breakdown (MP3)
Christmas? Soul? Christmas Soul! Here you go, kids: Sharon Jones' debut holiday song! In this self-penned little jingle-jangler, Sharon takes us back to her childhood, where as a young girl in the projects of Brooklyn she wondered how Santa was ever going to bring her any toys when clearly, "There Ain't No Chimneys in the Projects." As she soon finds out, the true miracle of Christmas was no fat man shimmying down heating ducts, but rather the love with which her own mother had been secretly tucking those presents under that tree. Awww. With a little help from Sharon's backup singers and some tasty violin runs offered up by the Bushwick Philharmonic, the Dap-Kings lock into their usual nasty little pocket and the groove blossoms like a soulful red pointsettia beneath Sharon's story. The flip gives Daptone mouth-man Binky Griptite an instrumental taste overwhich he lays down a heartfelt holiday message of tolerance and togetherness. Right on, Santa! That description describes one of the best holiday gifts that I received this holiday season so far, and that is the new Daptone Records holiday single! Purchase the 45 on their website, or get it free when you order $30 of other stuff, and/or download the songs for free above!
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings have added a Brooklyn show. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL: That Brooklyn show is just a week away, in 2009, and in a bowling alley. It'll probably put all the New Years Eve events happening one night later to shame, and it's only $20 (translation: Sharon Jones is playing Brooklyn Bowl on December 30th!) (get tickets) (they play New Years Eve also, but in DC.)
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings recently played a private and super fancy Urbandaddy holiday party, and not long before that they played a show at Starland Ballroom in NJ. A couple of videos from the Jersey show with all tour dates below...

Zoos of Berlin @ Market Hotel in September
Detroit's Zoos of Berlin are coming back to NYC for two shows this month: they'll play December 18 at Matchless and December 19 at Cake Shop. They were great when they played Market Hotel back in September. Here's what I wrote on Soundbites:
Zoos of Berlin are from Detroit and are fronted by Trevor Naud who also spent time (maybe still does) in the notoriously unprolific but occasionally awesome Pas/Cal. Unlike that band's sunshine pop, Zoos of Berlin are more buttoned up and immaculate, like a high society tea... but one that desperately wants to be disco-fest. Naud and turtleneck-wearing bassist Daniel Clark keep it regal, but drummer Colin Dupuis and, especially, keyboardist Will Yates are there to party. The result is like a weird mix of Cardinal and Steely Dan, a combination that is perfected on "Electrical Way" which has Yates laying down a super-funky Clavinet part over most of the song, with a breakdown which is straight out of "Peg." And it just sounds awesome, such good musicianship overcoming the deficiencies of Market Hotel's PA, where they played a few weeks ago.You can download "Electrical Way" at the top of this post. Zoos of Berlin also have a Bowie thing going in there somewhere (yes, his Berlin period if you must know), and there's really nothing like them in NYC right now, which is why you should go despite it being so close to Christmas that you'll probably show up to the gig with shopping bags in tow. (Make room for their album, "Taxis".) They're good so go see them.
While we're on the subject of Pas/Cal offshoots, I would be remiss to not mention Computer Perfection, the fairly new band that features most of Pas/Cal (minus main man Casimir) and who released their debut album last month which fans of their old band will probably like too. I caught them at CMJ and thought they were quite good, despite playing in a room smaller than my bedroom. I will admit being swayed by their spot-on cover of The Flowerpot Men's "Beat City" from the Ferris Bueller's Day Off soundtrack, which was enough to help them lug stuff to their van after the show and buy a copy of their CD. They're not touring right now, but keep an eye out.
Computer Perfection released a Christmas record last year that came out so late it almost missed the holiday, but you can still download it -- for free -- from their website. It's like fruitcake, it's just as good a year later. It also features contributions from Chicago's 1900s, Computer Perfection member LTD, and more. It;s worth the disc space of downloading alone for Aunt Beru & The Juicers' "Santa Brings It" which melds "Here Comes Santa Clause" onto Beyonce's "Single Ladies" which is sure to be a hit at any holiday office party. Grab the Zip file above. Cover art below.

John Waters as the other creepy old Santa...
A John Waters Christmas is hitting the road this December. Six dates are scheduled with a New York City stop at BB King's on December 22nd. The show takes the form of a monologue that "explores and explodes traditional archetypes as [Waters] shares his compulsive desire to give and receive perverted gifts, a religious fanaticism for Santa Claus, and an unhealthy love of true crime holiday horror stories." Tickets for the NY show are on sale. He visits New Brunswick, NJ's State Theatre four days before (12/18) and tickets for that are on sale too. All dates below.
A John Waters Christmas is actually the name of the director's own holiday compilation that features the likes of Fat Daddy, Alvin & The Chipmunks and Tiny Tim. Videos of few of those are below.
BB King's will host another holiday show with Darlene Love on December 13th. The singer is a 2010 nominee for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and she appeared at the museum's two-night MSG show with Bruce & the E Street band. A video of her annual Letterman performance of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is below. Tickets are on sale.
Darlene Love's Love for the Holidays will also be at Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, NJ on Sunday, December 20th. Tickets are on sale.
Elsewhere in Jersey, Darlene teams up with Ronnie Spector for "A Christmas Gift for You" at Red Bank, NJ's Count Basie Theater on Thursday, December 17th. (Both got their holiday start in part from their songs on 1963's A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector.) Tickets are on sale.
Then, Ronnie Spector's annual X-Mas Party runs for two nights at BB King's on Saturday, December 19th and Sunday, December 20th. Tickets are on sale.
Spector's new disc The Last of the Rock Stars (...) has guest appearances that include Keith Richards, Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Patti Smith, Patrick Keeler (The Raconteurs) and Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather). There's also a version of "It's Christmas Once Again" to add to your holiday rotation alongside ubiquitous Ronettes versions of "Sleigh Ride" and "Frosty the Snowman."
Speaking of Patti Smith, she has some annual holiday shows coming up of her own, but those are after Christmas and include New Years Eve.
Dates & songs from all three are posted below...
Bob Dylan will release a brand new album of holiday songs, Christmas In The Heart, on Tuesday, October 13, it was announced today by Columbia Records. All of the artist's U.S. royalties from sales of these recordings will be donated to Feeding America, guaranteeing that more than four million meals will be provided to more than 1.4 million people in need in this country during this year's holiday season. Bob Dylan is also donating all of his future U.S. royalties from this album to Feeding America in perpetuity. The artwork for that record is posted above. More info, video of Kent Jones ripping on the idea on MSNBC, Bob reading Twas The Night Before Christmas, and info on the possibility of Bob Dylan giving directions on your GPS, below...
Christmas In The Heart will be the 47th album from Bob Dylan, and follows his worldwide chart-topping Together Through Life, released earlier this year. Songs performed by Dylan on this new album include, "Here Comes Santa Claus," "Winter Wonderland," "Little Drummer Boy" and "Must Be Santa."

DOWNLOAD: The Long Blondes - Christmas is Cancelled (MP3)
We have decided to call it a day.I knew The Long Blondes broke up, and I knew I had never posted about it before (that letter was posted right before CMJ in October), but I only now realized the reason was so tragic. I hope Dorian does get well enough to play again. That said, the band seems to be in relatively good spirits for the holidays... sort of... because they recently released their "anti-xmas tune" for free download. Grab it above and check out video of them playing Knitting Factory, that was filmed by Joly back whenever it was that they played here, below...
The main reason for this is that I suffered from a stroke in June and unfortunately I do not know when / if I will be well enough to play guitar again.
On behalf of the band I'd like to say a big thank you to anyone who ever came to one of our shows, bought one of our records or danced to one of our songs in a club. Thank you, if it wasn't for you the whole thing would have been pointless.
Finally on a personal note, thanks for all your well wishing messages.

"Oh Me by the Meat Puppets - In late 1993, when Nirvana played their famous "MTV Unplugged" show, they were on tour with Curt and Chris Kirkwood, the brothers who made up the heart of the Meat Puppets. At this point, Cobain was using pretty heavily, and barely made it through soundcheck. During the taping, the Meat Puppets joined Nirvana for three songs, all Meat Puppets originals.Hear it live, maybe, TONIGHT (December 11th) @ Maxwell's in Hoboken. Or try again Friday in Philly, or at the show Saturday (12/13) night in Brooklyn at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Oakley Hall opens both NYC dates. "Oh Me" videos, and all Meat Puppets dates, below...
Each band gave a gift to the other that night: Nirvana, by bringing an influential but essentially underground band up to play with them; the Meat Puppets by basically surrendering those wonderful songs to Nirvana, specifically to Cobain. Obviously, having those songs on Nirvana's "MTV Unplugged" album provided the Meat Puppets with some pretty fair publishing royalties (Allah be praised!). At the same time, thanks to that legendary concert, those songs become Nirvana's -- specifically they are associated with Kurt Cobain and that performance. That's got to be an honor for the Meat Puppets. But who knows, maybe it also stings.
I say this only because the originals are so good; indeed, my own preference is for them, especially the fully electric version of "Oh Me," with its fuzz and building distortion and feedback. Curt Kirkwood's soloing is so haunting and sad on this, growing until the sound is profoundly huge. It's a song that deserves to be heard, especially during a season that is supposed to be about giving."

The Raveonettes have already found themselves on one year-end list for their full-length Lust Lust Lust. This year, the band also released four digital-only EPs (all on Vice Records), including a free remixes EP (ZIP file above) and, most recently, a just-in-time-for-your-ugly-holiday-sweater-party MP3 collection called Wishing You A Rave Christmas. (Here, with a bonus track, on Amazon.) No strangers to holiday music, in 2004, the Raveonettes also contributed an original holiday tune, "The Christmas Song," to the soundtrack of the Tim Allen/Jamie Lee Curtis holiday flick Christmas with the Kranks.
The Raveonettes will headline a NYC show at Webster Hall show on Friday, January 16th (Tickets) with openers Nickel Eye (feat. Strokes' bassist Nikolai Fraiture). Their two Cali dates will feature the recently renamed Soft Pack.

Over the course of the eight days (and before and after), many candles will be lit and many Hanukkah-themed events will be happening in and around New York City. Many will involve music. Here are a few...
