Knitting Factory is hosting the Tinderbox Music Festival today. Female artists will be playing from 1pm till late. Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn (1698 Bergen Street) is hosting a 'Garden Party every Saturday in July. The free shows will open at 4pm, except the first one on July 2nd which opens at 2pm. Pharoahe Monch (who plays a few shows in July) and Baolji play that Emancipation Day Celebration.

Theophilus London (whose last NYC show was at Music Hall of Williamsburg during the Northside Festival) plays the Garden Party on July 23 with Phony PPL (who also opened for Theophilus at Brooklyn Museum). The free show is two days after Theophilus plays a not-free show at Bowery Ballroom on July 21. Tickets for the Bowery show are still on sale.

Theophilus' debut LP Timez Are Weird These Days comes out July 19 on Warner Brothers and features contributions from Holly Miranda and Sara Quin.

Seeing My Morning Jacket play Z on the Friday of the nearly week long CMJ festival immediately knocked all the overhyped bands, blog posts and sponsored parties of the week down a few pegs. This was a band at their peak, sufficiently warmed up and hitting all cylinders after playing 3 shows in the last 4 days. Their night off was spent playing solo or as special guests at other venues in the city. The cavernous Terminal 5 could barely contain the energy that MMJ produced all night.

Z, released in 2005 to almost universal critical praise, marked a turning point as the band brought in an outside producer, John Leckie, and recorded the album at Allaire Studios in the Catskills rather than at home in Kentucky. This was the album that made My Morning Jacket a headlining act at Bonnaroo and an international touring act that headlined Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall.

MMJ took the stage shortly after 9:30 and tore through the three opening songs of the set ("Wordless Chorus", "It Beats 4 U" and "Gideon") before settling down with the fuzzy surf guitar influenced "Off the Record" and the calliope-like and rarely performed "Into The Woods." Although they were performing the songs of Z, I couldn't help but be reminded of their 2006 live album, Okonokos, which starts with the same first three tracks. The "Z" set ended with a 20 minute plus version of "Dondante" which featured lead guitarist Carl Bromel picking up a saxophone and soloing into a Jim James guitar solo using a glow stick as a bow on his guitar.

The band took a brief break and returned to the stage for a encore that ended with The Who's "A Quick One, While He's Away", Prince's "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" and Wham!'s "Careless Whisper". "Careless Whisper" was dedicated to George Michael who Jim James described as "One of the best singers of our lifetime" and encouraged the crowd to "send him some good vibes." James led the audience in a "Bananas" chant while throwing dozens of bananas to the crowd as the show was ending.

Opening act Holy Miranda kicked off her set with the slow building "Pelican Rapids" and by the time she covered Etta James's "I'd Rather Go Blind" she'd earned hundreds of new fans.

Unlike at her recent Phoenicia porch show (the same porch Dean & Britta played) where she played all covers, Holly Miranda played a bunch of songs off her new album at her July show at Littlefield which was being taped for Baeble in conjunction with BrooklynVegan. Five of those newer songs make up the six song setlist that ended up making the final cut for the video that is live over at Baeble now. "Metric played the exact same set (shaved a song or two) in the exact same way as they did at Terminal 5 a few months ago but with two big differences.The first was they kicked off with the now well known "Eclipse (All Yours)", their big deal single from their big deal appearance on the Twilight soundtrack, which is apparently some big deal with a lot of people (I wouldn't know, I refuse to watch anything in which vampires sparkle in the sun instead of burn). The live performance was infinitely better than the record. It fit right into the Metric mold. The other big difference was the band sounded better as a whole in the open air of Prospect Park than they did at the acoustic horror of Terminal 5. Same band, same performance, better venue = the awesome thunder of Metric in full display." [Sonic Parthenon]

Emily Haines also wore a very similar shirt to what she wore at Terminal 5.

Joan (Wasser) as Policewoman (who I saw in the crowd at Rufus Wainwright at the same venue a couple of weeks earlier) and Holly Miranda (who played a much smaller NYC three days later, and a medium sized show a month earlier) opened for Metric Thursday night, August 5th, at the all-female-frontwoman, free Celebrate Brooklyn show (two nights before Sharon Jones). The Most Cake: So, just before we sat down, we were talking about our mutual love for the band Fucked Up. How likely are we to see you moshing to them this evening [at the Truck Festival]?

Holly: Not likely, not after last time. I got punched square in the nose, right here (Holly points at her nose), and then had to go on tour right afterwards with Tegan and Sara, and then every time I would touch my nose they made fun of me. I mean, I punched the guy back and we just kept going. It was fair game. But I think I'll probably stay away from the mosh pit tonight.

The Most Cake: With the T+S tour, I imagine you got to witness that crazy kind of fame those girls have. They seem to have a very fanatical following. Does it scare you, the more intrusive side of that...all the YouTube bitchiness?

Holly: That's not something i've had to deal with much so far. But I have friends who have to deal with it on a constant level. I don't know...it doesn't look like a lot of fun, basically *laughs*. It looks like it kinda sucks. I think it's the anonymous, crazy online comments and messages and that kind of shit that's really soulless to me. It doesn't really have anything to do with the music anymore, or the person who's receiving it. It's just kind of about getting really intensely involved in their lives. I don't know; it baffles me a little.

The Most Cake: If everyone's listening to Holly Miranda...who is Holly Miranda listening to?

Holly: Well I'm always listening to Otis...I'm always listening to old soul. But lately I've really been into Little Dragon; I like her a lot. I saw her in December in LA play a show at the El Rey which was awesome. I like the new Yeasayer record, thought I haven't gotten to see them live. This band we were on tour with on the east coast, called Braids, from Montreal; they're incredible. Umm. Who else? Oh, Dave Sitek? The guy from TV on the Radio who produced my album? He has a solo work coming out under the name Maximum Balloon that is epic. He did all the music and then had a different singer coming in, so there's Karen O, David Byrne, Katrina Ford, the chick from Little Dragon, I did a song, Ambrosia Parsley from Shivaree. It's really really good.

Like the Antlers and Nicole Atkins before her, Holly Miranda was paired with wine for a "Vivo in Vino" show in the East Village on Sunday night (August 8th) (Holly played Prospect Park with Metric three days earlier). Her set, as Kyle points out below, was "comprised almost entirely of covers. she played covers by: the smiths, leonard cohen, jealous girlfriends, johnny cash, lauryn hill (ex factor sing-a-long), and some others that are slipping my mind. also played "waves". i think she did about 8 or 9 in total, but wasn't really counting. stunning show."

The crowd congregated at Littlefield, expectantly, as clips from previous concerts played in the background. A camera mounted on a pole extended over the audience to capture Holly Miranda's BV-copresented set for Baeblemusic.

Holly walked on stage to a chorus of "I love you"s from the audience and took her post, stage right. "Are you alright? Are you hot? Don't touch anybody," she joked after the first song. The room was definitely heavy with humidity. As the evening progressed, more and more sweat poured from Holly Miranda and her band. Miranda was joined by a small brass section (trumpet and saxophone) in addition to the usual bass, guitar, and drums and a bevy of surprise guests, including a violin player and four of her friends who jumped on stage to play the sleigh bells for one song. Miranda herself switched back and forth from a guitar and an organ.

Despite the fact that there were a couple of cameras capturing her every move, instead of looking into them, Miranda stared intently at the audience (when her eyes weren't completely closed). Throughout the show, people kept shouting out her name in admiration.

Miranda may be on the petite side, but she possesses a rich, soulful voice with a surprising range and her music is not for the faint of heart. Though some of the songs have mellow intros, they swell during the chorus and it quickly becomes clear that she means business. At the core, her songs fall more squarely into the rock category than your typical singer-songwriter fare. Even her soulful Etta James cover ("I'd Rather Go Blind") ended with Holly rocking out.

She closed her initial set with "Pelican Rapids," a newer song that calls for marriage equality for all. After a minute or two of applause, Miranda and her band came back on stage for a single-song encore ("Singular Acceptance") to cap off the sweaty but satisfying evening.

Holly Miranda @ BV-SXSW @ Club DeVille (more by Tim Griffin)

The bookers for Vivo in Vino are clearly fans of the BrooklynVegan party that took place at Club DeVille on the Friday of SXSW 2010 this year. Their first wine-paired-with-live-music event featured the Antlers. Then they had Nicole Atkins. Now, on Sunday, August 8th they'll present Holly Miranda! $30 tickets for the intimate wine event are on sale.

The wine show is three days after Holly plays a free show in Prospect Park with Metric, and almost exactly a month after Holly plays an $8.00 BV/Baeble-presented show/taping at Littlefield which I also have a bunch of free tickets for. If you want them, enter the previously-mentioned contest for the July 7th Brooklyn show.

Kyp Malone & Holly Miranda @ Bowery Ballroom in May (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)

Holly Miranda has a Celebrate Brooklyn free ($3 suggested donation) show at Prospect Park on the schedule for August 5th. There she'll be opening for Metric and Joan as Police Woman.

Before then, you can catch Holly at a special performance/video shoot at Littlefield on Wednesday, July 7th (622 Degraw Street, between 3rd and 4th Ave in Brooklyn). The show will be recorded for Baeblemusic for their The Guest Apartment video series. They're hosting the concert along with Brooklyn Vegan (us) and her label, XL Recordings. The show is 21+ and tickets ($8) are on sale and we have a bunch of tickets to give away - details below. If you miss the show, look for the videos online soon after (we'll post them). If you make it, doors are at 7:30, there will be drink specials and a Baeble video screening and then Holly plays at 9pm.

Holly Miranda's headlining-tour-closing Bowery show in May featured a full slate of special guests (as well a horn section), so who knows who'll show up. Holly is a guest vocalist herself on the forthcoming David Sitek/Maximum Ballroom album.

TV on the Radio guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and producer David Andrew Sitek has announced his new project Maximum Balloon. Not surprisingly, the TVOTR / Yeah Yeah Yeahs / Liars / Dragons of Zynth / Holly Miranda / Scarlett Johansson producer worked with a host of guest artists on the project, which will see the light of day in the form of a self-titled album on August 24th via DGC/Interscope Records.

"...Then Aku (Dragons of Zynth) called and said he was in town and asked what I was up to and I said, "Making a song that you have to come and fix!" So he came by the studio and he laid the vocals down. We pretty much started Maximum Balloon on that day."

Other guest artists on the album will include Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone from TVOTR, Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Yukimi Nagano from Little Dragon, Holly Miranda, Theophilus London and more. David Byrne is rumored. Aku from Dragons of Zynth is featured on "Tiger," the first track to be released off the album. "Tiger" will be available on iTunes and all digital partners on June 15th, but you can also hear it in a video below, or today at www.MaximumBalloon.com. In addition to "Tiger", Maximum Balloon will be regularly releasing a series of digital singles in the weeks leading up to the release of the album.

After opening sets by Grooms and Class Actress, Holly Miranda headlined her own show at Bowery Ballroom in NYC last night (5/27). Her setlist included covers of Yoko Ono and Etta James, and a Jealous Girlfriends song (her old band). There was a horn section consisting of Michael Irwin (trumpet) and Maria Eisen (sax) of the Woes, and a lot of other special guests on stage before the encore. She and TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone aka Rain Machine performed a duet, and then there was a sing-along in support of equal marriage rights for everyone. Guests on stage for the group number, in addition to Holly's band, included Kyp, Nicole Atkins, Scott Matthew, Ellie Everdell of The Hundred In The Hands, Billy McCarthey and Eric Sanderson of Pela (rip), French singer-songwriter Soko, Brendan Coon (co-writer of Holly's song "Forest Green, Oh Forest Green"), Sharron Sulami of Pink Noise, Holly's friend and tour manager Raimy Rosenduft, and Celebrate Brooklyn's Nadine Goellner.

Holly Miranda @ a BV party in Austin (more by Tim Griffin)

Metric will headline a free Celebrate Brooklyn show at the Prospect Park Bandshell on August 5th. Openers for that date are fellow female-fronted groups Holly Miranda and Joan as Policewoman. The show joins a summer lineup of free entertainment that also includes The Swell Season and The Low Anthem. All shows listed HERE.

Way before that, May 16th to be exact, you can catch Metric at Terminal 5 in Manhattan (tickets are still on sale). It's the first of four dates the Canadian band play with Bear in Heaven. Those dates are below. In October Metric will be in the NYC area as part of their tour with Muse.

Joan (as Policewoman) doesn't really have any other shows coming up, but you may have just caught her at the Truck America Fest over the weekend in the Catskills.

You can catch Holly Miranda soon too though. She plays her own headlining show at Bowery Ballroom on May 26th. Tickets are still on sale. Grooms and Class Actress are opening that show. Those at Stony Brook University can catch Holly this Thursday night (5/6). All dates below....

"...The bands were running late at Club Deville, but I was pleased to hear Centromatic on the stage. They sounded like classic rock and when Steve Miller Band's "Rock'N Me" came on after their set, it was in the same vein, but Centromatic was above and beyond.

Lucero came on next and killed it. Nichols' voice is like sandpaper on gravel and it has a booze-soaked and sorry quality that makes it sound like the hard nights and heartbreaks that he sings about are real experiences. Lucero is one of the few bands that I've seen (Free Energy comes to mind as well) that broke through to fans. Quite a few folks were dancing, jumping, singing and generally rocking out during their set..." [Rock Candy]

...It was a perfectly rowdy ending to the BrooklynVegan/DailyMotion day party at Club DeVille on Friday, March 19th (one of our seven shows this year). The day's eclectic lineup ranged from country to electro to singer-songwriter to comedy. We also made a huge effort to feed people and give away free stuff this year. Those who stopped by the free show got free Ear Piece ear plugs, Magic Hat beer, Firefly Sweet Tea vodka (that lasted the entire 6+ hours), Gundlach Bundschu wine, Raw Rev bars, Nadamoo ice cream, Hail Merry "Grawnola", breakfast tacos and Daily Juice catering. Action For Animals was on hand with baked goods for sale that helped raise $800 for charity. Somebody (and every band and comedian) won some Original Penguin clothes. Members of Passion Pit (aka the Wet Bandits) played the music between bands. KEXP was filming video. All in all an amazing day.

While her current tour-mates Tegan & Sara were playing a show by themselves at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, Holly Miranda played a packed, free, hometown record release show at the Other Music record store in Manhattan (2/15). Holly Miranda is going to be on tour with Tegan & Sara for quite a while after this weekend. Before then, she'll manage to get a few more hometown dates in. On Wednesday, February 10th (tonight), she plays Happy Ending Music & Reading series at Joe's Pub with authors Joshua Ferris, Ron Carlson and Padgett Powell. Tickets are on sale.

She's also playing a free in-store at Other Music on Monday, February 15th (8pm), while Tegan & Sara play a seated show at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

The spacey, enigmatic "Waves" from her upcoming record, The Magician's Private Library, is posted above. That disc comes out February 23rd on XL. She did an acoustic version of the song in a quiet San Francisco living room (with guitarist Timmy Mislock) the day after a show on her tour with the xx and Friendly Fires last November. Holly Miranda @ Webster Hall - 1/18/2010

Hello,

I'm am writing to you from lovely California [on December 30, 2009]. I have been here since finishing my last tour of 2009 with The XX and The Friendly Fires on the West Coast in early December.

Being as it is two days before New Years Eve, I have been reflecting on the year that has past. I cannot begin to say how grateful I am to everyone who has come out to support Timmy and I on the road. To those of you who have given us warm, home cooked meals; a cozy bed to sleep in or visited me at the merch table and kept me company. We could not have done it with out you.

From the Midwest tour with AA Bondy, the East Coast with The Antlers, Europe with The XX, and then again with The XX and The Friendly Fires on the West Coast. We have been busy, but there has been no shortage of good music and amazing people surrounding us at all times.

I am happy to announce that it looks like the coming year will be more of the same...

First I am so excited to say that we will be opening for Vampire Weekend in New York on January 18th at Webster Hall!

Secondly, beginning in February, we will be touring across the continental United States with Tegan & Sara!!! The tour dates are below.

Last, but not least, I'm happy to announce that my full-length album The Magician's Private Library will be out on XL Recordings February 23rd!

Holly Miranda, who was joined on stage at one point by her friends The Antlers, opened for her labelmates Vampire Weekend at Webster Hall last night (1/18). It was the headliner's 2nd of three NYC shows in a row. The first night was uptown at United Palace with Titus Andronicus. The third is tonight (1/19) at Bowery Ballroom with Nat Baldwin.

Vampire Weekend - Halloween in L.A. (more by Rachel Carr)

As we were saying, openers for each of Vampire Weekend's three NYC shows on January 17th, 18th and 19th have been announced. The first night at United Palace Theater has Titus Andronicus. The second at Webster Hall features Holly Miranda. And the third show at Bowery Ballroom will be opened by Dirty Projector Nat Baldwin. All three nights are sold out.

The NYC gigs come shortly after the January 12th release of VW's Contra, which is currently streaming on the band's Myspace, and will be streaming at KCRW on Tuesday. They're having a release party for the record on Thursday, January 7th at Manhattan Ping-Pong bar Spin. The band will be DJing, there's an open bar, and you can win tickets to United Palace if you're good at ping pong. Flyer and RSVP info are below.

You already know what else is going on with Titus. As for the other openers, Holly Miranda goes on the road with Tegan & Sara through April (currently no NYC stops). Nat Baldwin has a few shows around town, which are posted below.

Holly Miranda & Matthew Caws / Florence & the Machine

"Dressed in flowing white, Florence spilled to the stage with her black-clad band, The Machine. Opening with "Two Lungs," Welch exploded into to chorus. She didn't need all of the considerable orchestra, including the harp, to vibrate the floor of a completely packed Bowery Ballroom. With the Island Records crew stuffed into the balcony, Welch flitted around the stage, pushing her elbows back and popping her chest out like some mechanical and delicate bird. She repeatedly pointed at us, directly, to emphasize elements of her story, only to cover a smile with her hand. She is emphatic and wilting, if these two things are possible at once." [32Ft/Second]

Florence & the Machine headlined Bowery Ballroom and appeared on Letterman last night (10/27). Video from the latter below. It was all part of a short trip for the band who also played the Fader party at Ace Hotel on Saturday and a private show at Soho House on Monday.

Opening the show, coming off a couple of more public CMJ appearances and a recent XL Records signing announcement, was Holly Miranda who was backed by none other than Nada Surf. Nada Surf plays an acoustic show at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight (10/28).

Holly Miranda in a car w/ AA Bondy

At Le Poisson Rouge on Friday evening, Holly Miranda played with a guitarist, Tim Mislock, though she'd do just as well alone. She's got a furious voice that she largely keeps in check, on her dry, spooky, inward-turned rock songs. After a small Internet firestorm early this year, she's signed with XL Records, though she's no more polished for it. During this show, her fangs were intact.

At other recent shows, Ms. Miranda has played with a fuller band (say, a violinist, a bass player and a drummer). That configuration gave her even more punch. Here, joined only by Mr. Mislock, it wasn't quite enough of a boost, though at the end of the set, when Mr. Mislock put down his guitar and fell into a lovely vocal harmony with Ms. Miranda, they seemed like a strong team. Holly Miranda's only other CMJ show was the BrooklynVegan day party on Thursday at Pianos. Her next NYC show is tonight (10/27) at Bowery Ballroom, and speaking of her playing with a fuller band, she'll be backed at the show by Nada Surf. She goes on at 9, before show headliner Florence and the Machine. It is sold out.

Holly Miranda joins The Antlers @ Maxwell's - Oct 3, 2009 (Audrey Culver)

"On their return home after another extensive and triumphant tour, last night The Antlers continued their evolution at Maxwell's [on October 3, 2009]. As a headline band, they packed the legendary Hoboken club and performed a sixty-five minute set of Hospice material -- with several reworked numbers. Opening with a quiet rendition of "Bear", the band immediately turned up the energy as the song growled to a intense conclusion. "Thirteen" followed, with Sharon Van Etten's vocals from the album filled in admirably by set opener Holly Miranda. Holly and her guitarist Tim returned and contributed to the set's highlight -- a thoroughly entrancing version of "Wake"." [NYC Taper taped the show]

The Antlers have announced their first big NYC headlining show. It's at Bowery Ballroom on December 15th. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon (openers TBA).

The Bowery show is a little less than two months after The Antlers play the BrooklynVegan CMJ showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg with The Walter Schreifels Band, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Wheel, Laura Marling, and Fanfarlo (and one more TBA). It's eight days from the time I type this. Tickets are still on sale.

The October 20th Music Hall show is one of many BV shows during CMJ this year. Another one is happening all day at Pianos on Thursday, October 22nd. That full lineup is TBA shortly, but I can tell you that it does include Holly Miranda (who recently signed to XL).

Sharon Van Etten, also referenced in the review above, is on the bill of the free BrooklynVegan (in partnership with Bowery Presents... details TBA) show happening at Pianos on the afternoon of Saturday, October 24th.

Holly Miranda @ Mercury Lounge (more by Tim Griffin)

"XL Recordings is excited to announce the signing of HOLLY MIRANDA. Holly is a New York based musician and her debut album will be released in early 2010. It will be preceded by a 7"/digital single in November with a song called "Forest Green Oh Forest Green" and a cover of Yoko Ono's "Nobody Sees Me Like You Do".

Holly has been singing for as long as she can remember. She first began playing in New York at age 16, when she dropped out of high school in Michigan, told her mom she was going to visit her sister in New York for a few weeks, and never turned back. She soon discovered the world of the East Village and started playing at places like The Sidewalk and meeting kindred spirits in the New York scene. Whether solo or with her band, she's become an artist consistently able to mesmerize with her range as well as her songs.

Holly starts a tour with Antlers tonight, and will be in Europe in October for shows with Wild Beasts and The xx."
