It's been almost nine years since Clear Channel spun off Live Nation (who went on to buy Ticketmaster). Now:
Clear Channel on Tuesday refashioned itself as iHeartMedia, accentuating how the lines between online and AM/FM radio are blurring at the country's biggest company on the broadcast dial.
"It's not a company with a bunch of old radio stations and outdoor [billboards] anymore," Chief Executive Bob Pittman said in an interview. "We've transformed, so let's now take a name that matters."
iHeartRadio is Clear Channel's digital arm, a Pandora-like online service that also hosts the digital streams of the company's 840 traditional radio stations like KIIS FM in Los Angeles. Effective Tuesday, CC Media Holdings Inc. became iHeartMedia Inc. The company's over-the-counter stock ticker symbol will also change, effective Wednesday.
Streaming is the industry's most promising segment of growth, but tech-centered outfits like Pandora -- the Web's biggest radio operator -- and on-demand subscription services like Apple's Beats Music and Spotify tend to attract the most attention as they race to dominate the burgeoning sector. By recasting itself as iHeartMedia, Clear Channel not only recognizes the company itself has changed but also believes it will get due credit in the tech community for its gargantuan scope, Pittman said. Smashing Pumpkins at iHeartRadio Theater presented by P.C. Richard & Son 6/20/12
Smashing Pumpkins (Billy Corgan, Jeff Schroeder, Mike Byrne, Nicole Fiorentino) played an intimate, invite/contest-only, record release show at the iHeartRadio Theater presented by P.C. Richard & Son in NYC last night (6/19). Pictures and the setlist from that event are in this post. Did you go? How was it?
If you weren't able to corner Billy Corgan for an autograph last night (we've got video of that below) and that happens to be your thing, then scoot on down to J&R Music World today (6/20) to get your copy of their new LP Oceania signed. The signing starts at 6PM.
So far no new US tour dates from alternative rock's version of Paul Heyman and his latest batch of Pumpkin-ites, but you can catch them in Australia and East Asia at the dates, along with the rest of the pictures and the setlist, below.

Smashing Pumpkins at Terminal 5 in 2010 (more by Jen Maier)
Billy Corgan's current version of The Smashing Pumpkins (he's the only original member) are set to release their new album, Oceania, next week (6/19) and it's streaming for the week leading up to its release on iTunes. BIlly says it's the band's best record since Mellon Collie. I wouldn't go that far, especially because the overly show-offy drummer makes me long for anything with Jimmy Chamberlain in the band, but it's somewhat refreshing to hear Billy's voice on a batch of new songs, and the writing isn't half bad.
The Pumpkins will be in NYC on the day of the album's release, June 19 for a show at the P.C. Richard & Son iHeartRadio Theater. It's an intimate/private show (200 people) and you can enter for a chance to be there by "liking" this P.C. Richard & Son facebook app. All dates including a Chicago show this week, are listed below.
In other news, Billy Corgan is finally making a pro-wrestling reality TV show. ProWrestling.net reports:
Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins joined Mister Saint Laurent on MLW Radio to discuss his new wrestling company, Resistance Pro, as well as his upcoming album, Oceania. He also revealed that he intends to launch a reality TV show about what it's like running a wrestling organization.Bleacher Report will be posting a new video about Billy's wrestling endeavors every Tuesday for the next month (starting today). Watch part 1 below, along with a list of all dates...
"I'm doing a lot of behind the scenes stuff. We're trying to get a reality show made," Corgan said. "We just signed a deal with a big reality show producer. A guy with an incredible track record. We're in good hands."
"We believe that wrestling is fascinating on many many levels. Socially, politically, even economically. The struggles independent wrestlers go through to try to find work. Those are real struggles that anybody can identify with. We want to show what goes on in a wrestling company behind the scenes.
Silversun Pickups @ Sasquatch Fest (more by Chris Graham)
Silversun Pickups will be in NYC for a set at All Points West on Sunday, August 2nd. It's their first NYC-area show in a while, and their only NYC-area, public show in support of their new album, Swoon, which came out in April on Dangerbird Records. I say it's their only "public" show because they're also playing a private show two days earlier, July 31st at 4:30pm. Presented by iheartradio, the free gig will take place at the new PC Richard & Son Theater (32 Sixth Ave) (capacity of about 200 people). Tickets are required, and we have ten pairs of them to giveaway. Details below.
