Kevin Shea with stitches
Kevin Shea

Bassist/composer Tom Blancarte sent out the following message:

"Breaking news to all musicians in NYC who might be playing at University of the Streets in the East Village:

I just played there with Talibam!, Tim Dahl and Moppa Elliot, and when we were finished, the owner and her son told us that we owed them 50 dollars. When we told them we didn't owe them anything, her son punched my friend Kevin in the face with keys in his hand! He came close to losing his left eye! Please boycott this place, they are bad, bad people."

His friend Kevin is Kevin Shea of Talibam! who posted the above picture of the damage to his own Facebook where he also wrote "Just wanted to say a huge thanks so much everyone for your support and notes!! I really appreciate it ... Thanks for all your advice too. Totally insane night." Check out the comments people are leaving on the venue's Facebook (thx Joly).

Drive-By Truckers @ Stubb's
Drive-By Truckers

Y'ALL:
Last Wednesday, I fell down and cut my hand.
Fifteen stitches in my left palm.
Wish I had a cool story, but I don't.
The movie version would have me getting cut by a bottle of rot-gut whiskey in a bar fight.
No doubt defending the honor of someone or another.
My heroics bookended by a scene of me carrying my hand for reattachment by a disgraced former surgeon in the back of a grimy tattoo shop because lack of insurance would preclude being seen by a real doctor.
I would be brave and not cry or complain.

Hurling would be out of the question.

Ahh, the movie version.

Unfortunately, the truth is kind of tame, lame even.
I was picking my daughter up at first grade, carrying a bottle of water.
I tripped and fell (in front of her entire class).
I fell, shattering the glass which I then duly landed upon, pushing shards up into my hand.
My fucking left hand.
Fifteen stitches in my palm.
No biggie. No cut tendons or damaged muscle. Missed that artery (bled like a stuck pig though).
Hurts like hell, but it won't long and I will be as good as new in a month or less.
Unfortunately, I can't play guitar for a few weeks and we have a tour beginning this week.

In the words of Three Dog Night, "The show must go on".
My friend Kevin told me, as I was bleeding all over the playground, awaiting my ride to the Emergency Room, "You guys have too many guitar players anyway."
Nonetheless, to insure everyone's Premium Rock and Roll Experience, we have recruited our friend Will Johnson, from Centro-matic to fill in on guitar, covering the SG through a Fender Vibro-King parts.
I will be in full front man mode, on other words, it's dancing shoes time.
I always wanted to be Phil Mogg, and for the next couple of weeks...

We only have Will Johnson through New Orleans, then we will have to improvise, but that's one of the things we do best, so STAY TUNED.

So come out to this, hopefully once in a lifetime DBT Show.
We guarantee you a great time and a Premiere Go-Go Extravaganza that you'll be telling your Grandkids about (maybe sooner than later).

Oh and Bob, the 9th is my son's birthday and it's GO TIME.

Long Live Rock and Roll and Country Soul.
Captain Hook
(Patterson Hood)
(or is it Dr. Hook?)

An injured Drive By Truckers played a headlining show at Stubb's in Austin on 9/1 with Will Johnson on guitar and with Will Johnson's band Centro-Matic opening. The New Orleans date has now also passed, but the show goes on and DBT continue their tour on 9/7 in Tuscaloosa AL (a benefit for tornado relief).

The current trek never comes east, but in October DBT play a string of shows with Those Darlins not long after Those Darlins play The Bell House in Brooklyn with The Beets and Brothers. Tickets are still on sale for that show. Centro-Matic play MusicFestNW this coming weekend in Portland.

OMD @ Terminal 5 (more by Dana (Distortion) Yavin)
OMD

A camera boom fell on the crowd at Stubb's during an OMD show at SXSW Friday Night, March 18th. The incident would probably rank in the top 5 things people were talking about on the street (and on Twitter) in Austin last week. OMD have released an official statement which you can read, along with videos of people getting carried out on stretchers and stuff, below...

Anna Calvi

MAJOR BUMMER. "Due to an injury to her arm, Anna Calvi has been forced to postpone her forthcoming live shows in the UK, America and Canada (including her SXSW performances) this month. She is currently under doctor's orders to rest and hopes to reschedule the shows asap.'"

PREVIOUSLY: Anna Calvi injured, cancels UK & NY dates...

Anna calvi

Oh no! Anna Calvi has somehow injured her hand and arm, and so far has cancelled 5 UK dates (Feb 26-Mar 4), and all three upcoming NYC shows (March 8-10). Her shows at SXSW, a BrooklynVegan day party at Emo's on March 16th included (more details TBA soon!), are still on as of this moment, but that could change. Get well soon Anna!

one of these hands is injured...
hands

"Unfortunately Justin's shows this coming weekend will be cancelled. He injured his hand this past weekend and has 19 stitches and there's no way he can play guitar. We apologize for any inconveniences. We're working on rescheduling the Iron Horse show for late August and hope to make an announcement on that soon."
One of those cancelled shows is the Newport Folk Festival which happens this weekend. Elvis Perkins and Dearland replace Justin on the bill.

Justin's next still-scheduled show takes place on Governors Island on August 8th with Josh Ritter & The Royal City Band and Dawn Landes & the Hounds. It's free! (and definitely still happening with Justin as of now)

John Prine plays Newport Folk Saturday, and a show on Governors Island on September 10th.

Yim Yames, who has contributed to a John Prine tribute CD, plays Newport Folk Saturday and a show in NYC tonight with Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore and Preservation Jazz Band who all play Newport Folk on Sunday.

Andrew Bird plays Newport Folk Saturday, and a show in NYC on August 5th.

The Low Anthem play Newport Folk Saturday, and a show in NYC tonight with the Swell Season who play Newport Folk on Sunday.

Speaking of the Swell Season, tickets are on sale for the Frames show at Terminal 5.

A Newport Folk promo video, and some videos of John Prine performing at Bonnaroo this year, below...

Carly Simon

"Lilith organizers are saddened to announce Carly Simon had to withdraw from three Lilith Fair dates (Boston, July 30; New York City, July 31; and Hartford, Aug 1) for medical reasons. Last week, Simon suffered an injury by seriously fracturing and breaking her foot, which will prevent her from performing at these shows. Everyone on the Lilith tour wishes Simon a speedy recovery. Meanwhile, look for information on updated line-ups for these three dates to be announced in the coming days."
That sucks, but note to Lilith Fair: PNC Bank Arts Center is not in NYC!

In freaky related news (or Carly Simon just realized the excuse worked), The Go-Gos cancelled their Lilith Fair dates for almost the same exact reason (and their non-Lilith dates like July 20th at Irving Plaza).

Earlier this month it was announced that Lilith had to cancel 10 dates of the tour, and other artists like Norah Jones and Kelly Clarkson previously pulled out of their shows on the tour.

Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson's website reports that, "We regret to inform you Willie Nelson and Family have to cancel or reschedule various upcoming tour dates. At this time, I am told that shows scheduled for May 7th-15th will be affected. Please contact the venue or original ticket agency for additional details." CMT seems to know that "the cancellation was said to be a torn rotator cuff Nelson suffered". If so, Willie might be in some pain at the Grand Ballroom in NYC TONIGHT (5/6) (definitely not cancelled).

In related news,

On May 27, the Austin City Council will consider a proposal to give West Second Street between Trinity and San Antonio streets the honorary name of Willie Nelson Boulevard, according to a statement from the city.

A statue of the Texas music legend will also be installed on West Second Street near the entrance to the new KLRU's Austin City Limits Studio in the W hotel nd condo project that is under construction. A model of the statue will be unveiled at a ceremony at 6:30 tonight at the studio's current location on the University of Texas campus. [Austin Statesman]

Another reason Austin rules.

Affected & rescheduled dates, many which will now happen during the tour that brings him back to NYC to play Radio City Music Hall, below...

Monotonix injured
Monotonix

The problem with being a performer known for exaggeration and extreme physical antics is, when something seriously goes wrong, nobody believes it at first. And so it went last night that when Monotonix frontman Ami Shalev called for a doctor barely 15 minutes into his band's headlining set, he was, at first, relentlessly heckled.

"I think we finally managed to make history," Shalev said. The crowd cheered, figuring it would be an announcement about the band's debut appearance south of Orlando.

"After more than 700 shows, I think I finally broke my leg," he continued.

More cheering. This was part of the stunt, right?

"Is there a doctor or paramedic?" he asked.

"Suck it up!" Someone yelled.

"Pussy!" Another heckler cried.

But Shalev was obivously in pain. "Fuck you!" he yelled, wincing and grabbing his thigh. "What I need is a doctor or a paramedic, or a wheelchair. Or just a chair." He repeated the request again at least twice.

Confusion then ensued as, yes, there was a doctor or paramedic in the house, who ran to tend to him. A massive bag of ice was produced from behind the bar, and helpers produced an Ace bandage.

Shalev, though, seemed to want to continue the show from a chair, insisting to his handlers and bandmates he could just ice it down. That seemed highly unlikely once the paramedics arrived with a stretcher. Shalev refused to leave on it, but didn't get up either. Nobody from the venue bothered to announce what was going on, instead sending a DJ to the booth to play indie rock as a few people lingered, trying to dance.

Eventually, most of the crowd trickled out. (Some actually demanded refunds. Really? Enjoy your extra $7 or $10, assholes). It was an anticlimactic, deeply disappointing end to what should have been the band's triumphant introduction to South Florida.[Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

The show took place at Respectable Street Cafe in West Palm Beach. Monotonix was in the middle of a short set of dates with Surfer Blood. It's unclear what will happen to the remaining three shows on their tour. More picture of the night are at the New Times.

UPDATE: Pictures from the hospital above, and below with a message from the band about what happened, cancellations, and all tour dates...

"Let's see how long it takes BV to mention that Phil Collins will never drum again." - Anonymous

Phil Collins

In the UK press today, there appeared some articles about Phil's physical state, with some slightly misleading headlines. Here, in Phil's own words, are how he describes his situation:

"There isn't any drama regarding my 'disability' and playing drums.
Somehow during the last Genesis tour I dislocated some vertebrae in my upper neck and that affected my hands. After a successful operation on my neck, my hands still can't function normally.

"Maybe in a year or so it will change, but for now it is impossible for me to play drums or piano. I am not in any 'distressed' state, stuff happens in life."

Phil [Collins]

In other drummers named Phil news, NME reports that "Radiohead drummer Phil Selway has announced that he is set to release a solo album."
Selway, who sings on the album, is currently in the process of recording the as-yet untitled record in his band's Oxfordshire studio.

He enlisted the services of Wilco members Glenn Kotche and Pat Sansone to play on the project, and multi-instrumentalist solo artist Lisa Germano and bass player Sebastian Steinberg have also contributed.

No release date or any more details yet. A video of Phil McKenna playing drums, below...

Placebo @ Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka- Aug 9, 2009 (funa_h)
Placebo

PLACEBO have today announced they have been forced to postpone their forthcoming tour of North America after their lead singer, Brian Molko, collapsed on stage at Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka, Japan. Brian had picked up a virus in Asia which, coupled with jet lag and exhaustion, caused the problem after the first song.

Brian is now back home in London recovering, but has been ordered by his doctors to take a 6 week long period of rest. Regrettably therefore, the band and management have no option but to postpone the forthcoming North American tour.

A similar incident just happened to Steven Tyler and Aerosmith (which is related to the new ZZ Top show at the Beacon Theatre).

For NYC, the Placebo cancellation means no show at Terminal 5 on October 11th (thx remphish). A video that was taken right after Brian fell, and more of the cancellation message, below...

ZZ Top

It is with great regret that AEROSMITH are canceling the remainder of their summer tour, it was announced today [Aug. 17th].

Due to injuries STEVEN TYLER sustained last week when he fell from the stage during a concert in Sturgis, SD, doctors have advised the lead singer to take the time to properly recuperate from the accident that resulted in a broken shoulder and stitches to his head. In his current condition, TYLER is unable to tour and the band wants to give him time to get healthy.

Ticket refunds for the rest of the tour dates with special guests ZZ Top will be available at point of purchase.

TYLER fell from the stage during the August 5 show that was part of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Western South Dakota. The mishap occurred while he was dancing during the band's "Love in an Elevator." TYLER was subsequently airlifted to a hospital and then returned to Boston to consult with his own doctors.

A video of Tyler's spill is re-posted below.

Meanwhile, Aerosmith tourmates ZZ Top have been adding and rescheduling dates to make up for many of the cancellations. In lieu of their Setpember 14th MSG show with Aerosmith, ZZ Top will be playing on September 18th at NYC's Beacon Theatre. There's no ticket details yet. The dates on their tour that have been confirmed are posted below...

Big Valley Jamboree - knocked over toilets on August 1, 2009 (Taylor and Kevin)
Big Valley Jamboree

"Family has identified Donna Moore of Lloydminster as the woman killed at the Big Valley Jamboree after the festival's main stage collapsed during a severe thunderstorm Saturday.

Moore's son, Mike Tebbe, spent Sunday together with family and said he was not prepared to talk about his mother yet.

Moore was a huge country music fan who was at the festival for the weekend, said friend Warne Noyce.

"She was pumped to go to Big Valley. It makes me sick to my stomach because she was such an awesome lady," he said. "She was hanging out watching music with people she loved."...

...Stage speakers fell on Moore, crushing her, after a wind gust of about 100 kilometres per hour toppled stage scaffolding." [Calgary Herald]

The final day (Sunday) of the Camrose, Alberta festival was cancelled after the tragedy. The next band set to play on Saturday when the storm hit was Kevin Costner & Modern West (yes, that Kevin Costner).

NYC had their own storms this weekend too, causing chaos and cancellations for outdoor music, but luckily no tragedies.

DOWNLOAD: WAVVES - Mickey Mouse (MP3)
Wavves

WAVVES' Nathan Williams successfully performed with a broken wrist at the Bowery Ballroom and Pitchfork Festival, but ended up canceling his scheduled appearance at L.A.'s the Smell to get surgery on the fracture (actual x-ray pic which he posted to MySpace above). In the note announcing the surgery, he also posted a demo for the song "Mickey Mouse." He wrote, "This was a demo that I never ended up coming back to and probably wont end up doing anything with but jam on it n-e-wayz." You can get that track above.

WAVVES' post-surgery plans include almost two months of touring with fellow California band Ganglians (who visited NYC for a pair of shows in July).

The tour will stop in NYC for a show at Santos Party House on Thursday, Sepember 24th and a Todd P show the Friday, Sept. 25th. Tickets for the Santos show are on sale. All dates below...

Brent of Zoroaster
Zoroaster

Received this piece of news late yesterday....

Brent Anderson [bassist for Zoroaster] has torn a ligament in his hand, and is at the doctor today, hoping he can avoid surgery. Needless to say he is unable to play guitar at the moment.
Unfortunately, that means Zoroaster have cancelled their appearance at the BV-BBG Northside Showcase THIS Sunday (6/14) at Europa, as well as an additional four other dates (listed below). No word on how this affects the rest of their (considerable) touring schedule, but as of now they are scheduled to play The Studio @ Webster Hall with The Gates of Slumber and Serpentcult on 8/9 (tickets here).

Even without Zoroaster, there are an additional EIGHT bands on TWO stages including the recently added Liturgy. That's less than $2 a band after fees or A LOT less if you use your Northside badges to the fullest. Doors are at 7. Full lineup also below...

Valient Thorr @ Roseland, (more by Chris LaPutt )
Valient Thorr

Valient Thorr will make their return to Brooklyn on April 26th at Trash Bar! There are no advanced tickets - $10 gets you in. The show is just one of a gang of shows for the Thorriors, who have been forced to roll solo after Early Man dropped off of their tour:

Unfortunately, due to an arm/back injury that I [ed: vocalist/guitarist Mike Conti] suffered after our last tour, we have had to cancel all of our tour dates this month with Valient Thorr so I can get some much needed rest. We will hit the road again after this month and all summer long in support of our new full length which will come out this summer. -[myspace]
Early Man also revealed the name of their new album, Death Potion, due later this year on their new label The End Records. Their Beware The Circling Fin EP dropped late last year.

Valient Thorr released Immortalizer and the In Heat DVD in 2008.

This isn't the first time that VT and EM have toured (or not toured) together. The pair played Bowery Ballroom together last year (VT pics here, EM pics here).

Full VT tour dates, including a pair with Turbonego and Zeke (!), and videos below..

Chi Cheng, Bassist for Deftones
flat tire

Hello everyone,

It deeply saddens me to inform you all that our brother Chi Cheng was involved in a terrible car accident last night. He is currently in a Northern California Hospital in serious, but stable condition. I am on my way up North right now to be by his side along with the rest of our band mates and family. Chi is one of the strongest people I know, and I'm praying that his strength will get him through this. Please say a prayer for him as well.

-chino [moreno, of the Deftones]

Other news sources are saying he's in a coma. Our prayers are with him.

Deftones were working on their follow-up to 2006's Saturday Night Wrist, while blogging away about it.

Weedeater @ Knitting Factory, Aug 2008 (davebgimp)
Weedeater

Weedeater have dropped off their tour with Today Is The Day:

We regret to announce that our Oct/Nov dates are now canceled. Shep broke his hand in a bicycle accident and he needs orthopedic surgery. Unfortunately he will not be healed in time to join the tour with Today is the Day. We are all very bummed about this, and although we won't be there, we encourage all of you weed-metalists to go to these shows and support Today is the Day. Please wish Shep a speedy recovery and we will see you all again soon!
Today Is The Day is still on and Wetnurse will now provide direct support at the Knitting Factory on 11/5 (tommorrow). Tickets are still available. All/affected dates are below...

Jim James @ Coachella (more by Ryan Muir)

My Morning Jacket singer and guitarist Jim James was injured during the Southern-rock band's concert Tuesday night at the University of Iowa.

James slipped and fell about 30 minutes into the band's set at the Recreation Building and was taken to a hospital. The remainder of the show was canceled. Officials with SCOPE, the UI's concert organization, would not say where James was taken and declined further comment.

James apparently hit his head in the fall, which happened in the dark between songs. The extent of his injuries were not known.

My Morning Jacket's four other members left the stage seconds after James fell. Drummer Patrick Hallahan returned to the stage several minutes later to say James fell and his injury was being assessed. About 10 minutes later, Hallahan and the rest of the band, minus James, took the stage to say the show was canceled.

"Jim was really hurt, he's heading to the hospital," Hallahan said. "We're really sorry, this has never happened before."

At least one fan yelled "refund!" but the majority of the crowd cheered in a show of support for James.
[Iowa Gazette] (thx Eric)

That article was published last night. Since then Jim was treated and released from the hospital. My Morning Jacket is scheduled to play MSG on New Years Eve.

---

On a completely unrelated note, rapper Jim Jones is strangely playing Mercury Lounge on December 1st (rescheduled from October 13th).

Sorry to be delivering bad news, but The LK's show tonight has been canceled due to a band-member's injury. Lindefelt hurt his neck, and the band will be spending the day at a chiropractor's office in Pennsylvania. Pela's Billy (safely) landing a few days earlier (hunta)
Pela

We are writing to you as our van heads back to New York. Billy has already returned to New York via plane, and is preparing for surgery.

During last night's show at Schuba's in Chicago Billy fell off the stage, landing on a broken pint glass. This happened during the triumphant finale of the set; the stage was crowded with people dancing and singing to 'Cavalry', while a strobe light turned their vision into a cut screen movie. His left hand has a gash on the palm, and a deep slice in his pinky finger which also cut tendons.

We regrettably must announce that Schuba's was the last night of the tour.

We promise to make up each and every show as soon as possible and apologize to everyone who purchased tickets. Arrangements are being made with all of the clubs on how best to handle the situation. We will have more information soon.

Webmaster note: you can send your best wishes to billy@pelamusic.com and I'll forward them to him. -Pela

Check out a video they filmed in the Chicago hospital below...
