The Antlers at Moogfest (more by Diana Wong)

We recently mentioned that Sharon Van Etten and Shearwater are planning a tour together that hits NYC at Music Hall of Williamsburg on February 24 and Bowery Ballroom on February 25. Tickets for both NYC shows are available for AmEx presale now, and general sale starts Friday (11/11) at noon. All dates have also since been announced and are listed below.
After the tour, Sharon will go on a string of dates with The War on Drugs, who open for The National at Beacon Theatre the night before Sharon does. Sharon's new album, Tramp, comes out February 7 via Jagjaguwar.
Sharon's friends and fellow Brooklynites The Antlers are following their release of Burst Apart, which came out earlier this year, with the (together) EP, which features material from the Burst Apart sessions. It includes collaborations with Neon Indian, Bear In Heaven, Nicole Atkins, and a cover of The xx's "VCR," which you can download above. The EP's tracklist is below. The Antlers are currently on a European tour and will return to NYC for a Webster Hall show on December 10 with Suuns. Tickets for that show are still available.
Speaking of The xx, they've recently begun working on a new album and have started a blog, where they've posted the message:
We have started recording our second album! We have also started this blog where we will post our inspirations + pictures + favourite songs. We hope you enjoy it! Lots of Love, The xx---
The Walkmen, whose drummer Matt Barrick guests on Sharon's new album, are also working on a new album with producer Phil Ek which will be released next year on Fat Possum/Bella Union.
Julianna Barwick, who is also a guest on Sharon's album, recently released the Matrimony Remixes EP, which features remixes of two of the tracks off of her most recent LP, The Magic Place, which came out earlier this year. The entire EP is available to stream and download for $5 on bandcamp and features remixes by Diplo & Lunice, Helado Negro, Alias Pail, and Prince Rama. Julianna also provided guest vocals to Korallreven's debut LP, which comes out November 15 via Acephale. Her vocals appear on the song "Sa Sa Samoa," which you can download above.
All dates and (together) tracklist below...
Sharon at LPR in October (more by Toby Tenenbaum)

As mentioned, Sharon Van Etten signed to Jagaguwar and will release her next album with them in early 2012, which Aaron Dessner (of The National) is producing. A release date still hasn't been set for the album, but we now know that it's called Tramp and will feature contributions from Matt Barrick (of The Walkmen), Doveman, Zach Condon, Jenn Wasner (of Wye Oak), and Julianna Barwick.
After Sharon opens for The National at Beacon Theatre (12/13) (tickets), she'll go on a tour in support of her new album with one of her favorite bands Shearwater. That tour hasn't been announced in full yet (update: now it has), but it hits NYC on February 24 at Music Hall of Williamsburg and February 25 at Bowery Ballroom, and also includes two Chicago shows. Tickets for the MHOW show, and the Bowery Show, go on sale Friday (11/11) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (11/9) at noon.
Shearwater also have a new home (Sub Pop), and they'll be releasing their next album on the label in early 2012. They released some live recordings and experimental pieces on their bandcamp back in April in honor of the signing.

Prince Sun Arawama @ Music Hall of Williamsburg

Though they didn't get to play PS1 because of Irene, Sun Araw managed to sneak in a pre-hurricane show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday night with Prince Rama (who have more shows coming up soon), Julianna Barwick, Pterodactyl, and Teengirl Fantasy (DJ set). The night ended with the Sun Araw/Prince Rama collaborative jam they call Prince Sunarawma. Multiple reports say Sun Araw was the highlight of the night. Fleet Foxes / Zola Jesus

Pitchfork Fest day two (7/16) had a pretty great variety of acts. In addition to newer acts like No Age, Zola Jesus and Twin Shadow, day two made way for a number of more classic artists including the recently reunited Dismemberment Plan, hardcore punk 'supergroup' OFF!, and instrumental hip hop vet DJ Shadow. You might include Destroyer and The Radio Dept. in that group too, who both played day two of the fest.
Fleet Foxes, who also played Pitchfork Festival in 2008, headlined. Catch Fleet Foxes in NYC when their tour with The Walkmen hits Williamsburg Waterfront on September 24. Tickets for this great double bill are still on sale.
Gang Gang Dance (pics) and G-Side (pics) played day two also. More pictures from that day below...
Prince Sunarawma at Brave New Books at SXSW (by Erez Avissar)

The bill is looking pretty stacked on August 26 at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Sun Araw, Prince Rama, Julianna Barwick, Pterodactyl, and Teengirl Fantasy (DJ set). Check ticketmaster for tickets, probably next week when the show gets officially announced.
The Brooklyn show will be the first NYC performance of Sun Araw and Prince Rama's aptly titled joint project Prince Sunarawma. They debuted the project during SXSW at Brave New Books on March 19 (pictured above). The show will also be the album release show for Sun Araw's upcoming LP Ancient Romans, due out three days earlier on August 23 via Sun Ark / Drag City. Catch Sun Araw and Tanlines again the next night (8/27) at PS1's Warm Up.
Prince Rama has other upcoming shows happening sooner too, like... this Saturday (7/9) on the Market Hotel Roof in Brooklyn where Prince Rama will celebrate the release of the first single off their new LP Trust Now, which will be released on October 4 via Paw Tracks. According to the facebook event, "At sunset, 30 mini-cds containing the new single will be tied to balloons and released off the roof into the great beyond." And by "into the great beyond" they of course mean into someone's backyard or stuck on an electrical pole or in a tree or in a bird's nest or down a dolphin's throat, or stuff like that. Prince Rama and special guests will also DJ and Total Slacker will VJ. No word on who will BJ, or whether there will be JJ. "Cosmic Yoga led by Austin Samsel at 7:00PM, get in the zone." FREE.
Prince Rama also DJs on July 21 at Glasslands with Julian Lynch and Dent May. Tickets are on sale now.
You have a few opportunities to catch Teengirl Fantasy before the show as well. They open the sold out James Blake show at Webster Hall on July 13. They'll also head out on tour with PIctureplane later this month, which hits NYC on July 22 at a TBD location and July 23 at Coco 66 with Gatekeeper. Tickets for the Coco66 show are still available.
As mentioned in This Week in Indie, Pterodactyl also plays Saturday (7/9) at Death By Audio. The show is Grooms' record release party for their new LP Prom which drops next week via Kanine. The Immaculates are also on the bill. Pterodactyl will release the LP Spills Out this November on Brah/Jagjaguwar.

DOWNLOAD: Julianna Barwick - The Magic Place (MP3)

"The Magic Place was a tree on our farm," says Louisiana-raised Brooklynite Julianna Barwick. "It was in the back pasture. It was one tree that grew up, down and around. You had to crawl in and once you were inside, it was like there were different rooms, and you could actually lay in the branches. We named it 'The Magic Place' because it really was magical, especially for a kid, and that's how I feel about my life right now--without trying to sound too hippy dippy or cosmic, this year has definitely been a magical one."Julianna Barwick's new LP The Magic Place is out now (it's been out for a while actually) via Asthmatic Kitty and she'll be celebrating that fact at her official record release show at Glasslands in Brooklyn tonight (May 10) with Helado Negro (who are also celebrating a new Asthmatic Kitty record) and Alias Pail. Tickets are still available (at the door too).

Evan Dando at The Bell House (more by Graeme Flegenheimer)

Evan Dando & The Lemonheads have a few random upcoming dates scheduled. The Lemonheads will share a bill with The Canon Logic on April 28th at Maxwell's in Hoboken. Tickets are still available. You can also catch Josh Lattanzi of The Lemonheads at Bowery Ballroom on May 26 & 27 as part of the Bob Dylan tribute that will also include members of the Strokes, Hold Steady, etc, etc.
All other upcoming Evan Dando dates are in other countries at the moment, including a June 16th Evan & Juliana Hatfield show in Toronto for the NXNE festival which, like Brooklyn's own multi-venue festival Northside, recently expanded its lineup. Some of the other bands playing are in the title of this post. The rest are listed below.
All Dando-related dates and some videos below too...

The second annual Hopscotch Festival will go down in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, across 12 different venues with over 135 bands, from September 8th through 10th. The lineup this year runs the gamut of independent music... from traditional indie staples (The Flaming Lips, Guided By Voices, Superchunk) to southern-inflected rock (Drive-By Truckers) to noise (Prurient) to hip hop (Beans) to garage (Jeff The Brotherhood) to funk (Budos Band) to metal (Krallice), and everywhere in between (Swans, Rhys Chatham, etc etc). Tickets are currently on sale. Full lineup is below.
Hopscotch happens almost three months after Guided By Voices play a Brooklyn Northside Festival show in McCarren Park (tickets) which is one day after Beirut plays a Northside Festival show on the same McCarren Park stage with... Sharon Van Etten (though she may have been accidentally announced at one point, they officially kept her placement on the bill under wraps until after Saturday's Music Hall of Williamsburg show). Tickets for Beirut/SVE are still on sale, and another opener will be added too.
Guided by Voices (whose Brooklyn show also has more openers coming) are also playing Pitchfork in July with Animal Collective whose Prospect Park show is now on AmEx presale.
Swans' upcoming NYC show is now on AmEx presale too.

Sharon Van Etten and full band played two NYC area dates this weekend as part of an extended weekend of shows that would see her eventually link up with Bowerbirds who arrive back in NYC on Tuesday (10/12). If you missed either her 10/8 show at Rock Shop with Julianna Barwick and She Keeps Bees, or her 10/9 show at Mercury Lounge with Kyp Malone, never fear, SVE will return to the NYC stage next week to play the annual Chouette day party, this year at Bruar Falls, on 10/20 during CMJ. The show, which will also feature Lower Dens, Highlife, and Sebastian Blanck, will kick off at 3PM and will feature SVE in the top slot (at 6PM). Set times are below.
Not long after CMJ, Sharon Van Etten heads out on the road with Junip. All dates, as well as pictures from Rock Shop are below (Mercury Lounge pictures are on the way)...

Julianna Barwick @ LPR

"Julianna Barwick started off the night and in very simple terms her set was incredible... Eluvium was next on the bill...and his set turned out to be also quite impressive. It was a mix of quiet but weeping guitar work, to harsh and fast played guitar buzz on top of low key to surprising beat driven piano pieces. Throughout the set there was various nature like samples being played as well as the other members in his live band using Wii remotes that were connected to there computers that were somehow manipulating the sounds of there instruments (something that was defiantly amusing to watch). While Eluvium set was quite terrific it was kind of overshadow by the earlier set of the night that had just left me so speechless." [Witchmond]That review is from the May 17th at DC9. Two nights later (last night, May 19th) the Eluvium/Barwick tour hit Le Poisson Rouge in NYC. It was followed by an after-party in Brooklyn that included a live set by Blissed Out and DJ sets by Pitchork's Ryan Schreiber (RAVVES), Chocolate Bobka's McGregor (McG), Todd P and Erez Avissar who is also the one who took almost all of the pictures of the party that are in this post. The ones of Julianna Barwick and Eluvium at LPR were taken by Christopher Person. Both of their sets of pictures continue below...

The Blow @ Great Scott in Boston

The Blow, recent NYC transplant Khaela Maricich's one-woman pop band, wrapped up a two-week stretch of tour dates with a sold out (and awesome) show at Glasslands in Brooklyn on Thursday (5/13). Also on the bill were Acrylics and Julianna Barwick (who played the National's High Violet Annex one night earlier).
Khaela performed songs that'll presumably end up on her forthcoming EP, which is due later this year. There's video of a new song and the Poor Aim: Love Songs tune "Come on Petunia" (which borrows a chorus from the Police's "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic") posted below...

Martha Wainwright @ the High Violet Annex

As advertised, INLETS, ZACHARY CALE, HELADO NEGRO, JULIANNA BARWICK, THE LUYAS (who came all the way from Montreal for the 20 minute performance), TALK NORMAL, ARLT (from France) and MARTHA WAINWRIGHT played short sets at the National's High Violet Annex space in NYC last night. The makeshift venue was created to promote the band's new album with the same name and will feature a different lineup of stuff curated by the band each night. Last night was the second evening. The first, as mentioned, had DJs that included members of Blonde Redhead. Tonight, night three, will have movies and live sets by Phosphorescent, The Antlers, Sharon Van Etten and possibly others. It's safe to say that The National will play it at least once before it ends Saturday night (right before the show they're playing at BAM). More pictures & some videos from last night below...

The National's temporary venue next to Other Music in NYC opens on Tuesday, May 11th at 7pm. "Celebrating the release of 'High Violet' (May 11, 4AD), The National will take over the now-vacant space at 13 E 4th St next to Other Music in downtown NYC. Dubbed 'The High Violet Annex' the space will be the site of National curated events throughout the week." Ends up it will only be open for two three hours a day - a mix of live bands and DJs and contests and other stuff.
The National are rumored to be playing on at least one of the days, but it won't be the first day (5/11 - see below), the second day (5/12 - see below), and maybe it won't be the last day because if it is, the band is going to be in a rush (5/15 - the band plays BAM). The flyer, times and the partial lineup, below...

Eluvium...

"I sort of decided that I wanted to do something that I hadn't done before, or at least not since I was a teenager," said [Eluvium/Matthew Cooper]. "I wanted to work more in the pop space and to use lyrics as an instrument."The new record from Portlander Matthew Cooper aka Eluvium, Similes, out now on Temporary Residence (the same label The Books signed to for their new LP, The Way Out, due in July). Eluvium is going on tour for the month of May, and about half of those shows will be with another dreamy, textured solo band, Brooklyn's Julianna Barwick. They play (Le) Poisson Rouge on Wednesday, May 19th. Tickets are on sale.Cooper went back to work, scrapping the album he'd been working on and creating a new set of songs, this time with words...Cooper has been calling Similes a pop record since he finished it. His label people tell him not to, that this is misleading, that in the market pop means something entirely different than these ethereal songs. But Cooper remains stubbornly attached to the label. "Oddly, I kind of feel that I have yet to make a record that isn't a pop record," he said. "I listen to what I've been doing with ambient and noise and drone and textural stuff and relative to what I was usually influenced by, like Stockhausen or Steve Reich or John Cage, it just seems so much more pop. There are chord changes and melody. It's really not that far from the concept of pop music."
[Pop Matters]
Julianna recently signed to Asthmatic Kitty. Her debut on that label will be out in 2011. She's expected to release another record too, a collaborative album put together with previous tourmates Roberto Lange (Epstein and Helado Negro) and Jonathan Dueck. Her debut, Sanguine, getting a vinyl re-release on M'Lady's in June. And the song above is from her recent Florine EP.

Dirty Projectors completed their tour and four-night NYC run in style on Sunday (11/22). The evening started with a beautiful set of music by Julianna Barwick who was followed by the mind-blowing Tune-Yards. It's been said before, I'll say it again. Merrill Garbus is an extremely talented girl and the crowd went nuts for her as she looped and strummed and drummed and sang. Backed by a bassist, her performance was even more special because her parents were in the crowd. She mentioned them a few times and even thanked them at the end for having her.
I'd been hearing rumors about special guests possibly joining the Dirty Projectors at some point this week, but nothing happened at the first three shows (1 at Bowery and 2 at Music Hall of Williamsburg). Then Sunday the rumors started getting louder, especially the one about The Roots showing up.
The Roots and Dirty Projectors first met when DP were the musical guests at Fallon. Questlove was in love. Some thought that DP were going to join the Roots at a show in Brooklyn a few days after that TV appearance, but it never happened. It did this time though. Three members of the Roots, Questlove included, joined the band on stage for two songs ("Stillness" and "No Intention" I think?). The show was already great before that, but everyone went so wild and was dancing like crazy when the Roots came out. The energy in the room was off the charts, and stayed in the air even after the guests left the stage. The band was supercharged too as they finished their pre-encore set in one of the strongest ways I've ever seen them play.

During the short encore break another microphone was brought to the stage. At that point I knew there was no question that David Byrne would be joining Dirty Projectors once again (it previously happened at least two times - at the Dark Was the Night charity concert and then again at Bonnaroo). Sure enough, Mr. Byrne helped them end the two song encore with a slightly-unrehearsed version of Knotty Pine (the song he and the band wrote together for the Dark Was the Night album).
Amazing night. More pictures of the headliner and guests and the setlist below..

BV: And you also played on the new Doveman record, The Conformist, which came out October 20th.National frontman Matt Berninger sings on The Conformist too. And like the album, and almost anything Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman) does, a private album release party Doveman held in a NYC loft during CMJ was full of guest stars. Sean Lennon & Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Dawn Landes, Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields), Bryce Dessner, and Justin Bond were all in the house (and performing with Doveman) on Friday, October 23rd. Pictures from that show are continued below.Bryce Dessner: Yeah the three of us, my brother and Bryan from [The National] all play on that record. We're kind of like the house band, so we back him up for a bunch of those songs.
A more public album release show happens in NYC, tonight (11/1), at Mercury Lounge. Sean Lennon & Charlotte Kemp Muhl will be there again, but this time as headliner of the show. Doveman plays right before them and as a member of their band. White Circle (Josh Wise of French Kicks) is first of fourth on the bill. The talented Julianna Barwick plays right before Dovemen. Sounds like a great way to spend a Sunday night.
On November 3rd Doveman is going out on tour with The Swell Season, though the Swell Season's Radio City date isn't listed as one of the shows he'll be opening. More pictures from the apartment show, and all tour dates, below....
