Moldy Peaches reunion @ Knitting Factory (photo by austinmccutchen)

Kimya Dawson just visited the NYC-area to play shows at Maxwell's (Saturday after the Sonics) and Knitting Factory (Sunday) AND to play a surprise reunion show with the Moldy Peaches! As the audience that included Regina Spektor, at least one member of the Strokes and Macaulay Culkin watched, Adam Green and the rest of the gang joined Kimya on stage after her set Sunday for at least the eight songs which you can watch below...

As previously mentioned, that includesAesop Rock (who she recently toured with), John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats, Nikolai Fraiture of The Strokes, and others. You can check out a video of Kimya performing album track "All I Could Do" below.
Kimya will play a few Australian dates with Aesop Rock in October before heading out on a US tour in support of her album in November. That tour includes NYC-area shows on November 12 at Maxwell's and November 13 at Knitting Factory. Many of the shows, including the Knitting Factory show, are with the collaborative group Your Heart Breaks, which Kimya has been a part of, but no opener has been announced for the Maxwell's show. Berth Control also play the Knitting Factory date. Tickets are on sale now for Maxwell's and Knitting Factory.

Wednesday
Twin Shadow @ Fader Fort

A crowded backyard tent filled with cigarette smoke, free open-faced tacos (pork, chicken, brisket or veggie), a man carting a dolly of Lone Star cases through the crowd, and a pair of middle-aged guys picking a fight with each other on a Wednesday afternoon. "Doesn't he know I'm a ticking time bomb?" the offended guy says, a bit like he's not joking. JEFF the Brotherhood is playing too, which is more or less the occasion for all of this, my first show of SXSW 2011. The JEFF brothers aren't really the focus though, since they'll be playing a dozen other times this week, and most of the people are concentrating on the tacos, their conversations or their inability to get away from the door of the totally (did I say?) packed room.
In spite of that, the band is tearing through songs from Heavy Days and their new LP We Are the Champions, and between songs tossing out free vinyl singles into the crowd: "Those are going to slice someone's neck open," says Jake before slinging a few more across the room. They go into "Bummer," a ballady, Dino Jr.-style headbanger, that's one of the standout new tunes.
Trash Talk @ BV/Feed the Beat Day Party (photo by Samantha Marble)

Ty Segall's entertaining and totally worthwhile band is up next, but the BrookylnVegan day show at Emo's is also currently happening, the highlight of which has to be the simulatneous staging of Cali punks Trash Talk (who went on before Kylesa) and Mister Heavenly (who went on before Surfer Blood). Mister Heavenly are a supergroup of-sorts you've heard about. On the inside, Trash Talk frontman Lee Spielman towers over everyone with the body of a scarecrow and a scary-as-hell perma-scowl; he smashes his forehead with the microphone a few times to draw blood. "Stick around for Surfer Blood," he says, before crawling into the crowd and standing on what I can only hope were someone's shoulders. People start edging toward the door. On the outside stage, Mr. Heavenly performs an appropriately lovely set, its two frontmen trading verses in their own styles.
After that, the Fader Fort brought Twin Shadow on stage, the bedroom-pop project of George Lewis Jr. that's become a wildly good live band. For an outdoor venue, the system sounded impressively balanced and clear - which would turn out to be a rarity at the festival. That was 'specially good for Yelawolf, whose songs sounded vital in a way that your iPod just can't do. With no crew to speak of, his solo athletics put in an early bid for best-of.
Yelawolf @ Fader Fort

Later that night at Stubb's, Yuck and James Blake played what would be the first of several for both. Both did well on the big stage, a portent of things to come, vibing out in their respective styles: fuzz rock and chilled-out pop. Check out both of their sets for yourself at NPR- Blake and Yuck.

"Clyde and I will be playing this early show [at Knitting Factory] in Brooklyn [on Friday, October 8th] before Wanda Jackson and Lustre Kings play a 9:30pm show. You do have to buy separate tickets for our show and for Wanda Jackson, but what a night! Woowee! Doors are at 6:30 and we start at 7 and it is all ages but this is not specifically a kids' show. Be forewarned- F*Bombs will drop- if you don't like your kids to hear "profanities" (or songs about jerking off and creamed jeans and hot queer rooftop escapades) leave your kids at home.Kimya Dawson has no other upcoming dates, and did not recently participate in the final Dufus show at Cake Shop though four other members of the Moldy Peaches did."But Kimya! That is the night of our 20 year class reunion! How could you be in New York and make plans the same night?!" You ask.
OH SHIT THE REUNION?! Oops. Wait, I wasn't even planning on going. I have no desire to hang out at a football game or a bar all night but maybe we could meet up Saturday morning at a playground and say hi. I'd love to meet your kids- just maybe not at my show (or a football game or a bar).
Okay fuckers, seriously, this show is going to be GREAT!!!! You love Your Heart Breaks, even if you don't know it yet.
And I might even be making sharpie shirts for the first time since I developed an aversion to sharpie smell when I was pregnant.
Anything else you need to know? Start flexing your triceps. I want some solid hugging. Solid. Solid as The Rock." [Kimya Dawson]
Jeffrey Lewis on the other hand (who she plays in the Bundles with) has a bunch of shows coming up (all with The Vaselines)

Kimya Dawson played a random warehouse in Brooklyn last night (8/17), aka the Pyramids. If you missed it, you're in luck because she has added a 2nd NYC show since the initial annoucement, and it goes like this:
8/18 Hallie's 18th Birthday Celebration Concert at 3LD (Three LeggedThat is, as it states, 8/18 (aka tonight). If you can't be there, you can stream it, below...

The whole thing is open to the public or you can come at 10. It will be a beautiful and moving party. Event details here

Kimya Dawson will be in Brooklyn August 17th for an intimate show at The Pyramids (32D South 1st St), a space also known as South 1st Studios and formerly known as Glasshouse. Also on the bill are No One and the Somebodies, TURBOSLEAZE, Pablo Das and Only Son. The show is at 7pm, all ages, no advance tickets ($10), and the space fits about 200. It's part of a short tour for Kimya that includes a house show in Baltimore and a gig in Philly.
Also at the Pyramids is a show a few days earlier on August 12th with Eternal Summers, Reading Rainbow (who have shows with Dum Dum Girls and Crocodiles coming up), Rescue Bird, German Measles and Family Trees (who have a 7" out for the song above, with a video below). That show is $8.

The Bundles

Like Dan Deacon, a band called the Bundles are playing the Cake Shop anniversary celebrations this month. Their show is on Wednesday, May 12th.
The Bundles are fronted by the anti-folk dream-team of Jeffrey Lewis and Kimya Dawson, and include drummer Anders Griffen, Jack Lewis (Jeff's brother and band-mate) and K Recs' Karl Blau. Their debut self-titled record came out on K Records in April.
Also on the Cake Shop bill are the controversially-named Sidewalk Cafe staples Ching Chong Song and Only Son (ex-Moldy Peaches guitarist Jack Dishel), as well as a mysterious "Secret Guest". Who could that be? Well, two members of the Moldy Peaches are listed on the bill already, Kimya headlining would sort of be a bigger deal than her new band, Moldy Peach Adam Green is sort of big (he just did two nights at Bowery), so my guesses are:
1) Moldy Peaches (seems unlikely though right?)My last guess, Regina Spektor, also got her start at places like Sidewalk Cafe and has toured with Only Son more than once. I have no idea really. What do you think?... UPDATE:
2) Kimya Dawson (but why be secret when you're already on the bill?)
3) Adam Green (bigger, but does he need to be a secret?)
4) Beck (just kidding)
5) Regina Spektor
hey guys, andy cakeshop here...just so theres no confusion, its not adam green.. i was throwing the idea around with his management, but it was really just an idea. the bills really strong on its own, and i should really take off the 'secret guest' thing, its been a weird week and sorry it got to this level. jeff and kimya need to play at 8 to make it to a prior commitment...anyway we're working on something cool for the 11pm, but as of yet, truthfully, its not booked! sorry for the mixup &"SECRET GUEST!" has now in fact been replaced with "TBA". It was fun while it lasted.
thanks everyone.
love, andy
Before then, Jeff Lewis plays Happy Ending Music Series at Joe's Pub tonight (5/5). Tickets are available.

So you're up for a Grammy with the "Juno" soundtrack.Juno won the Grammy for "Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media"Kimya Dawson: (Heaves a sigh) Yeah. (Laughs)
Was it weird for you to be on the No. 1 album last year?
Uh, it was funny. But it was pretty silly. I mean, the songs were in a movie that was really, really popular; and it was just a really good movie. So I think that the way the movie made people feel really made my music more relatable. ... It wasn't like (boatloads) of people were suddenly getting what I do.
Have you gotten calls to appear on other soundtracks?
I've got a few songs on a film that's coming out (that) just premiered at Sundance called "Unmade Beds." And it's (made by) an Argentine director named Alexis Dos Santos. He made a film called "Glue" a few years ago that had a few of my songs in it. ... He had invited me to perform at the premiere last week. But I had started a community choir in Olympia; and our first performance was that night, so I couldn't miss that.

Okkervil River releases The Stand Ins this week, yet another lyrical masterpiece from Will Sheff and crew.
I pre-ordered copies of Kimya Dawson's long-awaited children's album, Alphabutt for all my young nieces, nephews and children of friends and encourage you to do the same. It's a work of genius for the kids from one of my favorite singer-songwriters who definitely understands what children want.
Metallica releases its latest album, Death Magnetic, in a variety of formats this week, including 2-disc and 5-disc vinyl sets.
Two notable releases this week are the Lovely Sparrows' Bury the Cynics and Horse Feathers' House With No Home, incredible albums that will very possibly end up on my year-end list of favorites.
Beyond these discs there is a multitude of good music available tomorrow. From what I have already heard, I can recommend Angela Desveaux's The Mighty Ship, Calexico's Carried to Dust, Damien Jurado's Caught in the Trees, Don Chambers' Zebulon, Fujiya and Miyagi's Lightbulbs, Jesu's Why Are We Not Perfect EP, Mogwai's Batcat EP, Parenthetical Girls' Entanglements, and Portastatic's Some Small History (a b-side and rarities compilation).
Three Daniel Johnston discs are reissued this week: 1990, Artistic Vice, and Rejected Unknown.
What new music releases can you recommend this week?

For his final project as an undergrad at England's Huddersfield University, Miller came up with Colour It (Red), a book/compilation combo inspired by his favorite indie rock jams and the (Red) organization, which raises money for the AIDS/HIV-battling Global Fund.Feist, who played Hammerstein Ballroom last time she was here, plays the Prospect Park Banshell in Brooklyn this Wednesday July 9th. The show is sold out, but you can always listen for free from outside the fence. Feist is also back in NYC on July 25th to appear on Good Morning America.Taking a cue from such indie megahits as LCD Soundsystem's "All My Friends", Panda Bear's "Comfy in Nautica", and Joanna Newsom's "Peach, Plum, Pear", Miller crafted a coloring/activity book sure to tickle pink-- er, make that red-- even the most hardened, poker-faced, arms-crossing indie music fiend.
Can you "help James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem find all his friends" by completing a maze? Care to "make Beirut's carousel pretty by colouring it"? Are you man or woman enough to "find the grizzly bear that does not fit"?? [Pitchfork]

Has the Juno buzz worn off a little? It should be strong now that there's all this pregnancy talk that has "the Most Successful Indie Film in Six Years" back in the news. Maybe parents are afraid to let their kids near Kimya....
With a lot of attention on teen pregnancy these days, parents can use the news to talk about sex and pregnancy with their children. Here are some tips from experts.Juno is the new Judas Priest. Okay, I made the last tip up (not the one before it though), but young girls across the world are apparently watching Juno and getting Knocked Up like crazy... or are they?- Have age-appropriate discussions about sex. Answer their questions openly and honestly.
- Talk about teen pregnancy. Ask your kids what they thinks about "Juno" and Jamie Lynn Spears' pregnancy, says Bill Albert, spokesman for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy....
- Throw away your kids' Moldy Peaches albums...
[Associated Press]
Juno" actor Jason Bateman has defended the Oscar-winning movie against claims it has encouraged teenage girls to get pregnant.Adam Green and Ozzy Osbourne could not be reached for comment...He tells "Access Hollywood," "I don't know the specifics, but I can speak about what sort of responsibility entertainment should hold for social behavior.
"Unfortunately, we've had these instances where guys kill people because of what they hear in rock 'n roll lyrics or some garbage like that. Look, if you're going to blame a movie or song for your actions, whether they be good or bad, I think you're looking at the wrong things to influence your life.
"What we're doing is providing entertainment in different flavors for your consumption. I think people should look to other areas of their life for lessons and guidance, mainly parents, or teachers, or friends, or whomever. That should probably be where you should point your eyes and ears." [SFGate]

That Kimya post reminded me....
The Moldy Peaches are one of the unlikeliest success stories in indie rock: they went from being a minor novelty act to being essentially broken up to rocking Barbara Walters on The View with a song from the soundtrack to Juno. They've allowed that song, "Anyone Else But You," to be re-written for an ad for the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas. The new version features lyrics like "Let's go ride a couple of dolphins/Or maybe play tennis/Or do some golfing." It's a strange marriage, as the Peaches never seemed like the types to shill at this level, while Atlantis associates themselves with a band who once had a minor hit with a song called "Who's Got the Crack." Adam Green @ Town Hall, NYC - May 10, 2008

Adam Green, the beloved New York singer-songwriter with the deep baritone voice and quirky sense of humor, played his largest headlining show to date last Saturday at Town Hall. When he said on The View that he was playing there, I thought it was the perfect setting for him and it was about time. He may come off as this jokey musician with nonsensical lyrics to Joe Public, but from following his solo career, I knew he takes his music seriously. So, Town Hall suits him fine. [Music Snobbery]Tim Fite and Laura Marling opened the show on Saturday.
Adam Green's next NYC show will be something much smaller. This info is posted on Rehab (formerly Club Midway)'s website....
positively avenue bThe Juno soundtrack is probably the main reason Adam can play a venue as large as Town Hall now (and why he was on The View) (and why Kimya Dawson is suddenly headlining Webster Hall).
