Bleached @ Knitting Factory

We missed the first opener Habibi, but Bleeding Rainbow (formerly Reading Rainbow), Jack White's friends The Black Belles, and their tour-mates Bleached (ex Mika Miko) at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on Saturday night (2/11). Here are some pictures.
Now in Chicago, The Black Belles will peform at an Anti-Valentine's event before their show with Bleached at Empty Bottle. The two bands then part ways and Bleached hits the road with Veronica Falls who also played NYC over the weekend.

Moldy Peaches reunion @ Knitting Factory (photo by austinmccutchen)

Kimya Dawson just visited the NYC-area to play shows at Maxwell's (Saturday after the Sonics) and Knitting Factory (Sunday) AND to play a surprise reunion show with the Moldy Peaches! As the audience that included Regina Spektor, at least one member of the Strokes and Macaulay Culkin watched, Adam Green and the rest of the gang joined Kimya on stage after her set Sunday for at least the eight songs which you can watch below...

Yellow Ostrich @ Knitting Factory

As far as BrooklynVegan shows were concerned, we started out this year's CMJ in a lowkey manner with a free Thursday day show at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. We Were Promised Jetpacks, announced that same day, headlined the show that began with a set by Yellow Ostrich at 12:30pm.
Though they didn't play acoustic like they did the night before at the FatCat CMJ showcase at Mercury Lounge, WWPJ mixed it up by performing as a three-piece since one of their members wasn't in town yet. Expect a four-piece at Webster Hall and other dates of their tour. Austin's Hundred Visions played their 2pm set despite their 15 passenger van being stolen from its parking spot in Williamsburg the night before. Luckily most of their gear was not in it at the time.
The whole day looked like this:
12:30 Yellow Ostrich (Barsuk)Those in attendance also enjoyed free beverages courtesy of HobNob Wine and PBR, and free snacks courtesy of popchips and Raw Revolution.
1:15 Still Corners (Sub Pop)
2:00 Hundred Visions (unsigned)
2:45 Forest Fire (FatCat)
3:15 BOBBY (Partisan)
4:00 Main Attrakionz (Mishka)
5:00 We Were Promised Jetpacks (FatCat)
Thanks everyone who stopped by. Here are some pictures. More below...

The fifth annual Royal Flush Festival happens at Knitting Factory Brooklyn from October 13 - 17. Hosted by arts/comics/music mag Royal Flush, details are still a little sketchy on the fest's website, but bands include Art Vs Science, Kid Savant and Glitter Freeze. (Not sure about films this year.) Most excitingly, for this writer at least, is that the Royal Flush folks have coerced '90s-era indie rockers Lotion out of retirement for their first show in 12 years on Monday, October 17.
New York City in the 1990s was not the hotbed of local music it is today and apart from Soul Coughing and D Generation and Luna there wasn't a whole lot going on here. What there was of a scene, it mostly happened at Luna Lounge which served as a music industry hangout and place to catch local bands for free. Among them, Lotion were tipped Most Likely to Succeed. They were one of the first "Cute Band Alerts" in Sassy, their debut Full Isaac was named Album of the Year by the Village Voice (though not in the Pazz & Jop poll), appeared on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and, perhaps most famously, got reclusive author Thomas Pynchon to write the liner notes for their 1996 album Nobody's Cool.
Lotion toured with Pavement, Mercury Rev and others and got compared to R.E.M. a lot, which I never quite understood, but they did make some amazingly crafty, complex pop over the course of three albums, all of which are worth seeking out. (They're all out of print but used copies are affordably-priced.) Their live shows were legendary, especially at Luna Lounge which could be loose and boozy and filled with covers. After 1998's The Telephone Album (their best if you ask me), interest fizzled and the band ceased operations a year later.
Singer Tony Zajkowski and drummer Rob Youngberg formed Honeycomb in the early '00s. Honeycomb were equally pop-friendly but added a multimedia element to their shows that made them unique. Honeycomb won some big Best Unsigned band contest around that time, and snuck out an album in 2008 but the project ended shortly after. Zajkowski and Youngberg have formed a new band, Spellbender, that are still gearing up for their live debut.
I don't think Lotion's last show back in '99 was intended that way, so here's your chance to see them. A few choice Lotion cuts (via YouTube) are below.

Vivian Girls / Widowspeak @ Knitting Factory

"Here's a shocker: Widowspeak live sound pretty much exactly like their record. Meaning: awesome. And if you didn't already know they'd covered Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" as a B-side, their dropping of that track in mid-set was a deal-sealer. Cough

Slow Southern Steel blew into town on a typhoon-like Saturday night (8/13), bringing with it late night performances from Cough (with special guest/film director CT on vocals!), Apostle of Solitude, and Earthling. Though an unfortunate accident prevented the Jaegermeister from appearing as advertised, the show was an excellent night that both celebrated southern music and celebrated WITH it.
The main attraction was Slow Southern Steel, the oft-delayed documentary on the southern-fried metal phenomenon that has given birth to bands like Eyehategod, Buzzov*en, Rwake, Dark Castle, Kylesa, Zoroaster and more. Ninety minutes in length, the NYC showing was the first time that the film had been screened outside of director CT's (of Rwake) native Little Rock, Arkansas. While SSS does feature all of the usual suspects and pieces on the influence of bands like Eyehategod, the film focuses more on the people, culture, and the human side of southern rock. The influence of church, growing up with livestock, Katrina, and the hotly debated rebel flag were given as much attention as Buzzov*en. As a result, Slow Southern Steel is a broad but intriguing look into that music scene. With deliberate-pacing and an excellent sense of humor, this is a film for music fans of any genre or anyone interested in understanding the different cultures that exist within our own borders. Here's to hoping this documentary receives a proper release sometime soon.
Following the film, we were blessed by performances by Earthling (a Richmond thrash-meets-black metal crew), Apostle of Solitude (Indianapolis doom) and headliner Cough, who hadn't played NYC since The Charleston late last year. Earthling was a pleasantly-solid band and considering that they only have a demo to their name, they'll move quickly. Apostle of Solitude features Bob Fouts (ex-The Gates of Slumber) on low-end, and the band's traditional doom jams were much-better represented live than on their recent release. See them live if you can. Cough, as usual, delivered a killer performance of slow-crawling doom destruction and closed their set with a cover of "Tired of Being Alive" by Danzig with CT on vocals. It was an excellent end to an equally excellent night.
More pictures from Knitting Factory on Saturday night are below.

The Dwarves

The Dwarves played the misanthropic and high-octane punk shows in NYC onver the weekend, part of a larger 25th anniversary tour for the miscreants. The first was on Friday (7/15) at Knitting Factory with The Stalkers and Lugosi. Dwarves then packed up their snotty attitudes and fun riffs to play The Studio at Webster Hall the next night (7/16) with The Stalkers, The Threads, and Cvlt War. Pictures from Knitting Factory are in this post.
The Dwarves kick off a round of dates with Nashville Pussy in early August that will hit the Southwest before heading to California and the remainder of the West Coast. Dates and more pictures from Knitting Factory (sorry, none of Lugosi) are below...

Talk to any Formula One fan and they will be unequivocal in their admiration of Ayrton Senna. The Asif Kapadia-directed documentary Senna made its North American premiere at Sundance where it won the World Cinema Audience Award. It since won Audience Award for Best International Feature at the LA Film Festival, and screened at BAM here in Brooklyn as part of BAMCinemaFest on June 19 (tickets were $13). PDA releases the movie to theaters on August 12, but you don't have to wait that long to see it next...And this stunning documentary goes a long way to explaining just why that is.
Compiled from hours of archive racing footage and interviews and the Senna family's home videos, this is a comprehensive look at the Brazilian's F1 career and it's not just for fans of motor racing. [TheVoid]
BrooklynVegan is proud to present a free screening of Senna at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on Sunday, July 17 (doors at 4pm, movie at 5pm). That's the flyer above.
If you came to our screening of Exit Through the Gift Shop, another movie released by PDA, you know the deal. The venue gets filled with chairs and a screen comes down on the stage. The projector is in the back of the room and the sound system is great.
The screening is first come, first served, and to encourage you to come early, the first 50 people on line will get a free poster (not to mention a better seat). The bar will be serving drinks, and in keeping with the Brazilian theme, we'll also be giving out free Vita Coco. Free movie, free coconut water. You can't go wrong.
Check out the movie trailer and poster below...

Nobunny @ Kniting Factory

"NOBUNNY IS MY NEW FAVORITE BAND. HOLY SHIT.Respect to Nobunny, if for no other reason than being described as "regal" in "black skivvies". Regardless of any official monarchical status though, Nobunny was definitely the king of Knitting Factory on Friday night (7/1). The garage rock band fronted by a crazy bunny headlined the Brooklyn venue with Shellshag as part of a pair of NYC dates with TV Ghost (a late show at Mercury Lounge played out on the following day). Pictures from KF are in this post.If there were ever a band to embody a musical representation of my soul, it would probably be Nobunny. ...Their show at the Knitting Factory last night ...was hands down the best show I have been to all summer, if not since SXSW (perhaps even before). Nobunny himself had a stellar presence and looked absolutely regal in his leather bolero jacket and black skivvies." -[Midwestern Miscreant]
Nobunny is still on the road, playing Baltimore at Golden West tonight (7/5) and eventually hopping his/their way back to California by the end of the month. TV Ghost, who also played Philly with Nobunny, is finished touring for now. Shellshag play Cinders Art Gallery on July 8th. All Nobunny dates and more pictures below...

"I'm going off-list!" declared guitarist Patrick Pentland a few songs into Sloan's set at Knitting Factory last Thursday (June 30) which was also the last night of their tour. It would not be the only time the Canadian band would deviate from their printed setlist that evening which was one of the more fun Sloan shows I've seen in a while.
Apart from songs from their great new album The Double Cross, the impromtu nature of the show knocked out almost everything from the band's 2001-on catalog save Jay Ferguson's "Who Taught You to Live Like That" from 2006's Never Hear the End of It. Which was probably all right with a lot of fans. (I can't think of the last time NYC got "Anyone Who's Anyone" from Once Chord to Another.) The band was in great spirits as was the crowd who kept the constant "Sloa-oan! Sloa-oan!" chants going in between songs.
Highlights for me were the new album's stomping "Beverly Terrace" and "Unkind," oldies "Coax Me" (another off-list number), "C'mon C'mon," a quite spirited "Underwelmed" and Andrew Scott's "On the Horizon" which gave bassist Chris Murphy a chance to go apeshit (Keith Moon-style) on the drums. Sloan's other drummer is better than most band's main drummer. The talent in this band is kind of insane.
I missed openers and fellow Canadians Hot Kit but we have pictures from their set. After the show, Jay Ferguson (who I interviewed last week) told me Sloan will be back this fall for three shows (one being Maxwell's they hope) if all works out. UPDATE: It all worked out (all three shows announced).
More pictures, a couple of videos & their setlist (written and actual) below....

Surfer Blood

Though we didn't get there in time to get pictures, Bill said Eternal Summers were a highlight of the Kanine Records Northside Festival showcase at Knitting Factory Friday night. The bill also included a rockin set by Grooms, Pepper Rabbit (who Bill liked despite thinking he wouldn't), X-Ray Eyeballs (who also played the secret show at Death By Audio with Thee Oh Sees later in the night), and headliner Surfer Blood who played a few new songs during their late set to a packed house. If you were there, how long did you wait to get in? Surfer Blood also opened for Guided By Voices on Saturday.

The Antlers are one of the many artists now over in Brighton to play a showcase at the Great Escape. It's like SXSW, but smaller, but in England by the sea. The Antlers play their showcase on Saturday, which means if you're there you can see that without having to miss the BrooklynVegan/M For Montreal showcase happening tonight (5/13) (well, happening like now). The UK festival kicked off yesterday (5/12), and we have Tim Griffin over there covering. His pictures of PS I Love You, Warpaint, Twin Shadow, DJ Shadow, The Joy Formidable, Emika and more, are currently posted over at the BrooklynVegan Facebook page.
Exactly one week ago today, or technically one week ago tomorrow, The Antlers played a FREE, BrooklynVegan-presented show at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn at 1am. Somehow it worked out perfect - I think exactly the right amount of people showed up. I don't think anyone got turned away, and we were at capacity. And the show was extra special because the Antlers played their entire new, Best New Music-winning (take that Tyler!) record Burst Apart from start to finish (like they did at SXSW/on NPR), in addition to an epic two-song encore. Their sound is also fuller than ever due to the addition of a fourth member, which, like the show in general, was a great thing. Listen to the whole show courtesy of NYC Taper who taped it and posted the MP3s (and FLAC).
If you miss them, don't worry. The Antlers will return to the states soon to kick off their tour with Little Scream in DC on May 17th. Though if you waited to get tickets to either of the two NYC shows, you are now out of luck.

BOBBY @ Knitting Factory

"If you were at Knitting Factory last night, you got a trio of entertainment forms. You have the experimental musical stylings of BOBBY, you have projected artistic images and the celebration of Cinco de Mayo. As we know, Cinco de Mayo is when St. Mayo drove five big snakes out of Tijuana using a mariachi band while wearing a big sombrero.Molly Sarle was in fact the female voice on stage with her own band BOBBY at Knitting Factory last night (5/5), a change from BOBBY's last NYC show, and every other show they've played since. Mountain Man member Amelia Meath, who filled in for Molly at the previous shows, instead watched this one from the front row.The Massachusetts-based collective are a fairly new band as founded by Tom Greenberg and featuring Molly Sarle of the popular vocal group Mountain Man. When I use the term experimental, that's a code word for "I have no idea what genre of music this lies under". Then I have to admit that music shouldn't need to be defined by genres. With the sparse guitars and a few electronic samplers, keyboards and processors, BOBBY does a fine of job making all that weirdness come together. It does help that Sarle's whoops and moans gives their set an other worldly quality." [Music Snobbery]
BOBBY played after a chill set by Real Estate side project Alex Bleeker & the Freaks (who covered a Mountain Man song). Detroit band Prussia opened the show and impressed with high energy and strong vocals. To quote Flagpole, "Imagine Flowers-era Rolling Stones colliding with Animal Collective while hanging out at Vampire Weekend's house and you're on the right track."
Right before the show we hosted a Hornitos Tequila-sponsored Cinco de Mayo party in the Knitting Factory front bar. 21+ ticketholders could choose between a free "Vegan Margarita" (named after the website more than the ingredients) and the "What about Bobb(by)" (or they could have both) (or as many as they could drink/hold in a 2 hour period). Which one did you like better? I thought I liked the "Vegan" better at first, but ended up partial to the "Bobby."
BOBBY return to NYC as part of a tour with Thao & Mirah. Prussia also played a show one night earlier at Mercury Lounge with Dominique Young Unique. Alex Bleeker's band Real Estate has a few shows coming up later this month.
More pictures from the Knitting Factory show, below...

... after the Holly Golightly show at the same venue (Friday night).
If you can't make it, tickets are still on sale for The Antlers' May 19th show at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Their May 20th show at Bowery Ballroom is sold out. Both shows are part of their May tour with Little Scream in support of their new album 'Burst Apart', which is currently streaming over at NPR, and which has cover art that looks a lot like the flyer above (Burst Apart is out May 10th on Frenchkiss. above flyer designed by Tonally Dude).
Meanwhile... come drink and then see BOBBY, Alex Bleeker & Prussia at Knitting Factory tonight (5/5).

The eclectic sounds of Grails played Knitting Factory on a wet Easter night (last night, 4/24) with tour-mate James Blackshaw. Unfortunately, I missed all of Moonrises's set and at least half of James Blackshaw's, though his twelve-string guitar's resonant (in tone and emotion) and gorgeous compositions sounded amazing.
Grails played material from across their output to a mesmerized crowd. New tracks like "I Almost Grew My Hair" mixed with old songs like encore track "Reincarnation Blues." The six-piece rotated instruments, with Emil Amos (who is also in Om) playing both drums and guitar, while the other band members weilded lap steel, keys, sampler, melodica, shaker, and more. Grails is supporting their current jaw-dropping effort Deep Politics (out now on Temporary Residence).

Baths @ Knitting Factory

Star Slinger may have bowed out, but Saturday night's alliterative line-up still proved to be a delightful exercise in spacey electro-pop. The show began with Mikey Sanders' project, Blackbird Blackbird. Though he typically performs solo, Sanders had help from his friend Frank. Much like Baths, Blackbird Blackbird is heavily comprised of bass-heavy laptop samples that are skillfully manipulated by a series of knobs and faders and set to nice, clear vocals.
Sanders mentioned multiple times how "fucking stoked" he was to be playing over the course of his 20-minute set, and the audience responded to this enthusiasm by beginning to loosen up. Though the night was still young, it was clear that a dance party was brewing.
But before things got too frenzied, the dancers got a bit of a respite thanks to Braids' pleasantly dreamy set. After a long, meandering instrumental intro as the band and technicians ironed out some last-minute kinks, the lights suddenly changed and Braids exploded into the moody crowd pleaser "Lemonade."
Lead singer and guitarist Raphaelle Standell-Preston had a big smile on her face throughout the evening, despite her apparent illness. (She had thought ahead to bring a a steaming thermos and a Kleenex box on stage with her.) But even more notable than her upbeat disposition was her ability to hit every note - especially the high ones in "Lammicken." (At times, she looked a bit surprised when she nailed them, too.) When she finally confessed that she had "lost" her voice near the end of their set, she could barely talk. Luckily, the final song in the set called for some shrieking and audience participation.
When it was finally time for Baths, both Will Wiesenfeld and the sold-out crowd were ready to dance. "Ok. You guys want to hear music, I assume," Wiesenfeld began. "Let's do it!" As he began to play his first song, he turned to the sound technician a few seconds in. "Everything louder! Louder, louder, louder!"
It's easy to knock laptop musicians, but unlike some performers, Wiesenfeld is anything but dull. With his hands moving rapidly over dials and knobs, Wiesenfeld was a blur. He danced as much as physically possible, sending the key ring at his belt loop jingling wildly, which added yet another layer to the music.
"Oh my God. I love him already!" yelled a girl behind me during the first song. Everyone was gushing and in good spirits - it's hard not to be with lyrics like "It's a breezy, beautiful day." Meanwhile, Wiesenfeld was soaking up the love with a big grin on his face. "We're all friends here. I know all of you," he cried out at one point.
He was moving so much that he somehow managed to dislodge his glasses - twice. "I don't have any rock star things other than my glasses falling off, so that's peak. That's as bad ass as I get," he joked.
Following his action-packed set (which included a number of new songs), Wiesenfeld returned to uproarious applause for a one-song encore before admitting to the crowd and admitting, I don't have any more. I'm going to disappear."
--
The Saturday night show was over before midnight which is when Todd P took over for a late night party feating a set by John Maus.
Braids play again at Glasslands tonight (12/15), and then Baths and Braids continue their tour together at a sold out Mercury Lounge on Wednesday. More pictures from Knitting Factory below...

Unlike basically every other cultural outlet, the writers of Tiny Mix Tapes voted to give their Album of Year honors to an artist that isn't Kanye West. Instead, they gave it to NYC avant-noise/rock group Zs for their excellent 2010 album New Slaves. (Don't worry: Kanye still made #10.)
Zs will start the new year with a complement to that record, New Slaves II: Essence Implosion!, a collection of remixes that comes out on the Social Registry on Tuesday, January 25th. On the record, the band's tracks are reworked by the likes of Genesis P. Orridge, JG Thirwell, Gabe Andruzzi of The Rapture and others, and the whole thing starts off with a new track featuring Charlie Looker, Weasel Walter and WFMU's Marty McSorely. Two of those remixes are posted above, along with an exclusive mix not on the release done by Justin Pearson of The Locust (That's the Leg Lifters "Professional" Remix of "Gentleman Amateur"). You can also check out "Acres of Skin" from New Slaves, to give you a taste of the source material.
Zs have an album-release show for the disc Monday/tonight at Knitting Factory with Thee Majesty (Feat. Genesis P-Orridge), Ecstatic Sunshine, Cex and DJ DRUZZ (The Rapture/Throne Of Blood). The group has a special set (with an extra member) planned in honor of the release, so expect something unusual. Tickets are still on sale.
Also coming up, Zs: Black Crown Ceremony will play with Sightings, White Suns and Normal Love at Death By Audio on January 28th.

"King Tuff totally rocked it at the knitting factory tonight.
Glad I didn't miss it!" - BeyondBeyondisBeyond

King Tuff (aka Kyle Thomas who also happens to be in Witch and Feathers and Happy Birthday) headlined (an actual birthday party) at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn last night (1/20) with support from Frankie Rose & The Outs and Nude Beach. That's Tuff above, and more pictures of the show are below.
Frankie Rose & The Outs' next and only upcoming show is with MINKS and Dum Dum Girls at Bowery Ballroom on March 4th. Tickets are still available.
Nude Beach (the NY band) will join Nomos and The Men for a FREE show at Generation Records at 2PM on Sunday (1/23). Nude Beach is replacing Pregnant on the in-store bill, who recently dropped off of the show but is still scheduled to play Cake Shop on Mar 18 with Black Wine & Big Eyes. Bone up for Cake Shop by checking out their self-titled LP, out on vinyl now, but you can preview that LP on digital form above.
Generation Records is also a bit of a homecoming show for Nomos and The Men, as both bands recently came back from a two week tour of the West Coast which saw them share dates with Mammoth Grinder, Hatred Surge, Skin Like Iron, Walls, and many others. Both bands released LPs in 2010; Nomos dropped Notes From The Acheron in September (order it) while The Men are currently on their second pressing of Immaculada after initially releasing it in May (snag one).
Witch, in addition to Tuff, also features J Mascis, who just announced some solo acoustic dates, as did his Dinosaur Jr bandmate Lou Barlow with his project, Sebadoh.
